Today’s Scrip-Bit 10 November 2008 Philippians 3:13‏

Philippians 3:13    Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

Oh Friends, what an important, life changing, message that is! Not only in things pertaining to Christianity in particular, but also to life in general. We ought not to let the mistakes of our past haunt us, but instead, learn from them and move on. Too many of us live with the guilt, remorse, regret, bitterness, etc. from our earlier lives which severely disables us, prevents us from moving forward and improving ourselves and the lives of those around us. We all have goals we want to accomplish, but any negative baggage we’re carrying from the past only hinders and curtails us from accomplishing them. Bruh Paul’s goal was to become a clone of Jesus, as much as was humanly possible. ‘I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.’ (vs.14) Most of us would consider his education, his privileged position in the Jewish society, his zeal in persecuting the early church, and his law abiding nature as important; ‘But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ…and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.’ (vs.7-8) Wow Friends! Bruh Paul surely was a different kind of hombre! You have to admire his zeal and desire for excellence in whatever endeavour he chose. And after he got converted, brother, his sole aim was to seek righteousness, not through the law, ‘but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.’ (vs.9) And to his everlasting credit, he did make the attaining of faith through the righteousness of Christ, his life’s goal, never wavering from it, not in intensity, desire or physical effort, despite all the adversity he suffered. Now we can understand how he considers the things from his past life unimportant, but surely, with the many and varied places he preached the gospel, the churches he founded and mentored, you’d think that he would have attained a sufficient amount of righteousness to satisfy his inner man. But not so, he sought perfection. He wanted to be exactly like Christ; experiencing His power, sharing His suffering, dying and rising again. That’s why he says with some amount of disappointment, ‘Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended.’ He’s walking in newness of life and knows Christ more than most, but not to the extent he considers possible. He believes he can still die more to sin and self. ‘But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those which are before.’ Yes Friends, Bruh Paul was a perfectionist when it came to knowing Christ. Not many of us can be like him in our search and desire to know and be like the Master, but it is a worthy goal to which we can all aspire. It’s also very likely that most of us have not reached anywhere close to our optimum level of spiritual maturity. And this is where Bruh Paul’s principle of letting go of the things in our past, and concentrating on those in our future, comes into play. We can’t achieve spiritual maturity while holding on to our past immaturity. Remember what Jesus said to the fellow who wanted to go home and say goodbye to his family before following Him. ‘No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of heaven.’ (Luke 9:62) Yes people, you can’t look back while ploughing, or you won’t plough straight furrows, which are essential in cultivating large areas. From even the early days, (Gen.19) when Lot and his family escaped the destruction of Sodom, the angels of the Lord warned him not to look back. But as always, somebody doesn’t listen, his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. So Friends, looking back isn’t usually a very wise choice, especially if it’s with regrets, and what if’s, and burdens of guilt. The past is already gone, there’s nothing we can do about it. However, today is here, we can begin something new, only using the past as a lesson, so we don’t make the same mistakes, but always forging ahead, concentrating on tomorrow…and tomorrow… and tomorrow… And with each tomorrow, moving closer to perfection; that righteousness, that faith, that likeness in and of Christ that Bruh Paul so zealously sought, and which we also need to seek. Yes Friends, it’s all a matter of diligently putting our hands to the plough, and not looking back. Much LOVE!…we can do it…if we really try…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 9 November 2008 Ecclesiastes 7:14‏

Ecclesiastes 7:14    In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

And isn’t that the truth my Friends! Like Proverbs, Ecclesiastes recommends the wise approach to life, and Chap.7 deals with Wisdom and Goodness upheld. So although Bruh Paul strongly advises us to ‘Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say rejoice.’ (Phil.4:4) and it’s certainly worthwhile advice, but it’s not always humanly possible when the slings and arrows of this world come against us with mighty force, as they’re wont to do every so often. The Preacher though reminds us, that both prosperity and adversity are tools of God. ‘In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other..’ Yes Friends, He has surely appointed the one as well as the other. Moses warned the Israelites about the blessings of obedience and the curse of disobedience. ‘Because thou servedst not the Lord thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things.’ (Deut.28:47) Oh people, it’s absolute folly not to be joyful in times of prosperity, and give thanks to our heavenly Father for His goodness and mercy, cause it’s only through His loving-kindness that we are able to be prosperous. But on the other hand, when times get rough, when we don’t understand why unfortunate things are happening to us, when there’s no logical explanation and we ask why, but don’t get an answer, then we need to remember that both good and bad days are all part of God’s work, part of His sovereign plan. Those misfortunes might forever remain mysteries to us because He uses them apart from our ability to understand. Our understanding then is not important. Remember His ways and comprehension are much higher than ours. Sometimes He uses adversity on purpose to test our mettle; to test our faithfulness, to see if we can really walk our talk, and, if in spite of the difficulties, we’d keep keeping on, keep on being positive, keep on believing, continue trusting in Him and His Son Jesus. Oh Friends, whatever happens to us is all a part of God’s overall plan to shape us, mould us, into the likeness of Christ, whom we consider our Saviour and our Leader. And if we’re to be like Him, then we cannot forget the trials and tribulations He faced here on earth, though He was sinless. Obviously we’ve got to go through some adversity too. And note how the Lord engineered the most precious things in our world: Dough can only become bread if it’s baked, if it passes through the fire. Diamonds are formed in the earth because of heat and intense pressure over long periods of time. Pearls also go through time and pressure sensitive treatment. The iron and gold we so value must be extracted from their ore also by extreme heat. All the things we admire and cherish don’t occur naturally, they must undergo some sort of intense treatment before we find them useful and beautiful. Friends, it’s the same with us; we can never reach our God-given potential, achieve the dreams and desires He’s put in our hearts without going through the tempering fire of adversity. And we’ve got to do that without too much complaining, because that’s just the way God planned it; ‘to the end that man should find nothing after him.’ So that nothing will happen after him. We won’t discover anything after us, so we might as well grin and bear it now. It’s all for our improvement; to be more like the Master. Much LOVE!…whatever the Lord allows…though it seems unfair…it’s always for our benefit …  P.S. The message is short today, to make up for the lengthy one yesterday. (smile)

Today’s Scrip-Bit 8 November 2008 Psalm 12:1‏

Psalm 12: 1    Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

Oh Friends, our God’s really something else yes! Today, while seeking a Bit, I considered Psalm 12, but decided I’d been doing too many Psalms lately, so I continued my search elsewhere. Fifteen minutes later though, I still hadn’t found anything that inspired me, so I pleaded, ‘Lord, help me here nuh!’ I ask for guidance everyday before I start, but today seemed rather unproductive, and it took a few seconds before the irony struck me. The first two words of Psalm 12 are, ‘Help, Lord.’ I could only laugh at His unconventional method of help. But Friends it proves that our God does help us when we sincerely cry out to Him in times of need. And people, right now our world needs lots of help with the sorry state it’s in; ‘for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.’ That’s a fact of life today Friends. The godly and faithful are disappearing, either through death, oppression, or simply getting weary from the struggles of life and falling for the enemy’s lies. As Isaiah said; ‘The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.’ (Is.57:1) The same thing happened in Micah’s time: ‘The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood, they hunt every man his brother with a net.’ (Mic.7:2) Oh Friends why’s that, why’s the wicked winning the war? Bruh David wrote this Psalm as a plea against the wicked. They appeared to have the upper hand; oppressing the righteous, especially in the area of vain glorious, proud speech. ‘They speak vanity everyone with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.’ (Ps.12:2) Today it’s reached epidemic proportions. Most of what we hear or read now is vain, idle or false chatter. We’re all trying to outdo each other. Most of the stories are inconsistent, or filled with hypocrisy. With all our new fangled toys, we’ve become very sedentary, but because of those same toys we’re talking and expressing ourselves much more than before. But if we’re doing less, but talking more, what can we be talking about eh? Much of it has to be inconsequential. As Bruh David declared: ‘His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.’  (Ps.10:7)  And yuh better believe Friends, that there are more scam and fraud artists than ever before. Even the large organizations that once seemed so trustworthy, you can’t believe them anymore, cause lots of it is only convenient spiel. Good example: I checked my e-mail tonight and found some junk that said I’d won some prize of thousands of pounds in England because I’d entered some contest. Well I hadn’t entered any contest, so I didn’t even check to see what I had to do to collect these thousands of pounds, I just deleted it right away. But our culture has become so lazy and greedy, everybody wants something for nothing. That’s why these scams originate in the first place; both the ‘scammer and scammee’ want to profit for doing nothing. Just like the stock market; it only produces grandiose dreams built on quicksand, nothing of real substance. Then when it crashes, everybody hold their heads and bawl, ‘Woe is me!’ But when the foundation less wealth was growing by leaps and bounds, nobody questioned it. And would you believe that these same crooks on Wall Street whom the govt’s are bailing out are still expecting bonuses this year, and even bigger ones. That’s why they say a sucker is born every minute or something to that effect. I’ve been sucked into a couple of nefarious schemes, so I’m talking from experience. But Friends, the opening of Psalm 12 brought an even more troubling thought to mind. It seems there’s a move afoot in the U. S. to ban all radio and television religious broadcasts. I’d heard about it before, but the last e-mail I got, which I distributed to most of you, seems to indicate that it’s gaining momentum. Oh Friends, this is one time I sincerely hope that it’s just a scam! But if it’s true! What’s the U.S. coming to eh? The founding fathers must be turning over in their collective graves. We’ve already banned prayer from schools and public places. If they take religion off the tube and radio, then the next logical move is to ban religion and churches completely. Yet, every President claims to be a Christian and working with God’s guidance. Hn! So how’d we reach this stage eh? Oh Friends, we cannot allow this to happen. That’s why I keep emphasizing we need to become more vocal and outgoing, pleading our cause even more strongly than the enemy’s pleading his. Note, that’s one thing he doesn’t leave to chance. Like the politicians, he gets out there and pounds the pavement. We have to do the same thing. If we allow this to happen… No! I wont’ even consider that possibility, cause I’m sure it won’t. All God’s people will certainly rise up and shout, ‘NO WAY JOSE!’ But to remove that threat, we have to motivate ourselves and each other to get up and do something about it now people. NOW! We tend to hang around and believe, or expect God to fix everything. But He won’t. Remember, He helps those who help themselves. Much LOVE!…our job as believers…is to spread the Word…far and wide…let’s not be negligent…and disappoint Jesus…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 7 November 2008 Romans 1:16‏

Romans 1:16    For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Ah my Friends, how many of us can boldly go out into the streets, and on to the mountain tops and proclaim that  ‘I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ?’ Not as many as there should be, because a lot of us are really closet Christians. For whatever reason, we become timid and fearful when it’s time to openly demonstrate our faith. But that was never a problem with Bruh Paul, for he truly believed, and transferred that belief to his efforts in expounding God’s Word to others. Maybe it was the dramatic way the Lord confronted him, but he sure got a burr under his saddle after his conversion, though he was zealous when he persecuted the faithful. ‘For with the heart, man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.’ (Rom.10:11-12) Note Friends, you believe with your heart, but it’s your mouth that confesses, that brings it out in the open. Remember Jesus said: ‘Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.’ (Mat.10:32-33) So Friends, it’s not good enough just to believe the gospel, we have to speak it too, speak it with faith and authority; ‘for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.’ Yes people, that’s where all believers get their power; from the gospel, the Word of God. It’s our compendium of rules and directives for righteous living on this sinful earth, and followed steadfastly and faithfully, will eventually lead us to salvation, eternal life with Christ. Oh Friends, how as believers then, can we not be proud, excited and enthusiastic to share the Word, that our lives are built on eh? If we’re ashamed, or only luke warm about it, then we’re living fraudulent, hypocritical lives. We can’t be ashamed or luke warm about such a magnificent undertaking as the Gospel! Remember Friends, that ‘Hope maketh not ashamed; because the LOVE of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given to us.’ (Rom.5:5) So if we have Hope in something, how can we be ashamed of it, or not be very enthusiastic about it, cause that’s what Hope is all about; trust, patience and eager expectation. Even before Bruh Paul, Bruh David had that enthusiasm, that LOVE and energy that the gospel instills in sincere believers. ‘I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest. I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.’  (Ps.40:9-10) Yuh see what I’m talking about Friends; Bruh David didn’t keep his faith hidden in his heart, like some of us seem to do, he shared it, far and wide, to all and sundry. ‘With my lips have I declared all the judgements of thy mouth.’ (Ps.119:13) We need to do likewise Friends; declare God’s righteousness, His LOVE, mercy and faithfulness found in His Word to all, so that they too can enjoy the wonderful benefits, the joy and promise of eternal life. ‘For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God.’ (1 Cor.1:18) Yes people, that’s where our new life, now and in the future, derives from; the cross of Jesus, where He shed His Holy blood to pay for our sins. How then can we not be grateful, excited and enthusiastic over such a magnanimous, unselfish act, that so greatly benefits us eh? And the exciting thing Friends, is that it’s not just for the Jews, but for the whole of mankind. Jesus’ death on the cross opened up a whole new spectrum of salvation to all God’s earthly children, so that anyone who believed might have eternal life. Oh Friends, this is the foundation of our faith! We can’t hide it. We must be proud, full of enthusiasm, and go out and disseminate it amongst the entire world! We’ve got to let them know that there’s something much better and longer lasting than the enemy’s brass offerings; the gospel of gold; the Word of God! That’s our purpose on earth. Much LOVE!…don’t hide your light under a bushel…share the good news of the gospel…with the world…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 6 November 2008 Jeremiah 10:23‏

Jeremiah 10:23    O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Of a truth Friends, man does not direct his way or his steps! It is the Lord’s doing! Solomon said it best: ‘The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord.’ (Prov.16:1) Yes Friends, the plans in a man’s heart might be his, but if he’s a believer in the Lord God Jehovah, then what issues from his mouth will be guided and directed by God, in terms of His will. Jesus, before He ascended, made the disciples aware of the persecution they would suffer in His name, but He also reassured them of His protection. ‘And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto the magistrates, and powers, take no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say. For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.’ (Luke 12:11-12) Oh what a wonderful Being, our Saviour, Jesus Christ! Friends, if we believe and trust Him, we don’t need to worry about what to say if we’re brought before authorities who question our testimony and our faith. We will be instructed by the Holy Spirit, our Help-meet, that dwells in us. Hear Matthew’s version. ‘For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.’ (Mat.10:20) Praise His Holy Name people! Our God’s prepared us for all eventualities. What ever predicament we find ourselves in, we know for a fact, we have a written guarantee that He’ll be there to guide and protect us. And Friends, this is something He promised long before Jesus even came to earth. When the Lord appointed Moses the leader and spokesperson for the Israelites, he hemmed and hawed; ‘O lord, I am not eloquent…but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.’ (Ex.4:10-12) Yes people, at times our God places us in rather precarious situations, but He’s faithfully promised that whatever He brings us to, He will bring us through. But Moses was not convinced of God’s promise, and continued asking for help. The Lord finally lost His patience with him, and agreed to give him the eloquent Aaron, to help him. ‘And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even shall he be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.’ (Ex.4:15-16) Yuh see Friends, even though Moses tried to wiggle out of God’s assignment with the lack of eloquence excuse, the Lord was dead set on him being the leader, and gave him the eloquent Aaron for his mouthpiece, so he had no more excuses. I know that God’s directives always seem more difficult than we can handle, but if we really live by the faith and trust we claim to have in Him, then we know full well that we’ll overcome all obstacles with His help. I’m living proof of that. As I’ve said before, when He first broached this Scrip-Bit idea, hn,hn, I laughed, because I considered my scriptural knowledge inadequate. But the Lord persisted, and I finally gave in, and almost two years later, we’re still going strong. And Friends, I can say with strong conviction, that the Lord’s help and guidance have played a great part in it. I am more scripturally aware now, but I still rely on His guidance. Only tonight, I was considering a different verse as the Bit, but He guided me to this one instead. Yes people, it’s not man who directs his footsteps, but the Lord. And if ‘Man’s goings are of the Lord, how can a man then understand his own way?’ (Prov.20:24) Obviously we can’t Friends. But then, the Lord never promised we’d understand His actions or dictates. He clearly stated that His thoughts and actions are higher than ours. All He asks is, if we declare ourselves believers in Him and His Son, Jesus Christ, then we live by His promises, exercise that trust and faith which marks and identifies us as believers. For He’ll never lead us wrong. He’s faithfully promised that. Just trust Him, Friends, and He’ll prove it a million times over. Much LOVE!…trust and obey…there’s no better way…to be happy in Jesus…than to…trust and obey…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 5 November 2008 Daniel 12:3‏

Daniel 12:3    And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

Ah Friends, it’s finally over: Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States of America! And by an overwhelming majority too! The wise in America at last stood up and said no more going down hill, it’s time to stop the life threatening bleeding and start the journey back to the top. And Friends, don’t be fooled or overwhelmed by all the celebrations, it will be a long, arduous journey back to the top of the heap. But as they showed today, when it really matters, they have the enviable ability to come together, to rise above selfish ethnicity, creed and race. They can change chameleon-like when the interest of their country is in jeopardy. And believe you me, the U.S is in serious trouble; economically, financially, spiritually, politically, socially, morally…all the ‘allys.’ I doubt they’ve sunk this low since the Great Depression. And strange enough, for the first time in it’s two hundred and odd years history, the country has turned to a Great Black Hope to lead it out of the abysmal morass that the White Hope has mired it in. Yes Friends, for the first time, someone of African heritage will lead the mighty U.S.of A! It is important and all that, but I personally dislike the term African American, or African any country. To me it rings of separatism; just another means of continuing the ‘ism and schism thing.’  But even more so in this case because Obama’s maternal family was white. Apparently that doesn’t count for anything, for it’s all about the first Black or African American President of the U.S. But there again, hype has always been America’s number one product, and if it makes them feel good or finally righteous as a nation, then so be it. But don’t think  that two hundred and odd years of racism and bigotry will just disappear because someone of African heritage was elected President. Friends, it will not. Many of the African Americans themselves either consider Obama too black, or not black enough. Depends on your skin colour and mental outlook. And even worse, in some pockets of the country the racists and bigots will be highly incensed; The audacity of a ‘n-word’ running the country! They will possibly upgrade their efforts to cause problems. But this is not the time for anybody, majority or minority, to indulge in any nonsense. As John McCain said in his graceful speech of defeat, the campaigns and elections are over, a new leader has been chosen, and it’s time for all Americans to put aside their prejudices, their differences, and work together for the good of the country. Obama, in his humble victory speech, emphasized the same thing, wrapping it around the phrase, ‘Yes you can!’ And they can, we can, everybody can, but Friends not without the help of the One, True God, Jehovah. Remember when Jesus told His disciples that it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter heaven and they were so amazed, wanting to know then who could be saved? ‘But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’ (Mat.19:26)  Let us not forget that Friends. Let’s hope that the new government of the U.S. realizes this too, and endeavours to rebuild the country on the Christian principles on which it was originally founded. Without the overwhelming presence of God, the country will continue to founder and falter. All the catch phrases like, ‘Yes you can,’ and all the calls for hope and change will be like empty sounding vessels unless the underlying presence of God is there. That’s why they were on the road to destruction in the first place; the increasing absence of God and the rise to prominence of the enemy. Anyway Friends, on this momentous occasion, let’s remember one thing, the desperate need for prayer; especially for Obama and his family, that the Lord will watch over them and keep them from harm. But above all Friends, that our ever loving and merciful God will instil the Wisdom of Solomon, the Strength of Samson and the Patience of Job in Obama himself, for he will certainly need all those attributes in enormous quantities, if he’s to be successful. Let’s also pray for the country and those that help him to govern it; that they will be wise and shine as the brightness of the heavens, and they’ll turn the whole nation to righteousness, and keep on shining as bright and plentiful as the stars for ever. Remember, as the U.S. goes, so do all of us. Much LOVE!…hope…faith…change…all start with…belief in God…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 4 November 2008 Isaiah 48:17‏

Isaiah 48:17    Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, the Holy one of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way thou shouldest go.

Well Friends, the big day is finally here; Presidential Election Day in the U.S of A! Today, more than any other day, the eyes of the entire world are focused on the mightiest nation that’s ever existed. Recently though, their might and power have been severely curtailed, and they’re currently on a speedy downward spiral. It seems that’s the eventual fate of all great nations, organizations and people. They become so large and powerful, that their very size and power works against them, making them unwieldy to handle, plus they all seem to conveniently forget where they came from, and who or what brought them to the pinnacle of power. Ah Friends, the U.S.A was founded by the Puritans, a God fearing group fleeing religious persecution in England, who decided to set the course of their new nation by God’s will. And they were successful. So successful that it eclipsed all others from the beginning of time. But too much size and power really seems to overwhelm us and we end up losing our way. ‘Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.’ The U.S figured they were so big and powerful, they could beat the whole world singlehandedly, and without the Lord’s help too. They simply got too big for their breeches. They forgot that it was the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that had empowered and caused them to ascend to such lofty levels, and began believing their own press. They are now one of the most sinful and ungodly nations the world has ever seen. Sodom and Gomorrah are like prep-school compared to them. But they also boast one of the widest and varied religious communities in the world. What a contradiction! Mao should have lived in the U.S. before he wrote ‘On Contradiction.’ But Friends, ‘time longer than twine.’ Our God is very patient. He gives us lots of rope to either hang ourselves, or pull ourselves up out of the mire. Remember the Israelites who whined and complained while wandering in the desert for eighty unnecessary years, instead of simply doing what God said; go over the Jordan and possess the Promised Land. When they finally did, only two persons who came out of Egypt, Caleb and Joshua, lived to do so. Then, when life got rosy, they forgot the Lord, until he allowed serious problems to befall them. A parallel seems to exist here with the U.S. They were riding high on the coattails of the Lord, but then forsook Him. Like Icarus, in Greek Mythology, who tried to escape from prison on Crete by fashioning wings from feathers and wax and got so delusional when he soared on high, that he flew straight towards the sun, melting his wings and plummeting into the sea. The U.S has finally realized it’s mortality. Anyway, the U.S has two choices today: Elect John McCain, of the Republican Party, and continue down the same path of self-illusion and self destruction that George Bush has led them down for the past eight years. Or elect Barack Obama of the Democratic Party, whose campaign was based on the premise of Hope and Change. Whom shall prevail? Only the Lord knows. But know one thing, the nation is in turmoil, judging from the dirty campaigns. It’s still bigoted and racist, despite the friendly smiles and glad-handing, and whoever wins, won’t have an easy task of restoring it to some semblance of prosperity. Obama seems to be the one best suited to lead them back to the godly path. But the Republicans will not let that happen without a great fight, as the status quo greatly benefits them. If Obama does win though, Friends, please don’t expect things to change right away, or expect handouts. The nation did not become powerful on handouts, but on productive work by its citizens. Remember too, one man, or a small group, cannot bring about positive change unless the majority desires it and is willing to work for it. Think about Moses, and all the other leaders of the Israelites, who tried to get them to follow God, but their hearts were stubbornly bent on the enemy’s easy, frivolous living, not on God’s will. Oh Friends, let’s pray that the U.S. awakens from its godless reverie, realizes its mistakes and returns to following the One, True God, of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who faithfully promised, ‘I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way in which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.’ (Ps.32:8) Otherwise, I shudder to think of the world’s plight; for as the U.S. goes, so does the rest of the world. Much LOVE!…people usually get the govt. they deserve…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 3 November 2008 Psalm 49:15‏

Psalm 49:15    But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

Yes Friends, this is what I intended to write yesterday, before the Lord shamed me into writing a Eulogy for my Cousin Tony.  I’m glad He did, for I would have felt even worse than I do now for not remembering how good the Dove family was to me when I first came to Canada. And if it’s so easy to forget the goodness of fellow mortals, whom we can see and touch, what of the immortal God, whom we can’t eh? Guess that’s partly why Bruh David wrote Psalm 49: To remind people to trust in God, not earthly wealth, and address man’s eternal perplexity; the prosperity of the wicked. ‘Hear this, all ye people, give ear all ye inhabitants of the world: Both low and high, rich and poor, together. My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding…Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about? They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him…’ (vs.1-7) Ah Friends, that’s the awesome truth: No material possessions of man can induce God to do anything. Yet men still cling foolishly to earthly artefacts. ‘For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Their inward thought is; that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.’ (vs.10-11) Oh people, that foolishness is even more prevalent now, than in Bruh David’s time. All around us, others are seeking to amass fame and fortune, to boost their self esteem and sense of importance, and leave their names etched in posterity. But Friends that doesn’t work, especially in this modern age, where the key word is expendable; ‘What have you done for me lately? Nothing. Then bye!’ This generation is the most fickle, with the shortest memory span. ‘Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish. This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings.’ (vs.12-13) Yes people, though it’s foolish and doesn’t work, we still allow the enemy to beguile us into doing it. ‘Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them…’ (vs.14) So true friends, so true! ‘But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.’ An even more important truth people! Believers will not see death, for Jesus has already ransomed our soul by His death and resurrection. And like Him, who rose on that glorious Easter morn, so we too shall rise on that fateful day. ‘I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction.’ (Hos.13:14) And in Acts 2:31-32, Bruh Paul talks about Bruh David. ‘He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, wherefore we all are witnesses.’ Oh people of God, let’s rise above the ungodly drive for riches and the subsequent boasting thereof nuh! But also, ‘Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased. For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.’ (vs.16-17) Yes Friends, if the Lord happens to bless us with earthly wealth, don’t cling to it or be afraid. Enjoy and share it in a godly manner. For ‘Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.’ (vs.20) That’s it Friends; the destiny of the wicked and the righteous: If the Lord honours us and we don’t reciprocate properly, we’re like the ignorant beasts that have no soul. The wicked have no hope beyond this mortal coil. But if we’re righteous, there’s resurrection and eternal life to look forward to. For then, ‘Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.’ (Ps.73:24) So Friends, let’s stop considering earthly wealth as an end in itself and see it in its proper context; a means of furthering God’s work here on earth. Much LOVE!…we brought nothing…and will take nothing…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 2 November 2008 Psalm 49:15‏

Psalm 49:15    But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me,
EULOGY TO GEORGE ANTHONY ANDREW DOVE.
Oh Friends, George Anthony Andrew Dove went home to the Lord today, via the rolling hills of Scarborough, Ontario. A most fitting place, since he was born and raised in the lush, undulating terrain of Scarborough, on God’s little acre of Tobago. Tony, that’s the only name I knew, was a distant, older cousin, whom I hadn’t seen or spoken to in several years, though we both lived in the Greater Toronto Area. And since I don’t know that much about his personal life, I can’t really call this a Eulogy. I’m tired writing them this year anyway. Hn! Friends, you’ll understand the contradictions later. But this much I do know: He was a quiet, laid back, kind, unassuming person, who marched to his own drumbeat. This was verified by the large turnout of friends and family, the loving kindness, respect and fondness which everybody had for him. I knew he had some medical problems, but apparently they got worse and eventually felled him a couple years short of his allotted three score and ten. But Friends, the human brain functions strangely yes; very selective and convenient at times, or perhaps it’s  the hand of God, rebuking me for my ingratitude, cause it’s only at the cemetery I remembered  that on my arrival in cold, blustery Canada, 36 years ago, it was Tony who took me under his wing and taught me some of the finer points of Canadian living; the most important being, the adoption, the embracing, the LOVE of Ice Hockey. Oh Cousin T, how could I ever forget that eh? That wonderful winter of 72, of fire wagon hockey on the small, black and white telly, between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres, featuring that famous, fabulous French Connection Line! Wow! I never like field hockey, but you explained the finer points of the game, and in two twos, I fell in LOVE with the smooth skating, dipsy doodling Gilbert Perrault and I was hooked on the ice version. And to make matters worse T, as I’m writing this, with the programme from your Memorial Service next to me, showing the young Tony  I knew, on the back, and the older version, I didn’t know, on the front, the old brain suddenly dug into the archives and flashed a poignant memory: The first coat I ever wore in Canada, a dark blue, spring like coat, was yours. I vividly remember, on my first full day in Canada, walking along Danforth Ave. to Main Subway Station, in the blizzard of wet snow, an early welcome, in my thin, borrowed coat and thin, leather shoes, going downtown with my mother and wife, to the then big emporium of Sears, to buy winter clothing. So after all of that, how can I not write a Eulogy eh? Ah sorry Cousin T. Don’t know what I was really thinking nuh. Ah have to go back and headline this Bit correctly. Ah doh understand how I could ever forget the kindness you and Pamela showed Norma and I, inviting us into your home, in the then new, sprawling concrete jungle of Crescent Town, and showing us the ropes, making us feel welcome in this strange, cold, foreign land. I know we sort of lost touch when we both moved to suburbia in opposite directions. But how could I ever forget the way you mostly called me ‘Ran’ in that quiet, mellow tone, or the days when I’d check you out at the Dental Technology placed you worked at in the Main/Gerrard area? Ah Cousin T, please forgive the ole fella, like age taking a toll on his mental faculties. (smile) But yuh see people, how the Good Lord stepped in and showed me the error of my ways. Yes Friends, that’s our caring, understanding God! And though it’s always sad when someone we LOVE and cherish moves on to the next threshold, leaving us behind to mourn and grieve, in a sense we should also be joyful and celebrate. Because our loved ones have finally shed the restraining shackles of this mish-mash life, and have been set free, to roam unfettered, the halls and corridors of heaven. They’re gone in body, but their spirits live on in our hearts. And Cousin T, I know you were raised on the rock-like foundation of Christianity that exists in sweet Tobago, so with that faith, and the loving kindness you showed to friends, family and strangers, I’m sure, as Bruh David said, God will redeem your soul from the power of the grave and receive you. As I write this, I’m sure that He’s receiving you in glory, and I know you’re telling Him, in your usual unassuming manner, ‘Oh Lord, I didn’t do anything extraordinary. I was just a regular, down to earth guy.’ But T, those are the ones the Lord considers special. So may your soul rest in peace wirh our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and one day, mind you, not any time soon now, (smile) we’ll meet again in that big rink in the sky,and talk animatedly of the days of Gil Perreault, Rico Martin, The Flower, the Road Runner, the Pocket Rocket, and the best trio of defencemen ever to grace a blue line; Big Bird Robinson, Spinorama Savard, and Guy La Pointe! Till then…Much LOVE Brother…Much LOVE!…he who has touched hearts with LOVE…for him…Jesus waits with open arms…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 1 November 2008 Psalm 46:10-11‏

Psalm 46:10-11    Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Yes Friends we’re continuing with those great statements of Bruh David. Now we must first realize that, ‘The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.’ (Prov.16:4) All He made was for His benefit, not ours. His most important and favourite creation though is the human being; us. We are His pride and joy, well sometimes. He made us to revere, respect and worship Him; to exalt His name and power. That’s our main function; our raison d’être. But in His generosity, He mistakenly gave us the freedom of choice and will, and also allowed the enemy to freely roam the earth, which led to rather disastrous results. But Friends, though the Lord’s very merciful and forgiving, He can only put up with wrong doing for so long. Eventually, ‘The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.’ (Isa.2:11) Isaiah knew full well that the Lord greatly disliked the sin of pride and haughtiness, so he repeated the statement in vs.17 and again in Chap.5:15. Man shall not exalt or uplift other men to excessive levels. And history proves it with the sad demise of many men who had attained demi-god status, and who actually believed their invincibility. No Friends, our God is a jealous God. He clearly states that. There shall be no others but Him. And we believers know that there never was, or ever will be any other God but that of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Others however don’t see it that way, and either declare that there’s no God, or acclaim God’s creations; inanimate objects, the sun the moon, stars, etc, or wild creatures of instinct and no intelligence, as having godly attributes. They do yes, but only in the sense that they were made by God, but they themselves can make nothing. And Friends, that really gets God’s dander up. Even back in olden times, smart people recognized this. When Abijah, king of Judah, went out to battle the evil Jeroboam, king of Israel, he stood up on Mt. Zemaraim and lectured his opponents. ‘Hear me thou Jeroboam and all Israel; Ought ye not to know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and his sons by a covenant of salt?…And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hands of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods…But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken Him… And behold; God himself is with us, our captain, and his priests with the sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the Lord God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.’ (2 Chron.13:5-12) Oh Friends, what a stirring appeal for common sense. But it did not prevail. ‘And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand. And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.’ (2 Chron.13:16-17) What a senseless waste. And to think that they all came from the same stock; the seed of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But sadly Friends, the same thing is happening today; brother is senselessly fighting brother, over immaterial, material things. One trumpets the worldly might of the enemy, while the other exalts the spiritual might of God. And whom do you think will prevail? ‘Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time; and the children of Judah prevailed because they relied upon the Lord God of their fathers.’ (2 Chron.13:18) Oh Friends, in any war, those that rely on the Most High God will be victorious, for He WILL be exalted in all the earth. It’s His declared intention. And always remember Friends, ‘The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.’ So let’s seek Him with enthusiasm and joy; live our lives for Him, in constant obedience to His will. Much LOVE!…our God’s a mighty fortress…a mighty fortress is our God…
