Habakkuk 2:9 Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil.
And isn’t that the dire truth my Friends! When we try to use evil gain to uplift ourselves, it usually backfires on us. Habakkuk warned his people of Judah about trying to rise in social status and wealth through evil dealings, coveting and acquiring stuff that hopefully would save them from disaster. But Jeremiah scorned that strategy long before, when he solemnly declared; ‘Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord.’ (Jer.49:16) And yuh know how we stay mih people, how the society have we; as soon as we get a li’l money, by whatever means, we quick to go and build up on the hill, as high up as possible, for the higher you are on the hill, the more exalted yuh status. But remember this one thing, regardless of where our evil acquisitions take us, even to the top of the highest hill, even there the Lord’s punishment will find us. ‘For, lo, I will make thee small amongst the heathen, and despised among men.’ (Jer.49:15) Oh Friends, yuh could run, but yuh can’t hide! Fierceness and pride might drive thee to great heights, but they won’t keep you there for very long. We all know the sin of pride is one the Lord absolutely detests. He detests them all, but something about pride and arrogance just gets His motors revving overtime. (smile) ‘We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.’ (Jer. 48: 29) And if we look around us today my brethren, that’s the predominant behaviour pattern we’ll see. It seems to be the in thing, the now style; the pride, arrogance and haughtiness of the nouveau riche and the young Turks. Everybody seems to be puffing out there chests and stepping high, as though they owned the world. But Friends, time longer than twine, and yuh see what the Lord cause to happen to all of us proud fools? The big houses, fancy cars, important jobs, expensive women and all the high living, it done cut out now, because we were getting above ourselves, figuring it was all our doing and running the way Lucifer wants us to run instead of the Lord’s way. But once you step away from the Lord, thinking that you don’t need Him, that you can do it all on your own, then you’re immediately marked for ruin and destruction, just like the proud, arrogant citizens of Moab. ‘And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the Lord. Fear, and the pit, and the snare shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord. He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab the year of their visitation saith the Lord.’ (Jer.48:42-44) As I said Friends, you can run but you can’t hide. And that’s the gospel truth! For yuh see how the Lord set it up; when you escape the fear, yuh fall in the pit, and if yuh manage to climb out the pit, then the snare trap yuh. So you can’t escape no how yuh try. And yuh notice mih people, that 2008-2009 was, or is the year of our visitation, for many of the dreams and schemes of our pride, haughtiness and arrogance have either crumbled, been considerably reduced, or simply brought to nought. And anyway you look at the current meltdown of our economy and the coincident rise in strife and violence, wars and rumours of wars, it all points to our disobedience and separation from God, our reliance on our own efforts as being the number one cause. Why? Because like the Moabites, we have magnified ourselves against the Lord. And He just won’t stand for that. We obviously ignored God, put Him on the back burner, some even gleefully and unceremoniously ran Him out of town. And then we expect to live in peace and prosperity? Steups! Obviously not, if the Lord has anything to say about it. Come on mih people, think smart nuh. Remember what Obadiah said: ‘Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.’ (Obad.4) So please, don’t be fooled by the empty promises of the enemy. Long lasting peace and prosperity is only possible by having the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as the ultimate power and authority in society. Once you abandon Him, you’re setting yourself up for ruin and destruction. Why are we such a hard-headed, stubborn people eh? Look at the number of times God’s chosen people, the Israelites, rebelled from under His rule and eventually were punished. What makes you think we’re different eh? But the beauty about them is that afterwards, they ran right back to the Lord, because deep down they knew that they were nothing without Him. And my brethren nothing has changed since then, except we’ve become more advanced in technology and science, which has unfortunately caused our egos to grow and make us feel invincible and in control. But that’s a fallacy my people; it’s just mirrors and sleight of hand. We’re no more invincible or in control than the Moabites or the numerous nations that prospered under the guidance and protection of the Most High God Jehovah, then perished when they got too big for their breeches and abandoned Him. And seeing that a short attention span is also the in thing, I’ll stop here for today. (smile) Doh want all yuh complaining about how it too long. So till then, God willing, Much LOVE!…remember…where there’s pride… falls will surely come…
