Today’s Scrip-Bit 15 November 2014 1 Thessalonians 5:17

1 Thessalonians 5:17.      PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.

And now that it’s Saturday my brethren, what’s on the agenda eh?  I do hope that whatever you have planned includes ample time for God; sufficient time to relieve some of the stress and strain of the past workweek.

I’d certainly advise that before you do anything else today, to spend some quiet time with the Father; tell Him your woes and problems, give them to Him, because that’s what He wants; to relieve you of all your heavy burdens and give you His light burden and easy yoke. (Matt.11:28-30)

But please remember to also thank Him for your many blessings… and you do have a lot to be thankful for if you are living in the Western world. You might not think so, but just compare your situation to the billions of others around the world who are living in so much worse situations than yours; so many in real abject poverty.

As the saying goes, there’s always someone worse off than us. And if you still want to complain after that, then may the Lord be with you. (smile)

Now here’s a little something that caught my fancy from the One Year Book of Bible Promises. It’s simply titled, ‘The Reason.’ ‘God, why am I so often defeated? Why am I so full of dread and anxiety? Why am I so lamentably weak – So perilously susceptible to temptation?

Why am I often inhospitable So intolerant of the needs of others? Why am I so undisciplined  So restless and dissatisfied? Why do I protest so violently? Above all, God Why do I so frequently lose The sense of Your Shining Presence? God, why?  Why?’

And Friends, the answer is what titillated my spirit when I first read it. ‘Because you pray so little.’

Oh my people those five words are filled with so much truth, it’s not funny! We will indeed feel that lost, undisciplined, weak and inhospitable state when our prayer life is not up to scratch! It’s like taking medication for an illness, and for whatever reason we let it peter off or simply stop it. The illness most likely won’t get better, because the body needs whatever is in the medication to right itself.

Prayer is like that to the human spirit my brethren. If we don’t do it consistently, then our spirits experience serious upheaval, with little or no joy, peace and LOVE.  And the biblical promise for that upheaval of spirit was ‘Keep on praying.’ That’s the New Life Bible version of our Bit: ‘Pray without ceasing.’

I prefer our old fashioned statement though, because I believe it says more, conveys a deeper meaning than just ‘keep on praying,’ which simply assumes that you have been praying. Whereas our Bit is more like a direct command: ‘Pray without ceasing.’

And I think that is brought out in the scholars’ explanation. ‘5:17. The Greek word here rendered without ceasing is used in secular literature to denote a man suffering from an intermittent cough – one that is not continuous, but occurs at intervals. Just as this individual has the tendency to cough, though does not always do so audibly, so the believer ought to remain in the attitude of prayer though not always praying audibly.’

Yes my people, a constant stream of communication with our heavenly Father is most beneficial in this earthly life. Here’s how Bruh Paul told it to the Ephesians, after advising them to never be without their spiritual armour. (Eph.6:10-17)

‘Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.’ (Eph.6:18)

And the scholars’ tell us: ‘6:18. Praying is grammatically linked to “stand” in verse 4. Without prayer God’s armour is inadequate to achieve victory. Prayer is indispensable. Always means “on every occasion,” that is, when Satan attacks.

In the Spirit signifies that with the Spirit’s help such prayer for divine aid is to be made. Watching thereunto means “being vigilant in this very matter” of prayer. They are to pray not just for themselves but also for all saints; spiritual combat is both an individual and corporate matter.’

All of that is oh so true my people! Prayer is indispensable! As believers, we simply can’t do without it. And the Holy Spirit was gifted to us to help us with prayer, which ought to be made both for ourselves and all other believers.

Remember, we are individuals on one level, but on another, we are also one body in Christ Jesus, and we sink or swim together! That’s something I don’t think we consider enough in these modern times, because individuality is touted around the world as being so important.

Anyway Friends, let’s close with the statement after our Bit; another positive one that again reads more like a command. ‘In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.’ (1 Thess.5:18)

That too my people is indispensable for all true believers! The importance of giving thanks can never be underestimated.

And the scholars explain that verse thus: ‘5:18. In every event or circumstance (thing) the Christian is to give thanks to God for the good He can bring out of the event, even should the event be unpleasant. The constant attitude of prayer, mentioned in verse 17, will help the believer maintain gratitude in the face of adversity.’

And that’s gospel truth Friends; constant prayer will help us with constant giving of thanks, even in the worse of situations. So let’s get a move on now, let’s pray with a thankful attitude! That is the wisdom of the ages! Much LOVE!

…prayer and the giving of thanks…are inseparable entities in a true believer’s life…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 10 October 2013 John 13:34

John 13:34.    A new commandment I give unto you, That ye LOVE one another; as I have LOVED you, that ye also LOVE one another.

Oh Friends, oh Friends, I’m here to tell you a few wonderful things this beautiful autumn morn! First off, that God LOVES you unconditionally, and that He will give you everything your heart desires, provided it lines up with His will. I’m here to also let you know that you are indeed heading in the right direction by being a sincere follower of Jesus Christ.

Wow! What a rush that brings! (smile) And following as a direct consequence of all that, the action of God is now flowing through you in a pattern of success! Therefore, please make it a habit to be happy; practice LOVE, practice being peaceful, because no one, or nothing ever becomes successful or succeeds without much practice. And thus ends the sermon for today! (smile)

Ah mih people, life is hard enough without us making it even harder by having sour, miserable, fearful and anxious attitudes. We need to laugh and be comfortable in our own skin, look at ourselves in the mirror and like what we see, not in a narcissistic manner, for we truly can’t like other humans until we like the one that looks back at us in the mirror. It’s just a natural fact of life. If we dislike ourselves, we’ll simply dislike a whole lot of other people, for dislike will come more naturally to us than like.

And one more thing, let’s stop wishing that we were other people, for God made us to be who we are, not somebody else. Forget the material wealth, the physical good looks, the powerful positions, or the celebrity status that they may have. Their material and physical attributes won’t last forever.

And believe me, if you knew the real truth about their lives, how they got what they have, and the messy situations in which they’re embroiled, you won’t give up your bland and simple but godly life. Plus they all have fears, anxieties and problems like you, they just hide them better behind their public facades.

Yes my people, we cannot be kind to, or LOVE others until we are kind to and LOVE ourselves, wherever and whatever we are. That’s what Jesus is saying in our Bit. ‘A new commandment I give unto you, That ye LOVE one another; as I have LOVED you, that ye also LOVE one another.’

He’s asking that we follow His example; just the way He LOVED us, we ought to LOVE each other. And as He so wisely continues: ‘By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have LOVE one to another.’ (John 13:35)

Ah Friends, that logic follows so logically, (smile) like the day follows the night, and vice versa. Jesus’ manifesto is LOVE! That’s what He came to earth to spread; the LOVE of our heavenly Father. He came to begin a serious LOVE Revolution, one that would revolutionize the entire world!

And as His followers, He expects us to continue building that LOVE Revolution, so that others will know we’re part and parcel of His world movement. But it’s obvious my brethren that we’re falling far short of Jesus’ expectations, because true or real LOVE is one of the hardest, if not the hardest thing to find in this wicked, deceitful, ungodly world.

And we’re not talking about romantic LOVE here, but a simple caring for each other, kindness to make sure that we all at least have the basic necessities of life. But Friends, we’re very very far from that utopian position, for too many are suffering from terrible want and abject poverty, while too few have too much, enough to last them several lifetimes, but they selfishly refuse to share with their unfortunate brethren in this life.

How sad eh! And that definitely doesn’t fall under Jesus’ directions. Remember too, when the Pharisees, in trying to entangle Jesus in His own words… What fools they were eh, how can mere mortals tangle up God! And sadly they’re plenty like them still around today.

Anyway, one of them, a lawyer – had to be – (smile) figuring he was so bright, asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment? ‘

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt LOVE the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’ (Matt.22:37-40)

There we have it again Friends: It’s all about LOVE, about sharing and caring and being kind to each other. First we LOVE the Lord God Jehovah, then we LOVE ourselves, and then we LOVE our neighbours as ourselves. But how can we LOVE our neighbours if we don’t LOVE ourselves? It’s not possible.

And unfortunately that’s what we’re seeing, that is the prevalent attitude in our world today. There’s a complete lack of real LOVE for self, but a selfishness that’s so great it cannot be measured. LOVING ourselves doesn’t mean being proud, arrogant and selfish, but strong, confident, caring, giving and faithful, walking in the footsteps of Jesus.

And we’ll end with some strong words from Bruh Paul to the Thessalonians, regarding his appeal for purity. ‘For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth (rejects), despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

But as touching (concerning) brotherly LOVE ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to LOVE one another. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more.’ (1 Thess.4:7-10)

Yes Friends, the Thessalonians were getting the message of LOVE for each other and putting it into action, but Bruh Paul just wanted them to increase that action, spread it further and further. Now that’s exactly what we need to do today too my people!

We claim to LOVE God, but hate our brothers. As John so aptly puts it, that makes us liars: ‘for he that LOVETH not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he LOVE God whom he hath not seen?’ (1 John 4:20b) That says it all my fellow believers!

So today, let’s turn back to God and live in true LOVE nuh. Let’s put aside all the foolish things that lead us away from God and true fellowship with each other. Our world is in serious decline because it’s sadly lacking in true LOVE. And the only way we can advance Jesus’ LOVE Revolution is by spreading LOVE, not the negative emotions that are currently predominating.

So let’s take off our blinkers, put on our 20/20 eyes of faith and get out into this wicked world and sow some, no lotsa LOVE, as Jesus desires of us. Remember, we reap what we sow. You can’t plant corn and expect to reap peas. Much LOVE!

…you can only reap LOVE and its wonderful benefits…when you first sow LOVE…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 13 November 2012 Psalm 4:3

Psalm 4:3.     But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.

And then it was Tuesday! What did the old nursery rhyme say? ‘Monday’s child is fair of face. Tuesdays child is full of grace.’ But that’s not the whole truth; EVERY DAY, we believers are full of grace! Yes Friends, a wonderful day is in the offing for many of us because we believe in the Birth, Crucifixion and Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and consequently we’ll bask in the warmth, the peace and the glow of His many blessings. Unfortunately though, a lot of His followers around the world can’t do that for one reason or another; physical and mental oppression, and suppression which create a lack of freedom to worship, abject poverty and sickness, plus misfortunes from natural and man-made disasters, that ultimately breed a terrible fear in their souls. However my people, we Christians have the greatest, the most potent tool in this world; the power of prayer! So let’s use it nuh. Let’s keep praying, both for those who are not as fortunate as us, as well as ourselves. Let’s pray diligently that whatever is preventing them from enjoying the good life that Jesus died for all His followers to have, will soon be removed, that their eyes will be opened, and their hearts, minds and souls filled with the LOVE, the grace, and compassion of Jesus, which surpasses all human understanding. Oh my brethren, that power of prayer has been with us from day one, that’s why Bruh David could staunchly proclaim in our Bit, taken from his evening prayer of trust in God: ‘But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.’ Now that’s an undeniable fact Friends! As Bruh Paul tells Timothy: ‘Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.’ (2 Tim.2:19) And on that point of foregoing wrongdoing, listen to what Bruh David says in the verse before our Bit. ‘O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? How long will ye LOVE vanity (worthlessness), and seek after leasing (falsehood)?   Selah.’ (Ps.4:2) Yes my people, let’s take a moment and ponder that question nuh, for it’s possibly the most important question that can be asked in our sinful, ungodly world today. Ah Friends, when are we truly going to depart from iniquity, eschew evil, and all the abominations of this confused, troubled world eh? When are we going to repent and turn back to seriously worshipping the God of our salvation, so that He can bless us and make us to prosper once more? The LOVE Revolution is making some progress, but definitely not enough, or as quickly as needed, because of Lucifer’s wicked input and stranglehold on this lustful world. However my people, as everyday brings us closer to Christ’s Second Coming in all His glory, it’s also becoming more urgent everyday for us to cause unbelievers to come to Him for salvation. Strong and serious ongoing action is necessary, as well as strong, serious, diligent prayers. We need to cry out to the Father, my brethren, for grace, strength and mercy to do His will, somewhat like how Bruh David cries out to begin Psalm 4. ‘Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged (relieved) me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me (be gracious to me), and hear my prayer.’ (Ps.4:1) And don’t ever be afraid or ashamed to cry out to the Father my people, because He welcomes it, since it acknowledges that we can’t help ourselves. And believe me, once our hearts are right, He WILL hear and answer our prayers. Not always how or when we want, but that’s the beauty of trusting Him; accepting that His wisdom is greater than ours, therefore He knows what is best for us. And as Bruh Paul reminds us in Rom.8:31, whatever He does, will turn out to be for our ultimate good, regardless of what happens in between. That’s one of the ways in which the Lord tests our faith Friends! Therefore: ‘Stand (tremble) in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.   Selah.’ (Ps.4:4) Words of absolute wisdom my brethren! And we’ll close with some more encouraging words on the subject from the prophet Nahum, who, in talking about God’s majesty in mercy and judgement, strongly proclaims: ‘The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. But with an overrunning (overflowing) flood he will make an utter end of the (wicked) place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.’ (Nah.1:7-8) That my people, is the gospel truth, so please believe it and live accordingly, for your very salvation and life everlasting depends on it. Much LOVE!…to pray…to pray…and yet to pray some more…it’s all a part of the true believer’s lifestyle…
