Today’s Scrip-Bit 7 March 2008 1 Peter 2:9-12,15‏

1 Peter 2: 9-12,15    But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into marvellous light. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evil doers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of the foolish man.

Listen up Friends! Peter’s writing to strangers, scattered all over the then known world, but all joined together in the same worthy cause; believers in Jesus Christ. I like how he terms them, ‘a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.’ Yes Friends, that’s us too. Although we may be strangers, living in different parts of a much larger world, we are still all joined as one body in Christ; ‘now the people of God…now having obtained mercy.’ So, as the Rock on which Christ built His Church says, we should sing out the praises of the one, Jesus, who brought us out of darkness into the marvellous light, by dying on the cross to redeem our sins. He also admonishes us to stay away from fleshly lusts that corrupt the soul. Refrain from things that will drive us back into the arms of the enemy. He further advises us to keep our conversation and behaviour honest and above board, so that the unbelievers, amongst whom we dwell, and who think we’re evil, will see our continued good works, and eventually change their minds, believe and glorify God. Friends, that’s our purpose, our mission; to win over unbelievers. So though we are a diverse lot, in different locations, in various stages of Christian growth, we are all ONE in the Lord, joined by a sameness of mind, principles and beliefs, working together for the glory of God. But we can only do that by upholding the high principles of our leader, Jesus. Bruh Peter put it so nicely: ‘For so is the will of God, that with well doing, ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.’ Please my Friends, let’s not be weary in well doing, so that others may see the marvellous light Jesus showed us. Much LOVE!…when we lead the way…others will follow…
