Today’s Scrip-Bit 25 January 2011 Ephesians 4:28‏

Ephesians 4:28.    Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Oh Friends, my area is a virtual blanket of white! Unsullied by humans, the snow looks beautiful. But like many other beautiful things, its appearance is very deceptive; it’s cold as hell! (smile) Obviously that sounds like a contradiction of terms, but for some unknown reason, many of us use that analogy. I guess we mean that it’s an exceedingly abnormal temperature, like that associated with Lucifer’s lair. But be it known to all and sundry, whatever term you choose to use, my neck of the woods is brrrr… beastly cold! And for all you fortunate ones in the warm, sunny climes, please pay particular attention to the fact that in these northern parts, neither rain, sleet, cold nor snow is an excuse for not going to work. One is expected to go out and labour despite the severity of the elements. It’s certainly not like in the sunny southlands, where as soon as the clouds darken, or a little drizzle begins, we claim it’s raining and can’t go to work. Hn! Up here, you’d lose that job. But that just shows the different attitudes to work that are prevalent in different countries. So all you folks from down south who desire so badly to come or go ‘a foreign,’ please note that the southern attitude to work, won’t cut it in the north countries. But a healthy work attitude is one of the main reasons why some countries are prosperous, while others are not. And it’s not even a matter of working extra or real hard, but more about working consistently and efficiently. Unfortunately though, in these modern times, even in these northern climes, the work ethic needed to attain and retain prosperity is being eroded, it’s dying a slow and painful death. That’s why so many supposed first world countries are in decline, while some supposed third world countries are prospering. I guess it’s just the nature of the human animal, which seems cyclical: first work hard and become prosperous, then relax, get idle and lazy, wrongly thinking that your wealth is self reproducing and thus everlasting, then finding out it’s not, and consequently sinking right back down into the mire of poverty. Now let’s check out our Bit: ‘Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.’ Oh Friends, our Bit indicates that work serves at least a threefold purpose in our lives. It stops us from doing wrong, puts our time to good use in a legal, moral and godly activity, while also enabling us to have enough earthly substance so that we can share with the less fortunate. And my people, what a wonderful experience it is, having enough to share with others! It is the basic element of our Christian faith; helping others through giving and sharing. That’s what Jesus was all about when He sojourned on earth! And Bruh Paul certainly put it in the right perspective the last time he addressed the Ephesian elders in person. ‘And now brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto (provided for) my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have showed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than receive.’ (Acts 20:32-35) John the Baptist also preached the great value of sharing when he thundered forth out of the wilderness, scourging the people with his strong words on repentance and righteousness, warning them ‘to bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance… And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. And the people asked him saying, what shall we do then? He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats (tunics), let him impart (give) to him that hath none; and he that hath meat (food), let him do likewise. Then came also publicans (tax collectors) to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact (collect) no more than that which is appointed you. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man (intimidate or shake down for money), neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.’ (Luke 3:8-14) Yes my people, to build a true Christian society, one worthy of Jesus’ name, certain elements must proliferate in it, namely; a strong work ethic, basic honesty, a genuine desire to share with the less fortunate and general contentment with one’s life, all encompassed by a true LOVE for God and sincere obedience to His Word. That’s the only prescription for a sustained successful society my brethren! And we all know that our society these days is definitely not a reflection of those principles. So, since we believe that a godly society is what we need, and what we will have, then let’s go out, each of us, and in our own small, individual way, try and implement some of the changes we so badly need nuh. Remember Jesus’ parting words to His disciples, of which we are the current crop: ‘Go ye therefore, and teach (make disciples of) all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.’ (Matt.28:19-20) Yes Friends, let’s get up off our too fat fannies and busy ourselves with Jesus’ work as we ought to, for no godly changes will be made in this evil and cruel world unless we believers cause them. Much LOVE!…Jesus left His earthly work in our hands…what would His current evaluation be of our progress…most likely…not good enough…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 24 January 2011 Ephesians 4:28‏

Ephesians 4:28.    Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Oh Friends, the dark shadows lighten as the minutes slowly tick down towards the dawn in the Western world. Then suddenly a cacophony of sounds fill the air; music blares, clocks jangle, phones ring or vibrate and a harsh storm of resentment, anger and surly invective is unleashed in numerous darkened bedrooms. Why? Simply because it’s Monday. Those disturbances herald the death knell of the no work, relaxing, fun-time weekend, with most able-bodied, employed citizens now expected to get up and get ready to embrace another week of mundane, often frustrating and repetitious labour. Unfortunately that’s the foundation on which our prosperous society is built, for as Bruh Paul declared to the Ephesians in our Bit eons ago: ‘Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.’  And that is the motto we still live by today, though the human flesh naturally gravitates to and enjoys laziness and luxury, while thoroughly demonizing work. But thankfully, we believers don’t have to behave in such a fleshly manner, for the Holy Spirit of Jesus resides in us and guides us to a more spiritual, godly reaction. And so to chase away those woeful Monday morning blues, let’s all sing our Monday Morning Battle Hymn with much verve and vigour. ‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! We, your humble servants, praise your Holy Name and thank you that this Monday morning we have jobs to go to; jobs we don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose here on earth; keeping lives and families together. We also thank you Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm you’ve wrought in our weary souls over the last two days. It’s that rejuvenation of Spirit which allows us now to sally forth with confidence into the evil, ungodly world that surrounds us, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s wicked taunts, wiles and lies. But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing your powerful, protective spiritual armour. We surrender our all to you, and humbly ask that you let your aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit, lead and guide all your servants as we go out to meet the enemy in battle. Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, and thereby further your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy Name of your Son, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. AMEN!’ Now let’s go out there and make that dream come true my people! Ah Friends, it’s so spiritually rich to be a believer! And our Bit today comes from the section of the Ephesians’ letter where Bruh Paul tells them about some of the good changes they ought to pursue as they embrace the new life in Christ. Things like changing their conversations from the old, lustful, deceitful, corrupt style, renewing the spirit of their minds, putting on the new man created after God in righteousness, refraining from lying and speaking truth to all men, not allowing anger to make them sin, neither going to bed angry, nor giving place to the devil, to stop stealing and work honestly, etc. (Eph.4:14-32) It’s obvious that Bruh Paul had serious concerns and misgivings about believers not working, for here is his exhortation to the Thessalonians on the subject. ‘Now we command you brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought (free of charge); but wrought with labour and travail (worked) night and day, that we might not be chargeable (a burden) to any of you. Not because we have not power (authority), but to make ourselves an example unto you to follow us. For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye brethren, be not weary in well doing. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish (warn) him as a brother. Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.’  (2 Thess.3:6-16) And all I can add to that Friends is a big ‘Amen!’ because that negative behaviour still exists in our society today. However, Bruh Paul has shown us a godly way to deal with it, so please, let’s try and practice it nuh, it can only work for the good of the entire society. More tomorrow on this, God willing. Till then, the grace of God be with you. Much LOVE!…even a child is known by his doings…whether his work is pure…and whether it be right… (Prov.20:11)

Today’s Scrip-Bit 23 January 2011 Psalm 5:5‏

Psalm 5:5.    The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

Oh my beautiful Friends in Christ, I hope this missive finds you all in good health and spirits this Sunday morning. But if it doesn’t, then let me offer heartfelt prayers on the health side of your problem, and proclaim that by the time you’re finished reading this, your spirits will have soared right to heaven on high! (smile) Ah Friends, the ole fella’s feeling a bit chilly in the flesh and bones department himself, although I am in warm confines, and thus I’m forced to cry out for the umpteenth time: ‘How long O Lord, how long before you answer my aching plea for saltwater and sunshine?’ However, the answer is the same as always: ‘In good time my child, in good time.’ But fortunately, though my flesh is cold and disappointed, my spirit is in fine form, especially now that I’ve asked the Most High to lead and guide me in writing this Bit. And I saw an interesting quote today that I must share, particularly with my fellow sojourners in the cold climes. Pietro Aretino has this advice for us: ‘Let us LOVE winter, for it is the spring of genius.’ Hn! Good for Pietro yes! Theoretically speaking, he might have a point, because after the cold, dreary, dead time of winter, with the arrival of spring, everything suddenly returns to a life full of colour and splendour. So reminiscent of Jesus’ death and resurrection: one day He lies dead and lifeless in a cold stone tomb, but the next He is arisen, full of new life and eternal glory! And all God’s people shouted an appreciative, ‘Glory Hallelujah!’ Now any other year Pietro might have talked me into LOVING winter, but definitely not this one, which uncharacteristically has me singing the winter blahs, not to mention the extremely cold spell we’re currently experiencing. Most of the readers in the winter areas will think Pietro mad, or at least having one card less than a full pack. Unlike Bruh David, who, in the psalm from which our Bit is taken is pleading for protection from Almighty God against evildoers. ‘Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my meditation (groaning). Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee and will look up. For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell (sojourn) with thee. The foolish (boastful) shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.’ (Ps.5:1-5) And isn’t that the gospel truth my people! The Lord cannot abide sin, or those who take pleasure in it. As Bruh David continues: ‘Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing (falsehood): the Lord will abhor the bloody (bloodthirsty) and deceitful man.’ (Ps.5:6) Yes Friends, that’s the kind of God we worship. But then we also have the prophet Habakkuk’s query: ‘Thou art purer of eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity (wickedness): wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?’ (Hab.1:13) Ah my brethren, that is a question many of us ask today too as the wicked suppress, oppress and persecute the righteous for no just cause. Beelzebub’s cronies are currently having a field day amongst the righteous, with little or no sign of any ease in the situation. But as believers, we have to abide by the Lord’s Word that the righteous will be blessed and the wicked receive their full comeuppance eventually. As the psalmist says of the righteous in Psalm 1: ‘And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.’ (Ps.1:3-6) The road is indeed rough my people, but we believe in the omnipotent, faithful and true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who promised to never leave or forsake us, thus we have to suffer whatever comes our way with His promises in mind. Remember Jesus didn’t have it easy here on earth either, and He constantly looked to the Father for help and guidance, but when the time of reckoning came, His crucifixion, He obediently bowed to the Father’s will. ‘O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.’ (Matt.26:39) Yes Friends, that’s the same obedient attitude we need to adopt and display even when times are rough for no good reason. If Jesus could do it, under much heavier stress and strain than we’ll ever encounter, then so can we. It’s what our faith is all about: Jesus dying to redeem us, to give us salvation and eternal life, if only we believe. Note, that’s the only criterion we need: belief in Him; that He is who He says He is, and has done the things He’s done, and will do those He promised to do in the future. Nothing else really matters when we have that awesome truth indelibly written in our hearts, minds and souls. Though life comes hard against us, we ought to let nothing shake our belief in Jesus, for He is undoubtedly the Way, the Truth and the Life, and if we stand strong and steadfast in that knowledge, then we will be fine, we will overcome. Lucifer and his iniquity workers won’t conquer our spirits, for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will impart the necessary strength to us through His Holy Spirit, which is stronger and wiser than anything the powers of darkness can throw at us. In conclusion Friends, let’s keep looking on the bright side, the side that believes Jesus when He says: ‘I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.’ (John 10:10) So stand strong my people, walk obediently before the Lord and He will surely make your paths straight. Much LOVE!…only believe…all things are possible…only believe…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 22 January 2011 Proverbs 29:25‏

Proverbs 29:25.     The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Oh Friends, I had planned to finish this Bit yesterday, but the Hoy Spirit voted against it. I guess He wanted me to clear up a couple of loose ends; namely what happened to Abraham and Isaac after their deceptions were uncovered. Remember God called Abraham a prophet when talking of him to Abimelech: ‘…for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live.’ (Gen.20:7) Now, considering the circumstances, that was simply amazing Friends! And in restoring Sarah to Abraham, Abimelech also gave him numerous animals and servants, plus ‘a thousand pieces of silver,’ though the scholars claim that ‘pieces’ is inaccurate, since there were no coins at that time and everything was weighed, but it nonetheless showed his high esteem for Abraham and Sarah. ‘So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. For the Lord had fast closed up the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.’ (Gen.20:17-18) And who says our God doesn’t move in mysterious ways eh? For though Abraham was the wrongdoer, the Lord closed up the wombs of Abimelech’s women while Sarah dwelt in his household, and only reopened them after she was reunited untouched with Abraham. As for Isaac, Abimelech sternly rebuked him after he confessed his deception: ‘What is this thou hast done unto us? One of the people might lightly (soon) have laid with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.’ (Gen.26:10-11) More protection for His anointed one Friends, although Isaac was the original culprit. But what’s really interesting and amazing is that Abraham, after his two deceptions over Sarah, and Isaac after his over Rebekah, both increased very much in material wealth. We already know Abraham’s good fortune, now listen to the Good Book tell of Isaac’s: ‘Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received (reaped) in the same year a hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him. And the man waxed (grew) great, and went forward (continued prospering) until he became very great. For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and a great store (number) of servants: and the Philistines envied him.’ (Gen.26:12-14) Oh people, only a magnanimous, forgiving and LOVING God, who otherwise had big plans for those two followers, could have turned their mistakes into positions of higher esteem and greater earthly fortunes. That doesn’t mean though, that we can all expect more esteem and wealth when we make unwise decisions. (smile) The Lord had a purpose, a plan based on those two individuals, and if He had left them to their own devices, they would just have ruined it for themselves and all of us who came after them. It’s highly likely He would do it again today if one of His chosen was endangering an important plan through his fleshly lust and fear. However Friends, that’s not something we ought to count on, or take for granted because every situation is different, and the general process is that we will reap exactly what we sow. In Bruh Paul’s esteemed words to the Galatians: ‘Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.’ (Gal.6:7-8) And I’d like to end with some tried and true words from the story ‘The Seed’ that we recently spoke of. They just give us an idea of the bountiful and godly plants we will reap if we sow certain good seeds. ‘If you plant honesty, you will reap trust. If you plant goodness, you will reap friends. If you plant humility, you will reap greatness. If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment. If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective. If you plant hard work, you will reap success. If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation. If you plant faith in Christ, you will reap a harvest. So be careful what you plant now, it will determine what you will reap later.’ Oh Friends, let’s go out now and sow as many of those good seeds as possible, so that we will reap a godly harvest later and thus further Jesus’ kingdom, as He greatly desires of us. Much LOVE!…we are the grass that will wither and die…but the incorruptible seed of God’s Word will live forever…sow it daily into the life of your family… (1 Pet.1:23-25)

Today’s Scrip-Bit 21 January 2011 Proverbs 29:25‏

Proverbs 29:25.    The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Glad tidings mih people, it’s Friday! Consequently many of us are high-fiving each other and joyfully mouthing ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!’ But please remember that it’s not all peaches and cream on the weekend, for we often have to straighten out stuff from the past week and also plan for the upcoming one. However, our Friday Chant is here to boost us, to get us into the groove for the weekend. So let’s all chant with one accord. ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through another week of work! It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through. Now, please help me to get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that I can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out and do it all over again next week, furthering your glorious kingdom with each step I take. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.’ And the only way to make that come true is by patterning our lives after our Bit: ‘The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe (secure, exalted).’ Yes Friends, our lives can never blossom the way they ought to unless we place our entire trust in the Lord God Almighty, and not be overly afraid of what man can do to us. Granted, they may kill the body, but never the soul! Now we’ve seen Abraham make two disastrous mistakes because of his fear of powerful men by saying that Sarah, his wife, was his sister. Here is the basis for his declaration, as told to King Abimelech: ‘And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. And it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.’ (Gen.20:12-13) Yes, Sarah was indeed Abraham’s sister on his father’s side, but also his wife, which took preference in the Lord’s eyes. And so it is that today many of us still practice those half-truths and prevarications, according to which part of the story best fits our particular purpose. But my brethren, just like in Abraham’s case, those in-between declarations usually come back to haunt to us, boomerang back in a negative manner. So please, let’s be on the up and up nuh, for if we insist on doing such actions, the Lord won’t always bail us out. And besides, if our faith and trust in God is strong and steadfast, then there’s no need to play those foolish and often dangerous games. Oh Friends, one of the most important things we can ever do in this life is to learn from the mistakes of others, especially our parents. I use to drum that into my children’s head, hopefully they’ve learnt it. Unfortunately though, Abraham’s son, Isaac, did not learn from his father’s errors, for when another famine hit his land, the Lord told him not to go down to Egypt, and he also went to live in Gerar. ‘And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon (beautiful).’ (Gen.26:7) Can you believe it people? He did the same nonsense like his father! But as the old people always said, ‘whatever is done in darkness will eventually come to light.’ And so it did, although Isaac apparently got away with it longer than his father. Hear the Good Book: ‘And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with (caressing) Rebekah his wife. And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety (obviously) she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for (on account of) her.’ (Gen.26:8-9) Ah Lord eh! Isaac used the same foolish reasoning as his father, although they both supposedly espoused this great faith and trust in the Lord God Almighty. Now Friends, please don’t laugh or judge either of them harshly. In the first place, they didn’t have all the knowledge, resources, wisdom and wonders of God that we have today. They were just getting set in the faith, so therefore the fear of powerful men was still understandably strong. Moreover, today, when we know all about God and His wonderful attributes, we still bow and scrape, lie and tell half-truths to powerful men because of what they can do to us. And it’s a very serious matter Friends, for as I said yesterday, if we don’t practice the faith we preach, then that faith is useless. It all goes right back to walking our talk, which unfortunately we’re not very good at. Oh my people, living our faith is the best thing Christians can ever do, and likewise, not living it, is the worst mistake a believer can make. Too often we make claims in God’s name, then don’t live up to them in our own lives. Please, I implore us to cease and desist from that ungodly, untrustworthy kind of behaviour, for we might not be as lucky as Abraham and Isaac. More on this tomorrow, God in favour. Till then, go safely with God. Much LOVE!…our basic responsibility here on earth, is to…LOVE our God…SPREAD His Word…LIVE our Faith… P.S. Oh Friends, my favourite gospel soca just came on on Wack 90.1. ‘Try Jesus!’ A nice piece of synco-soca. ‘ Try Jesus…He’s always around. Try Jesus…He’ll never let you down. Try Jesus…He’s such a wonderful Friend. Try Jesus…Well I know your heart He can mend. Try Jesus…He’s always there for you. Try Jesus…He’ll always see you through. Try Jesus…I know I’ll never regret it. Cause Jesus never failed me yet. Try Jesus…Yes Friends…Please Try Jesus…You won’t regret it…Try Jesus…’ Much LOVE!

Today’s Scrip-Bit 20 January 2011 Proverbs 29:25‏

Proverbs 29:25.    The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Oh Friends, every day the Lord shows me some new working of His mysterious ways. Today it was discovering some copies of a story in my study. I believe I made them some time ago to give to my children, but never did. Sorry children. (smile) However, when I read the story, entitled ‘The Seed,’ I was blown away, since it dealt with the very topic we’re currently talking about; not trusting or being afraid of man, which leads us to deceptive practices, but instead, wisely putting our trust and faith in the Lord God Almighty. Anyway, the gist of ‘The Seed,’ is that a Christian businessman wants to retire and decides to appoint a new C.E.O in an abnormal manner. Consequently, one day he calls all the young executives into the board room and gives them each a seed, telling them to plant and nourish it and return in a year with what they had grown. As luck would have it, this guy named Jim, just can’t get his seed to grow despite serious efforts of watering and fertilizing. Then the big day comes and all the young execs file into the boardroom with their lush plants. Jim is the only one with an empty pot. He has thought of going awol, but his sensible wife encourages him to go and tell the truth of his situation. But now, seeing all the lush flora on the floor beside his empty pot, and with his coworkers either laughing at or pitying him, he seriously regrets coming. Then the boss comes in and admires all the beautiful plants, but he also sees Jim cowering at the back of the group and orders him brought to the front. Imagine poor Jim’s consternation nuh? He feels like a failure, and figures the boss senses it too. The boss asks him what happened, why the empty pot, and Jim truthfully explains his tragic luck. But then, as in all God’s works, a strange thing occurs. The boss tells the other execs to sit down, then proudly announces Jim as the company’s next C.E.O. Wow! Why, you ask? Because he had given them all boiled, dead seeds, which couldn’t grow, but when they realized that, all of them, except Jim, went out and bought good seeds. And the moral of the story? Courage, truth and honesty will get you places that deception and dishonesty never will! Oh Friends, how I wish that even a small portion of our world would act that way these days, for greed corruption and dishonesty is so rampant that courage, truth and honesty are now more the exception than the rule. And the sad part is that many of us don’t learn from our negative experiences. Ah Lord eh! How many times must we declare that: ‘The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe (secure, set on high).’ And would you believe that our spiritual father Abraham was one of those who didn’t learn from the error of his ways? Yes Friends, after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham went to live in Gerar, an ancient trading post halfway between Beer-Sheba and Gaza on the Mediterranean coast, and he again claimed that Sarah was merely his sister. (Gen.20:2) The king, Abimelech, thus seeing a beautiful single woman took her into his house. But again, the great God we worship, intervenes on Abraham’s behalf. He appears to Abimelech in a dream at night: ‘Behold thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife. But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity (innocence) of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine.’ (Gen.20:3-7) Ah mih people, yuh see the sticky situations we put God in, forcing Him to bail us out so that we don’t bring embarrassment and disrepute to His cause. Now a scared Abimelech gets up early in the morning and tells his servants the bad news and they too become quite afraid. Then he calls the scallywag Abraham and asks: ‘What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee (how have I sinned against you), that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done…What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake (on account of my wife).’ (Gen:20:9-11) Oh Friends, that’s our problem in a nutshell; we simply think too much! Instead of leaving the thinking to Almighty God and following His lead and direction as believers ought to, we get the fear of man into us and end up doing foolish things. And one would think that after the fiasco his deception caused in Egypt, Abraham would smarten up and not do it again. That just goes to show the weakness of our flesh and our sub-par intelligence when fear of mortal man takes hold of us. Oh my people, let’s not only talk about trusting God nuh, let’s actually show and practice that trust. It’s wise and normal to consider the possibility of being harmed by man, but our faith dictates that we should first query the Lord and ask for His wise guidance before setting out on a fearful path of our own. If we don’t do that, then our faith is worthless. More tomorrow on this topic, God willing. Till then let’s place our absolute trust in Him and allow Him to safely guide us. Much LOVE!…if you plant honesty…you will reap trust…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 19 January 2011 Proverbs 29:25‏

Proverbs 29:25.    The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

Oh Friends, it’s another day in the life! Wow! A life though, which many of us consider boring, routine, humdrum and same-old, same-old. Now to a certain extent all those descriptions are true, because life in general consists of the same day-to-day things and acts. In this modern, fast paced society, we get up in the mornings, rush out to work, baby sitters or school, spend most of the day involved in activities we consider uninteresting, then we crawl back home, pick up the children, do the housework and/or homework, go to bed, get some fitful sleep, then it’s time to get up and do the same thing over again. Oh, how our lustful flesh craves excitement and interesting stuff! And thus we’re titillated through the all-pervasive media by the supposed glamour of those we call celebrities in today’s evil, ungodly world. But if you look closely, you’ll discover that many of those who appear to live this glamorous existence are always in some sort of trouble; either with the law, their families, or outside relationships. Unfortunately, their lives never seem to run as smoothly as we’d expect, given all their earthly wealth and power. So though their lives appear exciting from our lowly perspective, that same excitement causes them more problems than our boring, mundane existence. Oh I know that many of us will still opt for that lifestyle, but I do have some good news for us. My brethren, there is one way to always have a full and interesting life, plus safety and security, and it’s so simple that most of us tend to ignore it. And what’s that wonderful, interesting way of life, I hear you plead? Well, as the song says, simply, ‘Try Jesus!’ Yes Friends, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the Life, the Light, and a host of other things too numerous to mention. And why try Jesus? Again it’s a simple answer: because He’s never failed us yet. And all God’s people shouted a loud, ‘Amen!’ My Friends, we’re all aware of that truth, but because it doesn’t fit into the world’s lustful, idol worshipping agenda, it’s discredited, and tends to make us think that Jesus is boring and out of date. But that’s totally untrue my brethren, for Jesus is every bit as up to date, and even more interesting than the empty, sinful practices of our ungodly world. And our Bit bears that out quite well. ‘The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe (secure, set on high.)’ And that’s no lie! Yes people, whenever we trust in, fear and reverence mankind too much, we end up getting in trouble. However. when we trust in, fear, reverence and surrender our souls and lives to Jesus, we don’t fall into any traps or pits. And we have excellent examples from the Good Book. The first goes way back when to our spiritual father, Abraham. At one stage in his younger days, still known as Abram, a disastrous famine hit his homeland, so he and his wife Sarai set out for Egypt to seek a better life. But just before entering Egypt, he said to Sarai: ‘Behold now, I know that thou art a fair (beautiful) woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.’ (Gen;12:11-13) And what happens? All the powers in Egypt admire Sarai’s beauty and she ends up in Pharaoh’s house, and Abram receives an enormous dowry with numerous animals and servants. But unfortunately for Abram, ‘the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.’ (Gen.12:17-20) Oh Friends, whenever we set out to deceive because of some fear, doubt or anxiety, we always end up regretting it at some future stage. Thus Abram’s fear of strangers abducting his beautiful wife and killing him, led him to a foolish, deceptive act, which hurt him more in the long run, for though he amassed some earthly wealth from the deception, he was run out of Egypt back to the famine land. Was the deception worth it? I don’t think so. Anyway, the Lord obviously had His eyes on Abram, had greater things in store for him and Sarai, and therefore did not allow the deception to work for long. It’s the same way the Lord has His eyes on some of us today, and will not allow us to succeed in any deceptive schemes. Looking back on my life now, I can pin point a couple of my own deceptive schemes which eventually fell through, but if they had succeeded, I certainly would not be writing now about Jesus and His safe, secure and exalting attributes. Thanks be to God! Ah mih people, such are the vicissitudes of life! More tomorrow on this topic, God desirous, but we’ll close with the 9th and last of our New Year’s ponderings: ‘This year, I will share the good news of God’s great grace.’ Oh Friends, what a beautiful way to end our Bit! Now let’s all go out and participate in that most worthwhile and honourable endeavour. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen! Much LOVE!…be not deceived…God is not mocked…for whatsoever a man soweth…that also shall he reap… (Gal.6:7)

Today’s Scrip-Bit 18 January 2011 Psalm 25:4‏

Psalm 25:4.    Show me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.

Oh Friends, life is certainly strange yes! If you’re like me, you have a lot of positive stuff on your desk, the office walls and even the file cabinet; things you put there to encourage and help you rise up when times get rough. However, after a short period, you stop noticing most of them. In keeping with this state of affairs, there’s a little card on my desk that I haven’t paid any attention to for some time. But as the Lord would have it, as I sat there this morning contemplating an intro, my eyes fell on it and I read it. Surprisingly, it was a prayer in the same vein and image of our Bit; one also asking for guidance and direction. Allow me to share it. It’s simple and straightforward, as all prayer ought to be. ‘Sustain us, O Lord, with your Holy Spirit. Give us an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to LOVE you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.’ Yes Friends, that’s the kind of general prayer we ought to offer up to God, not a set of highfalutin words and phrases, for we don’t get extra marks or blessings depending on style and vocabulary. The words have to come sincerely from our hearts and souls. And in that respect, nobody did it better than Bruh David. Oh yes, he could certainly wax oratorical and otherwise when necessary, but in general his pleas were simple and heartfelt, and today we’re going to concentrate on some of those, beginning with our Bit. ‘Show me they ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.’ Simple words my brethren, but strung together in an endearing and searching plea. Now listen to this one: ‘Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.’ (Ps.5:8) Then there’s this: ‘Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain (smooth) path, because of mine enemies.’ (Ps.27:11) And here is another simple entreaty; ‘Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name (give me singleness of heart to have reverential awe for you).’ (Ps.86:11) Oh my people, what a simple, but heart-warming prayer! Bruh David was always asking for God’s guidance, for teaching, for direction, so that he could walk worthy of Him, live up to His standard of excellence. That’s the way we believers ought also to be, not merely concerned about asking for things and possessions, but for a heart full of desire to know and please our wonderful and generous God, the LOVING Father who sacrificed His Son Jesus so that we could be redeemed and reconciled to His Holiness. Therefore, the most grateful act we can ever show is a sincere and deep desire to know Him, His ways, His statutes, His commandments, and then to walk faithfully in them. That’s why the Lord could consider Bruh David to be a man after His own heart, despite his serious wrongdoings. He always tried to hold the Lord’s righteous ways before him, and when he made mistakes, was fairly quick to own up to them and ask for forgiveness. Hear how the psalmist puts it in Psalm 119: ‘I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes. Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk (meditate on) thy wondrous works.’ (Ps.119:26-27) As far as I’m concerned, believers should be both meditating on, and talking about God’s works, because in all aspects they are absolutely wonderful. And we’re talking here about their might and majesty, their grace and mercy, their forgiveness and LOVING-kindness, their faithfulness and justice… Oh Friends, we can talk about the wondrous works of our God until the end of time and still not cover them all, so plentiful are they! Now here’s Bruh David once more in full cry: ‘Cause me to hear thy LOVING-kindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee… Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.’ (Ps.143:8,10) Yes my people, we need to be seeking our God constantly, always asking for His input, His wise guidance and direction for our foolish and sinful earthly lives. That’s the only way to live the life of a true believer, a true follower of Christ! And we’ll close today with the 8th instalment of our New Year’s ponderings: ‘This year I will eat when I’m hungry and stop eating at the first sign of fullness. I will lean into life and be excellent.’ Wow! Friends, we couldn’t end with a better heartfelt intention! Much LOVE!…if thou seek the Lord thy God…thou shalt find Him…if thou seek Him…with all thy heart and with all thy soul… (Deut.4:29) P.S. Oh Friends, as I’m editing this, I’m listening to a sweet piece of gospel soca from WACK 90.1 on the net. Who say we doh make nice gospel soca eh! And as the singer is saying: God is LOVE. He is real as He could be. Hold on to Him…Doh ever let go…. Remember…God is LOVE…God is LOVE…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 17 January 2011 Psalm 25:4‏

Psalm 25:4.    Show me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.

Well hello there my wonderful Friends in Christ! It’s Monday morning! And I hear the groans and moans because that means it’s time to get up and get with the programme. (smile) So let’s start off on the right foot by generating some positive energy into our tired, listless souls by singing our Monday Morning Battle Hymn in full voice. All together now: ‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! AMEN!’ Oh Friends, we’ve just done what Bruh David declared in our Bit; we’ve asked for guidance and protection! ‘Show me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.’ (Ps.25:4-5) Yes my people, our day should always be structured around the wishes and desires of our God. Having asked for guidance and direction, then we ought to listen carefully for answers which come through the workings of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. Now note that those answers aren’t always loud and direct, but oftimes can be just a still, small voice deep down in our souls saying, ‘Yes or no; do that, or don’t do it.’ But if we have been consistent with God, there will always be an answer. It’s our duty to listen for it. And Bruh David wasn’t the only man of faith who pleaded with the Lord for guidance. We find it as far back as Moses, when the Lord drafted him to lead His chosen people out of bondage in Egypt. Moses was complaining about his lack of help for that brutal task. ‘And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, show me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.’ (Ex.33:12-14) So my brethren, even Moses who turned out to be a man of great faith and a great leader had doubts and called on the Lord to help him get rid of them. That answer didn’t even truly satisfy Moses and he persisted, until the Lord decided to show him His back, for anyone who saw His face would die. (Ex.33:15-23) So please don’t be afraid or ashamed to call on the Lord in your time of doubt or uncertainty, for that’s all a part of His Fatherly responsibility, and He delights in been called on, for even the smallest, nitty gritty thing. Oh Friends, our calling on God pleases Him immensely, because it shows that we’re truly desirous of a personal relationship with Him. However, there is one addendum to that; we must contact Him on a regular, if not constant basis, not only when we have problems, but also when times are good. For our relationship with Almighty God to work, there must be one on one, continual, ongoing dialogue between both parties, the same way successful human relationships are built. That way ensures us of a continuous outpouring of His godly guidance in our lives, through the Holy Spirit. Anything less my people, is not good enough. Remember, Jesus operates on a basis of excellence, and His followers are expected to do the same. And we’ll end with a few things that will cause us to ramp up our standard of excellence; namely the seventh instalment of our New Year’s ponderings: ‘This year I will be a good student. I will read the newspaper. I will read as many books as possible. I will watch less television. I will be affectionate and daring. I will use my God-given talents. Especially I will watch for answers to prayer and give God the glory. I will give thanks every day for the LOVE of God.’ Wow! Friends, if we can accomplish those things, then we’re well on our way to excellence! Just be careful about reading the newspapers though, for their basic trade is in bad and sorrowful news, and too much of that is not good for the human soul and psyche. So till tomorrow, God willing, when we’ll continue with this Bit, please do your best and leave the rest to God. Much LOVE!…please remember…that there’s no better person to hang out with than Jesus…but hanging out with Jesus…is an individual decision…no one else can make it for you…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 16 January 2011 Job 32:8‏

Job 32:8.    But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration (breath) of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

Ah Friends, disasters, disasters, all over our world! If it’s not extensive flooding in Australia, Brazil and Sri Lanka, with all the attendant misery, then it’s human upheaval in some new theatres of Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Sudan over their referendum. But regardless of the disaster, or what causes it, we know, believe, have faith in, and are sure of one thing: our God Jehovah is still in control and has promised to watch over His adopted children; meaning those who place their faith and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ. What an awesome promise that is my Friends! In fact it’s the only thing that keeps many of us from going insane in this mad, crazy, evil and corrupt world. Oh my people, in these turbulent times we need to grasp tightly and hold on for dear life to the promises of the Most High God, else we’ll flounder and eventually go under. And with that in mind, here is the sixth instalment of our New Year’s ponderings: ‘I will make happy memories this year. I will run in the rain, play in the snow, and be spontaneous with my family and friends. I will give them the gift of my time and attention.’ Now those sure are wonderful resolutions, and certainly do justice to the old adage: ‘the family that plays together stays together.’ Yes Friends, those are among the basic things needed in Christian surroundings. Remember Jesus said that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but ‘I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.’  (John 10:10) That means He didn’t come to earth to die as a sacrificial lamb so that we could continue leading miserable, frightened and unhappy lives, but that we could have joy, live life to the fullest, even to overflowing. I’m not promising to play in the snow right now (smile) but I’ll surely walk in the rain and do all the things that make joyful memories. And believe me Friends, it is important that we make happy memories, for when we get old and incapacitated it is much better to have good, pleasant stuff to look back on, rather than only negative memories. I discovered the wisdom in that just recently, when I sat in my rocker and remembered certain escapades in bygone times that surely made me chuckle. My brethren, please, let’s make it a habit to be joyful as much as possible, although the times they are gloomy and unsure. And it all starts at the same place; with our spirit, and God’s wisdom being entrenched therein. ‘But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration (breath) of the Almighty giveth them understanding.’ Yes my people, we can do nothing without those wise and generous doses of upliftment and encouragement, of grace, mercy, LOVE, forgiveness, etc. etc. that our God showers down on us each and every day. Oh enough of me! Let’s allow the Good Book to do the talking! And here is Job’s wise declaration after the Lord showed him his ignorance. ‘Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts (the mind)? Or who hath given understanding to the heart?’ (Job 38:36) The answer to that and more is obviously the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! And the Preacher corroborates it all: ‘For God giveth to a man that (who) is good in his sight wisdom and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, (the task of gathering and collecting) that he may give to him that is good before God.’ (Eccl.2:26) Now hear the Good Book re Daniel and his three friends’ refusal to eat the king’s food in Babylon, most likely because it was offered to idols and also prohibited by Jewish law. All they ate for ten days was pulse (vegetables) and water. ‘As for these four children (young men), God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning (literature) and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.’ (Dan.1:17) And we know that when all the young men were brought before the king, Daniel and his three amigos not only looked the best physically, but were also adjudged to be the brightest mentally. Why? Because Infinitely Everything gave them the wisdom, strength and will power to overcome Babylon’s indoctrination. Oh Friends, there are numerous passages in the Good Book on wisdom, but we’ll close with one spoken by Jesus, when He rebuked the people in the areas where He’d done most of His work, and yet they still did not believe and repent. ‘At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save (except) the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.’ (Matt.11:25-27) Oh my people, the Lord God is the giver of all good things. Even Jesus recognized it and bowed to His unfailing wisdom. So who are we, mere mortals, creations of God, to dispute His wisdom and plans eh? Oh Friends, to make it as believers, it’s essential we stay in close contact with the Lord and His Holy Word. Till we meet again, God willing, please tread the straight and narrow, so that He will bless us with wisdom and understanding through His Holy Spirit. Much LOVE!…but we preach Christ crucified…unto them which are called…both Jews and Greeks…the power of God…and the wisdom of God… (1 Cor.1:23-24)
