Today’s Scrip-Bit 15 April 2021 Proverbs 4:7.

Proverbs 4:7.     Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding

Come on friends, let’s make hay while the sun shines nuh! Let’s get a move on, let’s start our day by talking to Jesus and finding out what He wants us to do today, what’s on His agenda for us this blessed day. Please remember that He’s the Boss, and we have surrendered our lives to Him, so that means we need to do what He desires, not promote our own selfish lusts! And I believe He wants us to listen to Cousin Sol’s words today on a Father’s wisdom, so let’s do just that nuh. We can never go wrong if we do it.

So please read with me from Proverbs chapter 4. ‘Hear ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments and live.’ (Prov. 4:1-4) Yes my faithful brethren, those are the things we need to do in these troubled and trying times…keep God’s commandments so that we can live, and live good too.

And the scholars make a good point as they say: ‘4:3-4. Three generations are linked together in the transmission of wisdom, (from grandfather, to father, to son). Note that it is transmitted by personal influence, especially in the home.’ Now that’s a most important aspect of wisdom and learning God’s commandments, they need to be passed down first through generations of the family, not in the schools and churches, those should just be ancillary helpers of the home situation, to reinforce what is taught at home.

Unfortunately though, in these supposed modern and enlightened times, neither wisdom nor commandments are now taught in the home, so children don’t go to church, and the laws of God have been removed from the schools and other public places, where they were once proudly displayed. Ah Lord eh! So if parents are too busy, or just don’t care, and there are no ancillary places, where are young people going to learn wisdom and how to live this mish-mash earthly life successfully eh? Nowhere!

But there are a lot of places and people who are intent on teaching them how to live the worldly life! No wonder church and God are no longer important to a lot of people. In fact, in this supposed Christian society, it’s surprising how many people have never heard about Jesus! Isn’t that a crying shame? It certainly is! However friends, let’s not stray from our topic nuh; the wisdom that was on Cousin Sol’s mind. And he continues with these magnificent words of advice.

‘Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline (turn away) from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: LOVE her, and she shall keep thee.’ (Prov. 4:5-6) Oh my people, there’s no better advice possible in this whole wide world! Wisdom and understanding, as they pertain to Jesus, are the most important things in the human’s life! For without them, it is impossible to live or lead a wholesome and worthwhile life! So why are so many of us refusing to get wisdom and understanding as it pertains to Jesus eh?

Because the lifestyle of the enemy is more in line with our natural sinful nature, and living for Jesus means giving up some of our sinful behaviour and actions, which we just don’t want to do. But look at the benefits of wisdom and understanding nuh if you LOVE them and don’t forsake them; they’ll preserve you and keep you. Yes, mih bredrin, when we possess those things and keep them close to our hearts, they will enable us to live a rich and prosperous life in all aspects and situations.

For as Cousin Sol continues: ‘Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.’ (Prov. 4:7) And I guess you want to know what wisdom and understanding are, and why they are so important? Well, wisdom is basically knowledge and discernment, and understanding is knowing how to put them to good use in a practical manner. For knowing stuff and not using it wisely is a waste of time. And that’s why we ought to seek after wisdom and understanding.

As Cousin Sol further advises: ‘Exalt her (that’s wisdom), and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to (place on) thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver thee.’ (Prov. 4:8-9) Wow mih people! Now who doesn’t want honour and promotion, grace and glory eh? We all do! But seeking wisdom and understanding and living by their dictates is the only way that we’ll truly get all of that good stuff!

And some of us are still wondering where we can get wisdom and understanding? Well that’s easy; from God! As Cousin Sol says in other parts of Proverbs. ‘The fear (reverence) of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.’ (Prov. 1:7) Yes friends, it all begins with having a right reverence for God.

And how do we get that reverence eh? Cousin Sol tells us: ‘Yea, if thou criest after knowledge (discernment), and lifteth up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her (wisdom) as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures: Then shalt thou understand the fear (reverence) of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

He layeth up (stores up) sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler (shield) to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgement (guards the paths of justice), and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgement (justice), and equity; yea, every good path.’ (Prov. 2: 3:9)

And the scholars offer these wise explanations. ‘2:1-22. The conditions for obtaining wisdom are given first: one must earnestly seek it, as a prospector would search for gold (vs. 1-4). It is not an undirected search, however, since the parent’s instruction is the basis. The consequences of obtaining wisdom are then listed (vs. 5-22): knowledge of God (vs. 5-8) and right conduct (vs. 9-22).’ We can therefore see friends, that living a good and prosperous life demands a well-directed life from birth until death.

However, the basics must be taught by the parents. We must give our children a proper roadmap for living this earthly life, otherwise they will falter and get lost and end up in the wrong place. So please, please, let’s get back to God nuh, let’s get back to teaching our children the right way if we truly want them to live a good and prosperous life. And it’s not like we don’t have the tools to do the job properly. We do. For the Lord has blessed us with everything we need to do His earthly work, so much stuff that’s contained in what we call our Thursday Blessings. So let’s declare them now nuh, so that we can recall their purpose.

As one strong voice! ‘I declare that I am blessed with God’s supernatural wisdom and receive clear direction for my life! I declare today that I am blessed with creativity, courage, talent and abundance! I am blessed with a strong will, self-control and self-discipline! I am blessed with a great family, good friends, good health, faith, favour and fulfillment!

I am blessed with success, supernatural strength, promotion and divine protection! I am blessed with a compassionate heart and a positive outlook on life! I declare that any curse or negative word that’s ever been spoken over me is broken right now in the name of Jesus! I declare that everything I put my hands to, will prosper and succeed! I declare it today and every day! Amen!’

Now it’s time to go and share them with others, just as generously as the Lord shared them with us. Much LOVE!

…if any of you lack wisdom…ask of God…who gives to all liberally and without reproach… (James 1:5)

Today’s Scrip-Bit 14 December 2020 Proverbs 7:2.

Proverbs 7:2.     Keep my commandments and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

Oh my people, what a world we living in today eh! Nobody is satisfied with anything. Whatever conversations you listen to, or take part in, they always seem to be filled with lots of kvetching and dissatisfactions, with vast differences of opinions on either side of the equation. And don’t talk about conspiracy theories, they abound in every sphere of life; from the pandemic, to the U.S presidential elections, to the vaccines and what they going to do or not do, to climate change, if it’s real or not, and the li’l clique of wealthy and powerful people who want to control the world. Now why would they want to do that eh, when they already control it? (smile)

Yes friends, it’s indeed a topsy-turvy world, filled with so much misinformation, disinformation, lies and fake news that you have a very hard time disseminating the wheat from the chaff and the sheep from the goats. Race and religion have again come to the forefront of our woes and when mixed with worldwide poverty, homelessness and a disastrous economic situation, they only fuel the fire some seven times hotter. I don’t think that any of us would say that our world is not in a state of turmoil, and a very precarious one at that, where even the smallest flame, set in the wrong place, can cause an incendiary situation of enormous and catastrophic proportions.

Now if that ever occurs, who knows what the sad and devastating outcome will be eh? One thing’s for sure; it won’t be beneficial to most of the world. But enough of the negative supposition, let’s see what we can do to bring some positivity to the table nuh. And for that I strongly suggest we turn to the only area where real truth, unchangeable and indisputable truth can be found; that’s the Bible, the Lord’s Word, which like Him, doesn’t change, and hasn’t changed for thousands of years, and will continue to reign supreme for all eternity.

And as I was scanning through the Good Book earlier on, looking for a subject or topic that would grab our attention, I happened to, or was led to these words of Cousin Sol in the Book of Proverbs, re the wiles of a harlot. He starts out with this awesome warning: ‘My son, keep my words, and lay up (treasure) my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman (near kin). That they may keep thee from the strange (immoral) woman, from the stranger (seductress) which flattereth with her words.’ (Prov. 7:1-5)

What strong, but very wise sentiments my brethren. And Cousin Sol knows whereof he speaks, for he continues: ‘For at the window of my house I looked through my casement (lattice), And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths (the sons), a young man void (devoid) of understanding, Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night. And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of a harlot, and subtile of heart (crafty).

(She is loud and stubborn (rebellious); her feet abide not in her house: Now she is without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait (lurking) at every corner.) So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent (defiant or shameless) face said unto him, I have peace offerings with me; this day have I paid my vows (the time is right, a religious holiday). Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt (coloured coverings of Egyptian linen). I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. Come let us take our fill of LOVE until the morning: let us solace (delight) ourselves with LOVES. For the goodman (my husband) is not at home, he is gone on a long journey: He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed (new or full moon).’ (Prov. 7:7-20)

Oh my people, my people, that’s exactly how this evil world behaves; catches us with sweet, endearing words and promises of delight and ecstasy in the dark of night, when we are unaware, not conscious or mature enough in the Word. And as Cousin Sol further details: ‘With her much fair (enticing) speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced (seduced) him. He goeth after her straightway (immediately), as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks (a dog or lamb to its chains); Till a dart (an arrow) strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to a snare, and knoweth not that it is for (would take) his life. (Prov. 7:21-23)

That’s oh so reminiscent of the devil’s work mih people, and sadly we keep falling for it. But as Peter says, we desperately need to: ‘Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.’ (1 Pet. 1:8) And Cousin Sol ends that chapter with these words of immortal wisdom. ‘Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Let not thine heart decline (turn away) to her ways, go not astray in her paths. For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.’ (Prov. 7:24-27)

And isn’t that the gospel truth precious saints of Christ! No wonder James proclaims: ‘Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh (near) to God, and he will draw nigh to you.’ (James 4:8a) Best advice we can ever get friends! So let’s take it nuh and right now draw near to God through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn.

Altogether now in strong, sincere voice: ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise Your Holy Name and thank You that this Monday morning we’re alive and standing in faith despite the mass confusion that’s currently prevailing in our world. We desperately need Your divine help, for You are the ONLY ONE with the power to solve our many problems; the pandemic of Covid -19, the racial, political, and religious strife that’s ignited worldwide, plus the natural disasters like storms, famine, drought, plagues, climate change, wildfires, earthquakes and erupting volcanoes that suddenly seem to be blossoming more and more as time goes by.

Heavenly Father, we admit that we have all sinned and seriously come short in obedience and compliance to Your Word, but we know that You are a merciful, forgiving and gracious God, and You have faithfully promised to hear and answer our prayers when we humble ourselves, pray, and sincerely seek Your face. That’s why we come to You now, with sincere repentance in our hearts, pleading with You to give us, ordinary folks, as well as our leaders, employers and medical personnel, wise guidance and direction to bring our problems under control.

And for those who are currently suffering from the many negative situations, we pray that You will ease their suffering and heal them. Father, please show them Your awesome grace and mercy, and keep Your promise that You’ll hear our prayer, forgive us, and heal our land if we turn from our evil ways. Show this evil world that You are indeed Jehovah Rapha; the God who heals! We pray this in the holy and blessed name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen! And again we say: Amen!’

So please, please, let’s heed Cousin Sol’s important warning nuh, and if we know what’s good for us, stay away from the wiles of the many harlots out there; the devil and his evil cronies. Much LOVE!

…be very careful of a sweet smile…and an enticing word…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 4 March 2019 Proverbs 4:7.

Proverbs 4:7.     Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

And the clock ticks…and the seconds, minutes, hours and the days roll by…until they come to Monday…then they just seem to stop, to hang there in mid-air, as though everything suddenly gone in limbo! Oh how we wish that were true eh and we didn’t have to get up and get out and begin a new work week!

And for many of us it’s actually true because this is Carnival Monday, the beginning of the yearly bacchanalian festival in several parts of the world the two days before Ash Wednesday…but nothing to touch the Ole Mas celebration in T&T this Monday morning!

That is where you get real down and ‘dutty’ (dirty), playing in any ole and dirty looking costume, but making sure yuh ketch a steelband coming down the road beating a sweet bomb tune, so you and yuh lady and yuh friends and them could carry on in the street, wine down in the road, carray yuh body any ole how, (ramajay), and just get on bad and disgusting. (smile)

Well that use to be ole mas, don’t know what it morph into these days since I don’t take part in it again. Don’t even know if they still have Bomb Competition – the steelbands beating some favourite tune as they come out on the road Monday morning, vying for Best Bomb Tune. And ah laughing here as I remember some of them ole times.

But leh we move on yes, because some people have to go to work, and they even more distraught than ever because they missing carnival in T&T. So to help us all this Carnival Monday, let’s belt out we Monday Morning Battle Hymn, even if we heart not truly in it, and we mind somewhere down in T&T misbehaving in the road. (smile)

All together now: ‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! We, your humble servants, praise your Holy Name and thank you that this Monday morning we have jobs to go to; jobs we don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose here on earth; keeping lives and families together.

We also thank you Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm you’ve wrought in our weary souls over the last two days. It’s that rejuvenation of Spirit which allows us now to sally forth with confidence into the evil, ungodly world that surrounds us, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s wicked taunts, wiles and lies.

But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing your powerful, protective spiritual armour. We surrender our all to you, and humbly ask that you let your incredible aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit, lead and guide all your servants as we go out to meet the enemy in battle.

Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, and thereby further your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy Name of your Son, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. AMEN!’

And yeh friends, ah know we feeling better after that, but still…we’d rather be somewhere else partying, making a fool of we self, in the hot weather. But them’s the breaks, so we just have to grin and bear it and get out there and labour in Jesus name. Yeh, reminisce li’l bit every so often, but doh daydream the day away on the people work nuh, because then you’ll be stealing their time and Jesus wouldn’t approve of that. (smile)

Break the spell by telling yuhself that if God spare yuh life, next year Carnival not going to catch yuh up here in this cold weather, but in some warm, tropical climate playing a serious mas, and then seriously start saving yuh money and vacation time from now! And since I know plenty of you won’t like my suggestions, I’m turning to Cousin Sol to pass on a father’s wisdom. Hope you’ll listen to him, cause he was once the wisest man in the world.

‘Hear ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments and live.

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline (turn away) from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: LOVE her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.’ (Prov.4:1-7)

Yes my brethren, wisdom, knowledge and understanding are the most important aspects of living a fruitful and sensible life. And how do we get all that? Friends, it begins with this warning from Cousin Sol: ‘The fear of the Lord (reverential awe) is the beginning of knowledge (principal beginning): but fools despise wisdom and instruction.’ (Prov.1:7)

Ah mih people, until and unless we revere the Lord God Almighty, He of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, true wisdom, knowledge and understanding will NEVER be ours. Why? Because that’s where it all comes from!

As James says: ‘If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not (without reproach); and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering (not doubting). For he that wavereth (doubts) is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.’ (James 1:5-8)

Yuh see friends, a wise life all has to do with reverence for God, blended with sincere trust and faith in His Word, His promises and plans for our lives. And Cousin Sol ends that li’l speech by declaring (right ho): ‘Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou doest embrace her. She shall give to (place on) thine head an ornament of grace, a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.’ (Prov.4:8-9)

Yes my people, that’s how powerful and important true wisdom and understanding are in our lives. We talking about that wisdom and understanding which comes from and through God, not the worldly stuff. So stop with all the horrors about carnival! Now that we finally see the light nuh, leh we go and do the people work and forget about carnival, because that is what Jesus expects of us. (smile) Much LOVE!

…thinking too much about mas…is not a sign of true wisdom…(smile)
