Today’s Scrip-Bit   8 July 2022 Lamentations 3:40.

Lamentations 3:40.      Let us search and try (examine) our ways, and turn again to the Lord.

Come and get it friends! Friday is finally here, and all over the world we shout: ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday! What a weird sentiment eh? For all the things we can be thanking God for, Friday seems to be one of the most popular ones. Not as many of us thank Him for life, LOVE, health, a job, friends, family, a roof over our heads and food on our table, although a large percentage of our world population are lacking many of those things we take for granted. I guess though, it’s not wrong to thank Him for a respite from labour, but it just seems that we are more thankful for that than the other stuff that’s more important. But what else can we expect from a more sinful than godly world eh?

However, there is good news my people, because I just came across some interesting scripture on the subject from the Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah. He says: Wherefore doth (how can) a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? Let us search and try (examine) our ways, and turn again to the Lord. Let us lift up our hearts with our hands unto God in the heavens. We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.’ (Lam. 3:39-42)

Now, that is some of the best advice I’ve heard in a long while! How can we complain when we are punished for our rebellious and sinful behaviour eh? Since we seem to have no use for God, He’s obviously left us to our own devices. And since we can do nothing right without Him as the mainstay of our lives, our world is therefore trundling very fast down the road to the pits of hell. But there is a brake we can apply to that quick decline to the depths of Hades.

Yes friends, we can stop our mortal decay by examining ourselves, our ways, and then wisely turning back to Almighty God, who is always ready, willing and able to welcome us back to His fold. Like the prodigal son, we’ve exhausted all our wealth, energy, and options, squandered all we had living a foolish and sinful life of reckless abandon, and now we find ourselves wallowing in the slimy pig pen of regrettable sin, with no one giving us anything but heartache and grief. Consequently, the only avenue left open to us is that embraced by the prodigal son. It’s time we reflect his wisdom.

I like how the Good Book puts it: ‘And when he came to himself…’ (Luke 15:17) Oh my people, don’t you think it’s high time we came to ourselves, to our senses and realize that we’re in a losing situation, a disastrous position, one that will only drive us further into the hands of Satan and the chambers of hell. It’s imperative that we say like the prodigal son: ‘I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee. and am no more (longer) worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.’ (Luke 15:18-19)

Wow! What a wakeup call that would be, and what overwhelming joy it would produce in heaven if most of us sincerely turned back to the God of our forefathers and began living a life worthy of Him! It would turn both earth and heaven upside down! (smile) Seriously though my fellow believers, that’s the only way for our world to go these days, if we ever hope to improve the evil and ungodly mess it’s currently in.

Now, that’s what Christ’s church is supposed to be doing, but unfortunately we are fighting amongst ourselves and thus aiding the sinful world. Instead of staying out of the world, we’re joining in with the world. How then can we ever make a good and serious difference eh? No way! As Cousin Sol so wisely said so long ago in Proverbs. ‘The foolishness of man perverteth (twists) his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord.’ (Prov. 19:3)

And is that ever the gospel truth my brethren! The unwise things we do, like the prodigal son excitedly leaving home to see the world and foolishly squandering all his wealth, disrupts our lives and turns us away from God. It can’t do anything but that! And I do hope that the pandemic of the last couple years, and all the other problems, both man-made and natural, that we have suddenly gained in our world, will at last bring us to our senses and cause us to turn back to our Creator, Controller, Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!

And to help us do just that, let’s go to Him in sincere prayer, through our Friday Chant, laying our concerns before Him, for His divine help. As one confident but humble voice. ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through this past week. You know it’s been rough… what with all the anxiety, the confusion and havoc that the Covid-19 virus and our many other problems are causing. We can’t seem to fix it on our own Lord, that means we desperately need your help.

Oh heavenly Father, with your omnipotent help, and our trusting faith, we know that we can stand strong and steadfast and defeat both the virus and the unrest in our streets. So Lord, we sincerely ask you today to give the governments and those involved in the forefront of this serious and unexpected storm, the wise guidance to handle the situation properly, with the least amount of loss to life and property as possible. And please help those of us who must go out to work amidst all the confusion, to be responsible and to stay safe, and avoid any more serious setbacks.

And Lord, we fervently pray that You’ll use this situation to bring a lot of backsliders back to your fold, show them the error of their ways. And please introduce a whole new flock, who will embrace your LOVE and compassion by the example, we, your faithful believers set. Yes Lord, please use this pandemic and the unrest in the streets as a means of restoring faith in You, so that our sinful world can wake up and smell the coffee, sweet and strong! We pray this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen!’

And now, like the prodigal son, we’ve got to make our way painfully back home, keeping our promises and showing right motives in our hearts. Much LOVE!

…only heartaches and disasters…can truly drive us back home to God…
