Today’s Scrip-Bit 25 September 2010 Psalm 133:1‏

Psalm 133:1     Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell in unity.

Oh Friends, it’s been another one of those ‘funny-curious’ days in my area; warm and sunny, but with a strong wind cavorting to and fro. I even had to take down the covering on my deck before I was ready since the wind seemed intent on doing it for me. Our weather is surely being unpredictable, for I can’t remember ever seeing such strong, warm winds at this time of year? It shouldn’t be surprising though, because 2010 is set to break the record in these parts for the year with the highest average temperature. But despite our weather not being well balanced, here’s a quote that shows why our lives should be. ‘Physical courage, which despises all danger, will make a man brave in one way; and moral courage, which despises all opinion, will make a man brave in another. The former would seem most necessary for the camp; the latter for the council; but to constitute a great man, both are necessary.’ Those words, attributed to C.C Colton, are the living truth my Friends! To be good, solid believers, we need to be well rounded and balanced in all we do. As Bruh Paul recommended; moderation in all things, with common sense prevailing. We can be brave as all hell on the battlefield, but at the peace table, if we don’t have the rectitude, the moral parts to stand and be courageous there too, then our battlefield courage is wasted. That brings us to our Bit: ‘Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell in unity.’ Oh Friends, this is one of the most important verses in the Good Book, and if we’d only abide by it, at least seventy percent of our problems, if not more, would be readily eliminated because it’s disunity that’s causing most of our problems, from the basic family unit to the worldwide brotherhood. And here’s a great example of why our problems persist: It’s reputed that a couple days ago, at the U.N’s General Assembly Meeting, while the President of Iran was making his speech, thirty odd leaders and/or delegations walked out, ostensibly because they disagreed with his rhetoric. He claims that the world powers refuse to give Iran the respect they deserve, but the powers view Iran as a rogue nation who steadfastly refuses to toe their line. So when shall the twain meet eh? At the rate we’re going, it will be never. The same goes for Israel and Palestine, with both sides refusing to compromise, so they live in a constant state of anger, resentment and strife. But my people that’s such stupid, wasteful, ignorant behaviour on all sides! Further confrontation and strife will only bloom into all out war and destruction, as it has done before, from which there’ll be no real winners. Why can’t we humans get that into our stubborn, egotistic heads eh? Oh Friends, war has never really solved anything; it just puts off the real problems for another time, while fomenting new ones to add to the list. At the end, the vanquished are indeed brought low, but the victors have also suffered severe death and destruction. I’d call that a lose – lose proposition. Now listen to one of the best examples of how to conquer strife. We’re talking of the strife between Abram and Lot’s herdsmen when the cattle of both camps were too plentiful for the land to support. Instead of living in constant strife and conflict, ‘Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? Separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.’ (Gen.13:8-9) Oh Friends, that was so simple! But note Abram’s overriding concern: ‘for we be brethren.’ Granted, not all problems are so easily solved, but there’s always some way to avoid violent confrontation if people are willing to conscientiously sit down and find a solution that doesn’t entail further strife or all out war. Hear how Bruh David describes the joy of brotherhood: ‘It is like the precious ointment (oil) upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts (edge) of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.’ (Ps.133:2-3) Oh my people, doesn’t that sound a whole lot better than steel on steel, or steel on flesh, than bullets whizzing by, and canons roaring? Any day mih people, any day! What’s wrong with peace, LOVE and togetherness eh, that so many are choosing to go the other direction? Bruh Paul told the Romans in no uncertain terms: ‘Let LOVE be without dissimulation (hypocrisy). Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned (affectionate) one to another with brotherly LOVE; in honour preferring (giving preference to) one another.’ (Rom.12:9-10) That’s so much better than the negative emotions that are currently running and ruining our world. But this brotherly LOVE and unity will never happen until, or unless it begins at the smallest unit of society; the family, and then spreads out to societies, nations and the world, for generally speaking, we bring to the world what we learn at home. But if families are in constant strife, as too many are right now, brotherly LOVE and unity will only ever be a pipe dream. That means Jesus’ hard work, suffering and sacrificial efforts would have all been in vain. Friends, we can’t allow that to happen. We need to do much better than we’re doing. And don’t for one moment think that it’s only unbelievers who are living in strife, for many believers are also playing right into Lucifer’s hands with the anger and resentment they either cause or possess. Call me stupid, naïve, or whatever, but I find it difficult to bear grudges and be resentful for any length of time, and I like it so, for then bitterness and hatred don’t get a chance to take root in my soul. But if we allow the negative stuff to grow and foster in our souls, then we can never hope to live in brotherly LOVE and unity, since those emotions are not conducive to that lifestyle. My people, I don’t know what else to say to get us seriously thinking in the right direction, so I’ll let the author of Hebrews take us home; perhaps he’ll have a more positive impact on us. ‘Let brotherly LOVE continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds (prison), as bound (if chained) with them; and them which suffer adversity (are mistreated), as being yourselves also in the body.’ (Heb.13:1-3) Yes Friends, we’re to consider all those who are suffering as if it were us. That’s the first step to attaining brotherly LOVE and harmony; having it in our hearts. Please think seriously on these things and let’s try to make a difference in the world. Much LOVE!…family unity…it blesses…sanctifies and solidifies…just like Jesus desires…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 24 September 2010 Colossians 3:17‏

Colossians 3:17     And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Oh Friends, I hear you exclaiming: ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!’ So let’s chant our Friday chant nuh. ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me through another week of work! It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through. Now, please help me to get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that I can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out and do it all over again next week, furthering your kingdom with each step I take. I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.’ Yes my people, we wouldn’t be able to get through the long, tiring weeks, week after week, if it wasn’t for the Lord’s grace, mercy and compassion. But when we put it all in His powerful, benevolent hands, when we surrender our entire lives to Him, then He fills us with His grace and strength, lifts us up, so that we can truly be, the conquerors He made us to be. That’s why Bruh Paul cautioned the Colossians: ‘And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.’ Friends, if we claim to be believers in Christ, then He should rule our every thought, our every word and our every action. There should be nothing we consider, say or do that doesn’t involve Jesus at its heart. The Father desires us to be like Him, and if we want to please and obey the Father, then we have to seriously try to think and act the way Jesus would in every situation of our lives. I know it’s a lot to ask when we’re surrounded by such ungodly evil, but that’s why we’re different to the unbeliever; our faith and trust in the Holy Trinity empowers us to reach up and out, to live a more righteous and godly life. Bruh Paul said it this way to the Church at Corinth: ‘Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.’ (1 Cor,10:31) Meanwhile, in Psalm 34, the Lord hears the prayer of the righteous, Bruh David proclaims it thus: ‘I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.’ (Ps.34:1-3) Wow! What a powerful testimony! Yes my brethren, we ought to continually bless and praise our God, tell others about Him, and magnify Him together in thankful fellowship. Our Creator, our God, Heavenly Father, Great Provider and Protector deserves no less than the best! As Bruh Paul advised the Ephesians: ‘Speaking to your selves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.’ (Eph.5:19-21) However Friends, we should not take it to the extreme, where every word we utter is God, because that’s just as bad as the other extreme, not paying God any thanks or attention at all. Some of us get so caught up in the Christian thing that we become boring and overbearing, which only turns off others, both believers and unbelievers. Like all things in life we have to strike a happy medium, bringing balance to it. Bruh Paul said it best: ‘Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men…’ (Phil.4:5) Though we should always be thankful and rejoicing, yet our graciousness and reasonableness should shine forth. People ought to see and hears us and know that there’s something different, a good different about us. Look at Jesus: He certainly talked about God, but didn’t rave or try to brow beat others with it. He was just calm and peaceful, even when hurting, and let His lifestyle do most of the talking, for He knew that mankind follows more of what they see than what they hear. And we all know our biggest weakness and failure as Christians is that we don’t walk our talk sufficiently. Oh Friends, that’s definitely our Achilles heel! Just ask any unbeliever why they either dislike or don’t pay much attention to believers, and the number one response will be, we don’t practice what we preach, we’re big hypocrites. Consequently, when Peter talks about us being good stewards of God’s grace, he solemnly declares: ‘If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles (utterances) of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.’ (1 Pet.4:11) Oh Friends, whatever we do in this life, and the next too, ought to satisfy one simple, but also complex requirement; that is glorify our God. If we’ll just set that as our goal, then we’ll be fine. We won’t have too many things to be chastened for, (smile) and God will get the glory He richly deserves. To help us keep that goal, we’ll end with some beautiful advice from Bruh Paul to the Philippians: ‘Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep (guard) your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’ (Phil.4:6-7) Oh my people, truer words were never spoken! So let’s take them to heart and put them into practice nuh, that we can proudly and ably do our duty; glorifying the Most High God Jehovah! Until next time, down here or up there, go in peace and LOVE, with God as your guiding light. Much LOVE!…remember…our lives…they’re all about Jesus…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 23 September 2010 Psalm 6:1‏

Psalm 6:1    O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Oh Friends, can you believe September is almost over! Wow! Where has the month gone eh? And sadly, we have yet another disaster to deal with. The same hurricane Igor that devastated Bermuda on the weekend, did extensive damage to Canada’s east Coast, especially Newfoundland, late Tuesday evening. Ah Lord eh! With winds averaging 140 kmh, and record rainfall of some 200 hundred millilitres in five hours, Igor left a long, sad, heart rending trail of devastation across Newfoundland. With that major disaster comes another call for aid and prayer. The prayer is no problem, and I ask us all to say a word to the Father on their behalf, but where is the aid going to eventually come from if we keep having such major problems so often? And as these disasters were taking place the hundred or so most powerful leaders on the planet were meeting in New York City for the United Nations’ annual General Assembly, to discuss ways of improving and hopefully saving our world. Hn! But if those meetings go as usual, then nothing much will happen. They are apparently trying to upgrade and/or enforce some resolution they passed in 2000, which ten years later has barely seen the light of day, and has improved very little, if anything at all. Ah Friends, for some unknown reason or reasons our leaders just can’t seem to work together for the general good of mankind. Now it’s easy for us to sit back and criticize them, but please remember, in reality the situation is never as cut and dried as it appears. However, having said that, there’s no doubt they can do a whole lot better than they’re currently doing, for now they’re basically doing nothing. All the negatives; war, strife, dissension, anger, hatred, oppression, poverty, disease and sickness are on the rise, instead of being on the wane. I guess the ordinary man has only two choices; to elect better leaders, and to pray diligently that the Lord will direct their hearts away from greed and evil towards His much more pleasant attributes of care and compassion. Oh my people, let’s remember to pray for our leaders every day, because our livelihood and well being ultimately depends on decisions they make and actions they take. Now turning to our Bit: ‘O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.’ Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of our leaders could get down on their knees and solemnly and sincerely plead for mercy from the Most High God Jehovah, then change their evil ways? Yes, it surely would. But unfortunately we can’t hold our breaths waiting for that to happen, because it never will, since too many of them have already sold their souls to Beelzebub. What a pity! Anyway my brethren, I can’t think of a better way to wrap up this series on chastening than by quoting the author of Hebrews, when he expounds on God’s discipline. We’ve heard it all before, but this is like an overview of the subject; brings it all together in one general statement. Listen up…and listen good too: ‘For consider him that endured such contradiction (hostility) of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint (be discouraged) in your minds (souls). Ye have not yet resisted unto blood (bloodshed), striving against sin. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening (discipline) of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked by him: For whom the Lord LOVETH he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, wherefore all are partakers, then are ye bastards (illegitimate), and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which have corrected us, and we gave them reverence (respect): shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure (as seemed best to them); but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised (trained) thereby.’ (Heb.12:3-11) And all God’s people said a big, loud, ‘Thank you Lord!’ Hn, hn! I wish. But seriously Friends, that’s the whole word on chastening in a nutshell. Please, let’s take it seriously and live by it nuh, for by so doing we’ll cause ourselves much less pain and heartache, and consequently all those around us. That’s because though each individual pays for their trespasses, unfortunately others suffer when that happens. So let’s wisely consider the consequences for all concerned, before we commit acts that will lead to chastening. Till we meet again, either on earth or in heaven, walk safely with God. Much LOVE!…obedience…is always better than chastisement…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 22 September 2010 Psalm 6:1‏

Psalm 6:1      O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Oh Friends, rejoice, for it’s a new day filled with abundant, uplifting, new mercies from our wonderful God! In appreciation, let’s say a word of thanks nuh. ‘Thank you heavenly Father for all you’re doing on our behalf. We praise your Holy Name, and humbly ask that you continue to guide, protect and provide for your faithful servants. We LOVE you, and will endeavour to walk worthy of you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.’ Yes Friends, the day is new and so are the blessings, but what kind of ‘funny-curious’ weather will I get in my area today? On the weekend it sank to single digits, then rose to the high teens. Yesterday it was twenty something and windy. So it’s a toss up as to what today will bring? And as to the term ‘funny-curious’, which I haven’t heard in a long while, it just means zigzag, inconsistent, unpredictable, no rhyme or reason to it. And here’s an interesting quote for the Northerners from Sister Mary Kraemer. ‘…Summer coming to an end. So we all try to keep it awake and stretch it out by squeezing in all the boating, picnicking, swimming. Sun, I crave all year.’ And that’s a fact Friends, for with the leaves changing colour and the weather getting colder, everybody’s trying to get in some last minute summertime activities. You Friends who have summer year round, please appreciate and give much thanks for it, because you don’t know how lucky you are, in many ways. Enough with the preamble though, let’s get down to chastening. (smile) Many of us could use some right now, what with the ungodly activities in which we’re engaged. But know one thing mih people, the Lord will deal with us in His own way and time. As Jeremiah reports: ‘For I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure (justice), and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.’ (Jer.30:11) We won’t get away scot-free, but we will receive justice, for that’s our Lord’s modus operandi. Earlier on, Jeremiah pleaded the same thing: ‘O Lord, correct me, but with judgement (justice); not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.’ (Jer.10:24) It’s funny that when we’re doing wrong, and know it, we don’t stop to consider the consequences of those actions. However, when it blows up in our faces, we always quick to turn around and beg for mercy. And luckily for us, the Lord is merciful, as many wrong doers can attest to. But there’s also another side to the coin. Listen to the psalmist: ‘Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest (instructeth), O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law.’ (Ps.94:12) Yes my brethren, we are surely blessed when the Lord chastens us, and leads us back to the right path. And that wisest of all men, Cousin Sol, puts it marvellously: ‘My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of (detest) his correction: For whom the Lord LOVETH he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.’ (Prov.3:11-12) And all God’s people echoed a resounding: ‘Glory Hallelujah!’ Why? It reflects the same relationship we have with our children; we punish them because we LOVE them, and want to see them walk the straight and narrow. And unlike our children, we’d better be happy to be chastened; otherwise it means that He doesn’t care about us. Some of us are thinking that we have no need for chastening, but don’t fool yuh fat Friends, we all do stuff that calls for some sort of retribution. Now no human likes to be chastened or disciplined because it’s often painful. However, due to our innate sinful, rebellious, disobedient nature, it’s often necessary, and we ought to stand up and take it like real men; truly stand our bounce. And that covers the entire sphere of action; from the relationships between children, parents and society in general, to that between all of us and God. Hear the author of Hebrews explain it. ‘Now no chastening (discipline) for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby (trained).’ (Heb.12:11) Yes mih breddren, the chastening isn’t fun when it’s happening, but later on we do appreciate the discipline meted out, for it makes us better servants of the Most High God Jehovah. It brings us more like Jesus, which is the Lord’s overall and eventual desire. So let’s be wise, diligent and faithful, not giving God too many reasons or opportunities to chasten us. (smile) So till we meet again tomorrow, God willing, when we’ll wrap up the chastening story, walk safe and steadfast. And remember to: LOVE Your GOD, LIVE Your FAITH, and SPREAD His WORD! Much LOVE mih people!…don’t forget…prevention is always better than cure…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 21 September 21 2010 Psalm 6:1‏

Psalm 6:1     O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Ah mih Friends, when is not one thing is another yes! Like if the poor people of Bermuda didn’t have enough problems, Hurricane Igor had to come and chastise them even more last Sunday. Ah Lord eh! What’s going on with our world Friends? Are we experiencing more natural disasters than before, because we hear about a new one almost every day, or is it just that modern communication is quicker and more informative? I don’t know the answer to that, but I do know that we each need to say a serious prayer for the Bermudans, and aid them in any way we can. Now I said that Igor chastised Bermuda, it was possibly the wrong word to use since I don’t know if that was punishment from the Lord for doing wrong. It was just the first word that came to mind because it was filled with our Bit. ‘O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.’ Those are Bruh David’s opening words in Psalm 6, A prayer for mercy, but also in Psalm 38, The prayer of a penitent heart, where he pleads: ‘O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.’ (Ps.38:1) The only difference is the word ‘wrath’ replaces ‘anger’ in Psalm 38. Obviously he was conscious of doing wrong and deserving of rebuke or chastening. But he’s wisely pleading for the Lord not to do it in anger, or in a moment of great displeasure, since retribution meted out in those times is usually more severe than when done in calmer moments. Friends, chastening, retribution, punishment is not new, for we’ve all felt and/or experienced it at some time as parents, children and members of the broader society. And the same way Bruh David is pleading not to be rebuked in the Lord’s anger, we should practice the principle of not rebuking or punishing when we’re angry. In fact we shouldn’t make any serious or important decisions when we’re hot under the collar, because then we’re not ruled by wisdom, but by supercharged emotions, and afterwards we’re very likely to regret those decisions made in anger. But having said that, when we do wrong, we can’t always expect to go unpunished. We can do like Bruh David and beg for mercy with excuses: ‘Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed (troubled). My soul is also sore vexed (greatly troubled): but thou, O Lord, how long?’ (Ps.6:2-3) However, chastening, severe or not, is always a very real and distinct possibility, despite our pleas for mercy. From day one, Moses warned the Israelites about it. ‘Thou shalt also consider (know) in thine heart, that as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee.’ (Deut.8:5) And that’s the gospel truth my people! Just as we chasten our children for doing wrong, so the Lord chastens us, His children, for disobedience. The Lord made this very clear to Bruh David in their covenant. Re Cousin Sol, the Lord told him: ‘I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes (strokes) of the children of men. But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.’ (2 Sam.14-15) Ethan the Ezrahite reiterated it in Psalm 89, God’s sure promises to David. ‘If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgements; If they break (profane) my statutes, and keep not (disobey) my commandments. Then will I visit (attend to) their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my LOVING kindness will I not utterly take from him (break off), nor suffer my faithfulness to fail (to be false). My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing (change the word) that is gone out of my lips.’ (Ps.89:30-34) And all God’s people sighed a grateful, ‘Thank you Lord.’ That’s because we know and greatly appreciate the Lord’s goodness and mercy, that though He punishes us for disobedience, once we keep the faith, He will not destroy us. I have to laugh as Bruh David tries to reason with God: ‘For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?’ (Ps.6:5) He’s trying there to remind the Lord that his continued praise and devotion depend on him being alive. And we have a fine example of that in Psalm 118, Thanksgiving for the Lord’s salvation, where the psalmist gratefully declares: ‘The Lord hath chastened me sore (disciplined me severely): but he hath not given me over to death.’ (Ps.118:18) Yes Friends, man’s stubborn, rebellious, foolish nature often needs to be reigned in and made to pay a price, so that we walk in obedience. Now I’ve found many references to chastening in the Good Book, and I intend to use them all, because in these evil, ungodly, immoral, idolatrous times, we all need to be constantly reminded of the fact that disobedience brings punishment. So for the next couple days, or as long as it takes, we’ll stick with the topic of chastening. And we’ll end today with two very important scriptures on it. The first is from Cousin Sol, re how we treat our children. ‘Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.’ (Prov.19:18) Oh Friends, that’s ever so important today because of the waywardness and irresponsibility of our children. And sadly, we are to blame for much of that because we never properly chastened them for their wrongdoing. We were either afraid to, or foolishly figured that since we had it a tad hard, they should have it easy. But unfortunately we’ve done them a very serious injustice with that kind of thinking, for the human animal only seems to appreciate stuff that it’s earned, not freely given. And this last scripture is a stern reminder from God to all of us, His stubborn, rebellious earthly children. ‘As many as I LOVE, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.’ (Rev.3:19) That was the message from Jesus, through John, to the church at Laodicea, which, unfortunately, is still very applicable today my Friends. So let’s smarten up and pay close attention to our words, thoughts and deeds, if we don’t want to be chastened by our LOVING, heavenly Father. Much LOVE!…he who has ears to hear…let him hear…else he’ll certainly feel…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 20 September 2010 Job 21:15‏

Job 21:15     What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

Oh my beautiful Friends in Christ, it’s Monday; time for the Monday Morning Battle Hymn! ‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! We, your humble servants, praise your Holy Name and thank you that this Monday morning we have jobs to go to. They might be jobs we don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but they serve a useful purpose on this our earthly journey; keeping lives, limbs and families together in fairly comfortable circumstances. We also thank you Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm you’ve wrought in our weary souls over the last two days. It’s that rejuvenation of Spirit which allows us now to sally forth with confidence into the evil, ungodly world that surrounds us, to begin a new week of work, where we’ll be constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s wicked taunts, wiles and lies. But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know that the evil enemy cannot harm us once we’re protected by your powerful, protective aura. We humbly ask that you let your Holy Spirit guide and protect us all as we go out to meet the enemy in battle. Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, and thereby further your glorious kingdom here on earth. We pray this in the Holy Name of your Son, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen!’ Oh Friends, that passage right there answers Job’s questions! ‘What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?’ If we don’t, we possibly won’t even have the little we do have, since He’s the Provider of all things, and deep down Job knew that. However, it’s understandable that his faith was badly shaken by the very magnitude and suddenness of his calamities. When one is in severe pain, especially suffering trials for no apparent reason, or fault of your own, it’s extremely difficult to keep one’s faith alive and kicking. But that’s exactly what we need to do my people. It’s in those rough times when our faith is being tested that we need to come up exceedingly strong. You really couldn’t fault Job for thinking the way he did, but the important thing is that his faith did not completely disappear, neither did he curse God, just questioned the rightness and justice of the whole situation. Today, many of us tend to do the same thing when we see the wicked prospering and we, the righteous suffering. But let’s not lose faith my brethren; remember the wicked only prosper for a time, and only on this vanishing earth. As believers, we have to look to the life after this one, that’s the important one, where Jesus is preparing a stately home for us. It’s definitely not easy to suffer the pangs of misfortune, then immediately turn around and say: ‘Thank you Lord!’ though it’s the attitude we need to adopt. Note too Friends, that Job wasn’t the only one to question the Lord’s omnipotence and justice. Long before that Pharaoh asked: ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go?’  (Ex.5:2) But after several deathly plagues befell his prosperous land of Egypt, he certainly became aware of the Lord’s identity and power and let His people go. Job’s friend, Eliphaz, accuses him of terrible sin, asking: ‘Hast thou marked (will you keep to) the old way which wicked men have trodden? Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown (washed away) with a flood: Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for (to) them? Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.’ (Job 22:15-18) Ah mih people, our world is so confusing, and our supposed friends so fickle, that it takes a strong faith and heart to overcome the injustices we face. Job is the perfect example of that. Instead of empathizing with him in his most sorrowful time, his friends accuse him of being extremely wicked and sinful. We heard Eliphaz, now listen to Elihu. ‘What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning (derision) like water? Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men. For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’ (Job 34:7-9) Job must have been deeply hurt by the venomous accusations of his friends when he knew that he’d done nothing to justify his sudden misfortune. Most likely he’d expected their comfort and reassurance rather than the harsh berating of being evil and sinful. And his questioning God’s purpose and right to be worshipped only fuelled the fire of their righteous indignation. But my brethren, unlike Job’s fickle friends, as true believers, we must learn not to pass judgement too quickly; neither on those who suffer serious misfortune or on those who achieve overwhelming fortune, for things are never simply what they seem to be on the surface. We know that our Lord’s plans are higher, wiser and more complex than we can ever understand, so when seeming irregularities pop up, let’s think carefully before judging the recipients. But like Job too, when we’re falsely accused of serious stuff, we have to refute the accusations as best we can, but also stand strong in faith and let the Lord fight the battle for us, because He knows men’s ways. As Job confidently stated: ‘But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.’ (Job 23:10) Yes Friends, the Lord knows all our doings, and if we’re honest and sincere with Him, He’ll certainly fight our battles for us. So let’s not be foolish and doubt or disrespect Him, for He can make or break us in the twinkling of an eyelash. He is our Creator, our strong Provider and sure Help in times of trouble, and deserves our undying praise, thanks, worship and adoration. Let no one make us ever doubt that. Much LOVE!…to bite the hand that feeds and nurtures you…is totally foolish…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 19 September 2010 Proverbs 24:16‏

Proverbs 24:16     For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

Ah mih Friends, the ole fella’s searching his fuzzy brain for a suitable intro, but unfortunately nothing’s coming forth. Steups!  So we’ll simply forego the fancy intro and just jump right into the deep end. (smile) And I have to laugh, because as I wrote that last line, a memory, some fifty odd years old, suddenly flooded my aging cranium. It’s the memory of how I learned to swim. While pretty young, possibly seven or eight, living out Bacolet Street in Scarborough, on God’s Little Acre of Tobago, there was this small, rocky inlet appropriately called ‘Creek’ where we would bathe. Now there was a big rock a little ways out, don’t remember the name, but it was a popular jumping off point for those who could swim. Well at that stage I couldn’t swim, but would always envy some of my older friends who could, and would dive off the rock while I splashed in the shallows. I don’t know what got into me that day, guess I was always a tad adventurous, but I decided I was going to jump off the rock too. So I walked along the rock formation out to it and jumped off. Next thing yuh know, I’m floundering in the deep water, trying to stay afloat. But through dogged determination and an unshakeable will, that said I was not going under for keeps, I eventually made it back to shore. Thereafter, I was a swimmer! Oh Friends, I just realized that was one of the first of many times that the Good Lord bailed me out of a very crucial situation. I couldn’t swim, but under His ever watchful eye, kept battling until I was safe. Praise the Lord mih people! Else you wouldn’t be reading these words now. He obviously knew His plans for me some fifty years hence. Isn’t He a most marvellous God! And He certainly moves in mysterious ways. Here I am, almost a lifespan later, trying to find a suitable intro, and suddenly remember that memorable event, which I can now recognize as His saving grace, and which ties in nicely with what I want to say. And the first matter on the agenda is to share this most appropriate quote of James J. Corbett, where he wisely advises us to: ‘Fight one more round. When your feet are so tired you have to shuffle back to the center of the ring, fight one more round.’ He’s using the boxing ring as an analogy here for life. But isn’t that the living truth my people! Even though we dog tired, we got to keep on fighting; one round at a time, one day at a time. That’s especially true if you’re a believer and want to live right, then you just can’t give up. I guess that day back in the Creek, I must have figured that our subconsciously, because I just wasn’t prepared to go under. And that’s exactly what Cousin Sol is trying to tell us in our Bit: ‘For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.’ Yes my brethren, the righteous always rises again, regardless of how many times they fall. Why is that? Two reasons: because as a believer they have the ‘don’t give up mentality’ indelibly imprinted on their souls, and most importantly, the hand of the Holy Spirit of the Lord God Almighty is always there to help them up each time they stumble and fall. And all God’s people chorused: ‘Thank you Lord!’ Nobody knew this better than Bruh David, and Psalm 34, the Lord hears the righteous, is a treasure trove of scripture to back that up, For example: ‘I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened (radiant): and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.’ (Ps.34:4-6) And if that doesn’t satisfy you, then try this: ‘The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite (crushed) spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.’ (Ps.34:17-20) Oh Friends, to keep the righteous strong and secure is one of God’s most venerable promises. And you know that we can depend completely on Him, for He is faithful that promised. And Micah put the whole thing in its proper perspective when speaking of God’s concern for His people: ‘Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.’ (Mic.7:8) Wow mih breddren! What a tower of strength is our God, that Micah could be so confident in Him! However Friends, the lot of the evil doer is not as fortunate, since Cousin Sol solemnly declares: ‘but the wicked shall fall into mischief.’ For certain sure people, the wicked shall stumble and fall into all sorts of calamity, with death, destruction and damnation being their eventual end. In Psalm 34, Bruh David also expresses the sorry fate of the wicked. ‘The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off (destroy) the remembrance of them from the earth…Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate (condemned or held guilty).’ (Ps.34:16, 21) Oh my people, the destruction of the wicked is recorded so much throughout the Good Book, that it’s indeed a rather foolish person who will align himself with iniquity workers having heard so much about their eventual demise. Time and space won’t allow me to go through many of them, but this one example should suffice. It happens in Babylon, when Haman, the king’s wicked right hand man plots to destroy the Jews, but Esther the queen and her uncle Mordecai thwart his evil intent. When the king finds out, he’s quite angry, but what follows is too convenient, and is surely the Lord’s doing. The Good Book recounts it this way: ‘And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains (eunuchs), said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon. So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified (subsided).’ (Esth.7:9-10) Nuff said mih people! So let’s walk in righteousness that we can get back up every time we stumble and fall nuh. It’s the Lord’s faithful promise to those who walk obedient to Him. Much LOVE!…when things not right…hold on tight…doh leggo…doh leggo…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 18 September 2010 1 Thessalonians 5:24‏

1 Thessalonians 5:24      Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Oh Friends, it’s a new day, we haven’t seen our photos or read our names in the obits, which means we’re alive. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that all’s right in our world, for some of us might be shaking it fairly rough in these tremulous, uncertain times. However, I want us all to remember these most encouraging words: ‘This I recall to mind, therefore I have hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.’ (Lam.3:21-23) And all God’s people said a grateful: ‘Thank you Lord!’ Now isn’t that an excellent way to segue into our continuing Bit? It sure is! Strong words from Jeremiah; a man who suffered imprisonment and many other indignities in spreading God’s Word. But God had made such a strong, indelible impression on him, that even in lamenting his situation, he remembers the faithfulness of our God, His compassions and mercies, and refuses to give up. ‘The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.’ (Lam.3:24) Yes Friends, regardless of what problems we’re currently facing, we all need to acquire and hold on to that positive feeling Jeremiah had. And please notice where that strong surge of faith and trust came from: ‘The Lord is my portion, saith my soul.’ It wasn’t his mind telling him that, but his soul; the very heart of his being, that little corner of us all that God reserves for Himself. It can only be filled by God, and if it isn’t, then we feel miserable and empty, despite all our worldly power and possessions. And in Bruh Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians, he reminds them of what he said in the first. ‘But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you and keep you from evil (the evil one).’ (2 Thess.3:3) Oh Friends, that’s something we need to be continually reminded of, because life is so complex and confusing with the wily enemy always on the prowl, that if our souls are not completely focused on God, then we’ll be an easy target for him. Meanwhile, the author of Hebrews wisely advises us: ‘Let us hold fast the profession (confession) of our faith (hope) without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised.)’ (Heb.10:23) And in the next chapter, the one on God’s many faithful servants, he reminds us: ‘Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of (bore) a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who hath promised.’ (Heb.11:11) I know it’s not always easy to keep up that constant trust mih breddren, especially when many things in our lives are going wrong, but it’s essential that we do, for at least with that faith we have hope, but if we lose the faith, then the hope dies, and everything crashes. Bruh David in Psalm 40, a Praise for answered prayer, said it thus: ‘I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy LOVING-kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.’ (Ps.40:10) And Ethan the Ezrahite, in Psalm 89, God’s sure promises to David, had this to say: ‘I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.’ (Ps.89:1) Now listen to Peter, the rock on which Christ built His Church. And if anybody knows about this topic, he should. ‘Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.’ (1 Pet.4:19) Oh Friends, the Christian life is certainly a hard road we’ve chosen to travel, but remember that all worthy things are not easily gained, and involve some amount of struggle. And the excellent thing about being a servant of the Most High God Jehovah, is not only, ‘Faithful is he that calleth you,’ but ‘who also will do it.’ Yes mih kinfolk, our God not only calls us to do His will, but also enables us to do it. Bruh Paul explained this to the Philippians: ‘Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform (complete) it until the day of Jesus Christ.’ (Phil.1:6) Oh yes people, our God will certainly enable us perform all endeavours in His Name till Christ returns! And as Jesus told the group in Capernaum who asked Him: ‘What shall we do that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.’ (John 6:28-29) Yes my brethren, God’s work is for us to believe in His Son Jesus, whom He sent to die for us, so that He could reclaim our sinful souls. Let’s acknowledge Him in word and deed as our Lord and Saviour nuh, and go out and tell it to the entire world, as he asked us to do. That’s the Christian thing to do! (smile) And in closing Friends, it’s very important we realize that we’re not dealing with a wishy-washy, unreliable deity, but a strong, reliable, upstanding, righteous, and just God; He of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And if you don’t believe me, listen to what Jesus told Peter as they passed by the withered fig tree that Jesus had cursed, and Peter drew His attention to it: ‘Have faith in God.’ (Mark 11:22) Yes my people, four simple words from our Master that say a whole lot. Please take them to heart and walk in peace, LOVE and blessings, till we meet again tomorrow, God willing. Much LOVE!…faithful…faithful…faithful…forever faithful is our God…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 17 September 2010 1 Thessalonians 5:24‏

1 Thessalonians 5:24     Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Oh Friends, it’s time once again to joyfully shout: ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!’ So let’s chant our Friday mantra nuh. ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me through another week of work! It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through. Now please help me to get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that I can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out there and do it all over again next week, furthering your kingdom with each step I take. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen’ Yes Friends, it’s been a roughish week for many of us, but as believers, we have no real reason to fret and worry because we’re in the same privileged boat like the Thessalonians when Bruh Paul, in exhorting them to stand strong in the faith, so rightly informed them: ‘Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.’ Oh mih people, there are no truer words in the Good Book! For if nothing else, our God has proven Himself to be faithful from day one, right up to now. Look at all those people who served Him and were faithfully rewarded. People like Abraham, Moses, Bruh David, Joshua, Nehemiah, Ruth, Daniel, his buddies, and many more too numerous to mention! Oh Friends, you can count on one thing, put yuh head on the block for this; that if the Lord calls you to do something for Him, then He will stand beside you. No doubt about that! Hn! And I have to laugh because the Holy Spirit just jogged my mind with a ‘you too;’ subtly reminding me of my own position in writing this Bit. Unfortunately that never entered my thought processes in the planning stages, so I have to say; ‘Sorry Lord.’ But my brethren, I can surely attest to the fact of God’s faithfulness, for He called me to write the Bit, and you all know my misgivings, but from the first day He’s stood staunchly by me, helping me to write something sensible for over three and a half years. Wow! Okay, we won’t question the sensible part. (smile) It hasn’t always been easy, and I’ve often despaired when time seemed to be running out on me, but Friends, every time, every single, solitary time, the Lord has come through for me, as those of you who have been with me from the beginning can attest to. So if there’s one testimony I can surely testify to, it’s our God’s faithfulness! Bruh Paul could also testify mightily on that, for without God’s faithfulness, he would never have survived the slings and arrows he suffered, or be able to write all the stuff he did, much of it from prison. Oh thank the Lord for His everlasting faithfulness Friends! Isaiah too proclaimed the Lord’s loyalty: ‘…Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel…’ (Is.49:7) Yet it is Bruh Paul, who, possibly more than anyone else, drove the engine of our God’s steadfastness. Hear him: ‘God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.’ (1 Cor.1:9) And again to the Corinthians: ‘There hath no temptation taken (overtaken) you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear (endure) it.’ (1 Cor.10:13) And all God’s people gratefully sang out: ‘Glory Hallelujah!’ Oh mih people, how can we not truly LOVE, steadfastly serve, loyally worship and revere such a magnificent and magnanimous God eh? It just boggles my imagination that humans can turn to other supposed deities, when the ONE TRUE God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob has shown His invincible power and authority and kept all His promises since the beginning of time! Oh Friends, no human can point out any supernatural feats, or solid promises, that any other supposed deity has ever done and faithfully kept, for they are all false gods, mere idols with no power whatsoever. And all we who believe in the Holy Trinity know this for a fact, that’s why we believe! Oh Friends, I’m going to end here now, though the Spirit is stirring me up. (smile) The adrenalin is flowing, but we’ll leave the rest of what I want to say for tomorrow, God willing of course. There’s so much that can be said on the subject. And we’ll close with some words of wisdom from Cousin Sol: ‘A wicked messenger falleth into mischief (trouble): but a faithful ambassador is (brings) health.’ (Prov.13:17) Yes my people, ambassadors of Christ all, I’m imploring us to go out there into the evil, ungodly world and let our lights shine, bring health, rather than trouble to all we encounter, so that at the end, Jesus can greet us all with a: ‘Well done, good and faithful ambassador!’ Much LOVE!…to encourage faithfulness in others…one must first be faithful…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 16 September 2010 Matthew 28:18‏

Matthew 28:18     And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Ah Friends, another icon of West Indian entertainment has sadly departed this life. Alphonsus Celestine Edmund Cassell MBE (Nov. 1954 – Sept. 1010) went to join the Saints in God’s country yesterday at the young age of 55. We all knew him as Arrow, the always joyful and jubilant performer, and will forever remember him every time we sing or party to his biggest hit; ‘Hot, Hot, Hot.’ Yes Friends, unfortunately Arrow died of that dreaded current scourge, cancer, in his native Montserrat surrounded by friends and family. He was undoubtedly one of the influential and creative entertainers that put Soca on the world stage, adding a different vibe to it by including other Caribbean genres and a North American sound that made it more appealing to many listeners, but also created many dissenters. But like him or not, you can’t deny that he played a very prominent part in making West Indian music internationally acclaimed. And though he had a vast catalogue of material, his legacy will forever be associated with ‘Hot, Hot, Hot.’ My favourite memory of that song is one night, way back when, at a concert in Shaw Park in Tobago, when the Baker Bros. Disco started jamming it, a group of us in the stands began beating our bottles and spoons and chanting; ‘Hot, Hot, Hot,’ while a cool breeze from the nearby ocean washed over us, reducing the heat. Oh the irony of it all! Anyway Arrow, mih son, we’ll certainly miss your vibrant, scintillating music and your pleasant smile, but we’ll never forget you. And I’m sure you’ll soon be musically engaged with the other musicians in that great orchestra in the sky. And having said goodbye to Arrow, we’ll share some words of another once powerful human being; Winston Churchill, who reputedly said: ‘A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject.’ Now my brethren, that’s gospel, but it’s also one of the serious problems that’s afflicting our world today. They’re simply too many fanatics, spreading too much fanaticism! Everybody has some cause they’re willing to talk, fight or even die for. And sadly, we all want to hang on to these dreams, ideas or beliefs too strenuously although we know that they’re unworkable, unfair and even foolish. But we simply believe what we believe and convince ourselves that nobody, or nothing’s going to change our mind. Ah mih people, that’s one of the things causing so much strife and confusion in our already disaster filled world. And unless we do something about it soon, the whole pot, no it’s too big to be just a pot, the whole cauldron is liable to bubble up and boil over into a vast conflagration. However, no one wants to give up their cherished cause or belief, figuring that it’s the right one. But Friends, nothing will change if nobody wants to change their mindset or relax their hold on whatever is causing the division. The divide will only widen, causing the strife and confrontation to get worse. Let’s take a quick overview of what’s currently happening: There are several religions in the world, each with different sects or groups that don’t see eye to eye, so they’re in dissension. In politics, it’s all about personal and party power, while the good of the country and its people are banished to the sidelines. The world leaders can’t agree on much of anything though they hold annual summits. They only come up with minor agreements that are mostly never implemented. And the little that get’s done, makes little difference. Then we have the social set up of the societies, with each leader touting their personal favourite. So we have supposed democracy, socialism, communism, dictatorships and various combinations of the above, but within each aspect, there are various positions along the continuum, held by various people, so the high degree of strife and dissension we’re now seeing is unavoidable. Oh Friends, the only answer to this divisive society is for us, the six billion souls on the planet to truly and sincerely worship and serve the ONE TRUE GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; the Creator, Ruler, Provider and Safe Keeper of our universe. Anything else is totally worthless. That’s because His rule is the ONLY ONE that preaches PEACE and LOVE as the basic tenets, and they are the essential elements needed to end any form of strife and dissension. Why do you think Jesus’ last directions and instructions to His disciples were: ‘All power is given unto me in heaven and earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.’  (Mat.28:18-20) Yes my people, that’s our direction, our orders, our bounden duty; to spread the Word all over the world, so that God’s children will be unified and live in peace and harmony. Oh yes, it’s definitely a tall order, but remember we’re not alone, God is always with us, in the form of His Holy Spirit, and ANYTHING is possible in this world if the Lord God Jehovah is involved. So let’s boost our faith, stand strong and steadfast and see what we can do about the volatile situation in our world nuh. If each of us did a little more in our own little corner, then the sum of it all would indeed be overwhelming. So may we all get a renewed interest, a renewed vision of Christ in our souls and go out and make it happen! Jesus is depending on us. Till we meet again my people, God willing, walk safely with the Lord. Much LOVE!…the only truly unifying force in the universe…JESUS…!
