Luke 2:30.        For mine eyes have seen thy salvation.

The Christmas season is ramping up friends. Only another two weeks and we’ll be celebrating the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ which actually occurred in a manger, an animal barn some two thousand years ago. But that occasion was so marvellous and so important to mankind that we’ve been celebrating it every year since then. And so it should be, because the birth of Jesus Christ was the promise of the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, the Redeemer of man fulfilled. 

And though the ungodly world has made the Advent season more a time of gift giving and purchasing, of eating and drinking, of simply making merry, we faithful believers must continue to remember and advocate the real reason for this spectacular celebration; the incarnate birth of Jesus Christ. So, as we gather in the Lord’s sanctuary on this His day, let us remember that wonderful occasion through our song of worship, one titled ‘O Come All Ye Faithful.’  

Yes friends, ‘This popular Christmas Hymn harkens to the biblical story of the birth of Christ. It is considered a reference to the shepherds, after hearing the angels singing, coming to Bethlehem to adore their new-born Saviour. Today this hymn signifies and celebrates our coming together in worship to adore the LOVING blessing of Jesus, as He sacrificed Himself for our salvation.’ So, let’s offer up our voices in sacrificial praise, in sweet harmony, in a mid-tempo, sincere and passionate version of the song. 

Singing: ‘O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels! (Chorus: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.) God of God, light of light, Lo, he abhors not the Virgin’s womb; True God, begotten, not created: (Chorus) O Sing, choirs of angels; sing in exultation O sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above. Give to our Father, Glory in the highest! (Chorus) Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning; Jesus, to Thee be the glory giv’n; Word of the Father, Now in the flesh appearing, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.’

Oh my faithful brethren, adoring our beautiful and ever-LOVING Lord and Saviour is exactly what we need to do! His name ought to be exalted from the highest hills for the all the wonderful things His humble birth made possible. And the words of the song do convey Christ’s majesty despite His being born in a stable. ‘God of God, light of light, Lo he abhors not the virgin’s womb. True God, begotten not created.’ 

Yes, that’s all true. Christ was begotten like a man, not created, with the sperm of God planted in the virgin’s womb by the Holy Spirit, growing and manifesting just like men. And he would live a life like ordinary men. The only difference is that He was the Son of God, without sin, that’s why He could pay our sin debt on the cross of Calvary later on in life. 

But He was indeed the true Light as John says in his gospel. ‘That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.’ (John 1:9) John the Baptist was not the true light, but was sent to proclaim the coming of the ‘true Light,’ Jesus Christ. 

And the scholars tell us that verse means that God’s revelation is universally available, but it does not signify universal salvation, because to receive salvation one has to believe in Him, as verse 12 tells us. ‘But as many as received him, to them gave he the power (the right) to become sons (children) of God, even to them that believe on his name. (John 1:12) 

Then the song talks about ‘Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing…’ More awesome truth my people. And John again informs of these most salient facts. ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God…And the Word was made (became) flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.’ (John 1:1-2, 14) 

Yuh see friends, Jesus was in fact a part of the Holy Trinity, a part of the Word that created the world, then He became incarnate, a man, born of a woman, but sinless. And later on, we did behold His glory through His death and resurrection. And you’ll notice how the old priest Simeon and the old prophetess Anna gave praise and thanks when Jesus was brought to the temple on the eight day as was the custom. 

The Bible tells us: ‘Then took he him up (Simeon took up Jesus) in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all the people; A light to lighten (bring revelation to) the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.’ (Luke 2:28-32) Simeon had been promised that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah, (vs. 26) that’s why he was willing to go home after seeing Christ. 

Oh friends, the song is indeed a call for all Christ’s people to come and rejoice at this time of His birth. And though it’s an adaptation of a Latin hymn ‘Adeste Fidelis,’ its English translation has been sung down through the years and made popular by many well-known artists. And we’ll end with this commentary. Don’t remember where I got it from, but I like it. (smile) 

It says: ‘The encouragement to “come, all ye faithful, . . . to Bethlehem” situates the singer both among the shepherds who rushed to see Christ and in the great continuation of the “faithful” that have traveled to Bethlehem in a spiritual nature for over 2,000 years. Although today, we cannot actually witness Jesus in the manger, we can come to Bethlehem in a symbolic sense. We can be there in our imaginations as we allow the Christmas story to hearten our spirits.’ 

Truly, there’s no better way to get us into the Christmas spirit, than rejoicing in the Word and singing songs of gladness for Christ’s birth! Please, let’s do just that today! Much LOVE!

John 14:6.     ​I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Aye friends, a fine, upstanding and blessed morning to you all! Yuh know, yesterday I made a significant discovery, yeah, a mind boggling one – life is like the weather. Wow! And I guess you’re wondering how I came to such a significant conclusion eh? Well here’s the genesis and revelation of it all. (smile) Remember yesterday I moaned that it was a wet and dreary day and hoped the weather would be better by afternoon because I had to go out and run some errands? Well, fortunately, by noon time the place was dry and the sun was shining brightly under clear blue skies! 

That lead me to think that our lives often behave the same way, one minute we’re sad and sorrowful, for whatever reason – sometimes even for no reason at all – and then we’re back to being bright, cheerful and happy again, for whatever reason – ofttimes no reason at all. (smile) But to further complicate the situation, though the day turned bright and sunshiny, a strong wind also came along and kicked up an unholy rumpus, causing stuff to be blowing all over the place and the trees to be just a hopping and jumping in its fearsome wake. (smile) 

To top it all, at one stage, I looked out into my neighbour’s backyard that has a big tree growing there, and right now it’s as luverly as it can be; the leaves are mostly a bright russet -brown with some in-between yellows and golds, and I saw the tree dancing a strenuous jig each time the wind blew. But I also noticed that not one of the leaves blew off, despite the wind’s strength and the time for leaves to fall is here. That’s because the leaves and the tree were strong and withstood the wind, boldly letting it know that they weren’t ready to fall as yet. Their time hadn’t yet come, and until it did, they would refuse to bow to it. 

And I saw just how comparable our lives are to the refusal of that tree to bow to the pressure of the wind. It’s the same way that life itself and the enemy brings stuff against us, that we need to stand strong against, not simply give into because it seems stronger than us. We find ourselves in that kind of situation every single day, because that’s just the way life is, but we can only stand real strong and steadfast against the bully-boy that’s life if we have the strength and peace and LOVE of Jesus flowing through our mortal coils. 

Yes friends, only when we have Jesus in us, and we are in Him, that we are strong enough to repudiate or repel anything and anyone that comes against us. And I did go out to do my errands yesterday afternoon in dry and sunny, but extremely windy weather. So as they say, two out of three wasn’t bad! (smile) And it’s the very same way that life operates; we seldom have it all smooth and calm and sunshiny, but there’s always some wrinkle or thorn or problem trying to upset our applecart. 

However, the Lord made us of stern stuff, able to withstand a lot of life’s ups and downs, and when we have the added protection of Jesus and His Holy Spirit dwelling within us…oh my people, we’re then nigh invincible! That’s what Jesus brings to the table as our Lord and Saviour – the ability to fight off all that comes against us. In other words: with Jesus as the guide and pilot of our lives we can do anything because He strengthens us! Glory Hallelujah! Where else, or from whom else can we get that kinda power eh mih bredrin? 

From nowhere or NO ONE else but Jesus! Because He’s the light of the world, our Redeemer, our Saviour, the ONE who sacrificed His sinless life on that old wooden cross at Calvary so that our sins could be forgiven, so that we could be reconciled to the Father and be considered righteous instead of downright sinful, like we truly are! He took ALL our sins and the punishment necessary to forgive and forget them on His back, because the Father LOVED us so much, and He LOVED the Father so much, that He obeyed Him even unto the death of the cross! 

Now why would you refuse to follow such a magnificent and magnanimous Deity eh? Because we’re too proud and foolish and full of ourselves, and desire the flaky, corruptible, destructible things of the world, rather than the everlasting, incorruptible, indestructible things of heaven. Plus the fact that we need to come to Jesus, and stay with him by faith, and not by sight, which is what too many of us desire. Jesus was the LIGHT of the world! 

John the apostle differentiated him from John the Baptist depicting Him thus: ‘There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He (John) was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (John 1:6-11) 

What a sad tale friends. The Creator of the world came to the world He created, but that world did not know or even acknowledge him, when he made Himself known to it. Chuh! How foolish eh! Nonetheless, as John declares (yeah!) in Jesus’ LOVING-kindness and mercy: ‘But as many as received him, to them gave he power (the right) to become the sons (children) of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.’ (John 1:12-13) 

And Jesus Himself said it out loud and clear to Nicodemus: ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ (John 3:3) And when Nicodemus didn’t understand Jesus explained. ‘Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.’ (John 3:5) So friends, it’s as simple as that: if we want to see the kingdom of God, then we have to be born again of water and the Spirit. In other words, be baptized by water and the blood and believe in Jesus. 

For as He also said: ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.’ (John 14:6) Matter fix! No ifs ands and buts about it. And for those of us who have accepted him as Lord and Saviour, let’s go home now declaring (awright) our Thursday Blessings that have been magnanimously showered down on us so we can do His awesome work. 

All together now: ‘I declare that I am blessed with God’s supernatural wisdom and receive clear direction for my life! I declare today that I am blessed with creativity, courage, talent and abundance! I am blessed with a strong will, self-control and self-discipline! I am blessed with a great family, good friends, good health, faith, favour and fulfillment! I am blessed with success, supernatural strength, promotion and divine protection! 

I am blessed with a compassionate heart and a positive outlook on life! I declare that any curse or negative word that’s ever been spoken over me is broken right now in the name of Jesus! I declare that everything I put my hands to will prosper and succeed! I declare it today and everyday! Amen!’ 

And as Jesus desires, it’s now our bounden duty to go out and generously share those blessings, just like He generously shared them with us. Much LOVE!

…you can’t get to heaven…unless you go through Jesus… 

P.S. And if you don’t believe that life can be contrary like the weather, hear this. Yesterday when I came back from running my errands, the duchess told me that my heart doctor wanted to see me this morning in his office. I had expected a simple phone call like all the other doctors are doing. But he had to be different. Chuh! Now I have to go and get myself together and go down the street. But that’s life! (smile) Much LOVE!

Ephesians 2:8.    For by grace are ye (you have been) saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Aye Friends, in some parts of our world night is swiftly falling, while in others, day is slowly dawning, but be it known that the controlling factor in both circumstances is the hand of Almighty God; He of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!

So while some on the other side of the world are praying, asking for a restful and refreshing night of sleep, we on this side of the pond are giving thanks for being able to see the Son’s glorious light for another wonderful day.

And we’re also asking for strength, guidance and wisdom to do God’s Will as we go about our day, hopefully doing good like our Lord and Saviour Jesus did while He sojourned here on earth. Later on tonight, the situations will be reversed, but in His absolute wisdom, that’s just the way God planned it.

Now this past week on In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley, I heard a male quartet open the proceedings with a beautiful spiritual song that touched my heart mightily. (smile) Some of you who watch Uncle Charles might have also heard it. I don’t remember the verses of the song, but the chorus was so memorable that it stuck in my mind.

Please sing it with me. ‘Saved by grace. I have been saved by grace. My name’s written in the Book of Life. And my sins are washed away. Saved by grace. I have been saved by grace. It’s not what I deserve. But I have been saved by grace.’

One more time people, so that the truth of those statements can sink right down deep into our souls. ‘Saved by grace. I have been saved by grace. My name’s written in the Book of Life. And my sins are washed away. Saved by grace. I have been saved by grace. It’s not what I deserve. But I have been saved by grace.’

Yes Friends, it’s by God’s free gift of grace that we are saved, not by anything else! And yuh know what too? We absolutely don’t deserve it. But nonetheless, we have been saved by God’s grace.

‘And all God’s people declared a loud and grateful: ‘Glory Hallelujah! Give the Lord much thanks and praise for His great LOVE and concern for us!’

Yuh better believe that too yes Friends, for without God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness we’d all be heading for Hades with Lucifer, with no chance for, or of redemption.  Glory be for such a wonderful Deity!

Now let’s check out our Bit and delve a little more into the ramifications of the whole situation. (smile) ‘For by grace are ye (you have been) saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:’ That’s Bruh Paul telling it to the Ephesians plain and clear!

And the scholars offer this explanation re the Grace of God. ‘2:8. The grace of God is the expression of His goodness toward the undeserving. Grace means unmerited favour, and can be expressed by the acrostic “God’s riches At Christ’s Expense.” This grace is the basis of our salvation (1:7; 2:8).

Illustration: In salvation, men who deserve hell obtain heaven. This cannot be explained apart from God’s grace. When Paul (Saul) met the Lord on the Damascus Road, Paul was a persecutor of the church. Yet God made him one of the church’s chief preachers. Application: We need to remember that we are saved, given the Holy Spirit, and allowed to serve God – by His grace. (First Ref. Gen.6:8; Primary Ref. Eph.2:8; cf. Ps.139:1).’

Yes my brethren, the whole shebang has nothing to do with us, but all with God. As Bruh Paul continues after our Bit. ‘Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship (creation), created in Christ Jesus unto (for) good works, which God hath before ordained (prepared) that we should walk in them.’ (Eph.2:9-10)

Now listen to the scholars’ explanation of those two verses. ‘2:9. The reason, in part, that salvation is not achieved by good works is to prevent men from bragging of having earned a place in heaven by themselves.’ ‘2:10. For verifies the assertion of man’s good works having no part in obtaining salvation.

Workmanship refers not our original or physical birth, but our spiritual birth: what we are spiritually in the good sense is due to God, not ourselves. Created in Christ Jesus unto good works means “having been (morally) re-created by Christ Jesus for good works”; that is, Jesus remade our spiritual lives so that we could then do good works.

The apostle’s thinking is this: since the Christian has been given spiritual life for the purpose of doing good works, there could have been no good works by him prior to conversion that would merit salvation. Good works follow – do not precede – salvation.’  

And there we have it my people, some basic facts about that most wonderful attribute of God, called grace! Unfortunately though, not a whole lot of us seem to appreciate it, because we don’t hold God in high esteem. Many of us refuse to even believe that there is a God. I’m sorry for that poor lot, but there’s not a whole lot that we can do except tell them about Christ and live the way He wants us to live. Hopefully our Christ-like example will make a bigger difference than our talking. 

And we’ll end with these moving words of John. ‘He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power (the right) to become the sons (children) of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made (became) flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.’ (John 1:10-14)

Oh Friends, that puts it all into a nutshell, so that we can see it at one glance. Please ponder all that we’ve said to day, so that we can improve our faith, our Bible knowledge and our righteousness as befitting true believers. Much LOVE!
