Today’s Scrip-Bit 4 July 2016 Psalm 12:2

Psalm 12:2.     They speak vanity (idly, falsely) every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with double heart (an inconsistent mind) do they speak.

HAPPY  4TH  OF JULY  U. S. OF A!

Ah friends, as I was getting ready to write the Bit, the old Chicago tune popped into my head: ‘Does anybody really know what time it is…? Does anybody really care…?’

And it struck me that the majority of the world doesn’t seem know what time it is – THE LAST DAYS – and nobody really seems to care either, otherwise it wouldn’t be such a tragic, strife-filled, evil and unkind place.

But thankfully, fortunately, we, this joyful band of Christians, fervent followers of and believers in Jesus Christ do know that we are in the end times and that we desperately need to get our houses in order if we want to be prepared when our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ returns to earth in splendor and power, or calls us home first.

Yes my people, we are the last bastion of faith, hope, LOVE and peace on the planet! That means we desperately need to come up much higher, ASAP, if we hope to save as many people, and as much of our world as we can. The clock’s a ticking, and Lucifer and his evil minions are working like mad to conquer as much as possible. Therefore the battle won’t be easy, but if we stick together and stand up strong with Jesus, then victory is assuredly ours.

Consequently, on this Monday morning, the first in July 2016, we need to be up and about Christ’s business; no lollygagging and complaining about we tired etc. Yuh think Beelzebub’s people are resting on their laurels? Definitely not! They are already up and about the evil one’s business! So what are we waiting for eh? Let’s get a move on!

And to help us rally round Jesus, let’s sing our Monday Morning Battle Hymn with a soulful explosion of power, harmony and sincerity. All together now! ‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! We, your humble servants, praise your Holy Name and thank you that this Monday morning we have jobs to go to; jobs we don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose here on earth; keeping lives and families together.

We also thank you Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm you’ve wrought in our weary souls over the last two days. It’s that rejuvenation of Spirit which allows us now to sally forth with confidence into the evil, ungodly world that surrounds us, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s wicked taunts, wiles and lies.

But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing your powerful, protective spiritual armour. We surrender our all to you, and humbly ask that you let your incredible aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit, lead and guide all your servants as we go out to meet the enemy in battle.

Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, and thereby further your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy Name of your Son, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. AMEN!’

Now that wasn’t too bad, but you can hear the loudest voices being those of our U.S. friends, because it’s their Independence Day celebration! They don’t have to work today, so they are obviously more exuberant than we Canadians who are now wrapping up our Canada Day celebrations.

Anyway, Happy 4th of July my friends to the South! Enjoy it, but don’t overdo it. Remember Granny’s advice: ‘Mih son, please, ah beg yuh, drunk or sober, please mind yuh business!’

And Granny knew what she was talking about, because when we get too celebratory, we tend to lose our sense of right and wrong, and that opens up a toehold for the enemy to get into our souls and create havoc. And that we definitely can’t allow.

And that brings us to our Bit; truth of the indisputable kind! ‘They speak vanity (idly, falsely) every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with double heart (an inconsistent mind) do they speak.’

Yes friends, things like, truth, honesty and good neighbourly relations have gone the way of the dodo bird, have become extinct! Nowadays, it’s like every man for himself, the first person pronoun; ‘me, mine, myself and I,’ seem to be prevailing sentiment, as evil and evildoers run rampant across the earth.

But it’s our job to stop them my fellow believers…and we can, if we’d only get serious about our bounden duty, and stop allowing them to cause dissension and divisions amongst God’s flock. For they are the past masters of the art of divide and conquer, and we are allowing them to do just that with Christ’s church.

As Bruh David says in Psalm 41 – Abuse and assurance: ‘Mine enemies speak evil of me, when shall he die, and his name perish? And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity (empty words): his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.’ (Ps.41:5-6)

But you know my brethren, times are so bad and deceitful now, that you need to be more wary of your friends because they now behave like enemies too.

And we’ll end with this cry of Bruh David in Psalm 55, against deceitful friends. ‘For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him. But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide (companion), and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company (the throng)’ (Ps.55:12-14)

Then he calls down a quick death upon them and their wickedness, and declares thus: ‘As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.’ (Ps.55:16-17)

Oh my people, I can’t give you any better advice than that! So please, let’s keep calling on our great and ever-faithful God nuh, let’s keep looking to Him for salvation, for He is indeed the ONLY ONE able to grant it! Much LOVE!

…be very careful of whom you allow into your inner sanctum…for they might just turn out to be a Trojan horse…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 3 July 2016 Psalm 12:2

Psalm 12:2.   They speak vanity (idly, falsely) every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with double heart (an inconsistent mind) do they speak.

‘And another one bites the dust…!’

Yes friends, another of my university mates shed his earthly body yesterday and moved on to meet his Maker in the spiritual realm. We’re talking about the Rt. Hon. Patrick Augustus Mervyn Manning, (1946-2016) ex-Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. The cause of death is reputedly acute myeloid leukemia (blood cancer). That now leaves only a few of us. (smile)

It’s strange though that when one of your classmates dies, how it gets you to thinking of your own mortality. But unfortunately there’s not much we can do about it, so we might as well enjoy life to the best of our ability, for when the Grim Reaper calls, we have no option but to go.

Well what can I say about Paddy Manning eh? I met him way back in 1966 when we were both freshmen on the University of the West Indies (U.W.I) campus in Mona Jamaica, where we lived in the same Hall of Residence, Irvine Hall. Paddy was always pleasant and friendly, full of jokes, emitting that shy, innocent smile on his round, boyish face that the ladies seemed to like.

Over the three years there we became decent friends and associates. We did have some fun times together; engaging in a couple of escapades, partying a fair amount, beating pan in the Irvine Hall Playboys Steel Band, and riding his Lambretta scooter around the campus and the surrounding Mona environs.

At that time nobody really knew that Paddy had political ambitions, for he always played his cards close to his chest and never got involved in campus politics as some other well-known political animals did. The one instance most people might remember is when he ran for Hall Chairman and lost.

But other than that, Paddy was just an ordinary fun-loving young man like most of us, so I was most surprised when I heard that he had gotten involved in politics.

Unfortunately, the last time I saw him was around 1983, he was just a regular Cabinet Minister then, and sadly, I didn’t visit T&T for some thirty years after that, so we never got a chance to hook up.  In the last couple of years when I went down there I tried to see him, but he was either too sick to receive visitors or was off the island.

Obviously I can’t say anything about his political administration since I wasn’t living there during that time, but I did hear stories, good, bad and indifferent. I won’t judge him because that’s not my place.

I will end my little eulogy though with a rather appropriate statement from another school and band and roommate of his, William Lau. ‘Whatever one’s opinion, Patrick’s place in Trinidad and Caribbean history is set.’

And that no one can deny my friends. My sincere condolences go out to his family. Rest in peace, Paddy mih brother!

Now let’s turn to our Bit, from Psalm 12 –A plea from Bruh David against the wicked. But first let’s set the scene with the verse that comes before it. ‘Help, Lord (save me); for the godly man ceaseth: for the faithful fail (disappear) from among the children of men.’ (Ps.12:2)

And if that isn’t the gospel truth in these abominable times, I don’t know what is! Yeh mih breddren, godly and faithful men and women are going out of style, or have already gone out of style in these evil, godless days.

And Bruh David continues: ‘They speak vanity (idly, falsely) every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with double heart (an inconsistent mind) do they speak.’

More indisputable truth precious people! For lies and falsehood and fraud and double speak and flattery are what emanate from most mouths in this day and age. The evil tendencies of man are highlighted in these troublesome times.

But please note Bruh David’s sure statement as he writes on. ‘The Lord shall cut off (destroy) all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud (great) things. Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?’ (Ps.12:3-4)

Ah friends, what foolish and ignorant people are they? For they obviously don’t know that their lips are not their own; that there entire body and all their possessions belong to the Lord God Jehovah who made heaven and earth and all therein!

Now listen to the psalmist from Psalm 10, as he prays for the overthrow of the wicked. ‘The wicked through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts (he thinks; There is no God)… He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity (trouble). His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud (oppression): under his tongue is mischief (trouble) and vanity (iniquity).’ (Ps.10:4, 6-7)

Oh friends, it surely seems like the psalmists are writing about our current world and the atrocities that are taking place in it. If they thought that mankind was evil and wicked back then, those of today have mastered the art, and can certainly teach them a thing or two about evil and wickedness.

But what those followers of Lucifer don’t realize is that the Lord God Almighty, He of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, is still on His throne in the high heavens, watching down on them only waiting for the right moment to pounce on them.

And Bruh David spells it out thus: ‘For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord; I will set him in safety (for which he yearns) from him that puffeth at him.’ (Ps.12:5)

Yes friends, the Lord will eventually settle all debts and wrongs that the poor and needy and righteous have suffered. How do we know that? Bruh David tells us. ‘The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.’ (Ps.12:6-7)

That’s a faithful promise and heavenly truth my brethren! We can count on it! So let’s faithfully go out to church this Sunday morning, unafraid of the evil-doers that lurk around us, and joyously praise and worship our Creator, for that’s what He expects, and also what he deserves. Much LOVE!

…Jesus Christ has already defeated hell, death and the grave…so there’s no need to be afraid of evil and its purveyors…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 6 February 2016 John 3:17

John 3:17.   For God sent not his Son into world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Ah mih people, it’s a somewhat rough Saturday morning because when I opened my e-mail this morning I got some info re the funeral service of my old University pardner, Paul Emmanuel Lawrence. Just like I opened my e-mail a couple of weeks ago and found out about his unexpected passing.

But what to do eh friends? Not much really, we just have to move on, while enjoying the memories we made with each other. That’s what memories are for, so please be sure to make some good ones. As Johnny Bristol says in his old song; ‘Memories don’t leave like people do. They always stay with you. Whether they’ve been good or bad. They’re never something that you had.’

And we had plenty good ones, Pablo mih brother; whether it was beating pan, going to lectures, fetes, just hanging out on the campus, or going down to your home in Montego Bay, or going to other places which I can’t mention. (smile). Anyway mih brother, you certainly had a kind and generous heart, and you’re no doubt giving free rein to it now in heaven too. Till we meet again on that great day. Much LOVE!

Yeh friends, it’s not easy when your peers are passing away, because it suddenly makes you think about your own mortality. But that’s the only thing we’re sure about in this life, for sometimes you might be able to get away from taxes, but you can never cheat the grim reaper. So let’s just live life and enjoy it under the shelter of God’s mighty arms.

And I’d now like to apologize for a typographical error on yesterday’s Bit. Hn! That’s just giving it a nice name, but it really stemmed from pure laziness on my part. I don’t know how many of you noticed that the heading of the Bit said the Bible verse was ‘Psalm 40.4’ when the actual Bit came from 1 Peter.

That’s because I simply copied the previous day’s heading and then forgot to change. And somehow I never notice these things until after I send them out. But it only goes to show the ole fella’s humanity and fallibility. (smile)

Ah mih people, life can be rough, but please remember that our God is good! Now here is how I had planned to open today’s Bit until I got those e-mails about Pablo’s funeral. It’s a song that I shared some time last year, and while partying out on my patio last night with the duchess I happened to play it, and got the zeppo that it was time to highlight it again, because the times they are a getting worse and Christ’s people need another wake up call.

So here are the words of Johnny Reid’s marvellous, motivational and inspirational song starting with the chorus ‘Today I’m going to try and change the world. Gonna take it one day at a time. I’ve made my resolution, opened up my eyes. Today I’m going to try and change the world.

I’m gonna say hello to my neighbour, going to greet him with a smile, and shake the hand of a stranger, sit and talk to him for a while. Gonna tell someone I LOVE them, from the bottom of my heart. (chorus) Today I’m gonna try and change the world….

Gonna make sure my children know right from wrong. Never turn my back on those in need, always gonna try to see myself through another’s eyes. Today I’m going to try and change the world. I made my resolution, opened up my eyes. Today I’m going to try and change the world.’

Oh my fellow believers in Christ, that’s just what Christ is calling us to do; to make a serious resolution to change the world with His help, because it desperately needs changing! So please let’s join together today to do that nuh! And all it takes is one day at a time!

Hear the wonderful sentiments nuh: say hello to our neighbour, greet him with a smile. That’s not difficult to do, and a simple hello and a smile can ofttimes mean so much to others. Then shake a stranger’s hand and exchange a few words with him or her. Wow! What a Christ-like act! And remember friends, our God has a welcoming heart for strangers as we see all through the Bible. That means we too must have a welcoming heart towards strangers.

Oh, then tell someone we LOVE them from the bottom of our hearts! Mama Mia! What can be more Christ-like and endearing than that eh my brethren? Nothing really, if our greeting is sincere! And I just LOVE this next sentiment: make sure my children know right from wrong!

Oh my people, that is the basic panacea for what ails our world! We’ve not done a very good job on that front at all, otherwise our children would not be so lost and fragile that they can fall for all the nonsense the evil world has to offer. And it’s not too late my people. Remember while there is life there is ALWAYS hope, hope in Jesus, who can do ALL things!

And hear this other strong point of Jesus nuh; never turn my back on those in need! Oh fellow believers in Christ, that’s exactly what He did when He came down here from heaven to save us from the fiery halls of Hades; He offered us help in our time of need! Now it’s only appropriate that we should do the same for our fellow man.

And this last sentiment will help us to do all of them; try to see ourselves through the eyes of another person. Oh Glory to God my people!

When we can truly do that, and let it control our actions and emotions, then we are indeed being truly Christ-like! For we never truly know what others are going through and why they behave the way they do. So let’s stop being as judgmental as we now are nuh, because it’s the mark of a true Christian!

Oh friends, it’s obvious that the passion is flowing through the ole fella this morning, (smile) so please, I implore us, let’s not allow it to go to waste nuh, because it will also be a sad waste of Jesus’ sacrifice. As our Bit so wonderfully proclaims, in Jesus’ own words: ‘For God sent not his Son into world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.’

Oh my people, if God sacrificed His Son to save us, why can’t we sacrifice a little of ourselves to help save our children, our neighbours, our friends, our families and our badly suffering world eh? That is just simple common sense in a heart beating for Christ! Much LOVE!

…let’s open up our eyes…and make that resolution…to try and change the world…one day at a time…TODAY…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 11 January 2012 Matthew 22:39‏

Matthew 22:39.    And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself.

Oh Friends, it’s a new day, and all’s well! Okay, so I might be a tad crazy for saying that, (smile) but if we look closely and truthfully at many of what we consider problems, we’ll find that they are mere hiccups with which we can either live comfortably, or handle in our stride with God. We’ve become such a soft, whining, petty society that now we complain loudly about things we wouldn’t have even mentioned a decade ago. However, in trying to get this LOVE Revolution train on a fast, safe and positive track, I found a quote that’s very appropriate for the next step. Yesterday we spoke about God’s LOVE for us and ours for Him. The next step for us to master is found in this quote from David G. Jones: ‘In LOVING myself I gain the power of identity that is necessary before LOVE for others is possible.’ Friends, I find that to be very truthful. We can’t truly LOVE someone else until we’re capable of LOVING ourselves. And LOVING ourselves doesn’t mean a selfish, narcissistic fixation on oneself, but appreciating our good points – and we all have some – while not allowing the bad ones to make us feel unworthy. I believe that the LOVE of self that exists today is the more selfish, chest pounding, egotistic actions that’s so encouraged, rather than the I’m comfortable in my skin, in who I am, in whom the Lord made me to be. Now learning to LOVE ourselves is no easy task, especially if we’re not living up to our expectations. However, that doesn’t mean we’re unworthy or unLOVABLE. We need to accept ourselves, offer ourselves the same kind of breaks, care, kindness and acceptance that we offer others. That’s why Jesus broke down the commandments to two: LOVE thy God, ‘And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself.’ How can we LOVE our neighbours in the spirit that Jesus advocates if we don’t first LOVE ourselves eh? Oh my people, it all boils down to the old adage; ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ That’s the practical reality of LOVING your neighbour as yourself. You ought to treat your neighbour the way you’d like him/her to treat you. And it doesn’t mean being all goody goody and syrupy, but just being decent to others. Unfortunately though, it seems like a lot of us in this current world don’t like ourselves, judging from the terrible way we treat others. And that stems from the high level of selfishness that permeates our society. In many minds, it’s okay to treat others like garbage, but Lord forbid anybody treating us the same way. Remember the T&T saying; ‘do so ent like so.’ Sadly, this state of mind is very prevalent amongst the wealthy and those in power. Ah Friends, it’s time we start taking the way we treat others seriously, for what goes around comes around. As the Good Book makes a habit of saying from Genesis to Revelation; ‘whatever you sow you’ll reap.’ And that’s gospel! Oh my people, we can’t expect to mount a LOVE Revolution, a return to the God of our fathers, unless we show the practical side of LOVE: feeding the hungry, tending to the sick, helping the widows and orphans, caring for the poor. That’s the true test of Christianity! I’ll remind us again that Christianity is an action movement! Jesus went around mostly DOING good everyday, not simply talking it, like we tend to do nowadays. That’s what LOVING your neighbour as yourself means; wanting them to be as comfortable as you are. Oh Friends, there’s far too much poverty, starvation, sickness, greed and oppression in our world to ever say that we’re keeping the second great commandment. And it’s not a new commandment either, because way back in the wilderness, the Lord told Moses to inform the Israelites: ‘but thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.’ (Lev.19:18b) So Jesus was just reiterating the centuries old directive of His Father. And Bruh Paul, in talking to the Roman church about walking in LOVE, had this to say. ‘Owe no man anything, but to LOVE one another: for he that LOVETH another hath fulfilled the law. For this Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill (murder), Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended (summed up) in this saying, namely, Thou shalt LOVE thy neighbour as thyself. LOVE worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore LOVE is the fulfilling of the law.’ (Rom.13: 8-10) Ah mih breddren, I don’t know what else to say to get us to accept ourselves with all our frailties, and be as good to ourselves as we are to others. It’s a veritable conundrum: we need to LOVE others like we LOVE ourselves, but far too often we don’t really LOVE ourselves the way we ought to. And until we do, our world can’t really get on the right track, so let’s ponder these things nuh, look deeply at the relationship we have with ourselves and then try to bring it into line with what we know our God desires for us. I sure hope this all makes sense. But if it doesn’t, then I hope you all are wise enough to pick sense from nonsense. (smile) Much LOVE!…until the engine of the LOVE Train is firing on all cylinders…the LOVE Revolution won’t be as effective as it ought…
