Mark 5:36.        Be not afraid, only believe.

And then it was lazing around Saturday… How nice it is to have one day in the week to just do as one pleases; to do nothing, or to do a lot, but it’s all up to you, with no boss constantly hanging around, watching to see how many breaks you take, or how much work you are actually doing. Now, sometimes, especially in our current society with little or no integrity or work ethic, it’s necessary for the boss to keep a close eye on us, but it’s still uncomfortable to have someone always watching your movements. That won’t happen today…unless it’s your spouse praying that you would get your lazy self, up off the couch and go do the household chores you’ve been putting off for so long. (smile) 

And our Saturday chore is to look at the quotes our friend Anselm sent us this past week, as he aspires to inspire us for a better tomorrow, and see how they interact with our Christian walk. And the first one says: ‘You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.’ Now that’s gospel truth! Those two polar opposites together will never create something beautiful. It’s like God and Satan, sin and grace, or oil and water. They just don’t mix in a pleasurable way. And it’s obvious that a positive mindset, one that keeps God first place, that concentrates on building, is always better than the negative opposite, where Satan is simply intent on destroying anything that we build. 

It’s like walking in the flesh, or carnality, and walking after the Holy Spirit, like Bruh Paul talks about in his letter to the Roman church. ‘For they that are after the flesh do mind (set their minds on) the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.’ (Rom. 8:5-8) 

Yes friends, it’s the same way with a positive and negative mindset, it’s either one or the other, for never the twain shall ever meet successfully. That segues very nicely into this next quote. ‘One small positive thought can change your whole day.’ More wonderful truth my people. That’s the power of positive thinking, as opposed to negative thinking. One good and positive thought early in the morning can brighten up our entire day. Likewise, one negative thought can ruin our whole day if we allow it to, it can steal our wonderful joy. 

And that’s exactly what the enemy tries to do when he comes storming into our minds with his negative, ungodly and sinful ideas. But we need to be like seed that’s sown on good and fertile soil and reject them as soon as possible. That’s why Peter sternly warns us to ‘Be sober, be vigilant; because the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in (being experienced by) your brethren that are in the world.’ (1 Pet. 5:8-9) 

Ah mih people, the vengeful enemy is all over, trying to bring down the people of faith with the same basic temptations, so nothing that we are going through is new, or unique to any of us. Remember, he has no real power over us, unless we give it to him. For he’s just a toothless lion with a big roar. But we cannot afford to give the enemy even one small toehold in our lives, otherwise he will turn it into a stronghold, and have us eating out of his hand in that matter. That brings us to this quote: ‘Believe you can and you’re halfway there.’ 

Now, I don’t know if simple belief will get you halfway to your destiny, (smile) but it will certainly give you the right beginning, the right start, because if you don’t believe you can complete or achieve whatever you have in mind, you most certainly won’t succeed. Belief is indeed the most important aspect of any project or programme. Like we said above, it’s the positive mindset that engenders faith and hope in whatever we desire to do. 

What did Jesus say to Jairus, one of the synagogue rulers, when they came and told him his daughter was dead? Just these simple words: ‘Be not afraid, only believe.’ (Mark 5:36) And when Martha hesitated over rolling away the stone from the grave of her brother Lazarus, Jesus told her: ‘Said I not unto thee, that if thou wouldest believe , thou shouldest see the glory of God?’ (John 11:40) So friends, belief might not get us halfway to the end, but it will most definitely create the right and necessary attitude that will put us on the path to victory! 

Consequently, the following quote also becomes important in our faith walk. ‘Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.’ Yes, it all has to do with positivity, hope, faith and belief in God Almighty! When we look forward to good things and tidings, with a strong faith, they tend to happen. That’s why the psalmist declared…ah Lord eh! Would you believe I spelled that wrong? I don’t know what it is with me and that word nuh, in all its forms too. I even refuse to try and write it again now. (smile) But like the psalmist said, and we should always say: ‘This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.’ (Ps. 118:24) 

Now that gives us a positive, faithful expectation that each day will be good! Oh, we do know that every day will not really be good, because that’s just the nature of life with its up and downs, but more often than not, when we expect it to be good, it will turn out that way. Like Sister Joyce (Joyce Meyer) likes to say: ‘Something good is going to happen to me today. And something good is going to happen through me today!’ There’s just something about faithful expectations that put us in a better frame of mind, even when the circumstances aren’t favourable. 

And the last quote says: ‘I will go anywhere as long as it’s forward.’ Now it’s very important to go forward and not backward in life. However, anywhere forward is not the best place, because that could also mean forward with the devil and his satanic cohorts. What we should be saying is that we would go anywhere forward with Jesus as our guide and leader! That’s because we need to end up like Bruh Paul said to Timothy. ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course (race), I have kept the faith.’ (2 Tim.4:7) 

Yes, my fellow saints in Christ, the only true way forward is with our Lord and Saviour! Any other way leads only to destruction and damnation! Therefore, let’s spend some time on this lazy Saturday pondering the state of our race nuh. Are we fighting a good fight, running strongly in our race, keeping the faith like we ought to? Or do we need to pick it up some? I believe that we can ALL come up somewhat higher and better than we’re currently doing because the world desperately needs us right now. So please, let’s ask the Lord to help us do just that nuh. Once it’s for His glory, we know He’ll never refuse to help. Much LOVE!

Psalm 107:29.     He maketh the storm to calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

Well friends, it’s Saturday and there’s work to be done around the house, errands to run and shut in people to visit. Wow! For some of us it doesn’t seem like a day off at all, and we’re tempted to go to our place of employment, where we don’t work half as hard. (smile) 

But for some blessed individuals, it’s a much easier go; just sleeping in late, snoozing on the couch, idly flipping the channels on the remote,  watching golf and baseball, hockey and basketball, while sipping something cold and frothy and drowsily but sincerely saying, ‘Praise the Lord!’ 

Yes mih people, some do have it easier than others. But since it’s Saturday, we also have to check out some of our friend Anselm’s quotes for this week. And he does have some excellent ones this week. 

Listen to this first one. ‘Each problem has hidden in it an opportunity so powerful that it literally dwarfs the problem. The greatest success stories were created by people who recognized a problem and turned it into an opportunity.’ And that’s gospel truth my brethren! Problems are in fact opportunities for us to grow. Note that it’s only when we face adversity that we mature, especially in our Christian walk. 

And this next quote follows on naturally. ‘We can’t escape pain; we can’t escape the essential nature of our lives. But we do have a choice. We can give in and relent, or we can fight, persevere, and create a life worth living, a noble life. Pain is a fact; our evaluation of it is a choice.’ There again friends, we can’t escape pain or problems, but we can choose how to handle them; either by cringing and complaining, or by standing strong and using the adversity to our benefit. 

And this one also segues nicely to the one before. ‘You cannot tailor-make the situations in life but you can tailor-make the attitudes to fit those situations.’ It’s all about attitudes my people; our attitudes to our problems can either make or break us. And this last quote just wraps it up nicely. ‘Being miserable is a habit; being happy is a habit; and the choice is yours.’

Oh is that ever so true my fellow believers! The choice is all ours. That means if we want to have a fairly happy and peaceful life we must choose attitudes that relate to happiness and peace. Remember with Jesus as our captain, we can remain calm in any storm. 

Now listen to the psalmist as he tells his story. ‘They that go down to the sea in ships; that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. 

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm to calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then they are glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.’ (Ps.107:23-30) 

Ah friends that reminds me of a personal testimony to that situation. One day, some thirty something years ago, I ended up on a boat with some friends and coworkers who were headed for Rochester on the American side of Lake Ontario. To cut a long story short, going across the day was sunny and beautiful and we finally got to the American side, but up to now we haven’t reached Rochester. (smile) 

Through the obvious presence of the brown girl in the bottle and several strong imbibers, arguments broke out about continuing down the American coast to Rochester or returning to Toronto. The captain and owner of the boat eventually decided to come back to Toronto. This was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 

But lo and behold, on our way back a serious storm rose up against us and we could barely make any headway against it. And yuh better believe that prayer, for the first time in many a day, was forthcoming from several of the inebriated imbibers. It’s a good thing I wasn’t into the sauce that day, so I was able to help the skipper, while the others were rolling around, hanging on, giving drunken orders and praying. 

Now that day I learned a couple of lessons. The first one is that Lake Ontario can be very dangerous. I would be passing along the shore and see it kicking up and steups at it, saying it was nothing like the ocean I was accustomed to, and wondering how big ships like the Edmund Fitzgerald could sink and get lost in it.

But friends, that night I learned otherwise. For when the boat, I guess it was around fifteen feet long, mounted up the massive waves, I saw the good Lord in his heaven. (smile) And when it hit back down to the depths, between those waves, I felt the shivering of timbers! And that was the second lesson I learned; the actual feeling of shivering timbers. Before that night I had only read it from books. 

And believe me there was even mutiny amongst the group. For when we finally reached land on the Ontario side, somewhere around Cobourg, still many miles from our starting point, we had to stop for gas. At that point, some of the more inebriated ones wanted to use their money to take a taxi home, instead of chip in for the gas. 

But eventually cooler heads prevailed and we all came back together, arriving at our starting point around three o’clock in the morning, having left their around ten a.m. the previous day. And believe me, that was only a synopsis of the whole story. Like my family didn’t know where I was, hadn’t seen or heard from me for at least 20 hours, and the captain’s wife had the coast guard out looking for us. 

Can’t say I haven’t led an adventurous life – but with the grace of God always surrounding me! That’s why I can totally agree with the psalmist when he declares: ‘Oh that men would praise (give thanks to) the Lord for his goodness (LOVING-kindness), to the children of men!’ (Ps.107:31) Much LOVE my brethren!

…without God…where would men be eh…so let’s give Him lots of thanks and praise nuh…and faithfully adhere to His law…

 

 

Today’s Scrip-Bit 12 November 2015 Psalm 95:1‏

Psalm 95:1.   O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise (shout joyfully) to the rock of our salvation.

Ah Friends, these late nights and early mornings going to be the death of the ole fella yes! But I’m just naturally a night owl! (smile) I awoke earlier on, looked at the clock and decided it was time to get up, but then thought I’d just roll over and soak for a while. 

Hn! But it seems that I fell asleep again, and it was almost an hour later that I finally finished soaking. Hn, hn! What a life eh! 

Then I discovered that today, Thursday, was another British type weather day; constant drizzle. Yesterday afternoon turned out beautifully though, with bright sunshine. Let’s hope that today will do the same. 

But regardless of how the day turns out, it is still the day that our great and wonderful God has made, filled with plenty new blessings and mercies, so let us rejoice and be glad in it, as we were meant to do. 

Now here is something I’ve been trying to share for about three days now, but was thwarted by the Holy Spirit every time. I guess I wasn’t meant to share it until today. So here it is, something from Gramps Schuller’s (Dr. Robert H. Schuller) Hour of Power Devotional titled ‘LEARN TO KNOW GOD.’  

That’s something we all need to do my people! So please pray with me. ‘Dear Jesus, I’ve got to know you better. Please help me! I can feel my spiritual and emotional walls crack. I can hear old chains break. I can feel my heart opening like a heavy old door whose ancient seals have just begun to break. 

I can sense the footsteps of Jesus walking into my life. I am beginning to experience the joy of a soul that is being saved, a life that is being born again. Thank You, Lord! Life’s not fair, but God is good. Amen.’ 

Yes Friends, our God is definitely good, no doubt about it! So hopefully, if we prayed that prayer sincerely, at whatever level of maturity in Christ that we are currently at, we will soon hear new doors opening and feel Jesus beginning to move at a higher level in our lives. 

For remember, it’s all a lifetime process, and we never finish learning and maturing until we take our final earthly breath. And to help us do that, in terms of the praise and thanksgiving aspect, we’ll continue our series of messages along those lines. 

And our Bit once again wisely invites us: ‘O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise (shout joyfully) to the rock of our salvation.’ 

Oh Friends, there’s nothing better in this life than giving thanks and praise to our most wonderful and ever-LOVING God! Why? Because that’s one of the main things we were created for! 

But unfortunately we have relegated it to the back parts of our Christian walk. You don’t hear believers singing as often and as joyfully as we once did, because we have been caught up in, entangled by the tentacles of the evil world and all its false and deceptive deeds and teachings. 

But today my brethren, we’re going to attempt to correct that with some joyful scripture. Here is Bruh Paul’s prescription to the Ephesians ‘And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (dissipation); but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.’ (Eph.5:18-21) 

Yes my people, we should always be in thanksgiving and praising mode, regardless of our circumstances. Remember how Bruh Paul and Silas reacted during their imprisonment in Philippi? The Good Book tells it thus: ‘And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard.’ (Acts 16:25) 

Yes Friends, even in one the darkest hours of their lives, they were praying and singing hymns, giving glory to God. And you know what happened; an earthquake came and broke down the prison gates, but none of the prisoners fled, which all led to the saving of the jailer and his family, and no doubt some of the other prisoners also. (Acts 16:26-34) 

So you see my fellow believers in Jesus Christ, there is no telling what our God will do when we praise and glorify Him, even in our saddest times. James says it quite right. ‘Is any among you afflicted (suffering)? let him pray. Is any merry (cheerful)? let him sing psalms.’ (James 5:13) 

And Asaph, in Psalm 50 – God is the judge – tells us what our God desires of us. ‘Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the Most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.’ (Ps.50:14-15) 

Yes Friends, whenever we sincerely and faithfully call upon our God, we give Him a chance to deliver us, and thus glorify His Holy Name. And we’ll end with these beautiful and most assuring words from Psalm 92 – Praises for the Lord’s goodness. 

‘It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High: To show forth (declare) thy LOVING-kindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery (lute or lyre); upon the harp with a solemn (harmonious or melodic) sound. For thou Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.’ (Ps.92:1-4) 

Oh my people, my people, please, I’m imploring us to ramp up our acts of praise and thanksgiving to our God and Creator, regardless of our circumstances. 

Why? Because when we come to Him in praise and thanksgiving, it gives Him an opportunity to work miracles in our lives and thus raise the level of our faith and trust. It’s wisdom at its best! Much LOVE!

…O sing unto the Lord a new song…sing unto the Lord…all the earth… sing unto the Lord…bless his name…show forth (proclaim the good news of) his salvation…from day to day… (Ps.96:1-2)
