Oh Friends, our God is a great God yes, but sometimes He can be a bit harsh. Imagine this scene nuh: The duchess and the ole fella in sunny Tobago, cavorting with Friends and family. We hanging out with mih favourite uncle, Uncle Foster, up by the old house where I use to live, at the corner of Main and Bacolet Streets. The ole fella even expatiating to a poor mentally challenged lady about the poor mental health benefits even in the rich countries. Meanwhile she is sitting by the window where my grandfather sat every evening, watching the fowls go to sleep in the soursop tree, before he went to bed too. I’m even in Miss Armstrong’s parlour across the road, looking to buy goodies from Cowie’s bakery down Carnbee. Then all of a sudden reality hits! I wake up in cold, wet, miserable Canada, where all night, a wicked wind has been forcing the naked, unprotected, defenceless trees to dance to its merciless up-tempo tango. Hn! I can tell you it sure was a major let down. And the strange thing is that usually I hardly remember any of the details of my dreams when I awaken, but this one in Tobago was burned, etched in stone in my mind. Now Friends, I can either look at that dream as a tease or a promise. But as far as I’m concerned it IS A PROMISE! Thank you Lord! And having received the promise of a promise (smile) and having stored it safely in my heart, let’s turn to our Bit. ‘For I have not spoken of myself (my own authority), but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.’ It’s the same as yesterday, so I can share those scriptures I promised, cause I want to be as faithful as our God, when I promise something. (Heb.10:23) And to introduce it all, listen to the thrilling testimony of John the Baptist. ‘He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth (bears witness to); and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal (certified) that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father LOVETH the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.’ (John 3:31-35) There John the Baptist sets the stage for Jesus’ coming. And when Jesus came and healed a man at a pool in Bethesda on the Sabbath, the hypocrite Jews set out to persecute Him. But Jesus in His calm manner informed them: ‘My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.’ (John 5:17) Well that only got the religious zealots even more fired up, for Jesus had not only committed a cardinal sin of working on the Sabbath, but was now also blaspheming by claiming He was the Son of God. Mama Mia! That certainly wouldn’t do! But I can just imagine Jesus standing there, looking the hypocrites straight in the eye and answering: ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father LOVETH the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.’ (John 5:19-20) Then later in that same speech, Jesus further declares: ‘I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just (righteous); because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true (valid as testimony).’ (John 5:30-31) Yes Friends, though Jesus was God incarnate, He didn’t give Himself any unnecessary airs and graces, but constantly deflected all glory to the Father. Now later on, in talking about Abraham’s descendants, He tells the Pharisees: ‘I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.’ (John 8:37-38) Meaning, we usually do the things our fathers do, but unfortunately they didn’t have the right Father like Him. Then, when Jesus teaches the disciples about the way to the Father and Philip asks Him to show them the Father, (John 14:8) Jesus gently rebukes him. ‘Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words I speak unto you I speak not of myself (of mine own authority): but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works sake.’ (John 14:9-11) Ah mih brethren, it’s amazing that despite all the awesome works that Jesus did, the religious leaders still doubted His authority. It reminds me of the man, blind from birth, that He healed and the Pharisees kept harassing the man about it. Finally he got fed up and simply told them he didn’t know anything about Jesus, just that He healed him, and if they didn’t like that too bad. But as far as he was concerned, He was a man of God, otherwise He couldn’t have healed him. Matter fixed! (John 9;30-33) And our last scripture comes from when Jesus promises the Holy Ghost to the disciples. Judas, (not Iscariot) asked how He would show it to them and not the rest of the world? (John 14:22) Jesus replied: ‘If a man LOVE me, he will keep my words: and my Father will LOVE him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode (home) with him. He that LOVETH me not keepeth not my sayings (words): and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.’ (John 14:23-24) So Friends, having heard the word of the Father, through the Son, let’s go out now and put it into action nuh. It’s our bounden duty as believers. Much LOVE!…if you LOVE Jesus…then you automatically LOVE the Father…and He automatically LOVES you back…what a glorious arrangement…

2 Corinthians 1:2. Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Aye Friends, whoever says that our God isn’t something else, doh really know Him nuh. Listen to this story: A couple days ago He worked a magic on me, a nice magic obviously, and now would you believe that He wants me to testify to it. Hn, hn! But you know, since I try to be obedient as much as possible, I am going to testify, though not simply out of obedience, but more so out of LOVE and gratitude for God’s awesome goodness, and as usual, He was just in time. Anyway, the story goes like this. That day I guess I was feeling somewhat tired and low down, plus the weather was sort of wet and damp, and to make matters worse, my old bones were acting up with the arthritis, so I was having a bit of a pity party, day dreaming about the wonderful weather in Tobago. And right at that momentous moment in time (smile) the duchess called me from downstairs to pick up the phone. And lo and behold, it was one of my sisters in Jamdown (Jamaica) calling to wish me a Happy New Year and also to tell me that my niece and nephew from Tobago had just had dinner with them. And I don’t have to tell you all what that caused – my joy was most thoroughly renewed! And who says that our God isn’t a real great God eh? Foolishness! Much thanks Sister Audrey! I’m sure she didn’t even know that she was then being used by the Most High to revitalize me. And some of you must be wondering how come I have sisters in J.A. But they must be my sisters since some forty years ago, when I was living there, their parents took me in when I had no place to go, and the family showered me with plenty, plenty LOVE, a true action of Jesus. Thanks so much Aunt Amy and Uncle Aubrey. I won’t even venture to think what would have become of me, if the LOVE of Jesus hadn’t penetrated your hearts and caused you to take me in. And as I keep saying Friends, we miss the best part of our God when we don’t see His wonderful actions in our daily lives. Ah sorry for you people who don’t look for Him in the everyday situations, and thus cannot appreciate what He does in the ordinary, day to day moments, but the Lord has done so much ordinary magic in my life that He’s made me a sure believer. Unfortunately, most of us keep looking for big miracles, which are obviously few and far between, when we should be looking for the small ones, which happen almost everyday. However, from today, RIGHT NOW, I want us all to look for and thus enjoy those smaller moments of magic, cause that’s when we truly come to know, appreciate and LOVE Him. I also want us to be serious about our New Year’s resolution to increase the level and intensity of our LOVE Walk with Jesus. That means being more committed in thought, word and action to the LOVE REVOLUTION we’re trying to foment. Oh Friends, I guarantee that if you all really tried to get closer to Jesus, you’d be amazed at the good changes that will start taking place in your lives. Then you’d start to believe more. In other words, you’d be growing in faith. And that’s the name of the game my people: believe… experience… more belief… more experience, at an even higher level… faith grows even stronger… with righteousness not bad at all… and you just keep growing until He’s ready to call you home. In fact, once you come to really know Jesus, you never stop growing because there’s such an awesome amount of stuff to learn about and from Him. And that Friends, is my testimony for this Tuesday morning, early in January, in this new year of 2013 with its promised watershed, unexpected, and most interesting happenings. Ah mih people, if we can’t find joy in the Lord, then something’s wrong. But here’s our Bit: ‘Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.’ And like Bruh Paul, I’d like to wish us all that this morning. That greeting came to be his signature at the beginning of almost all of his writings, beginning with that to the Romans. ‘To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.’ (Rom.1:7) The scholars explain that thus: ‘Called to be saints. This tells how they got to be saints, namely by way of God’s call (cf. 8:30). Grace is the typical Greek greeting, whereas peace is a traditional Hebrew greeting. Note Paul’s greeting in his other epistles, for this characteristic expression of Paul.’ And re our Bit, here is the scholar’s note. ‘Grace to you and peace: for Paul, grace always precedes peace. Peace is subsequent and comes because God’s grace has been received by faith. Nothing brings this peace as much as the undiluted gospel of God’s grace (cf. Eph.2:14; Phil.4:7; Col.1:20; 3:15). From: The single preposition ‘apo’ links the Father and the Son in an indissoluble union, thus pointing to the deity of Christ.’ And all God’s children declared a loud and grateful, ‘Praise the Lord!’ Now Friends, we’ll close with the words to the chorus of another li’l reggae ditty I recently heard that are most appropriate to our Bit today. It’s called ‘Beauty for Ashes, and is sung by Germaine Cowan. Please sing the chorus with me: ‘Beauty for ashes, In a shower of grace. Hope for tomorrow; It’s a bright and brand new day. He took away my sorrow. Put a smile on my face. Beauty for ashes, In a shower of grace.’ Isn’t that just plain beautiful and filled with so much gospel truth my brethren! Let’s ponder on those things today nuh, let’s consider the many instances where our wonderful God has taken our ashes and given us beauty in return. Let’s start looking for His glorious presence in our everyday lives, because that’s where He wants to be and is mostly to be found. Much LOVE!…And of his fullness…have all we received…and grace for grace…(graced heaped on grace)… (John 1:16)

Matthew 5:6. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Oh Friends, our God is indeed a great God, but more importantly He’s also a kind and merciful Deity. Point in question; just now when I came to write the Bit I wasn’t feeling up to scratch, seems as though the flu wants to take hold of me, but with God’s help and some man made stuff, I’m fighting it. I therefore was having a hard time finding something I could get my head around, and after some futile search, frustration set in and I cried out to the Lord, asking why in my weakest moment He was letting me struggle to find a Bit? And would you know a couple minutes later, I was guided to our Bit. Praise the Lord! Ah Friends, I’ve learned, both from the testimony of others and from my own personal experience, that when you try your best to walk with the Lord, He will bless you. How else could I be writing these Bits everyday for over five years now eh? And it hasn’t always been easy, but He’s always seen me through. And here’s today’s Bit: ‘Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.’ It comes from Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount and addresses one of the many spiritual characteristics He expects to find in His followers. In fact, that’s what the Beatitudes are about; characteristics of Jesus that He wants us to reflect in our earthly journey, just like He did in His. Now what does it all mean? Let’s invoke some scholarly help here: ‘These future possessors of the earth are its presently installed rightful heirs, and even now they hunger and thirst after righteousness. They experience a deep desire for personal righteousness, which in itself is a proof of their spiritual rebirth. Those who are poor and empty in their own spiritual poverty recognize the depth of their need, and they hunger and thirst for that which only God can give them. They shall be filled refers to a complete satisfaction.’ To end their discourse, the scholars quote a piece of Psalm 107:9, God’s wonderful works to the children of men, but I’ll quote it in the full context. ‘Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness (LOVING-kindness), and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.’ (Ps.107:8-9) And that’s no lie Friends! Anytime we hunger and thirst for God, have no fear, He will fill us with whatever we need! As Mary said in the Magnificat, her wonderful song of praise: ‘He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent away empty.’ (Luke 1:53) Isaiah, in telling Israel that the rebellious will surely be punished, also commented: ‘Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed. Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl (wail) for vexation of spirit (grief of spirit).’ (Is.65:13-14) And here’s the crowning glory people, also from Isaiah. ‘Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness (abundance). Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.’ (Is.55:1-3) The scholars also explain this nicely: ‘God’s free gift of salvation is offered to all who will receive it. Those who are spiritually hungry and thirsty may come to eat and drink without money (or freely). He promises an everlasting covenant to the Gentiles like the one He established with Israel. His invitation to all men is clearly stated by the appeal, Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, and call ye upon him while he is near.’ (Is.55:6) Oh my people, please don’t lose faith in our God! We won’t always agree with His doings, but neither does He often agree with ours, just remember who is the Master, and who is the servant. He is omnipotent, while we are mere grunts in comparison. His ways and understanding are also higher than ours, thus we must bow to His decrees. That doesn’t mean we can’t come to Him in confidence, with a true and trusting heart. And when we do, He will hear our plea and comfort us. Again, it might not be how or what we want, but it will always be in our best interest, for as He’s so faithfully promised: ‘that all things work together for good to those that LOVE God, to them who are called according to his purpose.’ (Rom.8:28) And that’s the gospel truth my brethren! It’s a very crucial scripture, and one that you must sincerely believe and act upon, if you want to be a successful believer, since a lot of unfortunate stuff happens to us, and only when we believe that everything will work out right in the end, can we handle our misfortune and disappointment. So please hang in there Friends, sincerely seek the Lord for whatever you lack, and He will fill you with whatever you need. He is faithful that promised! Much LOVE!…a successful believer…must first believe…then clothe that belief with the utmost faith and trust in Almighty God…
