The Overwhelming Importance for Christians to Step Up and Spread their Salt and Shine Their Lights In these Very Dark Times!

Matthew 5:16.         Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Once more round the block friends on this cold Monday, the first day of this new work week, the second week in Advent, where we prepare to celebrate Christ’s coming at Christmas. And there’s already a flurry of activity with lights, Christmas trees, gifts, food preparations, and Christmas parties, but please let’s not forget that the reason for Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, and ensure that we keep it uppermost in our minds and activities as we journey on to the big day. 

Oh, I know it’s very easy to get caught up in all the hustle and bustle of the season, especially if we follow those who don’t consider Christ as Lord and Saviour and His birth inconsequential and talk about Happy Holidays etc. I wonder how those Happy Holidays and whatever else came about eh? Let’s remember that all the festivities, the merriment and all the other hoopla, comes about because of Christ’s birth and nothing else! So, whatever we do this Christmas season, let’s allow Christ to percolate in our souls and spirits, the way He ought to. 

That brings us to some of Christ’s very meaningful and important words from the Sermon on the Mount, concerning our witness in His name, and now might just be a good time to reawaken our discipleship with so much talk of and references to Christ being in the air. We are referring to His words regarding our energizing the world. ‘Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour (flavour), wherewith (by what) shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and be trodden under foot of men.’ (Matt. 5:13) 

And sadly, it seems like many of us supposed believers have lost our salt, for the world is not flavoured with talk of and reverence for Christ, but for Satan. Evildoing is running rampant in the world instead of righteousness. And who is to blame for that? In great part we supposed believers who, for whatever reason(s) are not doing our job to the best of our ability. We have simply allowed Satan and his evil cronies to simply overtake the world without as great an effort as we should have put forth. 

And as the scholars remind us, per Ye are the salt of the earth: Again, the phrase “ye are” indicates that only the genuinely born-again person is salt and can help meet the needs of the world. Salt adds flavouring, acts as a preservative, melts coldness, and heals wounds. Thus, it is a very appropriate description of the believer in his relationship to the world in which he lives.’ And that’s particularly true in today’s world as regards melting coldness and healing wounds, for so many of us today are cold and unforgiving, and have serious wounds, especially spiritual and emotional wounds that desperately need healing. 

Now, Jesus doesn’t leave our responsibility as mere salt of the world, but continues: ‘Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle (lamp), and put it under a bushel (basket), but on a candlestick (lampstand); and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’ (Matt. 5:13-16) 

And the scholars offer this explanation on that passage. ‘Ye are the light of the world describes the essential mission of the Christian to the world. He is the condition (salt) to meet the world’s needs, and he has a mission (light) to the world. His light is to clearly shine forth into the darkness of human depravity. He is to set his light upon a candlestick, not hide it under a bushel, that is a basket. Darkness is the absence of light; and darkness alone cannot dispel the light, but the smallest light can dispel the greatest darkness.’ 

And that’s why it’s such a crying shame that our world is filled with so much darkness when there are so many supposed light carrying believers in it. Remember, as the scholars say, even the smallest light can dispel the greatest darkness! So why then is our world dark and evil minded? It’s obvious that we’re not shining enough of our supposed light on it. Our lights have possibly gone out, like our salt has lost its flavour. If so, then our world is in for a very rough and evil time, which we are currently seeing taking place before our very eyes. 

Our world has always had a lot of evil in it, but I doubt it’s ever been this evil or depraved, especially with all the new-fangled stuff we now have that can push the envelope further than ever. It’s therefore very urgent my fellow believers that we wake up immediately and begin turning things around, getting the flavour back into our salt and relighting our lamps so that they can shine brighter than ever in this diabolical world. And since we are encouraged to come to the throne of grace for help in times of need, let’s do that right now nuh, through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn, so that we can get divine aid to turn things around. 

Altogether: ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise Your Holy Name and thank You this Monday morning for life and strong faith in Christ, despite the mass confusion in our world. Heavenly Father, You are the ONLY ONE with the power to solve our many problems. 

Yes, we have all sinned and seriously disobeyed Your Word, but You are a merciful, forgiving and gracious God, who has faithfully promised to hear and answer our prayers when we humble ourselves, pray, and sincerely seek Your face. So, we come to You now, with sincere repentance in our hearts, pleading for wise guidance and direction to alleviate our problems. 

Oh Father, please ease the pain of the many suffering from negative situations, show them Your awesome grace and mercy. And faithfully keep Your promise to prosper us if we turn from our evil ways. Show this evil world that You are indeed Jehovah Rapha; the God who heals! We pray this in the holy and blessed name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen! And again, we say: Amen!’  

But remember friends, the basic requirements for divine aid, is humbling ourselves, praying and sincerely seeking God’s face. So, if we truly desire divine aid, let’s get together and meet those basic requirements nuh. For it’s all for our benefit! Much LOVE!

Psalm 119:105.       Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Oh my Scrip-Bit friends and families, I’m truly sorry that the Bit is so late, but as I do on most Wednesdays, I went out to my prayer group this morning, then had to run some errands afterwards. And believe me, running errands in this wet, drizzly, dark weather is no fun, especially for elderly people like me. (smile). And it’s not the cold that gets to you so much as the dampness in this kind of weather. It just seems to seep into your bones. However, with the awesome help of Jesus, I was victorious in running my errands. Praise His holy name! But by the time I got home I was tired and had to have a li’l nap, to recover my energy. 

And do I have an interesting story. Earlier on, as I was exiting the grocery, a lady behind me greeted someone else with ‘Happy Holidays.’ I immediately turned around, and saw that her style of dressing showed that she was of another faith, but I still said; ‘It’s not Happy Holidays, but Merry Christmas.’  She replied that she didn’t celebrate Christmas, and that it was the holidays. And I said yes, but what was the reason for the holidays. Obviously she evaded the question, and by then we were outside in the drizzle and she said. ‘Have a pleasant day sir.’ And I replied, ‘You too my dear.’ 

Yuh see, people nowadays are something else. Because she didn’t celebrate Christmas, she could not acknowledge the reason for the holidays she enjoyed. But when their faith has a high holy day, they expect everyone to acknowledge it. Ah Lord eh! No wonder why our world is so confused and chaotic. And by the way, don’t say that I don’t practice what I preach, (smile) as I keep telling us to make sure that everyone knows that the reason for this supposed holiday season is the birth of Jesus Christ! 

Now, as I was looking through the Good Library for something to talk about, I happened to browse through the Psalms, Psalm 119 in particular and was led to contemplate this section titled NUN. And though the opening verse is well known to us, the rest of it might not be. So let’s read and inwardly digest it. ‘Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I have sworn, and I will perform (confirm it), that I will keep thy righteous judgements. I am afflicted very much: quicken (revive) me, O Lord, according unto thy word. 

Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, Lord, and teach me thy judgements. My soul (life) is continually in my hand (in danger): yet do I not forget thy law. The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred (strayed) not from thy precepts. Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage (an inheritance) for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes always, even unto the end.’ (Ps. 119:105-112) 

Yes my fellow believers, those are words many of us should take to heart, because they are just as applicable today as they were back when the psalmist wrote them. For instance the first verse; the Lord’s word, His revelation in any form, still guides our feet and shows us the path we should tread. And many of us have sworn to keep His righteous judgements, or the decisions God has made as a judge in order to make earthly behaviour conform to His heavenly standard. And we do try to keep them as best we can. 

And don’t talk about affliction! Today, so much of the world is badly afflicted and most of them don’t know what to do with themselves. But we Christians know what to do: that’s turn to Almighty God for His awesome help, His faithfulness in keeping His promises! And in so doing, we offer up sincere thanks and praise, asking for His strength to learn His word. For our lives are in continual danger in this ungodly and evil world, and we do our best not to forget His law; that’s what the Lord has taught us in His Word, what He requires of us. 

Yes, although the enemy have laid traps of all kinds, all over the place for us, yet we still haven’t strayed from His righteousness. We’re continually trying to live the righteous life that He granted us through the sacrifice of His wonderful Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And His testimonies, the content of God’s Word, that He has testified of Himself and His will, have we taken as an everlasting inheritance, because they enrich and cause enjoyment to permeate out hearts, minds, bodies and souls. 

Consequently, we have determined to accept (engrave on our hearts) and thus permanently keep His unchangeable regulations. So you see, the Lord’s Word is still our guide book for successful earthly living, and anyone who says or does otherwise, needs to have many prayers prayed on their behalf. (smile) Now, let’s go home declaring our Wednesday Wail, letting all and sundry know of our wonderful position in Jesus Christ. 

As one strong and sincere voice: ‘Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: I’m so glad to be alive on this Wednesday! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: Thank God the breath of life is still flowing through me on this Wednesday! I am halfway home. My hands are fixed securely on the plough, and I’m not turning back. I’m not looking back at the past, not focusing on what has gone before. But my eyes are fixed straight ahead; straight ahead to a glorious future with Jesus. Glory Hallelujah!’ 

And if we stick with Jesus right to the very end, then it’s been promised that that future will be even more glorious than we can ask or imagine! So hoping to see you there! Much LOVE!

More Dramatic Bible Stories: Part 1 of John the Baptist’s Birth!

Luke 1:14.       And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

Ah friends, this Wednesday morning the weather is a replica of the last two; wet and drizzly, windy and cold, dark and disheartening. And sadly, the ole fella is feeling just like the weather, dark and dreary, with his spirit at a low ebb. And why is that you ask? Because of some negative things in my life that are taking too long to get fixed. And I can’t do much more on my own, so I just have to wait until the Lord decides it’s time to fix them. And they are really small things, but you know those small, niggling things are the worst, since you expect to deal with them easily, but they just frustrate you no end when you can’t. 

Anyway, enough of my complaining. This is the Christmas season, when our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was born, and for that we ought to have a bright, blossoming spirit, rather than a dark and dreary one. (smile) So let’s get to another dramatic story from the Bible, this one about the birth of John the Baptist. 

Now the Good Library tells it thus from the Gospel of Luke. ‘There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course (division) of Abia: and his wife was one of the daughters of Aaron, (the first high priest), and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken (advanced) in years.’ (Luke 1:5-7) 

So we have another older, barren woman being made pregnant by the Lord’s grace and mercy. First there was Sarah, the wife of Abraham, who conceived when she was ninety years old and bore Isaac. (Gen. 21:1-8) Then there was Rebekah, Isaac’s wife, whom Isaac entreated with the Lord on her behalf for she too was barren, and she finally bore the twins, Jacob and Esau. (Gen. 25:19-28)  

And what about Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel, who was so tired of the jests her husband, Elkanah’s other wife, Peninnah, who had lots of children, made about her barrenness. So one day while her family was visiting the temple of Shiloh, Hannah went in there, and on bended knees, cried out her eyes and heart to the Lord for a child, promising that she would give Him to the Lord, if He took pity on her. And the Lord did, allowing her to bear the prophet Samuel, whom she dedicated, as promised to the Lord’s work. (1 Sam. 1-2) 

And before we get back to John the Baptist’s story, it’s important to note that back in those olden times, a woman who could not bear children was looked upon with heightened reproach and severely scorned. That’s why there are so many references to barrenness in the Old Testament. And having got that out of the way, (smile) let’s continue with intriguing story about the birth of John the Baptist. 

After telling us about the couple’s lack of children, Luke continues: ‘And it came to pass, that while he (Zacharias) executed the priest’s office (served as priest) before God in the order of his course (division), According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot (he was chosen by lot) to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without (outside) at the time of the incense.’ (Luke 1:8-10) 

And the scholars offer an important note on the subject of burning incense, saying that it ‘would be a sacred moment in Zacharias’ life, for no priest could offer incense more than once in his lifetime. Many never had the chance at all, there being an estimated 18,000  priests at this point in Jewish history.’ 

The story then goes on to say: ‘And there appeared unto him (Zacharias) an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.’ (Luke 1:11-12) Note the difference in reactions to Gabriel’s entrance between Mary and Zacharias. Mary was simply confused by the greeting, (Luke 1:29) while fear filled Zacharias’ spirit. 

‘But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. and he shall go before him in the spirit and the power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.’ (Luke 1:13-16) 

Ah friends, that was certainly a lot for an old man to handle all at once. So he asked the inevitable question: ‘And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken (advanced) in years. And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings (this good news). And behold thou shalt be dumb (mute), and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season (own time).’ (Luke 1:18-20) 

Now that punishment might seem rather harsh on the old man, but he had all the years of priestly experience and supposedly knowing God in a deeper way than most, and was expected to believe without any hesitation. And when it’s compared to Mary’s reaction, her immediate belief, old Zacharias could possibly have done better. Anyway, we’ll stop there for today, and go home declaring our Wednesday Wail, letting all and sundry know of our wonderful position in Christ Jesus. 

As one strong and sincere voice: ‘Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: I’m so glad to be alive on this Wednesday! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: Thank God the breath of life is still flowing through me on this Wednesday! I am halfway home. My hands are fixed securely on the plough, and I’m not turning back. I’m not looking back at the past, not focusing on what has gone before. But my eyes are fixed straight ahead; straight ahead to a glorious future with Jesus. Glory Hallelujah!’ 

And if we continue with Jesus right down to the very end, then it’s been promised that that future will be even more glorious than we can ever ask or imagine! So see you there! Much LOVE!

…when the Lord speaks to us…it is best to simply say…I believe Lord…than to ask any questions…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 8 December 2016 2 Timothy 4:7.

 2 Timothy 4:7.   I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course (race), I have kept the faith.

And then it was Thursday…Wow! Only 16 more shopping day to Christmas! 

Steups! Notice the language, the commercialism? That is how we count down the days to Christmas – in shopping days, not in days till the birth of Jesus Christ – the real reason for the season. 

Ah Lord eh! After all the rigmarole of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we are still talking in terms of shopping! How much shopping can we do eh, especially when so many people are not working? 

But that seems to be the overwhelming feature of our lives in these modern times. It’s all about gifts and presents and food and what not, all the material things! 

There is precious little talk, if any at all, of Jesus being born, of Him being the real gift of Christmas, the most wonderful present ever from our heavenly Father. And then when things get rotten, or go sour, we wonder why. No wonder our world is in such a sorry mess. 

Anyway friends, please, let’s not be found carrying that baggage of the secular and commercial world; let’s concentrate on the first coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, when the angels rocked heaven and earth with their great pronouncement; ‘For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.’ (Luke 2:11) 

Now that’s what we should be getting all excited and enthusiastic about! Not the rushing and pushing and confusion of unnecessary shopping. 

So, having said all that, which might not make any difference to anybody, (smile) let’s turn to our Bit, the immortal words of Bruh Paul to Timothy. ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course (race), I have kept the faith.’ 

Now that again is something that should be resonating in our minds, souls and bodies, rather than the shopping days till Christmas. What’s going to happen, how are we going to feel when the days of lives are coming to an end eh? 

Will we be satisfied with what we’ve done down here? Will we be able to utter words similar to Bruh Paul’s? It’s ever so important that we can my brethren. Otherwise we would have wasted our earthly sojourn on things of the world, and stand the chance of losing the righteous crown that’s been set aside for us in heaven. 

We stand the chance of losing Jesus’ greeting at the pearly gates of: ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of the Lord.’ (Matt.25:21) 

No Friends, we don’t want to be missing that wonderful greeting at all! So please, let’s smarten up and get with the right programme nuh; that of Jesus and not Beelzebub! 

Now Bruh Paul thought that running a strong race was so important that he also spoke of it to the Corinthians. Listen up: ‘Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.’ (1 Cor.9:23) 

And the scholars offer this explanation: ‘9:24. Paul draws on a scene familiar to his Corinthian readers in order to drive home his point. The Isthmian Games were an athletic event known to all his readers. 

They were held on alternate summers in the vicinity of Corinth. It was an event not to be missed by anyone of importance in all parts of Greece. As a national institution, it was familiar to his readers as modern football to most Americans.’  

So that shows the Corinthians knew what Bruh Paul was talking about. But he doesn’t stop there, He continues forcefully: ‘And every man that striveth for mastery (competes for the prize), is temperate in all things (has self-control). 

Now they do it to obtain a corruptible (perishable) crown: but we an incorruptible (imperishable). I therefore so run, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under (discipline) my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway (disqualified).’ (1 Cor.9:25-27) 

Yes my faithful believers, to run a good race and fight a good fight for Christ, we must have plenty self-control and self-discipline, for that’s the only way we can reject the amorous advances of the world. 

And even worse, what a shame and disgrace it would be, after we have preached to others about running the race and fighting the good fight, that we ourselves would be disqualified! Now I definitely would not like that, so I try, with God’s help obviously, to practice what I preach. (smile)

Anyhow, here’s the best part of today’s Bit nuh; we going home with the anointing of our Thursday Blessings. But remember, a blessing is not a blessing until it’s been spoken over someone. So in full voice and strong faith, let’s bless ourselves my people. 

‘I declare that I am blessed with God’s supernatural wisdom and receive clear direction for my life! I declare today that I am blessed with creativity, courage, talent and abundance! I am blessed with a strong will, self-control and self-discipline! 

I am blessed with a great family, good friends, good health, faith, favour and fulfillment! I am blessed with success, supernatural strength, promotion and divine protection! I am blessed with a compassionate heart and a positive outlook on life! 

I declare that any curse or negative word that’s ever been spoken over me is broken right now in the name of Jesus! I declare that everything I put my hands to will prosper and succeed! I declare it today and everyday! Amen!’ 

Now my faithful believers in Christ, let’s go out strong and secure in those blessings and not be selfish, but remember to bless others too. Much LOVE!

…oh what a joy it will be…to win that crown of righteousness…
