Today’s Scrip-Bit 30 December 2008 Psalm 3:3‏

Psalm 3:3    But thou O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory and the lifter up of mine head.

Oh, how true that is my Friends, for all those who put their sincere trust in Him! All believers should subscribe to that dictum. Psalm 3 is a prayer of Bruh David, showing his confidence in God, when he ran from his son Absalom, who sought to kill him and take over his throne. I doubt anything worse can happen to a parent; the fruit of your loins, actively seeking to shed your blood and take your belongings. How sad! And it caused Bruh David to moan in sorrow: ‘Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.’ (vs.1-2) Oh Friends, we all have people, both fickle friends and friendly foes, who do us wrong or try to hurt us, and it’s always more disturbing and hurtful when that person is close to us, someone we’ve long trusted, but who, without warning, finally shows their true, traitor’s colours. After years of deceit and treachery, feigning allegiance to his father, Absalom decided he was strong enough to overthrow him. ‘And the conspiracy was strong; for the people were increased continually with Absalom.’ (2 Sam.15:12) But Friends, as it is today with our enemies, so did Absalom not reckon, with the mightiest power in the universe; the Lord God Jehovah is His name. Absalom should have known better. He must have heard about or seen Bruh David’s numerous troubles and even more numerous triumphs, and known about his unshakeable faith and trust in the Lord of his fathers. And though others figured that the Lord would not help him this time against Absalom, Bruh David’s faith was as strong as ever. He knew with absolute surety the source of his strength, and as he did throughout his entire life, turned to it in faith. ‘But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.’ How many times has he referred to the Lord as his shield eh? We’ll just quote two. ‘For thou Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.’  (Ps.5:12) ‘The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my songs will I praise him.’ (Ps.28:7) The same goes for ‘my glory and the lifter up of mine head.’ He’s always ascribed his success and his inspiration to God. ‘And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy: I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.’ (Ps.27:6) Then he continues in Psalm 3: ‘I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill.’ (vs.4) Please note Friends, Bruh David’s faith is active, not passive, like many of us. He cries out loud; he rejoices; he sings praises and gives heartfelt thanks to the Lord. That’s what we need to do; vocalize it; show it in our everyday behaviour, don’t hide it under a bushel. Jesus said; ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’  (Mat.5:16) If Bruh David had hidden his strong faith, had kept quiet about it, we would only have a few Psalms and songs of praise, worship, trust and encouragement to turn to, to guide and help us today. Oh Friends, as believers today in this cruel world, we need a strong, vocal, active faith. The enemy is strong, vocal and active; that’s why he’s winning as many souls as he is. We need to possess the trust and faith than can say with great assurance, even when our troubles are many and our enemies strong; ‘I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people that have set themselves against me roundabout.’ (vs.5-6) Yes people, that’s how strong our faith needs to be in these critical times. Bruh David’s strong faith helped him, and if we develop a strong trust, it will help us too. For ‘Salvation belongeth unto the Lord; thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.’ (vs.8) And that’s the gospel truth Friends; the Lord blesses those who trust in Him. Much LOVE!…trust in the Lord…great will be your rewards…P.S. Friends, this was one of the Lord’s mysterious moves. Just before I sat down to write the Bit, something happened that cast a black cloud over me, and I just could not gather the inspiration to write on the intended topic. Obviously I turned to the Lord for solace and answers. And Friends, AS ALWAYS, He came through, eventually guiding me to Bruh David’s words. Guess He felt my faith needed strengthening too. So yuh see, ah not talking from hearsay only, but experience too. (smile) And when I came to transfer it to the computer, I found two messages of faith and encouragement waiting to be read. And all God’s people said; ‘Thank you Lord! We praise your Holy Name!’ Much LOVE!
