Romans 12:12.       Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation (always persevering); continuing instant (steadfastly) in prayer.

 HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! 

Well, a Happy Mother’s Day to all you beautiful Mothers out there! Yes, I know that some of you don’t deserve the term beautiful, because your motherly behaviour hasn’t been up to scratch, in fact, some of you have behaved downright unmotherly, but the truth is that you bore the pain and anguish to bring children into this crazy world, and for that alone, you deserve to be feted. So, please take a day to enjoy yourself; don’t think too much about anybody else but you, because this seems to be the one day in the year that we truly show mothers our deep appreciation. 

We should really show them our deepest appreciation every day, but the reality is that we don’t. And as we gather in the Lord’s Sanctuary on this beautiful Mother’s Day Sunday, we’re going to open with a wonderful song written especially for Mothers, titled ‘MY MOTHER’S LOVE!’ by Janice Kapp Perry, the accomplished and prolific American Composer. In an interview about the origins of the song, she says that some ten years ago, she was thrilled when Mack Wilberg, the Music Director of the Tabernacle Choir, formerly known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, asked her to write a new Mother’s Day song. 

She continues: ‘And of course you can only think of your own mother. If you had a good mother, she’s your inspiration for the song. My mother’s LOVE was the basis of everything good in my life. She was always there for me. My mother Ruth was a very enthusiastic person, energetic, she LOVED projects, played in a dance band with our father and wrote musicals for the community. As far as her children were concerned, she was just a cheerleader. She LOVED everything we did. Made us feel like we could do things.’ And that’s the beauty of a mother my people; a cheerleader, an encourager, a spreader of Christian joy and good cheer! 

Now let’s sing the slow and soulful song, a hauntingly beautiful melody, ever so rich and scintillating. We might not do as good a job of it like the Tabernacle Choir does, but we surely going to give it a good try. (smile) Singing: ‘My mother’s voice, the power of her teachings, Live in my soul and guide me still today. Her caring ways, her timeless words of wisdom Come forth to help me through each day. In each challenge, each choice, Above the world’s noise, I hear my mother’s voice. 

My mother’s faith, her prayers of earnest pleading, Turned me to God in moments of despair. Her calm assurance of His tender caring Taught me to turn to Him in prayer. Through my darkest of days, I reach to feel His grace. Such was my mother’s faith. My mother’s hands that lifted and protected, Those LOVING hands that soothed my fevered brow Were as a shield from every earthly trial, And still, the memory helps me now. And my heart is aware, the strength that I now share Came from my mother’s hands. 

My mother’s voice will live in me forever. A steady anchor for my reaching soul, As generations climb the path together to sweet eternities untold. My mother’s LOVE, the essence of her being, Flows in and through me every waking hour. A quiet strength grew from her constant caring, A legacy of saving power. By her words and her touch she strengthened me so much. I felt my mother’s LOVE… I felt my mother’s LOVE.’ 

Oh friends I doubt we can ascribe to our mothers any better sentiments on this Mother’s Day of 2023! The song says it all! The power of her teachings that still live in our souls and guide us every day. That takes me back to the words of Cousin Sol in Proverbs. ‘Train up a child in the way he should go; and (even) when he is old, he will not depart from it.’ (Prov. 22:6) Now that could be taken two ways; either as if you raise them properly, even when they are old they will follow the Christian guidelines you instilled in them, or as a warning to parents that if they allow their children to have their own way, they will not depart from that foolishness when they are old. 

But it shows that however children are raised, that’s how they usually carry on through life. And the fact is that mothers are the basic caregivers of the family; they carry children in their wombs for nine long, trying months, go through hell to birth them, (smile) then they also have the great responsibility to train them up in a proper manner. And it’s usually at the breast or the feet of our mothers that we learn about life. I like these words: ‘My mother’s faith, her prayers of earnest pleading, Turned me to God in moments of despair. Her calm assurance of His tender caring Taught me to turn to Him in prayer.’ 

They remind me of my own mother, Molly, who never took an easy step in her life, but was always joyful and God-fearing. And I know a lot of what I experienced from living with her through some rough times has made me the person I am today. I saw how she handled lack and never complained; out of a job for a couple of years and still remained hopeful. I learned these words of Romans 12 through the experiences I shared with her. ‘Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation (always persevering); continuing instant (steadfastly) in prayer.’ (Rom. 12:12) 

As a young lad, I often did not understand what she was doing, especially when the times were extremely difficult, and yet she always had a smile and a kind word to offer, always ‘Distributing to the necessity (needs) of saints; given to hospitality.’ (Rom. 12:13) I remember that whoever was at our table, always got the best of what we had. And I could never understand it, but she always said that’s how it ought to be, and she was doing it for me. 

Now I understand it all Molls sugar, because through your goodness and kindness to others, wherever I’ve been in this world, people have always been kind to me. They don’t know me from Adam, (smile) but are always reaching out a helping hand to me. And that’s the same way I try to live. Yes my people, a Mother’s hands and faith are ever so important in a child’s life, to protect and guide them along the right path. As the song says: ‘My mother’s voice will live in me forever. A steady anchor for my reaching soul.’ How true that is for all of us. 

It’s so easy to see that a mother is the most important person in a child’s life, for they set the tone and direction that child will take. So please let’s respect and honour our mother’s nuh. The Lord thought it so important for us to respect our parents, that He put it in His Ten Commandments. ‘Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.’ (Ex. 20: !2) 

And yuh know what friends, the closest thing to God on this earth is a kind and godly mother, for they exhibit much more of God’s goodness and His attributes than we men. That’s another reason right there to LOVE, honour and respect them and not abuse them, or treat them like second class citizens, the way that so many cultures are still doing these days. 

And we couldn’t get a better ending for today than these words from the end of the song: ‘My mother’s LOVE, the essence of her being, Flows in and through me every waking hour. A quiet strength grew from her constant caring, A legacy of saving power. By her words and her touch she strengthened me so much. I felt my mother’s LOVE… I felt my mother’s LOVE.’ 

Now, if we are truthful to ourselves, we will all acknowledge the great debt we owe to our mothers. So, let’s get out there and repay what little of it we can! Much LOVE!

…the epitome of motherhood…Mary…the mother of Jesus…as she quietly bore His terrible suffering…for that’s what mothers do…

Matthew 5:14a. Ye are the light of the world.

I don’t like it friends. It’s a lazy-day Saturday and yet I’ve been up and about for a while now. What’s happening eh? Why didn’t I just lie in bed and laze around? And it’s not like I went to bed so early that I could afford to get up early. But unfortunately, that’s how the cookie crumbles. I guess the Good Lord figured I should be up and about His business early on such a beautiful sunshiny day. And if the sunshine holds, it will be the fifth day straight of pure, unadulterated sunlight. 

That brings us to the message of Christ’s followers being lights in this dark, evil and ungodly world. And after forgiving the adulterous woman (John 8:1-11) Jesus said in no uncertain terms: ‘I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.’ (John 8:12) Yes my brethren, Jesus came into the world to give us light, so that we can see in the darkness, and resuscitated life that we could live in His light. 

One commentary states: ‘We can’t see our future, direction, or destination, but Jesus can. Like the lighthouse guides the ship, Jesus directs us toward God’s light. The light of Christ guides us through the darkness of sin, life, and struggle both spiritually and literally.’ And is that all ever so true! That’s exactly what Jesus does for us when we dedicate our lives to Him, trust and fully surrender to His guiding light. 

Then later on, after healing a blind man, Jesus again claims to be the light of the world, saying: ‘As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ (John 9:5) Now, that raises an interesting question: while He is on earth, He is the light of the world, but what happens when He isn’t here on earth eh? 

Don’t worry about that, for Jesus in His awesome wisdom also made allowances for it by saying in the Sermon on the Mount: ‘Ye are the light of the world.’ (Matt. 5:14a) Meaning, that when He leaves Mother Earth, His followers will then be the light of the world. So yuh see, he has all the bases covered. (smile) 

Now, being the light of the world is an enormous task, one that we are not doing so well at, because our light is not shining as brightly as it ought to. Jesus said that: ‘A city set on a hill cannot be hid.’ (Matt. 5:14b) And that’s the indisputable truth. But unfortunately, too many of us supposed believers are not set on a hill, so that whatever light we are exuding is not being seen far and wide. And that’s a major problem, for the light is only valuable as far as it can be seen. 

That means friends, we have to do much better in our lighthouse work. That’s climb higher up that proverbial hill and shine even brighter than we’re currently doing, because the light of Jesus is very critical in today’s dark, unbelieving and evil world. And Jesus further explained about the purpose of light. ‘Neither do men light a candle (lamp), and put it under a bushel (basket), but on a candlestick (lampstand); and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.’ (Matt. 5:15) 

That tells us we’re not supposed to be hiding our light, like so many of us are doing,  instead of spreading it forth, so that as many people as possible can see it and thus come in from the darkness of Satan’s evil world into the bright light of Jesus’ magnificent kingdom! Wow! That’s our bounden duty! Consequently, Jesus exhorted His followers. ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’ (Matt. 5:16) 

Now that’s exactly what is so badly needed from Christians today; showing the world their light through their good works and true Christian living; not the half-hearted, lacklustre and lackadaisical attitudes and efforts we are actually putting forth. The fact is that too many of us are either afraid of what the world will say if we totally engage in the will of Jesus, or are simply lazy and uninterested in doing His will. 

And that’s why so many unbelievers are not turning to Jesus, and many former believers are turning away from Him. Too many of us are walking around with dirty lampshades, full of black soot, that only keep the light contained within the shade. But my people, we desperately need to clean our lampshades so that they can allow the brightness behind them to explode into this dark, ungodly world! That’s the only way the unbeliever will see the benefits of following Jesus and thus desire to know Him. 

Now let’s not forget either that in Jesus’ eyes, we are also the salt of the earth. Yes, my faithful brethren, we’re also supposed to act like that marvellous substance that provides taste and flavour, as well as be a preservative, melt coldness and heal wounds. Jesus advised us thus in the same Sermon on the Mount. ‘Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour (flavour), wherewith (by what) shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.’ (Matt. 5:13) 

And that’s the truth in spades! But sadly, it also applies to too many supposed believers today. Too many of us have lost our tasty flavour, our zest for life, for Jesus and His kingdom work, and are now mere caricatures of our former selves. But thankfully there is always hope in Jesus, and in these cruel and evil last days, it is imperative that ALL believers renew their commitment to Jesus and His kingdom work, so that all over the world, we can forward His Name and the good news that He brings. 

It’s ever so necessary that we begin a spiritual revival, put new oil in our lamps, clean up our lampshades, and get back our salty taste so that we can add the marvellous flavour and light of Christ to this dark and  tasteless world! Oh friends, it’s high time to reimplement Christ’s Great Commission, so that we can further His LOVE Revolution! And that’s my fervent prayer for us today! Much LOVE!

…what’s the purpose of living life…if it’s dark and tasteless…none whatsoever…so let’s make it bright and tasty nuh…

Psalm 128:1.        Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.

Oh friends, this Friday morning, as we declare (yesss!!!) ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!’ we also have to consider having five straight days of wonderful sunshine, because that seems like a distinct possibility! Wow! My trusty computer tells me it’s 23 and sunny. In that case, we might just need to think about praying for a li’l rain to cool things down if the weather keeps being so wonderful in my neck of the woods. (smile) As we would say, it’s either feast or famine. 

But here’s an interesting angle on it all. I just opened the Good Library and it opened unto the Book of Psalms, and my eyes were led to this particular psalm, Psalm 128, one that I’ve never paid much attention to, but it does contribute a wise and wonderful message in its title which simply says: ‘Fear the Lord.’  Now that’s certainly a tidbit of wisdom if there ever was one! 

And why is that you ask? Well, first off, the fear he’s referring to is not the emotion of fear or fright, but one of reverence, of respect, of worship, although we should also fear the Lord in the other respect, because the only thing as powerful as His LOVE is His wrath, and we certainly don’t want to feel the latter. Just look at what the Israelites suffered for their stubborn disobedience. And Jesus did say that we should fear the Lord and not man, because He is the only one who could destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matt. 10:28) 

However, let’s listen to the psalmist as he declares: (wow!!!) ‘Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands (the fruit of thy labour): happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of (in the heart of) thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.’ (Ps. 128:1-3) 

Mama oh Mama! Yuh hear that mih people? If we fear the Lord then our house will indeed be blessed, enjoying the fruits of our labour, with a fruitful wife and wonderful children! Now what more can a man ask of this life eh? Nothing really! But the important thing is that only happens when we reverence the Lord and walk in His ways. And that’s something so many of us in these evil and unfortunate times can’t seem to understand, otherwise we’d be doing just that. 

But instead so many of us are turning away from the Lord to other insecure and worthless ventures, and many of us who claim to still believe are not truly walking in His fear and commandments, but have one foot in the world and one in the kingdom, trying to keep our chances alive by playing both sides against the middle. But friends, I ‘m here to tell you that doesn’t work. You must choose either one or the other and go after it wholeheartedly. And remember Jesus said it so plainly: ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’ (Matt. 6:33) 

And that’s no lie! When you seek God first and foremost, He will indeed give you all that you need. Why do you think Bruh David wrote: ‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want?’ Because he knew for a fact, from personal experience, that if he sincerely sought the Lord above all else, He would look after him, both physically and spiritually. And the Lord will do the same for anyone who sincerely seeks and reverences Him. He’s promised never to leave nor forsake us, and He is faithful to keep His promises. 

And if you still don’t believe me, then listen as the psalmist continues: ‘Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.’ (Ps. 128:4-6) Oh my people, why are we so foolish and adamant about turning away from God eh, or not paying Him His proper respect and due, since in so many places of His Word it says that’s necessary to have a good life. 

Look at Psalm 1, which pointedly tells us: ‘Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly (wicked), nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate (ponder by talking to himself) day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers (channels) of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.’ (Ps. 1:1-3)  

Now that’s not rocket science my brethren, so why can’t we simply accept and live it eh? Where’s the faith in Jesus Christ we’re supposed to have? Obviously it’s sadly lacking, otherwise we wouldn’t be living the sub-standard and mediocre Christian lives we’re living. Now listen to these opening verses of Psalm 119: ‘Blessed are the undefiled (blameless) in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.’ (Ps. 119:1-3) 

There again friends, it says we will be blessed if we walk in the way of the Lord. Simple common sense my brethren! But sorry, I forgot that common sense no longer exists in our society, we just have a herd mentality, and foolishly run with the foolish crowd.  But there’s hope for us yet, because with the Lord, there’s always hope, so let’s go to Him now, through our Friday Chant and ask for His divine help with our problems. 

Altogether now: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through this past week. You know it’s been rough… what with all the confusion and anxiety caused by the pandemic and our many other serious problems. We can’t fix them on our own Lord, so we desperately need your help. 

Oh heavenly Father, with your omnipotent help, and our trusting faith, we know that we can stand strong and steadfast and defeat the simmering unrest in our land. So Lord, we sincerely ask you today to give those involved in the forefront of this serious and unexpected storm, the wise guidance to handle the situation properly, without further serious setbacks. And please help those of us who must go out to work amidst all the confusion, to be responsible and to stay safe. 

And Lord, we fervently pray that You’ll use this situation to return backsliders to your fold, show them the error of their ways. And please introduce a new flock of believers, who will embrace your LOVE and compassion by the example, we, your faithful believers set. Yes Lord, please use this pandemic, the bubbling discontent and dissatisfaction in our land, as a means of restoring faith in You, so that our sinful world can wake up and smell the coffee, wake up and smell it sweet and strong! We pray this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen!’ 

Now let’s wake up nuh friends, and do what we know we’re supposed to do, if we expect the Lord’s help. Much LOVE!

…it takes two to tango…the Lord won’t help…unless we’re obedient…

Deuteronomy 8:18a.      But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth,

Now is it possible for us to get four consecutive days of glorious sunshine in this wet and cloudy spring season…although the supposed experts are saying that it might be mostly cloudy? And the answer is a very affirmative YES!  Because they don’t control the weather, but our Lord and Saviour Jesus does, and He can cause it to be totally sunny after all. Praise His holy name! 

Yes friends, our great God can do anything He so desires. He desired to create this universe and all therein, and that’s exactly what He did. He desired to give His greatest creation free will, knowing that we could and would abuse it, but He didn’t want a set of robots, so He took the chance on us. And we did abuse His goodwill…and are doing so to this very day…possibly even more so than at any other time of our existence, for now we desire to totally get rid of our Creator. 

What kind of gratitude is that eh? None whatsoever! Especially after He gifted us with the life of His sinless Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for our abominable sins and thus have the option of being reconciled back to him through His awesome grace, mercy and forgiveness. But no, we’ve gotten so big for our britches, falsely believing that all the advancements and great wealth we’ve built up in our society to be our doing, and not rightly the Lord’s, through His guidance and direction. 

Remember Moses’ warning to the children of Israel, about when they went into the Promised Land and got wealthy? ‘Then thine heart be lifted up (you become proud), and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint. 

Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove (test) thee, to do thee good at thy latter end. And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.’ (Deut. 8:14-18) 

Now, Moses was talking there to the young group of Israelites who were born in the wilderness during the forty wandering years. That’s because the Lord decreed that none who came out of Egypt beside Joshua and Caleb, not even Moses, would enter the Promised Land, for all their disobedience and disgusting behaviour, despite His amazing LOVING-kindness towards them. 

But sadly, that is exactly what that young group did when they got in there and got wealthy. They forgot Moses’ warnings, and promptly moved away from the God of their fathers, turned to idols and worshipped the gods of the nations around them, whom the Lord had specifically told them not to associate with, because He knew that was exactly what would happen. 

They obviously did not pay heed to these ending words of Moses’ message. ‘And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish, because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord you God.’ (Deut. 8:19-20) And perish they did, every time they turned away from the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, they underwent some disastrous calamity. 

And believe me friends, that is exactly what’s happening to us today. Look at the chaos in our current society, it all stems from a rejection of Almighty God! He might not be doing it personally, but He’s certainly not stopping us from destroying ourselves, which we would not be doing, if we were living in the LOVE, mercy and forgiveness that He desires of us. What amazes me though, is that every time the Israelites turned away from God and suffered for it, they eventually turned back to Him and were restored in His fellowship. 

However, our generation is too proud and arrogant to even consider doing that. We were once a godly society, going along very well, then like Satan we got too proud because of the advancements we were making. Next thing we want to kick out God because we think it’s our own doing. Let me remind us though of the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, who at one time was the most powerful man in the world. He had a dream and the prophet Daniel warned him of its negative consequences if he continued in a certain line of behaviour. 

Daniel’s parting words were: ‘Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness (by being righteous), and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening (prolonging) of thy tranquility.’ (Dan. 4:27) But the king did not listen, and a year later, while walking in the palace, He ‘spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom (a royal dwelling) by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?’ (Dan. 4:30) 

But lo and behold, while the king was speaking, a sentence of madness was right then being pronounced on him, by the Lord God Jehovah. And yes, he was a pagan king, but even pagan kings get power through the hands of the Lord God Jehovah. Remember Daniel’s words when he received the meaning of the king’s dreams. ‘Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his. And he changeth the times and seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up (raises up) kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know (have) understanding.’ (Dan. 2:20-21) 

Yes, whatever happens in the universe comes under the eventual control of Almighty God, regardless of race, creed, colour or culture. That very day, Neb was sentenced to seven years of madness, to eating grass like an ox, ‘until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomever he will.’ (Dan. 4:32) And after seven years of madness, Neb’s senses were reverted, and he praised the Lord God with such enthusiasm. ‘Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgement (justice), and those that walk in pride he is able to abase (humble).’ (Dan. 4:37) 

Oh my people why can’t we learn from the examples of the Israelites and Nebuchadnezzar and turn back to the God of our fathers’, who LOVES us so much that He even sent His Son to die to pay for our sins. It’s the only wise move we can make in these very trying times. And for those of us who are attempting to do just that, let’s go home declaring (yesss!!!) our Thursday Blessings, blessings that have been generously bestowed on us by our heavenly Father to help us do His earthly work. 

As one voice: ‘I declare that I am blessed with God’s supernatural wisdom and receive clear direction for my life! I declare today that I am blessed with creativity, courage, talent and abundance! I am blessed with a strong will, self-control and self-discipline! I am blessed with a great family, good friends, good health, faith, favour and fulfillment! I am blessed with success, supernatural strength, promotion and divine protection! I am blessed with a compassionate heart and a positive outlook on life! I declare that any curse or negative word that’s ever been spoken over me is broken right now in the name of Jesus! I declare that everything I put my hands to, will prosper and succeed! I declare it today and every day! Amen!’ 

Now, let’s get out into the evil world and use those blessings to make a positive difference in Christ’s name. Remember friends, it all depends on us! Much LOVE!

Matthew 6:33.        But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Yes! It looks like we’re going to get three consecutive sunshiny days at long last! Glory be! You in the tropics wouldn’t understand how good that can be during the wet, rainy spring season. And yes, the frozen ground and the plants do need water to moisten them up and give them nourishment to grow, but too much of a good thing can also be bad. Just look at the recent severe flooding that’s occurred in the Western Province of British Columbia, where they got too much rain, and the forest fires in the middle Provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, where they didn’t get enough. 

Life is meant to be a fine balancing act, and if anything drives it off that precarious scale, disaster often follows. And we can see that in the life of man too. He was made to live in communion with His creator and heavenly Father, but he’s stubbornly, and oh so foolishly turned away from Him! So what’s the result of that imbalance eh? A chaotic world, where wars and rumours of war reign, where hatred, religious conflicts, poverty, sickness, economic disaster, climate change and the disasters that they bring are running riot. 

And we can carry on with much more of the chaotic stuff that’s happening because mankind has turned away from a gracious, merciful, forgiving and LOVING God. That’s the tragedy of the ages! And until we wake up and realize why our world is in such a calamitous state, we’ll keep on the downward trend to total destruction. Can you believe that at this stage of our existence, knowing our very fragile current situation, despite the overwhelming disaster that one mistake, or one madman can trigger, we’re still in a race to build bigger and better weapons of mass destruction? 

What’s wrong with us eh? Why are we so pig-headed that we keep rolling along the path that will bring certain destruction, and not the one that will bring redemption and salvation? Didn’t we hear, or didn’t we understand what Jesus said so long ago? ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’ (Matt. 6:33) Yes friends, man was made to seek first the spiritual things of God’s kingdom and not the material things of this evil and fallen world. 

If we make the righteousness that’s characteristic of God’s kingdom our priority, then Jesus promises that all the material stuff we need will be supplied. Bruh Paul also promised it when he said: ‘But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’ (Phil. 4:19) What’s it eh? Don’t we have faith in the promises of God? Don’t we think we can live a life that’s characterized by the righteousness of God? If not, then the words spoken by Bruh Paul to the Philippians: ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,’ (Phil. 4:13) are a complete and utter waste of time. 

In fact, it’s a total lie! And all else that flows from it is nothing but fallacy and falsehood. Oh my fellow believers, Jesus will NEVER lie to us, or refuse us His help in anything we undertake in His will and His name. Let’s believe that nuh, because it’s what our faith is based on. Otherwise all the fuss we make about His death and resurrection, salvation, eternal life et al is a complete waste of time. We cannot believe one aspect of Jesus’ ministry and philosophy and don’t believe the others. So it’s very necessary that we believe it all if we are to benefit from it. 

And if you don’t believe that God will supply all our needs if we put our sincere trust and faith in Him, then listen to what He did for Cousin Sol, way back when, when he became king of Israel on the death of his father, Bruh David. One night, in a vision, the Lord asked Cousin Sol what He wanted, and he asked for wisdom and understanding to rule the people in a wise and godly manner. Now the Lord gave him that wisdom and understanding, that’s why to this this day, he’s still known as the wisest man ever, because the Lord said; ‘so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee, shall any arise like unto thee.’ (1 Kin. 3:12) 

But listen to this, as the Lord continues: ‘And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any (anyone) among the kings like unto thee all thy days.’ (1 Kin. 3:13) Yuh see that friends, Cousin Sol didn’t ask for wealth and honour, but the Lord gave them to him anyway, because of his trust and faith, and in such abundance too, that no other king was as rich and honoured as him. But yuh know what, the Lord interspersed one proviso amongst all the showers of blessings. 

Listen up: ‘And if you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen (prolong) thy days.’ (1 Kin. 3:14) Oh my fellow believers, the key to the whole thing, the key to all the wealth and honour of the kingdom of heaven is simply walking in the Lord’s will and ways. He doesn’t expect us to be perfect, because He knows that He did not create perfect but imperfect, sinful, disobedient souls. Just look at some of the stuff that Bruh David did, nuh; adultery and murder, yet the Lord still considered him a friend and a man after his own heart and made him the greatest king ever of Israel. 

But the big difference is that Bruh David always sought the Lord. He knew on which side his bread was buttered, and thus brought every problem to God and did his best to stay on the straight and narrow path. So why is it so difficult for us to understand that our bread is also buttered on the same side as Bruh David’s was eh, and with even small faith, keep going to Him for refuge and understanding, and the things we need in this life? I can’t answer that question, but I do know that I’m trying to do like Bruh David, and though I’m far from perfect and have made many mistakes, the Lord has still blessed me with stuff that I certainly don’t deserve. 

Life hasn’t been easy, but all through it I can now see His hand working on my behalf. And He will work on the behalf of anyone who sincerely puts their trust in His Son Jesus Christ and do their best to stick to His statutes and commandments. And what better scripture to close with than these words from Bruh Paul to Timothy. ‘But refuse (reject) profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.’ (1 Tim. 4:7-8) 

What more can I say eh? Not much. But for those of us who are sincerely trying to practice godliness, let’s go home declaring (awright!!!) our Wednesday Wail, letting the whole world know of our marvellous position in Christ Jesus. Altogether now: ‘Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: I’m so glad to be alive on this Wednesday! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: Thank God the breath of life is still flowing through me on this Wednesday! I am halfway home. My hands are fixed securely on the plough, and I’m not turning back. I’m not looking back at the past, not focusing on what has gone before. But my eyes are fixed straight ahead; straight ahead to a glorious future with Jesus. Glory Hallelujah!’ 

Now friends, let’s just keep om seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness so that others can see that it works. Much LOVE!

…the devil is destroying our world…so why aren’t we turning to the One who wishes to save it eh…Almighty God…

Colossians 3:13b.      …if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Oh boy, is it possible for us to get two sunny days with temps in the mid-teens on two successive days in this spring season? I certainly hope so. And although we like the rain, but it’s intermittent character and the dark, cloudy, skies it brings, interspersed with a wimpy sun, doesn’t exactly exhilarate the senses (smile) And yes, although we do have Jesus who can alleviate our every mood swing, it’s still nice to have one strong situation or the other, not a li’l of this and a li’l of that. 

Now to help us curb that dissatisfaction, here is a poem from our One Year Book of Bible Verses with writings By Ruth Harms Calkin, most appropriately titled ‘Need of Patience.’ (smile) So please read with me: ‘O God How pointedly You speak to my heart when You say “You have need of patience… Remorsefully I acknowledge Your truth For there is nothing I need more. I am so easily disturbed, Lord So many little things annoy me. Patience is simply not a virtue of mine. I’m impatient with our neighbour Who mows his lawn but once every six weeks. I’m impatient with our newsboy Every time he misses our front porch. 

Yesterday a friend kept me waiting And I robed my impatience in self-pity. Shoes pushed under the bed An unrinsed coffee cup An overly detailed story Toys scattered on our lawn – How I murmur and fret. (Sometimes I explode.) I’m impatient with myself, Lord My foolish mistakes, my failures And often I’m impatient with You. I am like a petulant child Who insists on an answer – now. Yes, God, I have need of patience. But I will not be discouraged Nor will I continue to flog myself. Again, Your word speaks pointedly: “My God shall supply all your need…” The very need You know I have Is the very need You will supply. You will renew me in patience. In You there is hope!’ 

And that’s the indisputable truth friends! In our great and merciful, forgiving and LOVING God, there is indeed hope! There’s always hope to be found in Him, regardless of the circumstances. We just have to come to Him in all sincerity and truth! And do most of us ever need patience, especially in these times when our society demands immediate gratification? Yes, everything must be now for now, in this busy, stressful, fast food, hurried age, with almost instant communications and amazing amenities that lead us to think or believe we’re entitled to the easy life, and we want and expect it RIGHT NOW! 

But that’s the furthest thing from the truth my people. In the world you might get away with those expectations and demands, but in God’s kingdom, His economy, you certainly won’t, because He demands patience of His followers, and is a stickler for us waiting on His perfect timing. And believe me, He’s NEVER late. Sometimes it might seem so, but in reality, He’s always on time! Now, He might cut it somewhat tight, but if you look through and consider all the times you’ve depended on Him, though you might have been stressed to the max, waiting, He’s always showed up just in time to alleviate or neutralize your problem. 

And I can tell from personal experience that that is an acquired virtue. That last minute thing was something we always had difficulty with. We didn’t doubt that our problems would be solved, but the waiting to the last minute always got me exasperated with the Lord. And that’s the thing about patience in general, it doesn’t just happen overnight, it’s something that’s acquired over time, acquired by going through rough and tough situations and seeing them work out in your favour in the end. That’s the only way to build patience. 

And sadly, I found that out the hard way, when in my naivety I asked the Lord to give me the patience of Job. Now, we all know the serious, debilitating, life-changing circumstances Job went through, despite his supposed righteousness. But he didn’t curse the Lord like his wife invited him to. (Job 2:9-10) No, though he obviously queried his unfortunate circumstances, he remained faithful, and the Lord eventually blessed Him with even more than he had before. 

How many of us, given that terrible adversity, would have been able to say like Job did: ‘Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways (defend my ways) before him. He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.’ (Job 13:15-16) Now those were indeed powerful words of faith in a time of unspeakable calamity. And not many, then or now, can muster it. But that’s the kind of faith and trust that our God expects, no, demands of us. 

In all and every circumstance, be it good or disastrous, He wants us to have undying faith, to rely on His amazing grace and mercy, to know and understand His great LOVE for us, and that NOTHING, no NOTHING can ever tear us apart from Him! And the scriptures associated with our poem today, come from Bruh Paul’s missive to the Colossians. Let’s hear the New Living Translation found in the book first, then we’ll read the real thing from the King James version. (smile)

 ‘Since God chose you to be holy people whom he LOVES, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. You must make allowances for each other’s faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.’ (Col, 3:12-13 NLT) Now that’s the basic truth of the scripture, but it sounds somewhat banal and wimpy. (smile) 

Now, here’s the real McCoy from the KJV. ‘Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies (tender mercies), kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing (bearing with) one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.’ (Col. 3:12-13 KJV) Now doesn’t that sound more like real scripture, with more punch that the earlier translation. (smile) Obviously I am biased towards the King James Version, but the truth is some of the other translations either water down the scripture or make it wordier and more longwinded, which makes it even more difficult to understand. 

Anyway, the long and short of the story is that as true believers we need to treat each other much better than we’re currently doing, with this verse being the crowning glory. ‘And above all these things put on charity (LOVE), which is the bond of perfectness.’ (Col. 3:14) And the scholars explain that here ‘LOVE is called the bond of perfectness, because it is the crowning grace completing the list of virtues required for perfectness or spiritual maturity. As a “bond” it binds all the other virtues together in harmony and unity.’ And so it does. 

Now, for those of us who are sincerely trying to live in LOVE, let’s go home declaring (yesss!!!) our Tuesday Mantra, letting all and sundry know to whom we belong, lock, stock and barrel. As one voice: ‘In God’s eyes, I’m not what I do. I’m not what I have. I’m not what people say about me. I am the beloved of God, that’s who I am. No one can take that from me. I don’t have to worry. I don’t have to hurry. I can trust my friend Jesus and share His LOVE with my immediate neighbours, as well as with the whole wide world! Glory be!’ 

And having made that declaration (wow!!!) it’s now our bounden duty to go out and share the amazing LOVE and friendship of Christ with all we meet, so that they too can come to know and LOVE Him like do! Much LOVE!

… patience…only comes…through hardship and the passing of time…

Psalm 118:8.         It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.

And the universe turns as it was programmed to do by its Creator, Almighty God! And, unfortunately, it turns on to the day we call Monday, the first day of the work week, meaning it’s time to go back out into the unfair, cruel world and labour for our living. Ah friends, that’s something many of us don’t like to do, but do it we must if we want to partake of the good things of life. And the sad thing is that as we get more and more amenities which lessen the actual physical activity we need to put out, the lazier and less interested in work we become. 

To make matters even worse, this new level of Artificial Intelligence that we’ve recently attained, where you can have stuff done, or written for you by simply issuing a command, is just going to turn our world even more topsy-turvy than it already is, for we won’t be sure if the documents or whatever were done by human hands and minds or by Artificial Intelligence, and whether they are true. And since working from home became a big thing during the recent pandemic, and it hasn’t been straightened out one way or the other as yet, and will most likely become some sort of hybrid animal, this AI stuff is just muddling up the situation even more. 

But the good news is that whatever situation a true believer in Christ Jesus finds him or herself, we are assured of His help and succour. This is His faithful promise, as first outlined by Moses to the children of Israel. ‘And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee, neither be ye discouraged.’ (Deut. 31:8) And the author of Hebrews reiterated it for the New Testament church, when he wrote: ‘Let your conversation (conduct) be without covetousness: and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.’ (Heb. 13:5) 

Now, if there’s one thing we’re ever so sure of is that our God NEVER reneges on His promises! And the author of Hebrews also reminds us of that: ‘Let us hold fast the profession (confession) of our faith (hope) without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised:)’ (Heb. 10:23) Therefore, as the author of Hebrews rightly concludes: ‘So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall (can) do unto me.’ (Heb. 13:6) And that, my people, should be the motto all Christians live their lives by; not fearing what our fellow man can do to us. 

The psalmist said it quite plainly too in Psalm 118: ‘I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large (broad) place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. (The middle verse of the Bible) It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.’ (Ps. 118: 5-9) 

And that’s the gospel truth! And if you don’t believe it, then listen to Isaiah speak on the Lord’s behalf. ‘I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou that thou shouldest be afraid of a (mortal) man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass. And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to (when preparing to) destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?’ (Is. 51:12-13) That’s a good question friends, where is the oppressor’s fury now eh? (smile) 

And if you still don’t believe there’s nothing to fear from man, then listen to Jesus put it straight and plain as He always does. ‘What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to kill both soul and body in hell.’ (Matt. 10:27-28) And the only entity able to kill both body and soul is Almighty God, the Maker of both the body and soul. So that is whom we should fear, not mankind whose body dies, and whose soul can be destroyed in hell, by its Maker. 

So, with all of that in mind, let’s go to our Maker, through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn and ask for His grace and mercy to solve our many problems. As one voice: ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise Your Holy Name and thank You this Monday morning for life and strong faith in Christ, despite the mass confusion in our world. We desperately need Your divine help, for You are the ONLY ONE with the power to solve our many problems. 

Heavenly Father, we admit that we have all sinned and seriously disobeyed Your Word, but we know that You are a merciful, forgiving and gracious God, who has faithfully promised to hear and answer our prayers when we humble ourselves, pray, and sincerely seek Your face. That’s why we come to You now, with sincere repentance in our hearts, pleading with You to give us wise guidance and direction to alleviate our problems. 

And Father, we pray that you will ease the pain of the many who are suffering from negative situations. Please show them Your awesome grace and mercy, and keep Your promise that You’ll hear our prayer, forgive us, and heal our land if we turn from our evil ways. Show this evil world that You are indeed Jehovah Rapha; the God who heals! We pray this in the holy and blessed name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen! And again, we say: Amen!’ 

Now, let’s remember that divine help will only come when there’s improvement in our behaviour. Much LOVE!

1 Corinthians 3:11.         For other foundation can no man lay that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Gather round friends and neighbours, gather round, for it’s the big day of Sunday, when believers in Jesus Christ gather in the sanctuary to praise, worship and fellowship in His glorious name! And all God’s children said a loud and grateful: ‘Blessed be the name of the Lord Jesus, our King, our Prince of Peace and our heavenly Intercessor amongst other things. And today’s song of praise and worship is a marvellous ditty from the eighteen hundreds, most appropriately titled ‘My Hope is Built on Nothing Less.’ It was written by an Englishman, Edward Mote (1797-1874). 

Here’s a short commentary on Mote’s life and the writing of the Hymn. ‘Edward Mote wrote just one hymn in his lifetime. From what we know of his life, “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less” was just as much an anthem of his own testimony as it has become for believers all over the world. Having grown up knowing nothing of God or His existence, Mote first attended church and became a Christian as a young adult. While still a new believer, he was compelled to try his hand at hymn writing. Thus, Mote wrote from a basic, yet profound understanding of his salvation. 

Later that same week, he visited a married couple at the wife’s sickbed. Without a hymnal handy to lead them in a song of worship, Mote produced a folded-up piece of paper upon which he had worked out four verses and a chorus. Together, they sang the hymn now known as “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less” for the first time, blessed by the truths of God’s Word in the lyrics.’ 

And are those words ever gospel truth my brethren, providing assurance and refuge for all who believe in the holy name of Jesus. And it certainly seems to be a testimony to Mote’s own life as ‘Through the preaching of the Rev. J. Hyatt, of Tottenham Court Road Chapel, he underwent a great spiritual change; and ultimately he became a Baptist minister. For the last 26 years of his life, he was pastor at Horsham, Sussex, where he died Nov. 13, 1874.’ And who says our great God doesn’t move in mysterious ways eh! He certainly does! 

Now, let’s finally get to offering those sacrificial praises in a joyful, up-tempo, scintillating version of the song, showing our heartfelt sincerity. Singing: ‘My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. (Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.) When darkness veils his lovely face I rest on His unchanging grace In every high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain) 

His oath, his covenant, his blood Supports me in the ‘whelming flood When all around my soul gives way He then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain) Not earth, nor hell, my soul can move; I rest upon unchanging LOVE. I trust his righteous character, his counsel, promise, and his pow’r. (Refrain) When he shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in him be found, dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. (Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand… On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand… Oh thank You Lord…You solid rock…’  

That was wonderful friends, heaven felt it too!  (smile) And the indisputable truth is you simply cannot find a more solid rock than our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to build your life on! Yes sir! That’s because Christ is the sole means of our salvation. Our hope is truly built on nothing less than Jesus. He is the foundation stone of our faith, it’s author and finisher! It all focuses on His death, His resurrection and ascension. Without Him and those three activities we’d still be headed straight for hellfire and damnation, with no other choice. 

But He, in His goodness and LOVE for sinful man, sacrificed His sinless life so that we could have another option; that of salvation and eternal life, instead of just eternal separation!  And these words of Moses’ song, for the people of Israel to remember their covenant with Almighty God, written and sung long before Jesus ever came to earth, testify to His rocklike greatness.

‘Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine (teaching) shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: Because I will publish (proclaim) the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgement: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.’ (Deut. 32:1-4) Yes my people, Moses went through so much with the Lord, had so much personal testimony with Him, that if he says the Lord is a Rock, then you’ve got to believe him. 

And Jesus Himself corroborated Moses’ words when He said: ‘Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a (the) rock:  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a (the) rock. And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.’ (Matt. 7:24-27) 

Oh my fellow saints, if we hear Jesus words and don’t do them, then we are indeed like the foolish man who built his house on the shifting, insecure and sinking sand. That’s why the song says, ALL other ground besides Jesus is sinking sand! Yes, the only wise and sensible place to build your eternal house is on the word of Jesus. For as the first sentence of the song says in no uncertain terms: ‘My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.’ 

And that’s where our hope ought to be friends, because it’s the shed blood of Jesus that washed away our sins, cleansed us and made us righteous in the Lord’s sight! Nothing else but the blood of Jesus was strong, powerful and clean enough to pay the enormous price for our abominable sins. That’s why we have to take our problems to the foot of the cross and lay them there, and accept the grace, mercy and LOVING-kindness that emanates and radiates from it. 

And we all can testify to the statements in the song; Christ’s unchanging grace and LOVE, His steadfast anchor in the storms of our lives. And nothing in earth or hell can break our trust in His character, His counsel, His promise and His awesome power. Oh friends, what more can I say eh…. Oh wait, there’s one last verse from Bruh Paul to the Corinthians, where he steadfastly proclaims: ‘For other foundation can no man lay that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.’ (1 Cor. 3:11) Yes, any other foundation that’s built upon beside Jesus, is doomed to destruction! Much LOVE!

…to know Jesus…is to LOVE Him…and realize that He’s our EVERYTHING…

Matthew 28:19a.       Go ye therefore and teach (make disciples of) all nations,

Well, at long last a sunny day without any foreboding clouds! Glory be my people! And there couldn’t be a better day for it than this lazy-day Saturday which is all consumed with the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla. Brother, that will be fodder for the news mills and social media for weeks to come. Especially since they’ve now become a somewhat dysfunctional family through the public spectacle that’s being brought on by Andrew’s and Harry’s antics. 

Now that’s not totally true, for like any other family, they’ve always had problems, remember the days of Princess Margaret, who flouted a lot of the royal traditions. But I guess back then, the news media was not as nasty, vituperative and greedy as they are now, neither were there the many current outlets of social media. Everybody will have their own take on the subject, and every real or imagined scandal will be dragged back into the public’s eye, though very few will ever know the true reality of the situation. 

And what we all fail to realize is that they are people, and people don’t always get along, although they might have close ties together. They’re no different to any other dysfunctional family in our society, though they hold a loftier position than most, but that doesn’t make them immune to the problems that befall all of us. And not everybody can keep a stiff upper lip and strong backbone for as long as the late Queen did. And though we expect the Royal Family to meet a higher standard than ordinary families, the saying, you make the children but not their minds, goes for them as well as for all of us. 

Times change and so do people. And we’ve become such full-fledged hypocrites, that we just LOVE to criticize others, when we’re doing the same thing, or even worse. Yes, we’ve become a weak, over-critical, permissive, compassion-less, entitled, drama -filled society. And unfortunately, it will only get worse, unless and until we supposed believers in Christ Jesus, develop some kind of unity and stand up and fight the evil and nastiness that’s overwhelming our world. 

Ah friends, I know that seems like a huge and somewhat impossible task, but we know that with Jesus in our corner, ALL things are possible. And furthermore, it wouldn’t have been this bad if we had come together earlier and stood up as one and fought the enemy mano-a-mano, instead of sitting on our fat fannies through, fear, indifference or whatever caused our lack of involvement. Now, though the task has become more difficult, it’s still not too late to begin doing something worthwhile. 

But we have to begin RIGHT NOW! We can’t put off our serious involvement in Christ’s LOVE Revolution any longer. And the first and possibly most important move is becoming a unified, rather than divided church. For the enemy will just keep dividing and conquering us, if we don’t unify and stay unified. Whatever happened to Jesus’ promise that upon the rock, the body of believers, He would build His church eh? 

When Jesus asked the disciples: ‘But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. and I say unto thee, That thou art Peter (a stone), and upon this rock, (large rock) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’ (Matt. 16:15-18) 

Now, contrary to popular opinion, Jesus didn’t mean that He was going to build His church on Peter, but on all the disciples, the work and doctrine that they would go out and make known to the world. And this is corroborated by the fact that Jesus said the same thing to them all later on when teaching them how to deal with a trespassing brother. ‘Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’ (Matt. 18:18) 

Oh my fellow believers, Jesus is depending on us to build the church. He is the rock or solid foundation on which we are to build. It’s all based on Peter’s confession, that Jesus is indeed ‘the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And His promise that the ‘gates of hell shall not prevail against it,’ ensures us that death and evil will not permanently overpower the Church. But to accomplish His wish, means we have to go out and continue what the disciples begun; to spread His word, His doctrine, His wonderful philosophy. In other words, carry out the Great Commission which He assigned to His church, to His followers right down through the ages, until whatever time He returns. 

And we all know what the Great Commission is, but just to refresh our memory, (smile) let’s proclaim it again nuh. Jesus instructs the disciples. ‘All power (authority) is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach (make disciples of) all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.’ (Matt. 28:18-20) 

And it’s obvious that as the body of Christ, His church, we have sadly fallen down on carrying out that commission, otherwise the world would not be in the sad and sorry, evil and ungodly state its currently in. And we’ll close today with a couple of definitions and explanations by the scholars of the church and the Great Commission. As per the church, they say: ‘The word church is a translation of the Greek word ekklesia, meaning “called out” or “assembly.” In the New Testament it usually refers to a local group of Christians. 

In this sense a church is an assembly of baptized believers under the discipline of the Word of God. They are organized to carry out the Great Commission, the administration of New Testament ordinances, and the exercise of spiritual gifts. When a group of Christians today follows this example, it is a church in the biblical sense of the word. In the New Testament, Christians assembled as churches for fellowship, instruction, and worship, and to carry out the Great Commission. Every Christian should follow the example of New Testament believers by identifying with a local church, and getting involved in its ministry.’  That tells us we can’t be true believers unless we are associated with a local church and are involved in its ministry. 

And as per the Great Commission, the scholars say: ‘The controlling purpose of the local church is to make disciples of all kinds of people. Those who are evangelized and converted should then be baptized, attesting to their identification with Christ and the local body of believers. The final phase of the Great Commission is to train disciples in Christian knowledge and for effective service. A church cannot choose one aspect of its responsibility and neglect the others. The Great Commission is a simple command with three steps – evangelism, baptism, and education. Every Christian should determine that his ministry for Christ in the church upholds God’s objective for that institution.’ 

And now that we are more enlightened as to the purpose of the church and the Great Commission, (smile)  let’s spend some time today pondering if we, and the local church we belong to are indeed following the ideals noted above. And if not, let’s do our best to bring them into line. Much LOVE!

Proverbs 16:9.      A man’s heart deviseth (plans) his way, but the Lord directeth his steps.

Well, it’s another cloudy start to this first Friday in May, but nonetheless, the shouts of ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday and the weekend is here at last!’ have gone out all around the world. I guess we don’t really care what kind of day Friday is, once it’s Friday, and the weekend looms large ahead. The trouble is that too many of us are more taken up with what the world has to offer for the weekend and not what Almighty God has in store. But then again, that’s why our world is in such a mess, such an evil, ungodly mess. If you blatantly and continually ignore the Creator and Controller of the universe you must end up with serious problems. 

Remember that the best laid plans of mice and men go astray, if they are not in sync with the will and word of God. And then there’s the Yiddish saying, ‘Man plans, but God laughs.’ And it’s all a fact, for as Cousin Sol says in Proverbs 16: ‘The preparations (plans) of the heart in man (belong to man), and the answer of the tongue, is of the Lord.’ (Prov. 16:1) In other words, as the scholars say: ‘The Lord is sovereign, even over a man’s thoughts and words.’ Now we should certainly think on that before making our grandiose plans for the weekend, or anytime really. 

And Cousin Sol further spells it out later in the chapter. ‘A man’s heart deviseth (plans) his way, but the Lord directeth his steps.’  (Prov. 16:9) And that’s oh so true friends! How many times have we planned to do something only to find ourselves doing something else, and we’re not sure why? That’s because the Lord guided us to the other thing. That makes the scholars to opine that: ‘The Lord is sovereign over man’s scheming and planning.’ And I don’t know why it’s so difficult for us to wake up and see the futility of trying to plan our own lives right down to the nitty gritty, when the Lord has His own plan for each and every life that He’s created. 

And if you still don’t believe me, then listen to Cousin Sol as he gives forth on the subject again, (smile) this time from Proverbs 19. He wisely expounds: ‘There are many devices (plans) in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.’ (Prov. 19:21) And it’s not like we haven’t seen it proven over and over in our lives. If the Lord desires to thwart our plans, He has the right and the power to do it. We just have to ‘wisen’ up, realize it and try to walk in His will rather than ours. 

Now, I guess Cousin Sol found the subject rather interesting and/or important that in another chapter of Proverbs, he once again broached the topic. Listen here: ‘Man’s goings (steps) are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?’ (Prov. 20:24) And if the first part is true, then the second part is totally logical, since you cannot understand where you’re going, if you don’t control where you’re going. (smile). And I don’t know what it will take for some of us to finally figure that out and stop trying to force our plans over those that God has set out for us. 

Friends, turning to God and asking for His will for our lives, or even bringing what we desire to do before Him before we try to initiate them is wisdom of the ages! Because if He definitely doesn’t want us going one way, He will not allow us to go there. Since He’s given us free will, He doesn’t like to get into our affairs too much, but sometimes what we’re doing is either so dangerous, outrageous or will cause so much confusion, that He intercedes and puts a spoke in our wheel. And that’s only because He LOVES us so much, He doesn’t want to see us make mistakes that are either irreparable or will cause us much heartache later on. 

And Isaiah spells it out for us in even greater detail as he speaks of God’s Spoken and Purposed Will. ‘Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me. Declaring (yesss!!!) the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:’ (Is. 46:9-10) Oh my faithful believers, I don’t see how God could make it any plainer than that nuh! His counsel and plans are what will stand. He will do as He pleases, because it’s His universe, and contrary to what we might think, He still controls it. 

And Bruh David concurs with all that Cousin Sol and Isaiah say, when he proclaims in Psalm 37: ‘The steps of a good man are ordered (established) by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.’ (Ps, 37:23-24) Wow! What good news that is my brethren! When we walk with God, even if we stumble and fall, we will not be totally cast down, because the Lord will raise us back up again. And Cousin Sol further elaborates on that by saying: ‘For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief (stumble into calamity).’ (Prov. 24:16) 

And that’s the gospel truth! A righteous man will never give up, regardless of how often he falls, for the Lord will always help him to rise again to his feet. Now let’s hear the end of this thing, (smile) as per the psalmist in Psalm 33. ‘Let all the earth fear the Lord (reverence Him): let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. for he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen (unbelievers) to nought: he maketh the devices (plans) of the people of none effect. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.’ (Ps. 33:8-11) 

Now friends, with all of the wonderful, enlightening scripture percolating in our hearts, minds, bodies and souls, (smile) let’s go to God, through our Friday Chant, to find succour for our earthly problems. As one voice: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through this past week. You know it’s been rough… what with all the confusion and anxiety caused by the pandemic and our many other serious problems. We can’t fix them on our own Lord, so we desperately need your help. 

Oh heavenly Father, with your omnipotent help, and our trusting faith, we know that we can stand strong and steadfast and defeat the simmering unrest in our land. So Lord, we sincerely ask you today to give those involved in the forefront of this serious and unexpected storm, the wise guidance to handle the situation properly, without further serious setbacks. And please help those of us who must go out to work amidst all the confusion, to be responsible and to stay safe. 

And Lord, we fervently pray that You’ll use this situation to return backsliders to your fold, show them the error of their ways. And please introduce a new flock of believers, who will embrace your LOVE and compassion by the example, we, your faithful believers set. Yes Lord, please use this pandemic, the bubbling discontent and dissatisfaction in our land, as a means of restoring faith in You, so that our sinful world can wake up and smell the coffee, wake up and smell it sweet and strong! We pray this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen!’ 

Now, if we sincerely want to see positive changes in our world, then we need to make the necessary changes in our lives that will encourage God to help us. It’s as simple as that. Much LOVE!
