Amos 4:6B.    …yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.

Oh Friends, I don’t know what the weather will be like this Saturday morning nuh, it’s been somewhat miserable, rainy and cloudy, the last few days. But I can assure you that the autumn colours of the dying leaves are very beautiful and varied as they always are.
 
What an anomaly eh? The leaves are dying, but in their death, they are even more colourful than in life. Likewise my people, regardless of the external circumstances surrounding us, we also have the ability to improve them by our behaviour.
 
And here is a quote that enlightens us on that subject and certainly brightens up, enlarges and expands our day with little effort on our part – well sometimes with plenty. (smile)  It comes from the American journalist George Elliston (1883-1946), and says: ‘How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it.’
 
And that my people is gospel, gospel truth! Our lives do light up when we are either touched by the kindness of others, or we touch others with our kindness! Unfortunately though, in our busy and selfish society nowadays, kindness is more the exception rather than the rule it’s supposed to be, and once was. And that is definitely a sad commentary on the type of society we have morphed into.
 
Oh Friends, most of us who are getting up there in age will certainly remember the good old days, when people were generally kind and friendly, when you could go almost anywhere and be assured of a fairly decent reception, of being greeted with a smile or a kind word. Not so nowadays, they’re more likely to rip off your head and give you an earful.
 
The world we currently live in is all about first person singular; me, myself and I. But as faithful believers, ambassadors for Christ, we’re called to be different, just like Jesus was different! Remember, we’re supposed to be only IN the world, not OF it. (John 17:15-16) That means we’re supposed to show kindness, LOVE, mercy and forgiveness, the way our magnanimous God showers them on us.
 
And I’m truly amazed at the negative response some people have to kindness. As I keep telling my family, how you feel towards me is not as important as how you treat me. I want to see positive action, not positive words and negative actions. Anyway Friends, the times we’re living in right now, certainly do resemble the days of depravity and perverseness back in old Israel, and the Lord ended up punishing them.
 
Listen to the Good Book. ‘Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after (every) three years (or days):  And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish (announce) the free offerings: for this liketh you (you love), O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord God. And I also have given you cleanness of teeth (hunger) in all your cities, and want (lack) of bread in all your places: yet ye have not returned unto me, saith the Lord.’ (Amos 4:4-6)
 
Oh my brethren, does that sound like us these days? It certainly does! God’s punishment didn’t reform Israel back then, and doesn’t seem to be doing it for us now either. What a sad state of affairs! Nor was that all of the punishment.
 
The Good Book continues: ‘And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered. So two or three cities wandered unto one (another) city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.’ (Amos 4:7-8)
 
Oh Friends, we are seeing that same sad state of affairs all over our present world with flood and famine and war and strife tearing nations and families apart. But yet we are still following the evil and foolish dictates of Lucifer, rather than the good and positive ones of Almighty God. What is it going to take to turn us around eh; complete destruction. But then it will be too late.
 
Remember Noah and the flood? When He began to build the ark, everybody laughed and thought he’d gone crazy. However, when the rains came pouring down, they all clamoured for a spot in it. But then it was too late. Likewise, my people, if we ignore His warnings, if we wait too long to return to the God of our fathers, then it just might be too late for us too.
 
However, as followers of Jesus, there is one option we do NOT have; that of quitting, of giving up, of stop trying! Just remember that my people. As workers for Christ, we are expected to keep on keeping on, even when it is extremely difficult, confidently bolstered by the faithful promises of our ever-faithful, ever-LOVING God!
 
So though today might look somewhat bleak, both emotionally and weather-wise, let’s put on our spiritual armour, strengthen ourselves with God’s Word, and go out into the evil, godless world and spread kindness, mercy, LOVE and forgiveness in Jesus’ Name! That’s not only true wisdom, but also our bounden duty as Christians! Much LOVE!
 
…even one small deed of kindness here on earth…produces a flurry of excitement and joy in heaven…

Psalm 116:9:    I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Oh Friends, it’s Monday! But before you steups and make yourself miserable, just look ahead and you’ll see our great God’s faithfulness in another beautiful day breaking on the horizon.
 
Yes my fellow believers, the sun is rising in a blaze of glory, but please remember that the SON has already risen in His even bigger blaze of glory, which brought with it, the faithful promise of a brand new life for all of us who believe in Him!
 
With that selfless act, He redeemed our sinful souls from the throes of eternal death and damnation. And if that isn’t something to be extremely glad and thankful for, then I certainly don’t know what is!
 
So on this Monday morning when we’re faced with the difficult task of getting up to go to work, let’s remember what Jesus did for us, and put away all the petty grievances and ills, especially the hangovers from the too hectic Father’s Day celebrations yesterday (smile) and rise and shine like He asked us to.
 
Let’s allow that bright light of His that dwells in us to shine through brightly in our words and actions today as we interact with others in the work world, be they believers or non-believers! That’s the mark of a real follower of Jesus!
 
So with that proper perspective now running in our souls, let’s sing our Monday Morning Battle Hymn with great gusto, for Christ is risen indeed, and so have we, to another glorious day on planet earth, one chock-filled with God’s new blessings and mercies! 
 
Now let’s sing in harmony, as one voice, one body of Christ Jesus, our wonderful Lord and Saviour!
 
‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! We, your humble servants, praise your Holy Name and thank you that this Monday morning we have jobs to go to; jobs we don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose here on earth; keeping lives and families together.
 
We also thank you Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm you’ve wrought in our weary souls over the last two days. It’s that rejuvenation of Spirit which allows us now to sally forth with confidence into the evil, ungodly world that surrounds us, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s wicked taunts, wiles and lies.
 
But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing your powerful, protective spiritual armour. We surrender our all to you, and humbly ask that you let your incredible aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit, lead and guide all your servants as we go out to meet the enemy in battle.
 
Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, and thereby further your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy Name of your Son, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. AMEN!’
 
Awright mih people! That was marvellous! Even the Father applauded and gave us a standing ‘O’! Wow!
 
There’s great joy in heaven this Monday morning Friends, so let’s replicate that joy down here on earth nuh. In light of what’s happening in heaven, it’s the only wise and sensible thing to do.
 
Now let’s turn to our Bit, which seems rather appropriate to all that’s gone before. ‘I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.’
 
Oh Friends, that’s certainly a powerful statement and promise for the psalmist to make! Now why did he feel obliged to make it eh? The psalm itself is superscripted ‘Praise for deliverance from death,’ and just before our Bit, the psalmist explains the reason for that most worthwhile promise:
 
‘The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped (saved) me. Return unto thy rest, O my soul: for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.’ (Ps.116:6-8)
 
Ah my brethren, that definitely sounds like a rather good reason for making a promise to walk before the Lord in the land of the living!
 
Now many of us have been saved from similar life threatening circumstances, but have we afterward ever made such a bold promise to God for showing us His infinite mercy and compassion? Not as many as should!
 
And for those few who have, are we keeping that promise? I surely hope so, since our God doesn’t take kindly to broken promises. Better not to promise, than promise and not pay. (Eccl.5:5)
 
And in the verse after our Bit, the psalmist makes another provocative statement: ‘I believed, therefore have I spoken:’ (Ps.116:10a)
 
Now though that sounds simple, it’s such a powerful and compelling scripture that Bruh Paul uses it in his second letter to the Corinthians, re living by faith. ‘We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;’ (2 Cor.4:13)
 
Oh my people, I ask us now, do we believe? And if so, have we spoken? I surely hope so, because it’s a very important part, in fact a necessity in our Christian heritage to speak what we believe, otherwise our beliefs are selfish and consequently useless to others.
 
It just shows that we don’t think highly enough of our faith to talk about what we believe, and that’s simply making a mockery of Jesus and His sacrificial death.
 
Please note Bruh David’s similar statement to our Bit in Psalm 27, ‘The Lord is my light and my salvation.’ He declares with certain confidence and trust: ‘I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.’ (Ps.27:13)
 
Oh my people, we too are in the land of the living, and likewise claim to believe in the same God, therefore we should also exercise and claim that same confidence and trust in the goodness and magnanimity of our God, otherwise we’re just fakes and hypocrites, which we obviously don’t want to be.
 
So just as we begun today with affirmations in the Lord, let’s end the same way nuh.
 
Listen to the psalmist: ‘What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people….
 
I will offer thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. In the courts of the Lord’s house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. (Hallelujah) Praise ye the Lord.’ (Ps.116:12-14, 17-19)
 
Oh Friends, that’s the proper response and reaction to faith, trust and thanksgiving to Almighty God!
 
Let’s go forth today and act in like manner nuh, since we all have put our faith and trust in Him, and we surely have a lot to be thankful for. Much LOVE!
 
…true believers ought to have a heart burning with LOVE…just like Jesus…and a life shining brightly…reflecting His awesome light…
 
 

 

 

Today’s Scrip-Bit 19 June 2012 Psalm 116:17

Psalm 116:7.    I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.
 
Oh Friends, it’s one more morning, one more day that we’re alive and kicking on this beautiful planet earth, so LOVINGLY created by our heavenly Father for our enjoyment! Wow! It’s something we should all be very thankful and grateful for everyday, even though our personal lives might be a tad on the rough side these days. And that’s exactly where our Bit today comes in: ‘I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.’ It’s when times are hard, or some unforeseen, sudden dilemma crops up that we need to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving. When things and times are good and oodles of blessings are being bestowed upon us, we ought also to offer thanks, but under those circumstances, it’s not a sacrifice. A good example of what I’m talking about is the other morning when I felt that sudden, unexpected, excruciating pain in my left knee, as I got out of my car in the church’s parking lot. Now I could have gotten angry and blamed and berated somebody, including the Lord, especially after I asked for an explanation and received none. But instead, I wisely thanked Him for whatever was happening because I knew that He was still in control and had my welfare at heart. The Lord knew that I wasn’t thrilled by the situation, but I got a passing mark because I kept my cool, grinned and bore my pain in reasonable silence. Oh Friends, whenever problems befall us, we’re too quick to blame and complain and get angry, when as believers, we ought to try and take it in our stride and go first to the Lord in prayer, asking for answers and direction. That is where the sacrifice part comes in; when we’re hurting and confused, but wisely lay it all before our wonderful, helpful and LOVING God. That will bring peace to our souls and help us to handle the situation appropriately. Listen to the psalmist Asaph, as he wisely declares in Psalm 50, God is the judge. ‘Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the Most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.’ (Ps.50:14-15) That is exactly what we constantly need to do in these very troubled times my people, instead of complaining and whining and finding fault with everybody except ourselves, where the problems most often lie. We have become such an ungrateful society that I’m sure the Lord shakes His head in wonder and disgust everyday when He hears us angrily clamouring over petty stuff we lack, and not being thankful for all the glorious stuff we do have. Appreciation Friends, vocal appreciation of our God’s goodness is of the utmost importance in a believer’s life! What’s the saying: ‘Complain and Remain, Praise and be Raised.’ That’s gospel truth my brethren! A negative, critical fault-finding spirit disconnects us from God. If in anger and negativity we keep dialling heaven, we’ll always get a busy signal, or no signal at all. Only when we come to Him in a humble, contrite manner do the lines to heaven open up. Hear Hosea’s prescription for entreating the Lord: ‘O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God, for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves (fruits, sacrifices) of our lips.’ (Hos.14:1-2) And the scholars explain that thus: ‘Calves of our lips: The word calves (Heb, par, ‘a young bull or produce’) is best understood metaphorically, referring to the words that the lips produce – in this context praise to the Lord. The nation had used its lips to praise the idolatrous calves; now it will use its lips in praise to the Lord God.’ Meanwhile, Bruh Paul, re the ways of the believer, tells the Ephesians, and us, that our ways should be channelled towards: ‘Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.’ (Eph.5:20-21) As I keep reminding us Friends, living a true Christian life is not easy, but if we are serious about it, in partnership with Jesus, we can do a worthwhile, and even an excellent job. But we have to let thanks, praise and glory to our God be THE central aspect of our lives. Without that all-important ingredient directing us, we’ll most likely sink like a heavy stone, or keep treading water, going nowhere, until we get tired and succumb to the irresistible pull of the depths. Only with praise and thanks in our souls and coming from our lips will we swim to safety. And we’ll end with an appropriate scripture from Hebrews, re service well-pleasing to God. ‘By him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks (confessing to) his name. But to do good and to communicate (share) forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.’ (Heb.13: 15-16) That’s the awesome truth mih people! So please, starting today, right now, let’s turn our lives around nuh. Too many of us supposed believers are negative and complaining, and are therefore disconnected from the Lord, that’s why we can’t get ahead. Let’s begin being more positive, joyful and uttering more thanks and praise, both during the good and bad times, because above all else, God wants us to praise and glorify Him. If that doesn’t impact a great portion of our waking moments, then we’re not obeying His Word. Much LOVE!…to him that hath ears…let him hear…then having heard…let him give much thanks and praise…as is his bounden duty…
