Today’s Scrip-Bit 2 February 2014 Ephesians 1:3

Ephesians 1:3.   Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

Oh Friends, oh Friends, our God is a great and most wonderful Deity! Please give Him praise and thanks, oodles and oodles of it, for He is most deserving of our thanks and praise!

And I say that, because as I walk down memory lane today, I note where in the past two weeks He’s unexpectedly brought so many people from my past into my present orbit. Thank You Lord! And from the very depths of my soul, again I say, Thank You!

It has certainly been interesting and overwhelming to say the least, for like every day, someone else just unexpectedly comes out of the woodwork. And that shouldn’t be so surprising since our God majors in the unexpected.

And talking about the unexpected, yesterday afternoon while hanging out at the Duchess’ friend’s bar with my Uncle Foster, who had earlier come from Trinidad to visit me, my cell phone rang.

When I answered it, I discovered that it was another old friend from school days, who was also in town. He now resides in New York, and I had seen him at Caribana in Toronto a few years ago, so the time span between contact wasn’t as great as with so many others.

But while talking to him, I learned that since I last saw him, he had gone through several surgeries for some internal problems. And that was after having been through many more  before that. It’s good to see that he has that fighting, never say die, never give up attitude.

And it’s also nice to know that he gives the Bit some credit for helping him make it through some of the rough times, both in the hospital and at home. He says it helps him keep his faith strong, and not give in to self-pity and the desire to give up this painful earthly life.

I went to visit him this morning after church, and he does look strong, but he has to go back to Trinidad for some tests and other medical procedures tomorrow. Let’s pray that the Lord will bless him and cause everything to go all right. His name is Anthony Massiah, so please remember him in your prayers.

And that was about all the out of the ordinary memories I made yesterday, because after dropping my Uncle Foster home, we just came home and relaxed, watched the Leafs beat Ottawa in a high-spirited ice-hockey game, then went to bed, got up this morning and went to church.

On the church matter though my fellow believers, I was greatly disappointed to see the small number of people in the congregation. If you were to put everybody together, it might have taken up possibly one quarter of the church.

Now that certainly doesn’t speak well of the church’s health. But I’m not privy to their problems, so I can’t offer any positive critique and /or advice. I just know that the three times I’ve been there recently, the crowds were noticeably smaller than the two occasions on my last trip to Tobago, some fifteen months ago.

Ah Friends and fellow believers, we need to pray for the state of Christ’s church all over the world, because in many cases, for one reason or another, the numbers are sadly dwindling, and we definitely can’t allow that negative trend to continue. Through heartfelt prayer and seriously addressing the problems causing this fall away, we need to actively participate in the renewal of Christ’s earthly body, for it’s a godly trust given to us, to strengthen and grow it.

Unfortunately though, for whatever reasons, we’re falling down on the job. And how can we allow that to happen after reading our Bit eh? ‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.’

Yesterday we saw how many things, faithful blessings and benefits, those few words of Bruh Paul contained. And continuing on, we note even more blessings and benefits.

‘According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in LOVE: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children (as sons) by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.’ (Eph.1:4-5)

Yes Friends, the Lord chose us to be His adopted children through Jesus, long before He even laid the foundations of the world! That means, even before time began He was totally interested in us, LOVING us, through His own will, not through anything we would or could do. He had set us apart, sanctified us, to be holy and blameless before Him, walking in LOVE.

Now here are a few interesting notes from the scholars. ‘1:4. The connecting thought linking verses 3 and 4 is this: Just as (According as) God has blessed believers with every spiritual blessing “in Christ” (v.3), so in like manner it was in (or by) him that he hath chosen us. God never intended to bless man apart from Christ. All God does for man, He does through His Son.’

And they continue: ‘1:4-5. The last two words of verse 4 (in LOVE) may well belong to verse 5; the link between verb forms in these two verses is expressed in this rendering: “He chose us…in that He LOVINGLY predestined us.” So the divine choice of verse 4 is further defined by the divine predestination of verse 5.

Predestinated means “marked out in advance,” “determined or appointed beforehand.” Prior to creation God appointed those who would believe unto (or, for) the adoption of children; that is, He appointed them to be His sons. This divine appointment was according to (because of) the good pleasure of his will; it was due not to anything good in ourselves, but due solely to His kindness.

These verses stress the divine sovereignty in salvation. Verses 12 and 13, which mention our trust and belief in Christ, emphasize the human responsibility in the process.’

Yes my people, the Lord put a whole lot of thought and LOVE into His plan of creation, putting us believers first in it. We therefore owe Him a large debt of gratitude and thanks for all those wonderful benefits and blessings He’s currently showering down on us, and also has stored up in heavenly places, marked with our names.

So please, let’s endeavor to do a better job of living and working for Him than we’re presently doing nuh. Yuh know all He asks of us is just to try and follow in the footsteps of His Son, become more like our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. That’s not too much to ask, after all He’s done for us. Much LOVE!

…to know, know, know, Him…is to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Him…

P.S. Oh Friends, the wife just called me outside on the balcony to see a beautiful rainbow, after a light shower of rain. Mama Mia! It seems like I only see rainbows in Tobago. (smile) The last one I saw was coming over in the plane from Trinidad on my last visit. I’ll take it as the harbinger of good tidings. Much LOVE!

Today’s Scrip-Bit 19 January 2014 Psalm 5:3

Psalm 5:3.    My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

Oh Friends, it’s been another wonderful day on God’s Little Acre! Glory Hallelujah!

After church this morning, where a lady preached a sermon on sacrifice that brought tears to my eyes, and brunch at the nearby Magdalena hotel, the Duchess and I came home around 2 p.m. and just slept away the afternoon. I guess the old bones were just tired from all our cavorting. (smile)

Now I’m trying to get myself together so I can write a sensible Bit. Hn, hn! The Duchess is out on the balcony blagging to some long lost friend. But once she is happy, everything is all right in my world.

Anyhow, I saw this quote in my One Day More Devotional- Daily Meditations for People with Chronic Illness, and though I believe I’ve shared it already, it is worthwhile sharing again. It’s attributed to one Kyle Crichton, and says: ‘Life is a pretty precious and wonderful thing. You can’t sit down and let it lap around you… you have to plunge into it, you have to dive through it.’

And that’s the gospel truth Friends! Life is indeed a beautiful and precious thing – but only when you jump into it without too many reservations, especially if you are suffering from some chronic illness. It’s like learning to swim; you’ll never learn if you only stay in the safe, shallow areas, you need to jump off the deep end and realize what it  feels like to be drowning. And I can talk about that from personal experience, a long time aback. It certainly wasn’t as thrilling then, as it seems now though. (smile)

Yes my people, life is an advantageous system, a bully, so you can never allow it to get the better of you, otherwise it’s just going to keep on beating you down. So regardless of our physical condition, we have to take life by the horns and use it to our advantage. Shying away from life is the worst thing we can ever do, for that’s when the evil Lucifer will get into our minds and cause even more havoc than we’re already experiencing.

And the best way to handle life my people, is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ! And all God’s people shouted out a long and loud ‘Amen!’

Yes Friends, accepting Jesus’ saving grace and submitting to His perfect will through obedience and prayer, is the answer to all life’s problems. Bruh David put it quiet nicely in our Bit, when he offered up his prayer for protection. ‘My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.’

Ah my people, there’s no way to a truly successful earthly life, followed by one in heaven, than through sincere and heartfelt prayer!

And we’ll continue looking at some scriptures that highlight that contention. In Acts 10, we read about the Roman Centurion, Cornelius, who helped to ease the pressure of the Jewish people under the harsh, authoritarian Roman laws. The Good Book describes him thus: ‘A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms (many charitable gifts) to the people, and prayed to God always.’ (Acts 10:2)

Cornelius was one of the first Gentiles to be saved. But as the scholars so wisely point out: ’10:2-4. Though Cornelius’s good works and prayers served as a memorial, they did not save him. He was saved after he heard the gospel of Jesus Christ. See verse 44; 11:10-14).’

So Friends, regardless of what we do, the most important aspect of our earthly life is to receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, for without that monumental decision, all else in this evil, materialistic world is for nought, is worthless! But when we wisely recognize and accept Jesus as being The Way, The Truth, The Light and The Life, then our lives begin to have true meaning!

But my brethren, that’s only the beginning; for then we have to walk a narrow path of obedience intertwined with prayer, so that we can grow in character likeness to Christ, whom God so LOVINGLY sacrificed to pay for our abominable sins, and once again make us worthy to be called His children. And the perfect avenue for walking that walk successfully is down the avenue of prayer.

Listen to how Bruh Paul puts it to his protégé Timothy: ‘I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.’ (1 Tim.2:8) Oh my brethren, that is without a doubt, everlasting truth and godly wisdom!

And the scholars explain it thus: ‘2:8. I will…that men pray every where (or, “I intend…that men in every locality pray”). The Greek word ‘andres’ means ‘males.’ Men are to lead audibly in public prayer; women are to pray silently. This directive remains the same “in every locality,” geography being no factor. The manner in which men are to pray is that of lifting up holy hands, that is, with a pure life, which is without wrath and doubting (disputes).’

Yes Friends, thankfully we no longer hold that only men can pray in public, but also women, otherwise I would have missed out on that moving sermon the lady preached this morning at the Mother’s Union service. However, wherever prayer is publicly uttered, it ought to be backed up by an obedient life and one lacking in doubts, anger, resentment and disputes. In other words, a positive, peaceful, believing life.

And we’ll close there for today. There’s more than enough material for us to ponder on, and try to bring our lives into sync with God’s plan for them. Till tomorrow then, if God is in favour of us meeting again, here on earth. And in the meanwhile, may He bless and keep us all safely under His amazing and enormous wings of LOVE! Much much LOVE my fellow believers!

…to walk this earthly life with God…through the medium of prayer…is the believer’s path to success…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 28 August 2012 1 Peter 4:8

1 Peter 4:8.     And above all things have fervent charity (LOVE) among yourselves: for charity (LOVE) shall cover the multitude of sins.

Oh Friends, we at last had a touch of rain in my area yesterday morning; first time in over a week. And I guess most people were pleased to receive it, but Friends, think about those rather unfortunate people in Haiti, where Hurricane Isaac brought an abnormal amount of rain, wind, flooding and destruction to their already bruised, battered and impoverished lives. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and they’ve now undergone what; two hurricanes and a massive earthquake in the last few years? Ah Lord eh! It’s one calamity after the other. Before they can recover from one, another strikes them! Please my people, let’s pray some serious and heart-rending prayers for them, and also help in whatever other way we can. Please ask the Lord to guide our thoughts and prayers too to those unfortunates in the Dominican Republic and Cuba who felt some of Isaac’s wrath, but certainly not as much as Haiti. And let’s also remember in our words to heaven the people in the Southern U.S. where Isaac is scheduled to do some serious damage. Let’s pray that it will extinguish itself out at sea, and leave the land and people unscathed, cause they already have enough calamity to deal with. And if that’s not in the Lord’s plan, then pray that it will do minimal damage. Can you imagine the suffering that will cause with the serious job and home losses, plus social upheaval, drought and economic decline that’s already plaguing the nation? All I can say my brethren, is that we look to our Bit for guidance in these really troubled times. ‘And above all things have fervent charity (LOVE) among yourselves: for charity (LOVE) shall cover the multitude of sins.’ And that’s an undisputable fact Friends! LOVE does cover an amazing amount of troubles and wrongdoings. Hear how Cousin Sol says it in Proverbs 10. ‘Hatred stirreth up strifes: but LOVE covereth ALL sins.’ (Prov.10:12) That’s why they say LOVE makes the world go round. It can surely handle all kinds of misfortune and negative circumstances. Peter further advises us: ‘Use hospitality one to another without grudging (grumbling) As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.’ (1 Pet.4:9-10) And you know what happens when we don’t take that advice? Listen to Cousin Sol tell it. ‘He that covereth a transgression seeketh LOVE: but he that repeateth a matter separateth very (the best of) friends.’ (Prov.17:9) Gospel truth my brethren, to which many of us can personally attest! For we have all seen and experienced situations where friends keep their peace on certain things, relationships endure and often prosper because of that held tongue. But when the gossip-mongers spread their evil offering, it inevitably breaks up relationships, leaving in their wake, trails of bitterness, anger, resentment and strife. However, as Bruh Paul so wisely and truthfully tells the Corinthians: ‘Charity (LOVE) suffereth long, and is kind; charity (LOVE) envieth not; charity (LOVE) vaunteth not (does not brag) on itself, is not puffed up (arrogant). Doth not behave itself unseemly (rudely), seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no (keeps no accounts of) evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity (LOVE) never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail (cease); whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away (cease).’ (1 Cor.13:4-8) Yes my people; LOVE NEVER FAILS! It is the great reliever of stress, tension, anxiety and all misfortune. Even in the most difficult of times, just a little show or act of LOVE can bring a smile and/or a sense of relief to the unfortunate person’s face and spirit. That’s because it’s the essential essence of our all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful God! And it’s why Bruh Paul thus admonished the Galatians. ‘And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections (its passions) and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory (conceited), provoking one another, envying one another.’ (Gal.5:24-26) My fellow believers, it’s only LOVE that’s given through the Holy Spirit that can cause unity among humans. No wonder Bruh Paul advised the Ephesians. ‘And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.’ (Eph.4:30-32) And therein lies the rub my brethren. That forgiveness of God came to us through His LOVE, otherwise we’d still be tightly enmeshed, wrapped up in sin and discarded unto death. But note, the LOVE of God, through the sacrifice of Jesus, covered not only a multitude of sins, but ALL of the sins of those who believe on His Son. And if you’re one of those fortunate people to have your sins covered by God’s LOVE through Jesus’ death, then please go out and tell and live it, so that the rest of the world can see the great benefits it provides, and come to know and LOVE Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, just like you. As James says: ‘Let him know, that he which converteth (turns) the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide (cover) a multitude of sins.’ (James 5:20) And all God’s people said a loud and sincere ‘Amen!’ Oh Friends, it’s our time to go out and spread some LOVE, if we want things to improve in our world. Let’s do it for Jesus nuh! Much LOVE!…LOVE…it’s the panacea for what ails our world…
