Proverbs 27:1.       Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Well, it’s that day, when all the voices around the world can’t help but sing ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!’ Let’s hope that those who went to work on clear, dry ground this morning won’t be too unhappy when they have to make the evening drive home in snowy weather conditions. Yes, the snow has begun coming down in my area, and granted, right now it’s merely trickling down, but as my Jamaican people would say, ‘one one cocoa full basket.’ And that’s the truth, a little of anything builds up over time, so if the snow continues to fall, even as slowly as it’s now doing, by this afternoon a fair amount would have fallen and made driving and walking conditions difficult. 

So, a word of warning, unless you must go out, don’t go! (smile) And today we’ll talk about a very popular but unwise thing that we all do from time to time. It comes from the wise words of Cousin Sol in Proverbs, under the general heading of ‘The Wrath of a Fool. It says: ‘Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.’ (Prov. 27:1) And doesn’t that sound familiar. It certainly does! For as James, Jesus’ brother, so wisely wrote to the Jewish diaspora. 

‘Go to now (come now), ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain (make a profit): Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice (boast) in your boastings (arrogance): all such rejoicing (boasting) is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.’ (James 4:13-17) 

Oh my people, what wonderful words of wisdom and good advice are to be found in that passage of scripture! First, we make all sorts of pronouncements about our future without including God, without even asking for His opinion and/or direction. That’s not wise, for who knows what another day may bring, since our lives are as vapour, that’s here one minute and gone the next. A lot of people went to bed last night expecting to get up this morning and continue life as usual, only to be disappointed, because they were either too ill to get up or the Lord had called them home during the night. That just shows how little control we have over our lives. 

Again, many people who have left home this morning hale and hearty to go to work, won’t return home this evening because they either got sick at work and ended up in the hospital, or they met in a car accident and unexpectedly departed this life. So that should teach us two things; firstly, to always involve God in all of our decisions, to seek out His eternal wisdom on whatever we’re planning to do. And secondly, to always be good to the ones we LOVE, show them true appreciation, and tell them we LOVE them at every opportunity, for we don’t know if or when we will be unexpectedly separated. 

Now, all of that reminds us of the parable of the rich fool that Jesus told, when asked about dividing an inheritance between two brothers. First off, He warned: ‘Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.’ (Luke 12:15) Yes friends, the tentacles of the green eyed monster; envy, jealousy, selfishness and covetousness are rampant in our world today. We must remember though that our earthly possessions are not the most important things in our lives, for as we said earlier on, our lives are like a wisp of vapour; one minute here, then gone the next. So why spoil our already short lives by coveting and fighting for earthly things that we will just leave behind for others to fight over eh? It’s the height of foolish pride! 

Then Jesus told this most appropriate parable. ‘The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits (store my crops)? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow (store) all my fruits (crops) and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.’ (Luke 12:16- 21) 

As usual, my fellow saints, Jesus did not mince words. He spoke it loudly and plainly. Those who don’t have God in their lives, as their guiding light, will eventually stumble and fall into the darkness of the evil one. Please, let us learn the necessary lessons from all that we’ve said this morning, so we don’t fall into Satan’s evil net. Now, it’s time to go to the throne of grace, through our Friday Chant, asking for help in these our desperate times of need. 

As one voice: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through this past week. You know it’s been rough… because our many serious problems are escalating instead of improving. And it’s obvious we can’t fix them on our own, so Lord, we’re desperately crying out for your help. Oh heavenly Father, with your omnipotent help, and our trusting faith, we know that we can stand strong and steadfast and defeat the simmering unrest in our land. We therefore ask you Lord to give our leaders the wise guidance to handle these unexpected storms properly. 

And please help the rest of us to be responsible and to stay safe amidst all the anxiety and confusion of these ungodly times. We fervently pray too Lord that you’ll use the discontent and dissatisfaction in our land as a means of restoring faith in you. Return backsliders to your fold. Show them the error of their ways. And please introduce a new flock of believers, who will embrace your LOVE and compassion by the example, we, your faithful believers set. So that our sinful world can wake up and smell the coffee, wake up and smell it sweet and strong! We pray this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen!’ 

And I’d just like to remind us that no divine help will be forthcoming until we show the ‘trusting faith’ and be the good ‘examples of faithful believers,’ we spoke of in our prayer. Much LOVE!

Romans 12;3.     ​For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Yeh friends, it’s Wednesday once again…and getting over this hump is a crucial aspect of our work week. Once we do, we see it as a done deal rather than as a challenge that Monday, the start of the week, seems to throw out. But let’s remember that when Christ is sincerely in our lives, we are up to and ready for each and every challenge that the evil world sends our way, for He is our strength, and with Him running the show, we can do all things that need doing! Glory be my fellow saints in Christ! 

And I believe that this poem from our One Year Book of Bible Promises with writings by Ruth Harms Calkin gives us a good idea of how to suit up ourselves for the challenges of life. It’s titled ‘Sane Estimate.’

Please pray with me: ‘Lord, help me to face with honesty And genuine appreciation The talents and abilities You have given As special gifts to me. Give me a sane estimate of myself. Neither exaggerated nor mud-crawling. Just sane, as Your Word admonishes. May I be joyfully satisfied With Your unique plan for me. When at times I’d secretly LOVE to ride On a colourful float Beautifully adorned Waving to cheering crowds Smile at me, Lord. With a twinkle in Your eye Remind me again That somebody has to build the float.’ 

Yeh friends, somebody has to build the float before we can ride on it in the parade waving to cheering, festive folks! And ofttimes that somebody has to be us. The Lord has made each of us in His own image, but with unique differences and talents which we need to be able to successfully complete the also unique plan He’s made for every one of His creation. 

And the Bible verse associated with that poem is also our Bit for today; the immortal words of Bruh Paul to the church at Rome: ‘For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly that he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.’ (Rom. 12:3) 

Oh my people, so many of us in this current world need to take that advice so badly because so many of us think much more highly of ourselves than we ought to! Boasting and self-aggrandization has unfortunately become a way of life in our modern society, and its evil tentacles even reach out and embrace supposed believers, who ought to know better. Sadly too, we also have the believer who behaves like a ‘mud-crawling’ animal, not thinking enough of him or herself, and thus wallowing in the mire of self-pity and not functioning the way Christ expects. 

But neither state is what the Lord planned nor desires of us. And I guess that’s why Bruh Paul wrote to the Galatians, re his meeting with the apostles in Rome. Some of them seemed to think little of Bruh Paul, neither did they impress him (Gal. 2:1-6)

‘But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually (worked effectively) in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty (worked effectively) in me toward the Gentiles. 

And when James, Cephas (Peter), and John, who seemed to be the pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen (Gentiles), and they unto the circumcision (Jews). Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward (eager) to do.’ (Gal. 2:7-10) 

Yuh see friends, especially in high circles, and the church is no exception, there is great susceptibility to think more highly of ourselves and not enough of others, which causes us to make a mess of God’s plans. But thankfully James and John and Peter, the stalwarts of the then church recognized Bruh Paul’s God-given grace to take the Word to the Gentiles, and only reminded him to remember the poor which is a vital part of Christ’s ministry, something that he was already eager to do.

The two groups of believers had been entrusted with the very same gospel, but to two different groups of people. So it really doesn’t matter to whom God’s grace leads us, once we recognize the leading and fervently obey it. As Bruh Paul later wrote to the church at Ephesus: ‘There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.’ (Eph. 4:4-7) 

Yes my brethren, the church is one body, speaking of Christian unity in the oneness of Holy Spirit, Father and Christ. It is the same ONE GODHEAD who gives to all of us, but who gives different gifts individually, to do the work He’s planned for each individual. So there is unity, as well as diversity in the church, because of the different gifts, but ALL of it is endowed with grace, spiritual energy from the One God so we can perform our God-given tasks successfully. 

And these wise words on the subject from Cousin Sol make a good going-home present (smile). ‘It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search (seek) their own glory is not glory.’ (Prov. 25:27) Then there’s this: ‘Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.’ (Prov. 27:2) And with those awesome words of wisdom throbbing vibrantly in our hearts, bodies and souls, let’s go home declaring (ah Lord eh) our Wednesday Wail, letting the world know of our wonderful position in Christ Jesus. 

Altogether now, in strong voice, with sincere hearts: ‘Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: I’m so glad to be alive on this Wednesday! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: Thank God the breath of life is still flowing through me on this Wednesday! I am halfway home. My hands are fixed securely on the plough, and I’m not turning back. I’m not looking back at the past, not focusing on what has gone before. But my eyes are fixed straight ahead; straight ahead to a glorious future with Jesus. Glory Hallelujah!’ 

Oh yes mih people, if we stick to Christ like white on rice, (smile) and endure to the end, then the future will indeed be unimaginably glorious! Much LOVE!

…God ALWAYS gives us the grace…the spiritual power…to do whatever He asks of us…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 23 August 2014 Proverbs 25:27

Proverbs 25:27.   It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search (seek) their own glory is not glory. 

Oh Friends, life’s definitely interesting and amusing yes! And sometimes we need to laugh at it and also take it with a grain of salt. What sparked my enthusiasm today was a quote from one of my daily devotionals. This quote is attributed to one Sydney Smith, but when I tried to find out about him, I discovered that there were several people by that name, including a couple of women.
 
Anyway, I believe they are referring to an English clergyman, wit and writer who lived between 1771 and 1845. The quote states: ‘I have gout, asthma and seven other maladies, but am otherwise well.’
 
That had me laughing because it reminded me of myself. I have numerous maladies myself, but other than that, I’m very well. Hn, hn! It’s like sometimes when I’m asked, ‘How are you?’ I reply, ‘My body’s a mess, but my soul’s in beautiful shape!’ And that’s often the truth.
 
At those times I’m reminded of the old hymn: ‘When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.’
 
Yes my people, that’s how we need to be, regardless of the trials and tribulations we’re going through. No, it’s not always easy, but as true believers in Jesus, we are required to stand strong and persevere.
 
That reminds me of Bruh Paul’s situation. ‘And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet (beat) me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought (pleaded with) the Lord thrice (three times), that it might depart from me.
 
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength (power) is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities (weaknesses) that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, than am I strong.’ (2 Cor.12:7-10)  
 
Yes my brethren, in our weakness, God’s strength and majesty are magnified! So much so, that nowadays when some malady, old or new bothers me, I ask the Lord to help me with them, but I don’t keep harping on it, because I’ve learned from hard experience that some things you just need to go through, and in His own time, He will solve the problem(s) one way or another.
 
Now I merely ask Him for the strength to keep on keeping on, while I’m undergoing whatever ailment is then affecting me. It glorifies God when we continue doing what we ought, while undergoing suffering and rough times.
 
That brings us to our Bit, which is tied up to a certain extent with what we’ve already been talking about. ‘It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search (seek) their own glory is not glory.’
 
Rather true and wise words from Cousin Sol!  Too much honey, or today we’d say sugar, is definitely not good for us, neither is too much boasting or self-promotion. As the old people would say; we’re not supposed to blow our own horn.
 
And as Bruh Paul wrote to the Corinthians, re his spiritual authority: ‘For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.’ (2 Cor. 10:12)
 
Yeh Friends, we’re not supposed to measure and compare ourselves to and by others, for that will only get us in serious trouble. In fact we should not boast of our accomplishments at all!
 
Listen to Cousin Sol as he opens Proverbs 27 by staunchly declaring: ‘Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.’ (Prov.27:1-2)
 
Unfortunately though my fellow believers, our current world is one that glorifies boasting. And the sad fact is that our standards are set so low now, that any run of the mill, mediocre accomplishment a few decades ago, are now seen as great stuff. Everybody is an expert, a superstar, or some high flying personality… that is until their Achilles heel is exposed, and they are unseemingly toppled from their haughty pedestal. 
 
Oh my brethren, we all do some things fairly well, but we also do other things poorly. So there’s no need to boast about our doings, especially when whatever we excel at is basically through the workings of Almighty God, through the skills with which He’s endowed and blessed us with.
 
That’s why Bruh Paul said to the Corinthians: ‘But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.’ (2 Cor.10:17-18) And that’s the gospel truth my people!
 
And we’ll end with some important info from the scholars on the subject. ’10:17-18. Lest the Corinthians interpret what Paul has to say as an expression of conceit, Paul shows that, in the final analysis, his commendation comes from Christ. Paul was always careful to show that any success he enjoyed in the ministry was not due to his own innate ability, but to Christ working in him.’ (cf. Rom. 15:17-18).’
 
That’s more gospel truth Friends! So please, in all our doings, let’s not try to take the praise and glory that truly belongs God, for remember these specific words out of the mouth of His servant Isaiah: ‘I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.’ (Is.42:8) 
 
That says it all my fellow believers! So let’s ponder our own glorying today, and if necessary bring it into alignment with God’s Word, through His help obviously. That’s wisdom of the wisest kind! (smile) Much LOVE!
 
…to boast, to boast, and yet to boast…not of myself or of my doings…but of the majesty and glory of Jehovah God…

 

 

 

Today’s Scrip-Bit 21 June 2013 Psalm 73:1

Psalm 73:1.    Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean (pure) heart.
 
‘Oh Friends, is it really Friday already?’ I foolishly ask.
 
And my Friends shout back, ‘Yes it’s really Friday already! Praise the Lord!’
 
‘But how come it come around so quickly this week eh?’ I continued, somewhat perplexed. ‘But wasn’t it just Monday?’
 
‘Look nuh,’ my wonderful Friends replied, getting a tad disgruntled, ‘we don’t care how quickly it seems to come around to you nuh! We’re just glad that it come around, and we could shout and sing, ‘TGIF! Thank God is Friday, and the weekend’s here!’
 
All I could do at being told in no uncertain terms of their one desire was laugh and say, ‘Okay pardners, whatever you say.’
 
But they insisted on having the last word. ‘Yes, mih brother, whatever we say goes! Remember that eh.’
 
And we all burst out into big peals of laughter at our foolishness. But my people, laughter is indeed good for the soul. It’s a wonderful elixir that’s not only free, but also available all the time, any time at all. And some, or rather plenty of our Christian brothers and sisters should try using it more often, and leave their sour, very unChristian-like countenances behind.
 
And now that we’ve gotten some levity in our spirits, let’s chant our Friday Chant with much sincerity nuh. ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through another week of work! It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through.
 
Now, please help me to get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that I can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out and do it all over again next week, furthering your glorious kingdom with each step I take. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.’
 
Now that ought to keep us somewhat on the straight and narrow this weekend. (smile) And we’d better not stray, because as our Bit so wisely advises us: ‘Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean (pure) heart.’
 
Yes Friends, our God is indeed good to those whose hearts are clean and pure, that are set on Him and His righteousness, not on the wickedness of the world. And we have a classic example of that particular problem as the psalmist Asaph declares in his psalm, re the mystery of prosperous wickedness.
 
‘But as for me, my feet were almost gone (I almost stumbled); my steps had well-nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish (boastful), when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands (pangs or pain) in their death: but their strength is firm.
 
They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain (serves as a necklace); violence covereth them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness (bulge with abundance): they have more than heart could wish.’ (Ps.73:2-7)
 
Oh my people, that’s a very true picture of how the wicked look and how they operate! And yuh know what? When we see them driving their fancy, expensive cars, living in their big mansions, while eating and drinking of the best of everything, wearing designer duds, and showing off about it too, we often feel envious, especially if we’re have a hard time simply making two ends meet.
 
That’s what happened to Asaph. He was on the verge of falling, of losing his faith, when luckily he woke up to the reality of the situation. And how did he do that? ‘Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.’ (Ps.73:17)
 
As the scholars put it: ‘Not until the psalmist entered God’s sanctuary and received a divine perspective on the wicked’s prosperity did he find his answer to the problem (vv. 17-28) He saw the destiny of the wicked (vv. 17-20); therefore he repented of his foolishness (vv.21-22) and found his happiness solely in a warm and growing relationship with God (vv. 23-28)
 
The point of the psalm is driven home even more dramatically when remembering that Asaph, the author, was a spiritual man who grew up with deeply religious training. (1 Chr.15:16-19; 16:4-7; 2 Chr.5:12; 29-30)’ 
 
Oh Friends, I know it’s hard to just grin and bear the blatant extravagance and boasting of the wicked. Yuh see even the deeply religious and spiritual man Asaph had a hard time not falling into Lucifer’s sinful trap. But please note how he got out of it; by going to the Lord’s sanctuary and immersing himself in the Word and finally realizing the destructive end of the wicked.
 
‘For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee (who are unfaithful to thee).’ (Ps.73:27)
 
And that’s the gospel truth Friends! So please stand strong and not let envy and jealousy of the evildoers cause you to stumble and fall, for our wonderful God has promised so much more to those who wait on Him.
 
Listen to how the palmist puts it in Psalm 130, superscripted, My soul waiteth for the Lord. ‘If thou Lord, shouldest mark (take note of) iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared (reverenced with awe).
 
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say more than they that watch for the morning.’ (Ps.130:3-6)
 
Now that’s how we should behave my brethren! Watch and wait for the Lord with hungry hope and heart-filled faith! Let the wicked enjoy their earthly benefits, which will perish with them. Let’s say like Bruh David in Psalm 86, titled, ‘Teach me thy way, O Lord.’
 
He solemnly declares: ‘Rejoice (make glad) the soul of thy servant: for unto thee O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.’ (Ps.86:4-5)
 
That’s definitely, undeniable, irrevocable, everlasting truth my people!
 
So please, let’s not allow the flimsy and flashy baubles and bangles of the world to excite our sinful flesh and tear us away from what is true and full of substance; the Lord God Jehovah and His Word. If we stand strong, in due time we’ll be even better rewarded than the wicked, and with everlasting rewards too. 
 
Now let’s go out with the wisest words that Asaph wrote in Psalm 73: ‘But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.’ (Ps.73:28)
 
And all God’s people gave a joyous shout of ‘Praise the Lord! Amen!’ Much LOVE my fellow believers in Christ!
 
…when Lucifer tries to control out lustful eyes…that’s the time to give Jesus full control of our faith filled hearts…

1 Corinthians 5:6.     Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
 
Oh Friends, the human mind is really something else yes! It’s possibly God’s greatest invention, and something I doubt man will ever be able to fully replicate, like he does other body parts. Anyway, I’m mentioning this because I just remembered looking through my bedroom window a few days ago and seeing the bright sunshine, and my mind, on its own accord, just began singing that old Nat Cole song: ‘Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Those days of soda and pretzels and beer. Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. You wish that summer could always be here.’ And that’s a fact Friends! The four seasons can be interesting, but they can also be very tiresome and breed unhealthy lethargy in all aspects of our lives. And though I don’t particularly like any of the above named foods, I guess my spirit was just announcing its hunger for summer, after a long, tiring, inconsistent autumn, winter and spring. No doubt a lot of people who live under those four seasons feel the same way, for although we can adapt to whatever we have to, mankind definitely wasn’t made to live under such harsh and rigid conditions. The only solution to that though, is to move to somewhere that summer exists year round, which again is easier said than done. Therefore, I’ll just shut up, grin and bear it, till whenever summer chooses to arrive. (smile) And on that note of realism, let’s get into our Bit: ‘Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?’ Both statements are truth in spades, my people! We saw that in the first part; ‘Your glorying is not good.’ when we looked at it yesterday and discovered that glorying in man, and not God, is possibly the worst mistake we can ever make, since it implies that God is of little or no authority or consequence in our lives. When we make sinful, unworthy men and dead, unable to do anything idols our priorities, then we’re breaking the first commandment. ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me.’ (Ex.20:3) That will surely draw the Lord’s wrath! Today we’ll see the same undeniable truth that lies within the second half of our Bit; ‘Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?’ And all that’s saying in simple, everyday terms is that one bad apple can spoil an entire barrel. Or as the scholars put it: ‘Even a little sin has a corrupting influence in the life of the saved or the lost.’ In today’s language, ‘leaven’ would most likely be translated as yeast. And we all know from hard experience that if the yeast has any impurities or imperfections, it can cause the bread or whatever we’re baking, to not rise properly or not turn out to our satisfaction. The same thing goes for sin, my people. A little of it can spoil all the good things or persons it comes into contact with. Remember the saying, show me your friends and I’ll tell you, who or what you are? That’s because those you hang out with usually behave like you, and furthermore can easily influence your behaviour. That reminds me of one person whom my mother did not want me to associate with, because they tended to lead me astray. And I’m sure most of us can identify with that scenario. The truth though, is that usually the more we’re told not to associate with certain people, the more we gravitate towards them, whether it’s just through stubborn rebellion to our parent’s wishes, or the person just has a natural charisma that draws us to them. Oh Friends, that bad peer influence is rife amongst today’s youth, what with the great peer pressure that’s currently in vogue, and the lack of a strong godly influence, strong morals and self confidence in our young people. It’s much more prevalent than in our time. Bruh Paul also reminded the Galatians of sin’s corrupting influence. ‘A little leaven (false doctrine) leaveneth (permeates, corrupts) the whole lump (church).’ (Gal.5:9) That’s also happening much more than is necessary in today’s churches too my brethren, with busy-body individuals or little cliques creating turmoil and dissension in Christ’s body. My fellow believers, there’s only one piece of scripture that I can quote as an antidote, or preferably as a preventative measure to all that. ‘For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through (in) Jesus Christ our Lord.’ (Rom.6:23) Yes my brethren, death is what we deserve for our sinful behaviour, but instead, through God’s great mercy and unmerited favour, we are offered salvation and eternal life through Jesus Christ. Please, I’m imploring us today, right now, to get wise, since time’s running out, and choose the latter option, for the former is truly terrible, with eternal separation from Almighty God as its just dessert. So please let wisdom abound in our lives today nuh. Much LOVE!…I choose Jesus…I choose Jesus…because His selfless sacrifice on the cross…provided salvation and eternal life…for a worthless sinner like me…

1 Corinthians 5:6.     Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
 
‘Morning neighbuh!’ the older lady greets her younger counterpart as they both come down their back steps to begin their morning chores. ‘How yuh doing today, Miss Louise?’ the younger woman enquires, watching her neighbour navigate around the cluttered yard with her cane. ‘Not too bad nuh mih chile,’ the older lady replies. ‘The arthritis and all the other aches and pains in mih body acting up this morning, but with God’s help, ah bearing them.’ ‘Ah know how it is yes, Miss Louise. My mother had all them same aches and pains too.’ The older woman then breaks out in a toothless grin, as she declares. ‘But though mih body old and mash up, not a thing wrong with mih spirit nuh! As the ole Negro spiritual says, mih chile: ‘It is well with my soul!’  ‘And I can only say Amen to that!’ the younger woman says. Then after a moment’s hesitation, she continues: ‘Ah sure hope when I reach your age, I’ll be as strong in body, mind and spirit like you yes Miss Louise.’ The older woman gets serious, shakes her head and replies. ‘Is only one way to do that yes mih child. You have to start doing it from young; start eating right, thinking right, and doing right from now. And you can only do that if yuh living right with God!’ And therein lies the basis of most of our world’s problems my Friends! We’re not doing any of those four things properly. Obesity has become the most recent scourge of our society. We’re eating way too much fattening and non-nutritional foods with all sorts of harmful additives, and not exercising sufficiently. Plus, with all the modern conveniences available, we don’t really need to put out much physical energy to live in our comfortable surroundings. And sadly, the recent computer madness has just made us even more comatose. Unfortunately though, while one comparatively small part of the population is eating too much and exercising too little, the majority doesn’t have enough to eat and many are dying of starvation in a world of plenty. How sad mih people! And to further complicate our problems, we’re not thinking right or doing right either, because we’re mostly concerned with ourselves. Selfishness, greed, immorality and corruption are the hallmarks of our world today. Basically, the cult of I, Me and Mine rules the universe these days. And that obviously doesn’t sit well with the Lord God Jehovah, which just cements the fact that we’re not doing well with Him either. So when we’re falling down on all fronts, how can our world prosper, eh mih breddren? That’s why in talking about their moral standards, Bruh Paul wisely informs the Corinthians in our Bit: ‘Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?’ And isn’t that the gospel truth? It sure is! The biggest mistake we can make is glorying in ourselves and mankind, for that’s a major no-no with our heavenly Father, because that means we’re not taking Him seriously, not giving Him priority in our lives. And if we don’t give proper reverence and respect to our Creator, Controller and Provider, what do we expect eh? Nothing but disaster! As Bruh Paul tells the folks at Corinth earlier on: ‘Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world (age), let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in his own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain (futile). Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours. Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.’ (1 Cor.3:18-23) And all God’s people declared a rousing ‘Amen!’ But we’re still behaving like the Corinthians, as the scholars explain. ‘For all things are yours: The one who belongs to Christ is a child of God, and his Father will do anything for him. The absurdity of their division over allegiances to any of these men (Bruh Paul, Cephas and Apollos) is that God gave them “all” to the Corinthians.’ Yes my brethren, until we start glorying in God and not making our allegiances to men more important, our world will continue to be a mess, undergoing one disaster after another, both man-made and God sent. But somehow we can’t seem to get that through our thick skulls, and the powers that be are fully bent on the evil intent of taking God out of our society and have us worship the foolish fallen angel Lucifer. That’s a sure recipe for destruction my people. Cousin Sol warns us so many times and so many different ways in Proverbs, but we still refuse to listen. And to end, we’ll quote the most well known of his warnings. ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct (make straight or smooth) thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel (body), and marrow (strength) to thy bones.’ (Prov.3:5-8)That says it all Friends. So please, let’s wake up from our foolish slumber and pay attention nuh. That’s wisdom at its highest. More on the other part of our Bit tomorrow, the Lord in favour. Till then, may the Lord bless us and give us wisdom to follow His Word, so that we can do right down here on earth. 1 Corinthians 1:29.       That no flesh should glory in his presence.

Oh Friends, once again a beautiful day is dawning and the many parcels of mercies and blessings are being prepared by the heavenly hosts for distribution down here on earth, as they do on a daily basis. How lucky – no, lucky is not the right word. How privileged we are to worship such a kind, LOVING and generous Deity! Who, instead of giving us our just deserts for our sinful nature, capital punishment, gives us mercy. And on top of that, He then gives us more of what we don’t deserve; His wonderful, refreshing, revitalizing grace. Mama Mia! That ought to just warm the cockles of our hearts to the extent that it causes us to cry out in pure unadulterated joy: ‘Oh thank You Lord! Thank You for Your mercy and grace! Thank You for LOVING us so much, that You broke Your own heart by sacrificing your only Son Jesus to save us from death and eternal damnation! We LOVE You Lord with all our heart, and promise to sincerely serve You until eternity! Amen.’ Yes Friends, that’s the kind of emotion God’s goodness ought to stir up in our hearts, minds and souls. And talking about God sacrificing His only Son Jesus for us, a bunch of unworthy sinners, reminds me of something I had planned to share before this, but either forgot, or the Lord didn’t deem it suitable until now. And I’m talking about the hour I spent alone in the candle-lit church on Holy Thursday night pondering the actions of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. At one point during that fateful hour, it suddenly occurred to me that we were all so worried and heartbroken over Jesus demise and the terror that ran through His disciples and followers at His trial and eventual crucifixion, that we’ve conveniently forgotten the most heartbroken of all the players on that tragic stage – God, the Father. Remember He’s a living being, and if we’re made in His image, then He must have feelings like us too. So put yourself in His place: You have sinful, unfaithful creations that you don’t want to lose, but because of your sense of justice and righteousness, you just can’t wipe clean their sinful slate, for you have already decreed that the wages of sin is death. You find yourself in a conflict of interest with your holy, righteous self, between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The only way to save the lost souls and justify your sense of justice, is to find a sacrifice worthy enough to pay the price. Unfortunately it has to be an unblemished, sinless soul. And the only one fitting that characteristic beside yourself, is your only Son, Jesus. Can you imagine how the Lord must have agonized over the situation? I don’t know if I could have willingly sacrificed my beautiful, obedient son for a bunch of ungrateful jerks nuh. Ponder that situation for a moment nuh people. But I guess that’s why He is God; His thoughts, ways and actions are much higher than ours, absolutely incomprehensible to our small, feeble minds. Just imagine how the Father mush have felt, having to lay the excessive weight of sin on Jesus’ innocent shoulders, then create the separation necessary between them, the first ever in all their days together, so that His awesome, mind boggling plan could come to fruition. And Jesus only increased His heartache by obediently going along with the plan. Ah mih people, we really and truly do serve a most excellent and incomparable God yes! And then to make matters worse, after suffering so much heartache so that we could get a second chance, we become even more sinful and disobedient, heaping abuse, doubt and ridicule on the Sacrificial Lamb and all He stands for. Oh Friends, I know that I would have been very upset by that ungodly behaviour and prone to revoking everything. But fortunately our God is a much bigger Being than that, with a heart of solid gold, so He perseveres with us. We just don’t understand, are unable to comprehend His ways, His motivation for doing what He does. No wonder the Good Book tells us: ‘But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound (put to shame) the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound (put to shame) the things which are mighty; And base (insignificant) things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought (nothing) things that are:’ (1 Cor.1:27-28)  Yes Friends, we see that eccentricity of God all through the Good Book, and right down through the ages, even till today. And I’m a perfect example of that. (smile) The people whom God chooses to do His work are the most unlikely ones, the ones whom the world would never choose. Why is that eh? Our Bit gives us the answer: ‘That no flesh should glory in his presence.’ Words of absolute truth and wisdom on God’s part my brethren! Man would not be able to indulge in one of his favourite pastimes – boasting! And Bruh Paul continues: ‘But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us (became for us) wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.’ (1 Cor.1:30-31) What amazing wisdom and glorious truth, my fellow believers in Jesus Christ! Now here’s some enlightenment on that last scripture from the scholars. ‘Of him (because of the Father’s work) are ye in (intimate with) Christ Jesus: Paul concludes that all the riches of salvation exist in Christ Jesus. All that the Corinthian believers are, they owe to Him. Thus it is not in oneself, or in party alignment, or in supposed human ability that any believer ought to glory. Paul tabulates the qualities that belong to the believer in Christ. Wisdom is not merely the acquisition of intellectual skills but the gaining of spiritual discernment based on the wisdom of God as demonstrated in the cross. Righteousness is a legal concept and has in mind the righteousness that is applied to the believer’s account the moment he believes. (Rom.5) Sanctification has already been mentioned in verse 2, “sanctified in Christ Jesus” This contemplates the work of Christ “in” the believer, as opposed to that which He does “for” the believer in justification. Redemption underlies all the above. Christ’s redemptive work opened the way for God to extend His grace to sinful man and to pour out upon him such benefits as wisdom, righteousness, and sanctification.’ And on that note of enlightenment, we’ll end this session. We have enough to ponder on for today.    Selah. More on this topic tomorrow, God in favour. Till then Friends, let’s walk hand in hand with the Lord, so that He might continue to bless, comfort and keep us safe. Today’s Scrip-Bit 10 January 2013 Proverbs 27:2

Proverbs 27:2.     Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

Oh Friends, this is the day the Lord has made, let us all rejoice and be glad in it nuh, as our Saviour Jesus Christ taught us! And all God’s children declared a loud and joyful: ‘All thanks and praise be to our heavenly Father, who created us, LOVES us unconditionally, and has prepared a resting place in heaven for us, after the trials and tribulations of this earth!’ Yes Friends, as believers we’re called to be truly grateful for all our great God has done, is doing, and will do for us. However, some of us, in our misguided attitudes, believe that we are masters of our own fate, and having done some extraordinary deed, and even sometimes nothing remarkable at all, insist on beating our chests in pride, arrogance and boastfulness. But my people that’s one of the worst things we can ever do, for our God despises the sin of pride and arrogance possibly more than anything else, because that makes Him unnecessary and unwanted in our lives. And the wise words of Cousin Sol in our Bit today, clearly warn us of that serious shortcoming. ‘Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.’ Ah my brethren, that’s a form of humility, which we as believers are expected to embrace, but unfortunately that word ‘humility’ and the resultant behaviour or attitude don’t hold much water in today’s society, where it’s about blowing our own horn, our own trumpet, boasting about our accomplishments and/or possessions. And as we all know, the Good Book is filled with passages that decry such behaviour, as one that doesn’t sit well in God’s sight. Let’s look at some of those scriptures, starting with Psalm 101, Bruh David talking about a commitment to holy living: ‘Whoso privily (secretly) slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off (destroy); him that hath a high look and a proud heart will not I suffer (endure).’ (Ps.101:5) Now let’s turn to Cousin Sol, for he mentions the abhorred attitude several times in Proverbs, and if he didn’t consider it important, I doubt he would have spoken about it so often. In this first passage, he comes around the subject from a different angle. ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not on unto thine own understanding.’ (Prov.3:5) Now that’s where all the proud, arrogant and boastful fall down; they end up trusting in their own understanding. Then he talks about the seven deadly sins which are an abomination to the Lord. And you know what’s the first? ‘A proud look…’ (Prov.6:17) Yes Friends, a haughty look is certainly distasteful to our God! And in Proverbs 8; wisdom is everlasting, Cousin Sol declares: ‘The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy and the evil way, and the froward (perverse) mouth, do I hate.’ (Prov.8:13) Meanwhile, in Proverbs 16, he solemnly proclaims: ‘Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.’ (Prov.16:5) Oh Friends, that’s gospel truth without a doubt! And moving on to Proverbs 25, we hear him declare: ‘It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search (seek) their own glory is not glory.’ (Prov.25:27) And isn’t that a fact people! If we seek and declare our own glory, then it’s not real glory, for glory is something that is heaped on us by others, not by our own selves. The dictionary describes ‘glory’ as ‘exalted renown, honourable fame, special distinction, adoring praise and thanksgiving.’ Those are all things which can only be truly worthwhile when others give them to us. And if you don’t believe Bruh David and Cousin Sol, then listen to Isaiah. Here he speaks about the day of the Lord. ‘The lofty (proud) looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up, and he shall be brought low.’ (Is.2:11-12) Oh Friends, it couldn’t be any clearer than that! And we’ll close with another passage from Isaiah, re the woes pronounced on the faithless. ‘And the mean man (people) shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled. But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgement, and God that is holy shall be sanctified (hallowed) in righteousness.’ (Is.5:15-16) Now my fellow believers, having heard the negative consequences of being filled with foolish pride, arrogance and boastful behaviour, I surely hope that we will tone down, if not completely disavow our own proud, arrogant and boastful attitudes, because NOTHING we do, comes from our own strength and wisdom, but is always enabled by that of our Creator, our omnipotent God and LOVING, merciful, forgiving Heavenly Father. So let’s take in front, before in front takes us nuh. (smile) That’s the wisdom of the ages. Much LOVE!…the world’s wisdom beats its chest and says…I am great…but heavenly wisdom teaches humility and declares…GOD is great…
