The Necessity for Believers to follow the Example of Jesus in Being Obedient to His Father’s Will!

John 14:11.        Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

And then it was Thursday, the penultimate day of our work week. Thankfully, the snow has stopped falling and the sun is shining but it’s cold. However, we’ll take the cold with the bright shining sun any day though, rather than the white stuff falling from the skies. (smile) And as we move closer to Christmas Day, the preparations are ramping up and getting even more intense. Let’s hope that the thoughts of Christ in our hearts, souls, bodies and minds are also getting more intense, as we look forward to that awesome day when we celebrate His incarnate birth.

How He was born of the virgin Mary, with the Holy Spirit planting the godly seed in Mary’s womb, so He could become human, but not have a human being as his biological father. It was the first step in God’s enormous and awesome plan of salvation for His human creation; Jesus being born sinless, so that He could eventually pay the hefty, soul draining price for our sinfulness.

But He also came to earth to show us what the Father, the God we’d worshipped for so long was really like, not in body, because the Father is a Spirit, but in ways and means, hopefully giving us a better understanding of what He expects from us. Remember Jesus talking to the disciples about His going away, and they claiming to not know where He was going and how. (John 14:3-4).

‘Then Thomas saith unto him, Lord we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh to the Father but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord shew us the Father, and it sufficeth (will satisfy) us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long with you, and yet hast thou not known me Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father: and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself (of my own authority): but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.’ (John 14:5-11)

Yes friends, as Jesus told Philip, when we see Him, we also see the Father, for although they are separate, they are one in certain respects. And I like how this commentary puts it. ‘Jesus asserts his oneness with the Father, indicating they share the same divine essence, emphasizing their unity, divinity, and the Father’s presence in Jesus’ words and works, revealing God’s nature through Him. Jesus acts as the perfect revelation of God; to understand Jesus is to understand God, as God’s character, words, and deeds are fully manifested in Him.’

And that was exactly what Jesus did while living as a human being here on earth; teach us about the ways and character of God, through His works, deeds and words. Remember He said that His words and actions were not from His own authority, but from the Father’s. And throughout His earthly sojourn He made it crystal clear that He was obeying the will of His Father, not His own.

And we see that in verses like these. ‘My meat (food) is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.’ (John 4:34) Then in John 5, Jesus declares: ‘I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just (righteous); because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.’ (John 5:30) And again in John 6, Jesus says; ‘For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.’ (John 6:38)

Ah friends, if there’s one thing Jesus modelled perfectly was obedience. He did nothing without consulting His Father, for it was His will Jesus came to earth to pursue. That’s why Isaiah reminds us: ‘And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.’ (Is. 30:21)

Oh, my fellow believers, the Holy Spirit is trying to lead and guide us in a godly and righteous manner, and how much better off we would all be if we could be even a tad more obedient to the dictates of Jesus, as His followers and ambassadors. For one of our greatest failings is we simply like to go our own way and do our own thing. But please, let’s look at the example Jesus set for us and do our best to follow it nuh. Killing ourselves to acquire the pleasures, wealth and power of the world won’t do us any good when we’re six feet under. But living seriously for Jesus now, will certainly help us in the next life.

And the Father has been so good to us, even to the extent of bestowing undeserved blessings on us to do His earthly work. So why not be wise and live for Him eh? And in keeping with that great idea, (smile) let’s now declare and activate those Thursday Blessings, that we can rise to our calling. As one strong and sincere voice: ‘I declare that I am blessed with God’s supernatural wisdom and receive clear direction for my life! I declare today that I am blessed with creativity, courage, talent and abundance! I am blessed with a strong will, self-control and self-discipline!

I am blessed with a great family, good friends, good health, faith, favour and fulfillment! I am blessed with success, supernatural strength, promotion and divine protection! I am blessed with a compassionate heart and a positive outlook on life! I declare that any curse or negative word that’s ever been spoken over me is broken right now in the name of Jesus! I declare that everything I put my hands to, will prosper and succeed! I declare it today and every day! Amen!’

And having made that declaration (yesss!!!) we are now expected to go out and use those blessings to help others, just as generously as the Lord shared them with us, so that they too can come to know and LOVE Him like we do! Much LOVE!

…disobedience is the Christian’s downfall…

Today’s Scrip-Bit   19 February 2024 John 11:25a.

John 11:25a.        I AM, the resurrection and the Life.

Monday, oh Monday, you’ve come around again, letting us know it’s time to get back out into the evil world and earn a living!  (smile) But, on this third Monday in February, many Canadians will not be working as two thirds of the provinces celebrate Canada Day, or some other name chosen by the particular province. Unfortunately, it’s not a Federal but regional holiday, so Federal workers will still be on the job. Meanwhile in the U.S, they celebrate President’s Day or Washington’s Birthday, referring to the 1st U.S. President, George Washington (1732-1799)

Now, last week we studied some of the ‘I AM’ statements of Jesus. So far, we have reviewed ‘I am the Bread of Life.’ (John 6:35) ‘I am the Light of the World.’ (John 8:12) ‘I am the Door.’ (John 10:7,9A) ‘I am the Good Shepherd.’ (John 10:11,14) Hopefully, we can finish the other three ‘I AM’s’ today…but I won’t bet on it. (smile) And the next ‘I AM’ statement we’ll look at is ‘I AM, the resurrection and the Life.’ Jesus spoke these words to Martha, Lazarus’ sister when she rebuked Him for not coming earlier to save her brother from death.

But Jesus told her, ‘Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I AM the resurrection, and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead (may die), yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.’ (John 11:23-27)

Oh my brethren, that is indeed the same question that Christ is asking many of us today; do we believe that He is the Messiah, the Giver of eternal life?  Hopefully, many of us like Martha, will reply in the affirmative. However, there are still many, even supposed Christians, who don’t truly believe that Jesus can resurrect their souls. That’s surely a sad thing, because Jesus statement of ‘I AM the resurrection and the life’ is probably, His greatest, since it signifies His awesome power to grant eternal life to those who truly believe in Him! And what’s the use in calling yourself a Christian if you don’t believe in your Leaders greatest ability eh? None whatsoever!

So friends, if you happen to fall into that latter category of unbelief,, please, please turn to the Lord and ask Him to help your unbelief. For remember what Jesus said to the demon possessed boy’s father who came to Him seeking help for his son? ‘Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.’ (Mark 9:23-24) The father believed, but he knew that his faith was not as strong as it should be, thus he asked for help in believing, as many of us ought to do, if we expect to see eternal life with Jesus, for with Jesus, it’s all about BELIEVING!

That brings us to Jesus’ next great ‘I AM’ statement. He made it after telling the disciples about His going away. ‘Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions (dwellings): if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.’ (John 14:1-4)

Now those are certainly interesting statements which are also being asked of us today; do we know who Jesus is, where He is, and how to get to Him? Or are we still like His disciples were? For in response to Jesus’ comments: ‘Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.’ (John 14:5-7)

And that’s another ‘I Am’ statement that should have us searching ourselves to see if we believe it, and if we do, how strongly, because it’s only through Jesus that we’ll ever get to those mansions in the sky.  It didn’t look so good either, when ‘Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth (will satisfy) us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father: and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?’ (John 14:8-9)

Unfortunately, it seems like the disciples were not as wise, knowledgeable and of strong faith as they were supposed to be. Jesus was obviously surprised at their lack of knowledge about Him after all the time He spent with them. Thus He continued: ‘Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? the words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself (on my own authority): but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.’ (John 14:10-14) Notice again friends, it’s all about BELIEF…BELIEF in Christ! Nothing else will cut it! And for the sake of brevity (smile) we’ll leave the last ‘I AM’ statement for tomorrow, obviously if God spares our lives.

Now, in humble confidence, let’s go to the throne of grace, through our Monday Morning Battle hymn, seeking divine help for our many earthly problems. Altogether: ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise Your Holy Name and thank You this Monday morning for life and strong faith in Christ, despite the mass confusion in our world. Heavenly Father, You are the ONLY ONE with the power to solve our many problems. Yes, we have all sinned and seriously disobeyed Your Word, but You are a merciful, forgiving and gracious God, who has faithfully promised to hear and answer our prayers when we humble ourselves, pray, and sincerely seek Your face.

So, we come to You now, with sincere repentance in our hearts, pleading for wise guidance and direction to alleviate our problems. Oh Father, please ease the pain of the many suffering from negative situations, show them Your awesome grace and mercy. And faithfully keep Your promise to prosper us if we turn from our evil ways. Show this evil world that You are indeed Jehovah Rapha; the God who heals! We pray this in the holy and blessed name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen! And again, we say: Amen!’

And divine help only comes when we sincerely repent and turn from our evil ways. So let’s begin there nuh. Much LOVE!

…the most important element of the Christian life is…BELIEF…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 9 June 2021 John 14:6.

John 14:6.     Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.

And we unto the hump now friends; that middling day called Wednesday! And once we get through or over it, we feel like we have the wherewithal to conquer the rest of the week. But we should not feel so inclined because it’s only the goodness, grace and mercy of Christ Jesus that can really get us through whatsoever temptations and trials we face during our lifetime.

Once we have Jesus in our corner, we have the ability to overcome any and everything that comes our way, because Jesus LOVES us and cares greatly for us, that’s why He died on the cross for us. So please let’s be wise and give our lives to Him completely, for He has ALL that we’ll ever need to succeed in this world, as well as the next!

Yes friends, by whatever name we choose to call Him, Jesus, Yahweh, Yeshua, the Conquering Lion of Judah, the Prince of Peace, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, or the name that’s above every other name, to which all knees shall bow and all tongues confess that He is Lord to the glory of the Father, He is still the ONE and ONLY Saviour of mankind, the ONLY ONE through whom we can access the Father and thus an eternal home in heaven, the place and eternal hope of the saved!

And I didn’t say that nuh, Jesus did, when the disciple Thomas questioned Him re knowing the way that He was going. ‘Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.’ (John 14:6) And until we fully understand that, and react positively to it, we will continue to be lost in the darkness of this evil and ungodly world.

Now the next bit of conversation between Jesus and His disciples is also interesting. He continued to Thomas: ‘If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth (will satisfy) us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself (on my own authority): but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.’ (John 14:7-10)

And no doubt, it was a difficult thing for the young disciples to understand, for Jesus was teaching them stuff contrary to the Jewish beliefs of the day, and they had only been with Him about three years. But we have had the words of Jesus for two thousand years, and yet many of us still refuse to acknowledge and believe that He is the Son of the ONE and ONLY True LIVING GOD!

Now listen to the scholars’ explanation re verse 9 above. ‘14:9. Seen me…seen the Father: There are no attributes of deity that the Son does not possess. This statement is most powerful. Everything that is true of God the Father is also true of the Son. The doctrine of the Trinity in the New Testament may be inscrutable (difficult to interpret or understand), but it is also inescapable (cannot be denied).’

So you see, once we know Jesus, we also know the Father, because He is the exact replica of the Father. That’s one of the reasons Christ came to earth, so that we could have a better and more intimate knowledge of the God we worshipped. And in like fashion, the Father desires to make us replicas of Jesus, as much as an imperfect created being can be. That clearly means, that a successful earthly life, and thus one that leads to the pearly gates of heaven, can only be built upon the stalwart and solid foundation that’s Jesus!

Oh my people, I wish I knew how to get through to us, to let us know that Jesus is truly ALL we need in this world. I can only give some testimony of my own and quote the scriptures, but so many of us still refuse to even acknowledge His existence much less believe in Him. And yuh know why? Because many of us, our deeds are evil, and we want them hidden in the darkness, but when we come to Jesus, all those evil deeds will be exposed.

For as Isaiah prophesied re the birth of the Prince of Peace. ‘The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.’ (Is. 9:2) And Jesus was the object of that prophecy, as He said to the hypocrite Pharisees: ‘I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.’ (John 8:12)

But obviously the Pharisees disputed His authority because He witnessed of Himself. And I just LOVE how Jesus could tie up the ole hypocrites an’ dem. They thought they could use words to justify their hypocrisy, but Jesus could better justify His position. As He answered them: ‘Though I bear record (witness) of myself, yet my record (witness) is true: for I know whence I came, and wither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.’ (John 8:14)

Ah mih bredrin, we still live in a dark and evil world with much sin and evil hiding in that darkness, but the only hope we have of ever escaping that darkness into a world of light, containing much peace and LOVE and goodwill to men, is by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour! Aren’t we tired of living under this dark cloud of sin and evil? I know I am. So please, please, let’s wake up and take Bruh Paul’s wise advice to the church at Rome: ‘The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.’ (Rom. 13:12)

Oh friends, the day of Christ’s return is drawing near, it’s time we prepare for it by throwing off the works of darkness and the lusts of the flesh, like drunkenness, sexual immorality, jealousy and riotous living, and instead take up the armour of light that’s Christ; serve Him, and not our own selfish desires! There’s a sense of urgency that we Christians ought to display at this breaking of the day! And for those of us who are truly trying to do that, let’s go home now declaring (steups!) our Wednesday Wail, letting all and sundry know of our wonderful position in the Son of God!

As one strong and sincere voice: ‘Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: I’m so glad to be alive on this Wednesday! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: Thank God the breath of life is still flowing through me on this Wednesday! I am halfway home. My hands are fixed securely on the plough, and I’m not turning back. I’m not looking back at the past, not focusing on what has gone before. But my eyes are fixed straight ahead; straight ahead to a glorious future with Jesus. Glory Hallelujah!’

Now need I remind us that if we endure to the end, that the future will be even more glorious than we ask or imagine? Much LOVE!

…what will it take to get you to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Saviour eh…when you’re in the fires of hell…then it’s too late…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 6 August 2015 John 14:6‏

John 14:6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Aye Friends, welcome to another somewhat cool, but otherwise beautiful summer’s day in God’s wonderful universe!

New mercies and blessings specially prepared for today, this terrific Thursday in August 2015, have already been flooding our space. The most important being the breath of life that’s still flowing through our bodies, which allows us to enjoy the salvation and eternal life offered by Jesus’ debt payment on the cross of Calvary.

Wow! Glory to God! Have you given Him thanks and praise for those two things as yet? As soon as we rise and greet each new day, we ought to float prayers of thanksgiving up to heaven on them. For without them, we either won’t be rising to greet a new day, (smile) or spending eternity with Jesus. And that last option is the most important for a Christian soul.

Now here’s an interesting and rather appropriate quote from Toronto born, North American writer Grenville Kleiser (1868-1935). He says that ‘Today is the day in which to express your noblest qualities of mind and heart, to do at least one worthy thing which you have long postponed…’

And my people that is indeed a worthwhile decision, for over the last decade or so, we have become such great procrastinators, even about things that we consider important.

But what better way to show our appreciation for life and God’s grace and mercies than by stepping up to the plate today and doing something that we’ve been putting off, whether it’s volunteering or simply cleaning up stuff that needs to be cleaned up.

That reminds me of the Johnny Reid song that we shared with you sometime aback which declared: ‘Today I’m going to change the world…One day at a time…’

Yeh Friends, we desperately need to change our world, but the reality is that we can only do it one day at a time. And there’s no better time to start than the present. So let’s make today that day nuh.  Let’s override procrastination with pro-action, and with Jesus’ help we can certainly do it.

For as our Bit wisely informs us: ‘Jesus saith unto him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.’ And I like to add to that, He’s also the Light of this darkened world.

So if Jesus Christ is indeed all those things, why aren’t we more enamoured of and interested in Him and His doings eh Friends? Our general behaviour and actions certainly don’t seem to indicate the esteem and appreciation that He truly deserves from us.

It’s also definitely instructional to see how that statement of Jesus came to be made. He was telling His disciples about His going away and preparing mansions for them. ‘And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?’ (John 14:3-5)

Ah mih people, even those who were closest to Jesus in His earthly sojourn didn’t appear to pay serious attention to His words. Jesus then declared our Bit to Thomas, before continuing with this admonishment. ‘If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Philip saith unto him, Lord show us the Father, and it sufficeth (will satisfy) us. Jesus saith unto him, have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father?

Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of my self (of my own authority): but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.’ (John 14:7-10)

Oh my brethren, so sadly, a couple thousand years later, the Lord Jesus Christ is still asking those questions of too many supposed believers! Granted that if Thomas and Philip who actually walked with Jesus had doubts and didn’t fully understand, who are we to be so well informed and enlightened?

But that argument doesn’t hold any water, for we have had two thousand years of much better information and time to understand and ingest the Good News of Jesus. So just like Jesus reproached the disciples back then, He is today also reproaching us for our unbelief, our lack of faith and understanding when it’s all clearly spelled out in His Word and the times of His earthly life.

Friends, it’s either we believe or we don’t believe! There is no halfway point, no way to waffle, no sitting on the fence, being double minded and/or constantly wavering from one position to the other. For as James tells us: ‘A doubleminded man is unstable in all his ways.’ (James 1:8)

So please my people, today, let’s get off the fence nuh, let’s stop procrastinating and wavering. Instead, let’s truly take hold of Jesus and all that He so wonderfully stands for and represents and believe with all our hearts, souls and minds that He is indeed the Way, the Truth, the Life and the Light! Now that is true wisdom! Much LOVE!

…only believe…that He is who He says He is…that’s all Jesus asks of us…
