Matthew 7:20.   ​Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
 
Well friends let me begin by apologizing for the fiasco that was yesterday’s Bit. I don’t know how and why it really happened but it did, and consequently, in the header, I made the mistake of quoting the Bit as being from Job 17 instead of Job 27. But I do know that you, my astute and well-versed readers would have known exactly where it came from. (smile)

Please excuse the ole fella for that. But I just hate to make mistakes when writing about the Lord’s word. Oh I know He’s forgiven me, so in your godliness, I hope you will too. (smile) 

And since it’s Saturday, let’s turn to some quotes that our friend Anselm sent us this week, as he nobly aspires to inspire us for a better tomorrow. Here is the first one, which says: ‘Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.’ And that’s oh so true. 

And it’s well encapsulated in a quote from a Rasta breddren who taught me history in High School eons ago. As he thoughtfully scratched his scraggly beard, with his brogued feet up on the desk, he would ask: ‘What is History? And why do we learn History?’ And His answers were: ‘History is a record of the past, and we learn it so we can understand the present and predict the future.’ 

And especially if you are child of God, you need to be continually questioning and learning and growing in the faith; hopefully moving from glory to glory, becoming more Christ-like everyday! 

And the second quote is like unto the first: (smile) ‘Everybody wants to be famous, but nobody wants to do the work. I live by that. You grind hard so you can play hard. At the end of the day, you put all the work in, and eventually it’ll pay off. It could be in a year, it could be in 30 years. Eventually, your hard work will pay of.’ 

Yeah friends, there are no serious rewards without serious work. As the Good Book says, you reap what you sow. And that’s gospel truth. You can’t put in a little work, or only plant a small crop and expect to reap huge rewards and harvest.

And it doesn’t matter how long you have to work hard before you reap those rewards and harvests either, for as the Lord said to the people of Judah through the prophet Azariah, when they were going through tough times: ‘Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.’ (2 Chr.15:7) 

And if you don’t believe that, then listen to Bruh David from Psalm 31: ‘O LOVE the Lord, all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth (fully repays) the proud doer.’ (Ps.31:23)

And if you still don’t believe that, (smile) then listen to Bruh Paul to Timothy: ‘For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn, and the labourer is worthy of his reward (wages).’ (1 Tim.5:17) So friends, whatever effort we put into our work, that is what we will gain from it. 

And all of that runs smoothly into our third and last quote: ‘The value of life is not in its duration, but in its donation. You are not important because of how long you live, you are important because of how effective you live.’ And wiser words were never spoken in that regard my people! 

Listen to this discourse of Jesus on the subject. ‘Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening (ravenous) wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil (bad) fruit.

A good tree cannot bring forth evil (bad) fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.’ (Matt.7:15-20) 

Yes my brethren, it’s ever so important how you live, not so much how long you live. And the longer you live, the more good fruit you are expected to bear in Jesus’ realm. And that good fruit must be exposed to the unbelievers so that they can see it and accept Christ themselves.

That’s why Christ also said that we are the salt and light of the earth, and we’re not supposed to hide our lights under a bushel, for what good is flavourless salt or a hidden light eh? None whatsoever! (Matt.5:13-15) 

And we’ll end with this oh so important admonishing of Jesus on that subject. ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’ (Matt.5:16) Now that friends, is what all we supposed Christians, believers and whatever we call ourselves are supposed to be about. 

But I don’t think we’re doing such a good job; we’re not bearing as much good fruit as we should, or being as flavourful and bright shining to the heathen world! And that’s why Jesus’ LOVE Revolution is faltering; why more people are seemingly leaving it, than joining it. And we just can’t have that my people! 

So today, I implore us to take a good look at ourselves and truly ruminate on the role we are playing in Jesus’ body, where we are falling down, because all of us have faults and foibles, and sincerely make the effort to do better. Let’s take it to God in prayer and ask for His help, for with God’s help, we can all do better! Much LOVE!

…truly living for Jesus means…being flavourful…a bright shining light…and producing good fruit…in this evil, corrupt world…

 

 

Today’s Scrip-Bit 12 November 2016 John 1:9.

John 1:9.     That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

It’s Saturday morning friends, please add one day to your lives! Oh what a joy it is to be blessed by the Almighty with another day of new mercies and blessings, prepared especially for today! We now need to joyfully receive them with praise and thanksgiving and make them an integral part of our lives.

 Now yesterday we celebrated Remembrance Day, remembering our fallen heroes with much pomp and fanfare that we reserve for these occasions, while saying all the right words. However, the sad irony is that the heroes who are still alive are suffering serious lack and want.

 The governments are only paying lip service to the veterans, for they still struggle financially, emotionally, and medically. The hoops these poor and mostly older veterans have to jump through to get their rightful claims are ridiculous and shameful, especially when you consistently honour their dead comrades. 

 It certainly gives the impression that the dead are more important than the living. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything to help the situation, except point it out, hoping that others in more powerful positions will notice and do something, sooner rather than later to help these suffering men and women who fought victoriously for our freedom. 

They should never have to beg and beseech us for anything, since to a large extent they are responsible for the peace that enables us to enjoy our current lavish lifestyle. 

 Anyway, since it’s Saturday and I have said my piece, (smile) let’s move on to a couple of interesting quotes from our friend Anselm, who always aspires to inspire us to greater heights. The first one tells us to ‘Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.’ 

 And that’s good advice! The mistakes of yesterday ought to guide us today, while we sow plenty seeds of hope for tomorrow. But we must also have inquiring minds if we are to succeed in harvesting those seeds of hope in the future. 

Now the second quote says: ‘Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.’ And that is gospel truth friends! Without hope, in fact plenty hope, in these dark and dreary times, we will certainly be overwhelmed by the evil and darkness that surrounds us. 

Only hope, which eventually morphs into faith, gives us the ability to put on rose coloured glasses which light up the darkness and helps us to deal with adversity in a calmer and more reasonable manner. And how do we come by those elements of hope and faith that dispel darkness? 

Easily my people; simply by surrendering, believing, and putting our faith in the safe, secure, powerful and magnanimous hands of the LIGHT OF THE WORLD, Jesus Christ! 

 The Good Book tells us that ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended (apprehended) it not.’ (John 1:1-5) 

Oh friends, those are some of the most important and enlightening verses of the scriptures; tying everything together; from the Word being with God from the very beginning, and being God. Thus God spoke the world into existence. From Him also came life, which was a light for us, His most worthy creation. And that light shines in the darkness of our lives, which the darkness cannot overcome. 

 And the scholars comment: ‘1:4-5 Life…light: See also 8:12; 9:5; 11:25; 14:6. In John’s writings, life represents salvation and deliverance through Christ, and light denotes Jesus’ revelation of God which calls men to accountability.’  

 Everything just keeps running through Christ, my brethren! John the Baptist was even sent specially from God ‘to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.’ (John 1:7) 

 And our Bit tells us: ‘That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.’  Yes my fellow believers, the true Light in our lives is none other than our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Glory to God! 

 The unfortunate thing though is that ‘He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.’ (John 1:10) 

 And the scholars offer these explanations. ‘1:9. Lighteth every man means God’s revelation is universally available. It does not signify universal salvation (cf. v.12; 3:18, 36).’ ‘1:10. Knew: The world did not acknowledge or recognize Him (v.2) as the true Light.’ 

 Much to the world’s detriment I’d say.  But thankfully we Christians have embraced Jesus as the true Light, unlike the hypocritical Pharisees, who sneered at Him in unbelief when He declared to them:  ‘I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record (witness) of thyself; thy record (witness) is not true (valid).’ (John 8:12-13) 

Now who would the Pharisees believe eh? John the Baptist came telling of Christ; they didn’t believe him. Then Christ came and told them, yet they refused to believe because He was His own witness, tooting His own horn, so to speak.  

 And we’ll end with one more comment of Jesus on the subject. When He was about to heal a blind man, He declared: ‘As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ (John 9:5) 

 Oh friends, those words have serious ramifications in our lives today, because Jesus was only the light of the world when He was here, but after He left, we, His believers and followers then became the light of the world, as He says in Matt.5:14. ‘Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.’ 

We are expected to be light, like the old lighthouses which guided ships away from shoals etc. It’s our job to now guide men away from the darkness and evil of Lucifer to the bright light of salvation and eternal life that Jesus provides. Let’s take that job seriously please, and go out and do it diligently, for that’s the only way Christ’s LOVE Revolution will succeed. Much LOVE!

Today’s Scrip-Bit 16 September 2016 Galatians 5:16.

Galatians 5:16.    This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Aye mih people, another great day is ahead of us, courtesy of our wonderful God! So please, let’s use it wisely nuh, guided by the Holy Spirit of God that dwells within us. 

It’s okay to shout ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday and the weekend’s here…’ and what we going to do from what we not going to do, but not if they simply relate to the lustful and dangerous pleasures of the world. 

We desperately need to have better groundings, a better foundation for the way we spend our time off, if we are going to have any kind of godly success in this crazy world of ours. And our Friday Chant provides us with that solid footing, that godly balance that we need. 

So let’s chant it nuh, with sincerity, honesty and truth, praying that it will help us do better than we’re accustomed doing. As one now: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through another week of work! It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through. 

Now, please help me to get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that I can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out and do it all over again next week, furthering your glorious kingdom with each step I take. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.’ 

Yeh friends, that’s a much better template for our weekends, than just wild and crazy, dissolute, leggo beast behaviour, which so many of us unfortunately indulge in when we have the couple of days off. 

That’s why Bruh Paul spent so much time warning us against just such a thing, and gave us this godly direction in our Bit. ‘This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.’ 

Yes my believing brethren, the Holy Spirit was sent to dwell within us so that we would follow it’s godly leading and direction, but first we have to stop and listen to it, otherwise we won’t know what it’s saying or where it wants to guide us. 

And the scholars explain it thus: ‘5:16. Walk in the Spirit (i.e. “live by the Spirit”): Christians are to live with the Spirit’s help. How does one “live by the Spirit”? (1) The Christian must believe that the Spirit is with him, having been sent by God into his heart (4:6). (2) In every spiritual confrontation the believer must yield to the Spirit, that is, submit his own desires to those of the Spirit. 

(3) One must depend on the Spirit for help, enabling him to lead a God-pleasing life (v.5). (4) The believer should anticipate the effects of the Spirit’s help in his daily life. The believer who “lives by the Spirit” will not fulfill (accomplish, carry out) the lust (strong desires) of the flesh (sinful desires).’  

There you have it friends, a scholarly guide as to how the Holy Spirit should operate in our lives. Oh, we know it’s not easy living a godly and spiritual life; it takes patience, perseverance, listening, sacrificing, questioning and praying, but with God’s help we can do it all. 

And why is it so difficult to lead that godly life we so ardently desire? Bruh Paul gives us some indication in the verse after our Bit. ‘For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things ye would.’ (Gal.5:17) 

Ah mih people, it can be a monumental task, a veritable war, if we’re not strong, faithful and persevering. 

Hear how the scholars tell it. ‘5:17. One’s sinful human nature (flesh) and the Holy Spirit lusteth against one another, that is, they have desires and yearnings that are contrary to one another. The Christian, then, is a battlefield, having desires to do good and evil. The outcome is that ye cannot do the things that ye would: the flesh seeks to thwart the Spirit, who, in turn, attempts to frustrate the flesh’s evil desires.’ 

Gospel truth that my people! As Bruh Paul told the Roman church in his missive to them, talking about the struggle of our two natures. ‘For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal (fleshly), sold under sin. 

For that which I do I allow (understand) not: for what I would (want to do), that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto (agree with) the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.’ (Rom.7:14-17) 

What a battlefield of life my brethren! Now listen to this important explanation of the scholars. ‘7:14. The law is spiritual: The law has the characteristics of the Spirit and is consistent with the character of God. I am carnal: What follows is autobiographical and designed to reveal the real struggle the apostle experienced in the flesh. His experience is also exemplary, for it shows the problems all believers experience in their battle with sin.’ 

So friends, if you are experiencing problems in fighting your fleshly desires, don’t beat yourself up, for it’s just a natural part of this earthly life. We will always have problems trying to be godly, even Bruh Paul had a hard time doing what he wanted to do, as per living by the Spirit. 

What we need to do is to be patient and persevering; keep on reading God’s word, studying it, meditating on it, storing it in our hearts for future use, praying, fellowshipping, and listening intently to what the Holy Spirit tells us. 

And we won’t always be successful, but our compassionate and understanding God knows our weaknesses and frailties, and once He sees us sincerely trying, that our hearts and motives are right, He will be forgiving and compassionate. So please, let’s all stand strong and steadfast in His great LOVE, mercy, compassion and grace. Much LOVE!

…fighting our carnal nature…is a full time spiritual job…
