The Necessity for New Believers to Give up Their Old Way of Life for the New One in Christ!

Ephesians 4:24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Ah friends, the chilly days, or rather the chilly nights, seem like they are now here to stay, for the daytime temperature still isn’t too bad when there’s sunshine. Unfortunately though, today the sun is not as powerful as we would like it, thus it’s somewhat cloudy. But as we keep saying, regardless of the weather conditions, once we’re alive and kicking, and living for Jesus, we’re all right! In fact better than all right, we’re wonderful, filled with His LOVE and peace! We can’t ask for anything better than that!

However, our fellow believers in Jamaica are surely not so well off, as Hurricane Melissa batters their beautiful island paradise. Please, let’s pray for them, that the loss of lives and property will not be too bad, and that godly recovery will begin right away. For a serious hurricane is no matter to joke about, as I can tell from personal experience in 1963, when Hurricane Flora which blew down Tobago much earlier than forecasted and caused enormous damage.

And today we’re going to talk about believers putting on the new man, as Bruh Paul wrote to the Ephesians. ‘This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind. Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through (because of) the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness (hardening) of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness (licentiousness), to work all uncleanness with greediness.’ (Eph. 4:17-20)

Yes my brethren, Bruh Paul there continues to spell out what constitutes a worthy walk of faithful believers in Christ. And the scholars further explain that ‘since each Christian is divinely enabled with some spiritual gift, he must walk not as other Gentiles walk, lest his much-needed contribution to the church’s growth be sorely missed. Unbelieving Gentiles live in the vanity of their mind, without proper purpose, causing all their efforts to obtain happiness to end in failure.

The blindness of their heart refers to the hardness of their will. Gentiles’ obstinacy against the divine will has caused them to be separated from God’s life. Being past feeling means “having become calloused.” These unbelievers have gone so deep in sin that they are insensitive to moral right and wrong.’

And we see that immoral attitude running rampant all over our world today. Very few of us care about moral right and wrong nowadays. The current fashion is to do whatever feels right to us. However that does not apply to true believers in Christ Jesus. As Bruh Paul continues: ‘But ye have not so learned Christ;’ (Eph. 4;20) In other words, we didn’t learn that behaviour of the unbelieving Gentiles in our Christian teaching.

Instead, ‘If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus. That ye put off concerning the former conversation (conduct) the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.’ (Eph. 4:21-24)

Now that’s what we’ve been taught in our Christian teaching; to put off the old man, or ‘renounce our pre-conversion life and sins; to be renewed in … your mind, or be constantly changed, being brought more and more into line with God’s viewpoint, as well as to put on the new man, which is to assume a new nature (character) and conduct (life) at conversion.’

And it’s all well and good to tell us to do that stuff, but how do we do it in real life? But that’s the beauty of most of Bruh Paul’s writing; after giving you some doctrine or task, he usually gives you some practical advice on how to accomplish said task. And here, he does give some practical advice on how to take off the old man and put on the new one.

‘Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place (an opportunity) to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.’ (Eph. 4:25-32)

Yes mih people, that’s what our world ought to look like. As the scholars tell us: ‘This section gives practical guidelines as to how “the old man” can be laid aside and how “the new man” can be assumed in daily living. The passage specifies five sins to be discarded, the virtues that are to replace them, and the motive for such exchange: (1) Lying is to be replaced by truth-telling, since Christians are fellow members. (2) Sinful anger is to be replaced by (briefly held) righteous indignation, that the Devil may not be given an opportunity.

(3) Theft is to be replaced by honest work, so that one may have the means to meet the needs of others. (4) Foul language is to be replaced by gracious speech, that it may edify others and not grieve the Holy spirit. (5) Resentment and wrath are to give way to kindness and forgiveness, since God has forgiven us through Christ’s sacrificial doings.’

Now, putting those actions into daily practice will surely take a lot of energy and perseverance, but let’s not forget we have the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. The long and short of the story though is that we sincerely want to make the changes Bruh Paul describes. If we do, then we will succeed, because we will make the effort, and we can do anything through Christ who strengthens us. So, let’s go home declaring our Tuesday Mantra, letting all and sundry know to whom we belong, lock, stock and barrel.

As one strong and sincere voice: ‘In God’s eyes, I’m not what I do. I’m not what I have. I’m not what people say about me. I am the beloved of God, that’s who I am. No one can take that from me. I don’t have to worry. I don’t have to hurry. I can trust my friend Jesus and share His LOVE with my immediate neighbours, as well as with the whole wide world! Glory be!’

And having said that, it now behooves us to go out and share the amazing LOVE and friendship of Christ with others, so that they too can come to know and LOVE Him like we do! Much LOVE!

…with the right motives…and godly perseverance…we can do anything that’s in God’s will…

Hebrews 11:1. Now faith is the substance (realization) of things hoped for, the evidence (conviction) of things not seen.

Alright you laze-abouts, it’s Saturday, so get in some much needed rest! (smile) Ah mih breddren, with the hectic pace our modern-day society is setting for us, we have to find… no make the time to rest, or else we’ll just burn out and disintegrate. It’s definitely not a healthy pace, especially when some of us are forced to work two or even three part time jobs at miserly wages just to make ends meet.

And it’s not getting better, but worse. The haves are getting greedier, always wanting more, unashamedly taking the little of the have-nots. What a crying shame! And then they wonder why there is so much tension, strife, disenchantment and all the other negative emotions and situations that are currently plaguing the land.

But as followers of Jesus Christ, we do not have to despair, because He has sincerely promised to look after us. And He does keep His promises! And since it’s Saturday, let’s look at some quotes we received from our friend Anselm, as he aspires to inspire us for a better tomorrow.

The first one says: ‘The key to being happy is knowing you have the power to choose what to accept and what to let go.’ I don’t know if it’s the key to being happy, but it certainly is a very important ingredient. Your being able to choose what to accept and not to accept, plays a major role in your overall life, and thus your happiness. Just think about how slaves must feel, when they have no say in what affects them.

Then there is this bit of advice: ‘The best way to get things done is to simply begin.’ And the old Chinese Proverb corroborates that. ‘The longest journey begins with the first step.’ Yeh friends, in everything we do, we have to make a start, so why not just go ahead and do it without any procrastination eh? But then that brings us to: ‘When you feel like quitting, think about why you started.’

Now that’s an interesting concept. It ought to remind you of all the positive superlatives (smile) with which you described the adventure in the first place, and why you thought it important enough to get excited and put it all together. The end and the beginning of a project are always exciting, but it’s the hard middle part that shows if we’re truly serious about it.

And what about this one: ‘Make yourself a priority. At the end of the day, you’re your longest commitment.’ There is mucho truth to that, we have ourselves forever, and if we don’t take good care of us, we won’t be of much or any use to others.

A lot of us in this fast paced society mistakenly believe that looking after ourselves is somewhat narcissistic, but how can you cope properly, if you aren’t able to handle the stuff that comes against you? We should be our top priority …after God!

And finally, we come to the last quote: ‘Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.’ Well not exactly; faith is the only thing stronger than fear. But hope is a part of faith, it’s the springboard of faith, so to speak, for we can’t have faith without first having hope. And we can plainly see that in our Bit. ‘Now faith is the substance (realization) of things hoped for, the evidence (conviction) of things not seen.’

Yeh friends, faith is the outgrowth of hope, where we believe that we will receive things that we haven’t yet seen. The world says you’ll believe it when you see it, but Christ says, believe it, then you’ll see it.That’s why the Good Book tells us of certain faith champions.

‘By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice… By faith, Enoch was translated (so) that he should not see death… By faith, Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark… By faith, Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed, and he went out not knowing whither he went (where he was going)….

Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of (bore) a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.’ All of that’s in Chapter 11. Look at that eh, Sarah was 90 and Abraham was 100 when they had a biological child, Isaac. As the scripture says, ‘because she judged him faithful who had promised.’

Ah mih people, faith is born of great hope! And the Good Book reminds us: ‘But without faith it is impossible to please him (God): for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.’ (Heb.11:6)

Oh my brethren, we certainly can’t approach God unless we believe that He exists, and then that He rewards those who seek Him with all their hearts, souls and minds! That’s an essential part of our faith.

And we’ll close with this classic situation on faith by Abraham. Now after waiting for about 25 years for the promise of Isaac to be actually fulfilled, then the Lord told him to go and sacrifice the child who was going to be the one to provide him with heirs more numerous than the grains of sand on the beach or stars in the heaven.

Now being an intelligent man, Abraham must have wondered how Isaac would perform that feat if he were dead. But deep down he knew that the Lord was faithful to His promises, and that somehow or the other something would happen to cause Isaac’s life to be spared.

So he followed God’s command, and we all know that as he raised his hand to kill Isaac, the Lord stopped him, it was merely a test of his faith, and provided instead a ram entangled in a nearby bush for the sacrifice. (Gen. 22:1-19)

Ah friends, ALL the champions of faith in the history of our church fervently believed and showed it in their lives, and if we want to also be champions of faith, then we too have to fervently believe and show it in our daily lives. Let’s hope that we all desire greatly to be champions of faith! Much LOVE!

Sorry that the Bit is a tad on the late side friends, but I had an Ironman’s Breakfast to go to early this morning at the church. And like every time I go out I seem to come back tired, so I had to rest a spell. Chuh! I’m tired of being tired yes!

The great thing about this Ironman side though, is that none of us are under fifty…and possibly older. What a hoot! But we do get done the things we need to get done. And that’s the important thing.

Now since today is Saturday, let’s contemplate a few of our Friend Anselm’s quotes of this past week. And this first one is very interesting and meaningful to many of us. ‘If I have something to say, I want it to be meaningful.’

Oh friends, so often, especially in this world of social media, we talk such foolishness; stuff that doesn’t deserve to be even thought about, much less spoken! Where has the wisdom gone of if you don’t have anything sensible to say, shut up? I guess that we all feel that what we’re saying is sensible. I beg to differ.

This second quote is also interesting and pertains very nicely to our Christian faith. ‘Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever.’ And isn’t that gospel truth! As Christians, we’re taught that ‘this too shall pass.’

And that better had be true, because that’s what I’m counting on in these days of medical malaise. (smile) But under no circumstance are we ever to quit, for quitting does not exist in Jesus’ vocabulary. Every time we fail or fall, we’re to get right back up, and with God’s help, continue pushing forward.

And the last quote says: ‘A lot of times I find that people who are blessed with the most talent don’t ever develop that attitude, and the ones who aren’t blessed in that way are the most competitive and have the biggest heart.’

Now that is ever so true! I’ve seen it happen over a lifetime, where the most talented are the least motivated, and the ones that rise to the pinnacle of their profession, are usually the least talented but hardest working.

Some might even dare to put me in that category, especially my High School Principal, who liked to write on my report card: ‘Lazy boy, could do better.’ But I don’t think I’m that talented in any particular area. I’m more a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy. (smile)

Anyway, here is our Bit for today: ‘Forbearing (bearing with) one another and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.’ And this is definitely the last day for it. I just never got in all I had to say yesterday.

Now we’re going to quote some of Bruh Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, per the new life in Christ, when we’re born again. ‘That ye put off concerning the former conversation (conduct) the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts;

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.’ (Eph.4:22-24)

Yes friends, when we receive Christ, we’re to renounce our old way of living, and renew our minds with the things of God, constantly improving, getting stronger in our walk of faith.

Then Bruh Paul offers some practical guidelines on how to throw off the old man and put on the new. Here are a few of them. ‘Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good for edifying, that it may minister grace unto hearers.

And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you with all malice:

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.’ (Eph.4:29-32)

Yeh mih breddren, those are just some of the things we need to work towards when we become Christians. And please notice how Bruh Paul ends the exhortation; with the tenet on forgiving.

Ah mih people, forgiving in our Christian faith is so important, that I’ll end this series on it by reminding us of some of Jesus’ words on the subject.

‘And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have aught (anything) against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.’ (Mark 11:25-26)

That says it all my fellow believers. So until we meet again tomorrow, the Lord in favour, please let’s get serious about practicing forgiveness nuh, because however we mete it out, that’s exactly how it will be meted back out to us. Much LOVE!

…and forgive us our debts…as we forgive our debtors… (Matt.6:12)
