Isaiah 40:11. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
Ah mih people, it’s Wednesday – we halfway home! So please hang in there, faithful and steadfast, knowing that all things work together for good to all those who LOVE God and are called by Him for His purpose. (Rom.8:28) That’s a wonderful scripture to hold on to this morning my brethren.
And all God’s people joyfully declared: ‘Praise the Lord! This is the day the day Lord has made, we WILL rejoice and be glad in it!’ Way to go my fellow believers!
Now here’s an interesting quote from Israel Salanter Lipkin (1810-1883), the famous Lithuanian Rabbi and revolutionary philosopher. He says: ‘Spirituality is like a bird: if you hold on to it tightly, it chokes, and if you hold it loosely, it escapes.’
And that my people, is not only true of our spirituality, but also a number of other things in life. If we hold on to them too tightly, we extinguish their lifeblood, and if we are too lax and wishy washy with them, they just float away from us.
We constantly see it in friendships, in LOVE, in parenting children, in managing people in the workplace, in all walks of life. That means we need to exhibit some semblance of balance in our lives. Don’t hold on to things or people too tightly – read control (smile) or they are likely to rebel.
Neither should we take them too much for granted, or we’re liable to lose them too. So it’s essential that we don’t tip the scales on either side. The same thing goes for our spiritual development.
As the One More Day Devotional from which I got the quote says: ‘When we possessively clutch our faith and expect all that we demand, our spirituality is weakened. Yet if we expect nothing of it, it might seem to disappear.
Our spiritual lives are strengthened as we find that precious balance between expectant trust in our Higher Power and responsible reliance on ourselves.’
And that’s gospel truth! But the problem is trying to strike that right balance in our lives. However, it is not an impossible task if we cling to the Lord God Jehovah as our lifeline, and hold on to the many promises He has made us, none of which He has ever, or will ever renege on.
And I definitely like the promise in our Bit: ‘He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.’
Oh my brethren, what wonderful imagery, what a beautiful pastoral scene it paints; depicting Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour just gently and wisely leading and guiding us, like a good shepherd takes care of his sheep, like a mother hen takes care of her chicks, generally speaking, like the female of the species looks after the young ones in her brood.
Some of us might not know the duties of a shepherd, but it’s basically to look after his flock in all aspects of their lives; be it leading them to green and plentiful grass and wholesome water to drink, taking care of them in sickness, seeking them out when they’re lost… whatever it takes to maintain the peace, calm and prosperity of the flock.
And wonder of wonders my people, that’s exactly how our great and wonderful God looks after us when we surrender our lives, our struggles to Him!
Now let’s look at some scriptures where the Lord is referred to as our Shepherd. Jeremiah, in his prophecy of the remnant of God’s people one day triumphantly returning to Jerusalem, first decries the leaders of Israel. ‘Woe be unto the pastors (shepherds, leaders) that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord.
Therefore, thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors (shepherds, leaders) that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited (attended to) them: behold I will visit upon you (attend to you for) the evil of your doings, saith the Lord.’ (Jer.23:1-2)
Yes Friends, in due time the Lord will get rid of the woeful and wicked pastors and leaders who are leading His people astray and replace them with righteous and responsible ones.
And then the eventual Good Shepherd will come. ‘Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper (act wisely), and shall execute judgement and justice (justice and righteousness) in the earth (land). (Jer.23:5)
And that promise was fulfilled my people when Jesus came to earth as a man and blossomed in all His spiritual glory! Wow! What a faithful and trustworthy God we serve and worship!
And all God’s people joyfully declared: ‘Thank you Lord! We praise you and bless your holy name!’
And the prophet Ezekiel tells us thus of the Lord’s care for His flock. ‘Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle (sheep) and cattle (sheep).
And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it.’ (Ezek.34:22-24)
Yes Friends, that’s the magnificent and majestic God we worship, making everlasting plans for our protection and provision!
And we’ll close with this appropriate benediction from Hebrews. ‘Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect (complete) in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.’ (Heb.13:20-21)
Now Friends, as we go about our busy lives today, let’s hold on to all that our God has promised, so that we can have peace and good success, despite all the troubles crazily swirling around us, for that is indeed wisdom from on high! Much LOVE!
…and ye my flock…the flock of my pasture…are men…and I am your God…saith the Lord God… (Ezek.35:31)

Proverbs 3:6. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct (make smooth or straight) thy paths.
Oh Friends, it’s Tuesday, and the living is a tad difficult! (smile) Yes, on this wet summer’s morn, the ole back’s a aching, because I lay in bed too long. I refused to get up when the Lord first called.
But how can a body be expected to get up so early in the morning with the very mellow, soothing sounds of a gentle rain, a veritable lullaby (smile) falling outside one’s open window eh?
Chuh! It’s just not fair! No, it truly is not. But whoever said that life was fair eh? There is a price to pay for all our selfish indulgences. However, please remember that despite the unfairness of life, our great God is GOOD!
All praise and thanks be to Him, who willingly sacrificed His ONLY Son, Jesus Christ to pay for our heinous sins! That’s how much He LOVED us back then, and still does to this very day!
Sadly though, we don’t return that LOVE near as much as we should. And that, my brethren, is something we ought to work hard on correcting. Why? Because not LOVING our wonderful God, as we should, is only causing us unnecessary stress and strain, and even great harm.
That’s why I want to continue with our Bit from yesterday; the everlasting wise words of Cousin Sol: ‘In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct (make straight or smooth) thy paths.’ What awesome wisdom Friends!
And there was no one who understood those words better than Cousin Sol, because those wise sentiments were first instilled in him by his father Bruh David, when he passed on the throne of Israel. Bruh David was able to do that because he himself had experienced the goodness and faithfulness of God throughout his own life.
Now hear Bruh David’s words to Cousin Sol, as he encourages him to build the temple of God. And please note that this was in front of all the people of Israel.
‘And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect (loyal) heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. Take heed now, for the Lord hath chosen thee to build a house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it.’ (1 Chr.28:9-10)
Oh Friends, are we instructing our children and grand children in like manner? I certainly hope so. Although it doesn’t seem so, since this young generation appears to have no reverence or time for the things of God, but are truly fascinated and deeply involved in the harmful things of the world.
And if that’s so, then we the parents are the ones to blame. I heard somebody say recently that our generation is trying so hard to provide the things we didn’t have for our children, that we have no time to teach or provide them with the things that we did and still do have.
And that’s gospel truth my people! We put so much effort into getting them the unimportant things of this world, that we have no time left, and apparently inclination too, to instruct then in the things of God. How sad my brethren…
Now here is an interesting note from the scholars re Bruh David’s encouragement to Cousin Sol. ’28:9-10. Although David’s charge to Solomon that he serve…the Lord with a perfect heart (cf. Matt.5:48) and a willing mind (cf. Ex.35:21,29) was directed primarily at his son, his point was doubtless not lost on the assembled congregation (cf.29:9).’
And that’s very true, for 29:9 says: ‘Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect (loyal) heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.’ (1 Chr.29:9)
Yes my fellow believers, the people gave willingly towards building God’s sanctuary. I wish we could day that about today’s believers, because getting anything from too many of us to do the Lord’s work is like pulling teeth without anesthetic.
But those are the same ones who expect to see the Lord’s work done with the necessary pomp and ceremony and honour and glory. Ah Lord eh! But that’s another sermon for another day. (smile)
And now we’ll close with the wisdom and reverence that Cousin Sol showed after Bruh David so wisely instructed him in the ways of God. ‘In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast showed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead (be king in his place).
Now, O Lord God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like dust of the earth in multitude (as numerous as the dust of the earth). Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.’ (2 Chr. 1:7-12)
Oh Friends, neighbours, fellow believers, unbelievers, of whatever faith or non-faith you are, yuh see how our great God deals with those who come to him with humility and reverence, knowing that they can do nothing of any great magnitude without Him, but in and through His great mercy, LOVE and power, ALL things are possible!
And all God’s people gave a joyous shout of: ‘Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Praise His awesome and glorious Name!’
Now my brethren, since we’re still alive, it means we still have hope. So please, for our children’s sake, let’s all try to undo the wrong we’ve so foolishly done them nuh, and instead imbue them with the wisdom of reverence and faithfulness due to Almighty God. It’s still possible with the Lord’s help. Much LOVE!

Luke 19:10. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Oh Friends, at long last it seems we’ll be getting a short reprieve from the bitterly cold day time temperatures we’ve been having. Thank the Lord! Our temps are supposed to rise above the freezing mark, be on the plus side for the first time in what seems like ages.
But even that good news of a few days of warmer, no less cold temps, is fraught with danger, as there are warnings of heavy rainfall in the offing, and combined with melting snow, flooding is a serious possibility. Ah Lord eh! It seems that our weather no longer goes about its business smoothly and with some conformity to what we expect, but is just jumping here there and everywhere, as it pleases.
Just look at the recent terrible and highly abnormal snowstorms in the U.S, and the disastrous flooding over the pond in Britain, where some places have been under water since early December. Mama Mia! And we’ve already had our big ice storms and heavy snowfall, so all in all it has been a winter of much precipitation, and there’s still a few weeks of it left to endure.
And if, as it’s widely believed, that our actions are mostly to blame for the greatly fluctuating and unpredictable weather patterns, then all we can do right now is grin and bear it.
But I also have some great news my people; we don’t have to bear it alone, for Jesus is here to help us do so! In the first place, as He says in our Bit: ‘For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.’ And we were definitely lost in a world of darkness before His coming.
But even after saving us there, He still holds out to us the Great Invitation: ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of (from) me; for I am meek and lowly in heart (gentle and humble): and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ (Matt.11:28-30)
What truthful and highly appreciative words my brethren! And for all those who have not yet availed themselves of that wonderful invitation, I’d strongly advise that you do so as soon as possible, in fact right now, for when you do, you will truly feel as though a great burden has been lifted off your shoulders.
Anyway, let’s turn to the remainder of scriptures which supports Christ’s contention that He came to earth to save us, so that we can finish that topic today. And the first passage comes from Acts, where the apostles are again before the high priest and Jewish Council, for deliberately disobeying the warnings to stop preaching Christ crucified. This, after they had already been incarcerated, warned and set free.
‘Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of those things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.’ (Acts 5:29-32)
Oh Friends, that’s the testimony of Jesus’ disciples! It must have taken a lot of guts to get up before the Jewish rulers and speak so disdainfully of them, but they could not have denied the things they saw and experienced in the company of Jesus. And on their truth, we can base our faith without fear, and with awesome trust.
Now hear Bruh Paul, later on when Barnabas and himself were at Antioch. He’s talking about how Israel moved from being ruled by judges to kings. ‘And afterward they (the Israelites) desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of (for) forty years.
And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will. Of this man’s seed (descendants) hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus.’ (Acts 13:21-23)
Oh my fellow believers, there can be no doubt re that line of reasoning, for it’s all recorded right there in the Good Book!
And we’ll end there for today, since inclusion of the other scriptures will definitely make the Bit too long, and I do have a sincere appreciation for your busy lives. (smile)
But please, let’s ponder, consider and meditate upon all that we’ve said today, then with God’s help, let’s try to bring our lives into obedience with His will, for that’s wisdom at its zenith. Much LOVE!

Psalm 5:3. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
Oh Friends, once again we have been blessed with God’s wonderful grace, enabling us to see another new day on His great planet earth! Wow! How thrilling that is!
And I know that you all will agree with me, for despite all the problems in the troubled world and our individual lives, very few really are ready to leave here and go over to the other side. There’s something about earth, with all its faults and foibles that still holds us captive.
Perhaps it’s simply because we know what’s here, but aren’t truly sure about what’s on the other side, although they claim it’s much better there.
In any case, since we’re here, and most likely want to be, let’s be happy, and like the psalmist, joyfully declare: ‘This is the day which the Lord hath made; we WILL rejoice and be glad in it.’ (Ps.118:24) That positive attitude certainly helps more than a negative, sorrowful, poor-me-one behaviour.
Oh by the way, a service man did come yesterday to look at our freezer problem, at an exorbitant service charge. Hn!
Apparently there’s a small plastic cup – no surprise there, for everything’s plastic now – where the water runs through to the icemaker. But whenever that cup gets clogged with ice, and the icemaker calls for water, the water cannot run into the cup and into the icemaker. So as water is wont to do, it finds other channels to run into.
Consequently, by the time he checked it yesterday, everything was clear and free, and the only thing we can do is keep a close eye on it, because there’s no finding out why it happens. Ah Lord eh! And last night we had to turn off the icemaker because the bucket was already full of ice.
And the techie agreed with my contention that the earlier appliances worked much better than these new fangled ones, neither did they have as many complications when something went wrong. Although it gave him more work, he wasn’t thrilled with the new stuff, and suggested that we complain to the manufactures themselves, not to the service people.
But which big manufacturer listens to the small man eh, unless there’s a big ground swell and a serious threat of boycotting their products?
Anyway, that’s enough preamble for today. (smile) Yesterday’s Bit was one of the longest, if not the longest one I’ve ever written, and I promise today’s definitely won’t be as long. So in keeping with that promise let’s get to our Bit from Bruh David’s prayer for protection.
‘My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.’
And I was up early enough today to do my prayer thing and still get the Bit to you at a reasonable hour. Glory Hallelujah! And we’ll continue looking at scriptures that show us the importance of prayer, as well as encourage us to get more involved in it.
And there’s lots of truth in the advice to begin each day with prayer. Bruh David and Daniel (6:10) did it, and in Psalm 88, a Maschil (Contemplation) of Heman the Ezrahite, a cry for deliverance from death, the psalmist also proclaims: ‘But unto thee have I cried, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent (come before) thee.’ (Ps.88:13)
Now we already know that Jesus got up very early every morning to go out into a quiet place and pray. (Mark 1:35) But that wasn’t the only time He availed Himself of the power of prayer. And we have a good example of that after He fed the five thousand, (Matt.14:15-22) and sent His disciples over to the other side of the lake by ship, then went off by Himself to pray.
‘And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart (by Himself) to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.’ (Matt.14:23)
Apparently after using up all that spiritual energy, He needed some recharging of His batteries, some rejuvenation of His Spirit. And believe me Friends, nothing recharges or rejuvenates us like sincere prayer!
Now let’s move on to Bruh Paul. Oh my brethren, I don’t know if anyone has spoken about the importance of prayer more than him! In every epistle he encourages his readers to pray. And his most astounding pronouncement on the subject is simply this: ‘Pray without ceasing.’ (1 Thess.5:17) Plain and straightforward my people!
The scholars dissemble the verse thus: ‘The Greek word here rendered without ceasing is used in secular literature to denote a man suffering from an intermittent cough – one that is not continuous, but occurs at intervals. Just as the individual has the tendency to cough, though does not always do so audibly, so the believer ought to remain in the attitude of prayer though not always praying audibly.’
Therefore Friends, as true believers, we ought always to have that attitude of prayer about us, though not necessarily praying aloud. It’s a most wonderful behaviour to cultivate. And as promised, we won’t ramble on any more today.
But my brethren, that’s only the tip of the iceberg concerning prayer in the Good Book. However we’ll leave you to ponder those few verses today. Don’t want to complicate your busy minds and lives more than they’re already complicated. (smile) .
But please, please, let’s get serious about prayer in this important year of 2014 nuh, both for others and ourselves, because it’s the greatest power on planet earth, when entered into with heartfelt sincerity. Much LOVE!

P.S. Aye mih people, the Bit will most likely be plenty late tomorrow, because I’m going out of town this evening, and I don’t know when I’ll find the time to write it. Joshua 1:8. This book of the law shall not depart out of (shall constantly be in) thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Oh Friends, yesterday I fired a warning shot across our bow, re the old, black, homeless man asking the white Christian one, how Christians can worship a homeless man on Sundays, then turn their backs on the first homeless person they see on Mondays. I have one more shot to fire, so I decided to fire it today.
It’s about the same two men; the black one’s name is Denver Moore, and the white one is Ron Hall. Instead of trying to break it down, I’ll just quote the three paragraphs from the Article ‘Finding our way Home,’ from the August 2013 issue of In Touch Magazine.
Here goes. ‘From Denver, I learned the difference between “blessin” and helping. He once asked why I was always giving out dollar bills to the street people and dishing out spaghetti at the mission. “I like helping the homeless,” I told him.
“Mr. Ron,” he said, “you ain’t helping nobody, All you is doin’ is makin’ yourself feel better about being rich. You is blessin’ folks with your dollars and service, but a dollar bill and a plate of food ain’t changin’ a life. That takes LOVE. If you really serious ’bout helpin’ somebody, crawl down in the ditch with ’em, bandage up their wounds, and stick with ’em until they is strong enough to crawl up your back and get out.”
Denver understood that homelessness isn’t a government problem – it’s a church problem. I don’t know how he knew this, but he told me that there are at least as many (if not more) churches in America than homeless folks on the streets. “If every church would take in just one homeless person, the problem would be solved,” he explained. “I ain’t a very smart man, Mr. Ron, but it seems to me there is too much Bible studying and not enough Bible doing!”
And isn’t that the God awesome truth my Friends! It sure is! Too many of us supposed Christians practice supposed philanthropy merely to make ourselves feel good. We’ve given and we’ve helped and therefore we feel better about ourselves.
But as the man says, a plate of food and a dollar won’t get a body off the streets. We have to do much more, especially in our churches, to help the unfortunates in our society, a group that’s daily growing by leaps and bounds as our societies fall on hard economic times.
And remember too Friends, that though God does appreciate our outward actions of help, He greatly desires that our motives are right, truly from the heart, and not simply for our own selfish purposes. Anyway, that’s my shot of warning across our bow today. Please, let’s contemplate it and see how it reflects on our own lives.

And I can’t point out strongly enough Friends, how important those words are in the life of every believer. Hopefully by now though, their importance should have hit home. Now let’s get to some relevant scripture to support my contention… oh no, it’s not a contention, but an assured fact. And we’re going to begin with Psalm 119, which talks a lot about the statutes etc. of the Lord.
Hear the Psalmist confidently declare: ‘Oh how I LOVE thy law! It is my meditation all the day! Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.’ (Ps.119:97-99)
And again from Psalm 119: ‘I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord: I will keep thy statutes. I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies. I prevented (rose before) the dawning of the morning, and cried (for help): I hoped in thy word. Mine eyes prevent (are awake through) the night watches, that I might meditate on thy word.’ (Ps.119:145-148)
Yes mih people, if we’re not familiar with the Lord’s Word, then our lives will never be as good as they can and ought to be!
Now let’s turn to Psalm 143, ‘Teach me to do thy will,’ and listen to Bruh David pour out his soul to Almighty God. ‘Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate. I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse (ponder) on the work of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.’ (Ps.143:4-6)
Ah Friends, do we cry out to God for help and guidance when our enemies bring us low? I surely hope so, because He’s the ONLY One who can truly help us.
And I have to chuckle here, as I contemplate our next contributor, Bruh Paul. Is there anything that he didn’t have some say on? I doubt it. But here he is talking to Timothy, his young protégé, exhorting him to get into the Word.
‘Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine (teaching). Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery (council of elders).
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly (entirely) to them; that thy profiting (progress) may appear (be evident) to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.’ (1 Tim.4:13-16)
Yes my brethren, all those things still apply to each and every believer today! To truly grow and mature in Christ, we definitely need to read, meditate, practice and exhort others on the Word, so that the body of Christ remains strong and purposeful.
And here’s the scripture that you all have been waiting for. You can’t talk about meditation without mentioning it. I was just saving the best for last. (smile)
Now here are those immortal words of Bruh David: ‘Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength (my rock), and my redeemer.’ (Ps.19:14)
And all God’s people said a loud ‘Amen!’
Now Friends, let’s go out today and allow that verse to be our guide. Let’s try our best to bring it to pass – with God’s help of course. For then will we be truly viewed as wise and righteous – as true believers! Much LOVE!
…whomsoever will be a follower of Jesus…the same must know His Word…and practice it…
