The overwhelming importance of LOVE rather than Strife in our lives!

Psalm 133:1.        Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.

And at last it was Friday… so the joyful shouts of ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday!’ obviously were heard all around the world, but not as much as in this fair and flourishing land of Canada, where today heralds the beginning of our long, Canada Day weekend. Yes friends, on Monday we celebrate our national day, the anniversary of Canadian Confederation, the final coming together of all the disparate sections of this great land on July 1, 1867. So you can just picture the height and intensity of the celebrations this upcoming weekend. 

However my fellow believers, please, let’s enjoy the time, but let’s not go overboard as we are sometimes won’t to do. And with the summer season and it’s many activities now in full swing, we definitely need the gentle reminder of these words as we get off work today… a modicum of circumspection. (smile) Yes, it’s time to celebrate and enjoy the benefits of our good country, but it’s also necessary to keep God first place, as we do so. End of Sermon. 

And today we’re just going to have a refresher  look at the very important sentiments of Bruh David’s words in Psalm 133; the dwelling in unity, or harmony, something that unfortunately no longer exists in this turbulent and ungodly world. The psalm opens by telling us in no uncertain terms: ‘Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.’ (Ps. 133:1) 

Now that’s such a simple and very important truth; one with which we’d all concur, if asked. But in the actual doing of it, we just seem to lose the very essence of the sentiment and instead live in strife with each other. And we just have to look around our world today and see that STRIFE, rather than LOVE is what’s making it go round! How sad! 

But that’s one of the great failings of mankind; we often know to do the right thing, yet end up doing the wrong thing. It’s like we know we should be serving Almighty God with our whole hearts, souls, bodies and minds, but instead we embrace Beelzebub and his lustful desires for the perishable things of this world, reducing the things of heaven to a distant second place. How foolish! But we know it, and still do it! No wonder James tells us: ‘Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.’ (James 4:17) 

Sadly though, man’s folly and disobedience has been his downfall from the beginning of time. Our forefathers, Adam and Eve, were told in no uncertain terms not to eat of the fruit of the tree of Knowledge, for they would surely die. But they allowed the wily devil to introduce doubt into their minds by deceptively saying, that all the stuff about dying wasn’t true. God just knew that if they ate of the forbidden fruit, their eyes would be opened, and they would be like God, knowing good and evil. (Gen. 3:1-8)  

And unfortunately, it’s still the same way today; the devil is still beguiling us into ungodly acts, which are only causing strife and torment all over God’s great earth. But if our world is to survive, we’ve got to stop the constant strife and concentrate instead on harmony. It’s like when there was strife between Abraham and his nephew Lot’s people. Abraham wisely came to Lot and said to him: ‘Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.’ (Gen. 13:8) And they settled the matter peacefully. 

But today, so many actual brothers and sisters, fellow country men and women, as well as different nations, can’t seem to settle the strife that exists between them. The same goes for Christ’s church, where strife is ever so rampant! Some of us are even allowing the devil to eagerly exacerbate it! But that should not be so my brethren. As the author of Hebrews so wisely reminds us: ‘Let brotherly LOVE continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.’ (Heb. 13:1-2) 

And that’s the gospel truth! None of us know with whom we’ll come into contact on any given day. That’s why it’s so important to treat people with LOVE and kindness. Remember one of Jesus’ directives is for us to LOVE our enemies. (Matt. 5:44) Unfortunately though, nowadays, with all the anger, hatred, resentment and the many other negative sentiments overflowing our world, we don’t even seem to LOVE our friends and families, much less our enemies. Oh my fellow saints, all I can do is to try and encourage us to turn back to the imperishable things of God, and leave the perishable things of the world and Satan alone, for they do not show who we really are: the children of God. 

Now let’s go to the throne of grace through our Friday Chant, seeking divine aid, to help with our many earthly problems. Altogether: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through this past week. You know it’s been rough…  because our many serious problems are escalating instead of improving. And it’s obvious we can’t fix them on our own, so Lord, we’re desperately crying out for your help. Oh heavenly Father, with your omnipotent help, and our trusting faith, we know that we can stand strong and steadfast and defeat the simmering unrest in our land. We therefore ask you Lord to give our leaders the wise guidance to handle these unexpected storms properly. 

And please help the rest of us to be responsible and to stay safe amidst all the anxiety and confusion of these ungodly times. We fervently pray too Lord that you’ll use the discontent and dissatisfaction in our land as a means of restoring faith in you. Return backsliders to your fold. Show them the error of their ways. And please introduce a new flock of believers, who will embrace your LOVE and compassion by the example, we, your faithful believers set. So that our sinful world can wake up and smell the coffee, wake up and smell it sweet and strong! We pray this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen!’ 

And if we truly want and expect to see divine aid, it would do us well to remember these words of our prayer: ‘by the example, we, your faithful believers set.’ Much LOVE!

…strife is the work of the devil…unity is the work of God…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 6 March 2021 Mark 1:35.

Mark 1:35.     ​And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary (deserted) place, and there he prayed.

So here it is, that big day called Saturday! (smile) So what’s in store for you today eh? Hope it’s more of those new mercies and compassions of our wonderful God! And if you have stayed with Him, surrendered your life and will to Him, I am sure that those good vibes will be, or have already been transported to your soul and spirit. Bless His holy name my faithful friends! For He is indeed a good and faithful God and will never let you down, or leave and forsake you. You can bet your bottom dollar, as well as your life, your eternal destiny on that! 

He’s so awesome, so powerful and all-knowing that we can’t even comprehend His thoughts and ways. No wonder He proclaims to us mere mortals: ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.’ (Is, 55:8-9) And all of God’s people said a loud, proud and grateful ‘Amen!’ Yes friends, once we admit those two statements, then we are on the way to a good thing. 

Now let’s see what interesting quotes our friend Anselm sent us this past week. Hope I can get my head around them. (smile) And this first one is boss! ‘Start each day with a positive thought and a grateful heart.’ Now that’s definitely the best way to begin each day: on a positive note, with prayer and thanksgiving. That way you set a right template for the entire day. Yuh notice how Jesus began His days? Mark tells us: ‘And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary (deserted) place, and there he prayed.’ (Mark 1:35) 

Oh my people, if Jesus needed to get in touch with His heavenly Father each and every morning, who are we to be different eh, especially if we’re His loyal and faithful followers? No, we don’t have to get up before the break of day, and go out into a deserted place, but we do have to spend at least a few moments giving thanks and asking for guidance, wisdom and safety to begin our day. That’s just wisdom of the highest order! 

And the next quote says: ‘Do not fear failure but rather fear not trying.’ That’s more gospel truth my brethren! We should not be afraid to fail, but we should be afraid of not trying, because it’s only in trying that you can find success. If you don’t try, you’ll never succeed! 

And though you may fail when you try, it’s in that failure that you learn the real and true lessons of life. There are so many who people failed many times before they eventually found success. That means that every time you fail, you’ve got to get back up and try again, especially if you’re a follower of Jesus, because giving up does not exist in His vocabulary. (smile) 

And that’s a rather appropriate message for us believers in this pandemic time; we can’t afford to fail, or to give up on doing Christ’s work, because He’s depending on us. He expects us to be the very flavourful salt of the earth and light of the world, so that people can see our good deeds and glorify His Father in heaven. So let’s not even think about failure or giving up nuh. 

And then there’s this: ‘You cannot control the behavior of others, but you can always choose how you respond to it.’ Oh friends, more indisputable truth! We can’t control how people behave, but we can certainly control how we react to their behaviour. And Jesus desires that all His followers always react with a good attitude…well within reason, (smile) for we are frail and weak human beings, so we do make mistakes. 

But seriously though precious people, these times we’re living in are so prevalent with bad behaviour that it’s hard to avoid it on any given day. Things like manners no longer exist in our selfish and me first and alone society. So it does take a strong and mature spirit to avoid reacting to bad behaviour with our own bad behaviour. 

Jesus taught us to LOVE our enemies, not to use the retaliation principle of an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth, but to turn the other cheek when smitten on one, and to go the extra mile.’ (Matt. 5:38-44) And Bruh Paul said it thus to the church at Rome: ‘Recompense (repay) to no man evil for evil… Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.’ (Rom. 12:17a, 21) It couldn’t be any clearer than that my brethren. 

Now here comes another tough nut to crack. ‘Even if you cannot change all the people around you, you can change the people you choose to be around. Life is too short to waste your time on people who don’t respect, appreciate, and value you. Spend your life with people who make you smile, laugh, and feel LOVED.’ And it’s all very true, but not very easy to do in practice, because you can’t change people unless they want to change, and ofttimes you don’t have the power to get different people around you, those who make you laugh and respect you. 

For example, in the many families we have nowadays where respect and compassion for each other is sadly lacking. You might want to get away from them but you can’t because they are family and you live together. It’s the same with co-workers who don’t treat you right. It’s not always easy to find another job, so sometimes you just have to put up with negative attitude and show a positive one yourself, like Jesus told us above. You can do it more easily with friends though. 

And when you become a follower of Jesus, He will probably ease you away from some old friends, who are bad influences on you, and bring new ones who are a better supporting cast. But we do need to do our best to have people around us who care for us and are willing to encourage us and keep us accountable. It makes no sense to spend too much time around sour, negative, disgruntled people who only pull us down. End of story! (smile) 

And the last quote is also a great one. ‘Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals. If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more.’ Oh friends, that’s the nature of the beast! We are never satisfied with what we have, yet we keep wanting more. How many of us have oodles of stuff around us which we once thought was so wonderful, but now lies in a disregarded pile heaven only knows where? 

So what makes us think that the more we have the happier we will be eh? The evil twin sisters of ‘greed and jealousy!’ And Jesus covers that splendidly in the parable of the rich fool, where He says: ‘Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.’ (Luke. 12:15) Yes friends, that says it all; more is not necessarily good or better; ofttimes it’s worse. Let’s remember that and live accordingly nuh. Much LOVE!

…be grateful for the little things…for when you are…big things usually come your way…

Luke 10:33.    But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him. 

 
Oh Friends, what is our wonderful city of Toronto coming to eh? A couple days ago the police fired nine shots at an 18 or 19 year old youth on a streetcar, who apparently only had a knife. And it seems like they also tasered him. Now, from what I’ve gathered, there wasn’t any hostage taking situation or anything like that, but they still took him down the easy way.
 
Yesterday though, hundreds of angry family and citizens marched through downtown Toronto expressing their disappointment and dismay, vociferously protesting the heavy handed display of force by the police in that particular incident, and the cowboy, Wild West behaviour of cops in general these days.
 
They seem to think that they are a law unto themselves and can do as they please, and the sad part is that nothing ever seems to happen to them when they step out of line. Not one cop has been found guilty of any offence, serious or otherwise and sentenced to jail time. The investigating body always seems to find that the cops did no wrong.
 
Meanwhile, the Police Chief and the head of the Board that oversees them, just keep on mouthing a set of foolish platitudes and excuses, while the cops continue running roughshod over those they’re supposed to be protecting. And the funny thing about justice is that it must only be done, but it must also appear to be done. And that’s certainly not happening around here these days.
 
And why do you have to fire nine shots at a man in an enclosed streetcar, surrounded by law enforcement officers, who didn’t seem to be causing anybody on board any problems? Nine shots sure are a lot. Those cops should be taken back to the range and taught how to shoot.
 
Anyway Friends, let’s see if we can get some understanding of this oftimes macabre life, by turning to our Bit. ‘But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him.’
 
Now yesterday we weighed in on the enmity between the Jews and the Samaritans, as well as the point that Jesus wanted to prove, re LOVING our enemies. Today, we’ll look at how we can do that, despite the dislike or other negative emotions in our souls.
 
And the main way to do that is by having and showing compassion to them. LOVING here doesn’t necessarily constitute or involve hugging and kissing etc, but more treating others we might dislike with compassion, as the Samaritan treated his natural enemy, the injured Jew, while his fellow Jews passed him by on the other side. 
 
Oh my brethren, at times like those, our personal feelings or feuds MUST be put aside for the greater good of mankind!
 
And how does the dictionary define compassion? ‘Pity inclining one to spare or help, sympathetic pitying.’ I don’t like the use of the word pity there, because it implies a sort of negative, condescending connotation. I believe empathy might be a better word.
 
However, from that definition, we can clearly see that the cops in the situation above displayed no compassion whatsoever. They were not interested in helping the young man, but simply in putting him down, in quelling the dangerous situation. And it’s been proven over the last few years that the cops don’t have sufficient training in how to deal with unstable people, and apparently little or no inclination to learn.
 
However, let’s look at some scriptures that deal with that great word, compassion, which should be a staple emotion in each and every believer in Jesus. Unfortunately though, many of us don’t show it, and instead react with the same take down mentality as the trigger-happy cops.
 
The first scripture deals with another parable of Jesus, that of the lost, the prodigal son, who, when he realized the mess he had made of his life, decided to go back home, apologize to his father and ask for a servant’s position. ‘And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.’ (Luke 15:20)
 
Note Friends, that the father didn’t even wait to hear what the son had to say, but immediately welcomed him with opened arms, his only interest being that the son he’d lost had been found, and returned home in good shape.
 
And that’s exactly how our heavenly Father deals with us! His main concern, regardless of our failures and apologies, is that we come back home to Him, safe and sound. Just returning home to Him brings forgiveness and compassion.
 
Wow! What a wonderful God we serve my people! It amazes me everyday when I think about the LOVE, mercy, compassion, forgiveness and grace that He confers on us, even though we’re lost, unworthy and like the things of the world, like the prodigal son did.
 
Now the important question is, do we act like that towards our fellow man? Not as often as we should. Even our close friends and family we try to beat down when they do wrong. How then can we be compassionate to strangers and enemies eh?
 
The only way is if the Holy Spirit of Jesus is actively working in our souls, since our normal human nature is to react in an antagonistic manner. That means then that compassion is something we have to consciously and actively work on, since it doesn’t come naturally. And we all know it’s not easy to LOVE and be compassionate to neighbours and enemies, but it’s what Jesus desires and fully expects from ALL of His followers.
 
And we’ll end with this description of Jesus, when He saw the many lost and scattered souls that daily flocked around Him, just dying to be saved. ‘But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted (were weary), and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.’ (Matt.9:36)
 
Oh my brethren, the same can be said of today’s generation! There are enormous numbers of people running around lost, looking for a shepherd to take care of them, and we believers are the ones who are meant to bring them to salvation, for we are Jesus’ latter day disciples. 
 
And as He told the ones He actually walked with: ‘The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.’ (Matt.9:37-38)
 
Yes Friends, let’s pray that the Lord will move in many hearts of His people, to go out and help to save the lost, the poor, the downtrodden, the sick and needy, because our society desperately needs it.
 
Yes my people, if we’re ever to climb out of the mire in which we’re currently floundering, many more believers have to go forth and harvest the lost souls, with lots of compassion. That’s heavenly wisdom! Much LOVE!

Today’s Scrip-Bit 14 June 2012 2 Chronicles 32:7

2 Chronicles 32:7.   Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him.
 
Oh Friends, the ole fella’s in a bit of a mess this morning. The flesh refused to let me get up, then when I finally did arise, it continued provoking me with allergic reactions and arthritic pain. But just as neither sleet, snow nor rain stops the mail from going out, likewise, piddling fleshly matters cannot stop God’s Word from being promoted. It can be late though. (smile) Now let’s see if I can write something sensible dealing with God’s Word. And why not, since it’s His Holy Spirit that’s leading and guiding me into all truth. And it seems that the Lord once again wants us to focus on developing courage and strength in His faithfulness, as our Bit so aptly declares. ‘Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him.’ And today we’ll focus on that time when the Syrians decided to come against Israel, but the prophet Elisha warned the king of Israel not to pass in certain places where the Syrians planned to camp. ‘And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there (he was watchful), not (just) once nor twice.’ (2 Kin.6:10) Yes Friends, God will always find ways to protect His faithful servants! Now seeing that the Israelites were always aware of the Syrians movements, the Syrian king could only suppose that there was a spy amongst them. But one of his servants informed him otherwise. ‘None my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.’ (2 Kin.6:12) Now how did that servant know about Elisha and his doings eh? I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lord placed that in his heart as a part of His ultimate plan. That also means my brethren, that we all have to be careful of what we say, for the Lord has ears and eyes all over. With that new info in hand, the Syrian king sent a large host to the city of Dothan, where Elisha was residing and surrounded it during the night. So when Elisha’s servant looked outside the next morning, the city was totally surrounded by the besieging forces of the Syrians. In fear, he turned to Elisha and asked what they were going to do? And I just adore Elisha’s answer. ”Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.’ (2 Kin.6:16) The same words that King Hezekiah spoke in our Bit. The same feeling of empowerment from the God of his fathers that Bruh David felt when he went out to fight Goliath. Oh my brethren, it’s that same feeling of empowerment that we will feel if and when we truly walk obedient to God’s will and faithfully call on Him when trouble befalls us. So, having told his servant not to fear because their army was bigger than the Syrian’s, Elisha prayed: ‘Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.’ (2 Kin.6:17) Wow! What a mighty God we serve my people! Why can’t we truly accept this fact eh? I wish that plenty more of us would do so, and thus walk true to His Word, so that He can faithfully react the way He reacted in olden times. But unfortunately that calls for strong courage, belief and much faith, which too few of us seem to really have in these modern times. Anyway, after that, Elisha prayed for the Lord to smite the Syrian host with blindness, which He faithfully did. Then Elisha led the blinded Syrians into the midst of Samaria, where the Lord opened their eyes. Can you imagine their fearful reaction to suddenly finding themselves deep in enemy territory? And Friends, this is one of those times when the wise, wonderful and mysterious movements of our amazing God shines forth. The king of Israel asked Elisha if he should smite the scared Syrians? Now listen closely to Elisha’s answer my people. ‘Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.’ (2 Kin.6:22) The Israelite king obeyed Elisha’s direction, prepared a huge feast for the Syrians, then sent them home. The result: ‘So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.’ (2 Kin.6:23) In our terminology Friends, they killed them with kindness. And as the scholars’ so rightly point out; ‘Elisha’s kindness to his enemies is like Jesus’ own injunctions in Matt.5:43-47.’ That’s where He advised us to LOVE our enemies and be kind to them. Oh my brethren, there’s not much more I can say to convince us that when we walk obediently with the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, He will direct our paths in peace and safety. So I’ll just have to hope and pray that our wonderful and merciful God will eventually get through to all those hearts of stone that exist in our fallen world, and LOVINGLY replace them with hearts of flesh, as He has promised. (Ezek.11:19, 36:26) In closing though, let’s listen to Bruh David, as he declares his total trust in the Lord. ‘As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice. He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with (against) me.’ (Ps.55:16-18) Yes Friends, when we fight our battle under the Lord’s banner, there are always more with us, than be with our enemies. For as Bruh Paul says in these immortal, true and wise words: What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?’ (Rom.8:31) And that’s the gospel truth mih people! Much LOVE!…and we shall walk with Him…and talk with Him…and He shall be our guide and protector…from this day till forever more…
