The Overwhelming Importance of Christians Understanding that Overindulgence in Alcohol is Both Harmful and Ungodly!

Today’s Scrip-Bit   31 July 2026   Ephesians 5:18.

Ephesians 5:18.         And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (dissipation), but be filled with the Spirit;

And the shouts of ‘TGIF! Thank God it’s Friday and the weekend is here at last!’ were even more boisterous than normal because this last day of July begins the Civic Holiday long weekend with Caribana and all the other festivities taking place, in Toronto and neighbouring cities. And with the glorious weather we’ve been having over this past week, hopes are at the maximum for a splendiferous weekend!

But as always, please, let’s remember that modicum of circumspection in all our activities, because you know the dire consequences that can occur when we lose that sense of equilibrium and allow things to get out of hand. So let’s enjoy the weekend, but as Bruh Paul warned the Ephesians, ‘And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (dissipation), but be filled with the Spirit;’ (Eph. 5:18) (smile)

And as I was chuckling at that last sentence, I was led to some more scripture that advise against excess libation. And who do you think is at the top of the list on the subject? None other than Cousin Sol, the wisest and richest man ever, who had many opportunities to test his theories. In chapter 20 of Proverbs, he solemnly declares: ‘Wine is a mocker, strong (intoxicating) drink is raging (arouses brawling): and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.’ (Prov. 20:1) Yes friends, wine is indeed a mocker because it deceives those who imbibe it, and that doesn’t count as wise living.

But the passage I like on the subject is this from Proverbs 23, where Cousin Sol really gets into it. He says: ‘Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry (linger) long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour (sparkles) in the cup, when it moveth itself aright (goes down smoothly). At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder (viper).Thine eyes behold strange women (strange things), and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick (hurt); they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it (another drink) yet again.’ (Prov. 23:29-35) And does Cousin Sol ever know what he’s talking about, for any of us who has imbibed too much have fallen into similar traps, with our minds playing tricks on us, because that’s how alcohol affects the human body.

And the scholars offer these explanations of the passage. ‘Six rhetorical questions drive home the fact that alcoholism has both physical and psychological effects (vs.29) These effects are further specified: physical and psychological poisoning (vs.32); delusion (vs.33, strange women should be translated “strange things”); stumbling (vs.34); unconscious wounds (vs.35a)); and enslavement (35b).’ That last one we would now couch in nicer terms, calling it ‘addiction’ rather than ‘enslavement’, but the effects are all the same, a very strong,  uncontrollable urge to imbibe the dangerous liquid. 

And the sad part is that alcohol has become one of the biggest businesses in our society today, with the resultant addictions running sky high. Unfortunately too, it’s the source of much family and relational upheaval, as well as criminal activity, both in an attempt to get the alcohol or to get funds to purchase it. It’s one of the worse products that our society produces and embraces, but it also brings great wealth and fortune to those who produce and sell it. And nothing’s wrong with a drink of alcohol now and then, but the problem is that many of us don’t have the self-control or self-discipline to moderate ourselves when imbibing it, so we go on imbibing until it’s too late.

And what’s the first question we’re asked when we visit somebody: ‘Yuh want a drink?’ Ah mih people, firewater, the brown girl in the bottle, booze, and the many other names by which we call it, is the devil’s own concoction, for I’ve seen family and friends reduced to absolutely nothing by being addicted to the drink. And there’s nothing sadder than seeing a well-educated, once prosperous person, wandering the streets in an alcoholic daze begging for money to buy the stuff.

But the people who prosper from it don’t really care. In fact many of them are alcoholics themselves, only thing is they don’t have to go around begging for money to buy it, and they can hide behind their wealth and power and ease of getting the intoxicating liquid. And there’s no sense in prohibiting it’s production and sale either, for look at what happened during the period called Prohibition in the U.S in the early part of the last century. Alcohol flourished underground more than ever, and criminal activity increased severely over it’s sale and acquisition.

The problem is that whatever mankind truly desires, it will get one way or the other. Just look at all the prohibiting laws on the other kinds of recreational drugs, yet they still are out there in vast quantities, making money for some, as well as causing criminal activities over them. Who knows the answer my fellow believers? I certainly don’t. But we must make sure we help those who might be floundering in those kinds of murky and death-provoking waters. And to help us help them, let’s go to the throne of grace, through our Friday Chant, seeking divine aid in these troubled times.

Altogether: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through another week of work. It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through. You know our many serious problems are escalating instead of improving, and we desperately need your help to fix them. Heavenly Father, with your omnipotent help, and our trusting faith, we know that we can stand strong and steadfast and defeat the simmering unrest in our land. So please give our leaders the wise guidance to handle these unexpected storms properly. 

And despite the anxiety and confusion of these ungodly times, help us to be responsible, and get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that we can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out next week and further your glorious kingdom by the good example we, your faithful believers set. So that our sinful world can wake up and smell the coffee, wake up and smell it sweet and strong! We pray this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! Amen!’ 

And having said all of that, we believers also need to wake up and smell the coffee, because our witness for Christ in these trying times is certainly not good enough. So let’s wake up and get moving for Christ! Much LOVE!

Today’s Scrip-Bit   18 May 2026   Ephesians 5:18.

Ephesians 5:18.        And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (dissipation); but be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Oh friends, you won’t believe that it was only late Sunday evening, I realized that this was the Victoria Day long weekend, with cottage country coming alive for the summer and people beginning to plant their gardens. That just goes to show I was totally wrapped up in whatever I was wrapped up in. And don’t ask what that was, because I don’t even know. (smile) Anyway, many of us are blessed to have this Monday off, and with yesterday’s good weather, most likely to be repeated today, I can imagine the celebrations for this long weekend that usually ushers in the summer will be very big and boisterous.

But as always, let’s remember to have a modicum of circumspection as we celebrate, and don’t behave like leggo beasts, or imbibe too much of whatever you plan to imbibe, because you know that kind of behaviour only brings accidents and other heartbreaking stuff, that can often have serious, lifelong negative consequences. End of Sermon! 

And as I was looking through the Bible for something to write on, my eyes caught this section of Bruh Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, that seems rather appropriate for today. (smile) He writes: ‘See then that ye walk circumspectly (carefully) not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (dissipation); but be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ (Eph. 5:15-18) Now didn’t I say that this passage was rather appropriate for today? (smile) 

And if you don’t want to listen to my warning, then you should at least have the common courtesy to listen to Bruh Paul’s and not get inebriated. And as the scholars explain: ‘This verse gives an example of what is and what is not the Lord’s will (vs. 17). Believers are not allowed to be intoxicated with alcoholic beverages; the reason for this prohibition is wherein is excess; that is, drunkenness leads to moral intemperance.

This is clearly contrary to God’s will. His will is that Christians be filled with (by) the Holy Spirit; that is, they are to allow Him to fill them with God’s own life, character and virtues. The analogy between these two moral states is this: a person filled with wine is under its influence; similarly, a Christian is filled with the Spirit when he controls his thoughts attitudes, and actions.’ 

And that’s all basic common sense my brethren! Whatever your mind and body are filled with, will influence your behaviour.  Now, if you don’t believe that Bruh Paul and I know what we’re talking about, then listen to the wisest man ever, Cousin Sol, as he warns from Proverbs. ‘Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging (intoxicating drink arouses brawling): and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.’ (Prov. 20:1) And that’s not a lie, because we see it every day in our debauched society, meaning there are a lot of unwise people around us. 

But here’s the real kicker, as Cousin Sol gets right down into the nitty gritty of drunkenness. He earnestly asks: ‘Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? (Prov. 23:29) Now those are very good questions. And can you guess the answer? ‘They that tarry (linger) at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.’ (Prov. 23:30) And that’s the gospel truth!

Cousin Sol then continues with this wise advice. ‘Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour (sparkles) in the cup, when it moveth itself aright (goes smoothly). At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder (viper). Thine eyes shall behold strange women (things), and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst (heart) of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick (hurt); they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it (another drink) yet again.’ (Prov. 23:31-35)

Ah my people, Cousin Sol does know what he’s talking about. And so do many of us, who have either experienced the feeling of inebriation, or seen someone intoxicated, behave rather poorly. And the scholars add their take on the situation. ‘Six rhetorical questions drive home the fact that alcoholism has both physical and psychological effects (vs. 29). These effects are further specified: physical and psychological poisoning (vs. 32); delusion (vs. 33); stumbling (vs. 34); unconscious wounds (vs.35a); and enslavement (vs.35b).’

And isn’t it strange that all this stuff has been happening since Adam was a little boy, and yet we still greatly desire to imbibe the fire water. Fortunes have been made, and still are being made, on its production and sale. The devil certainly has us hooked on that one. But here’s what we should really be doing, as Bruh Paul advised the Ephesians. ‘Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.’ (Eph. 5:19-21)

And to help us do just that, let’s go to the throne of grace, through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn for some divine help. Altogether:  ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise and thank You  this Monday morning for our jobs; jobs we sometimes don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose; keeping lives and families together. We also thank You Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm You’ve wrought in our weary souls over the weekend. It’s that rejuvenation of spirit which now allows us to sally forth with confidence into the evil and ungodly world, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s evil schemes.

But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing Your powerful, protective spiritual armour! We surrender our all to You, and humbly ask that You allow Your incredible aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit to lead and guide all Your servants, as we go out to meet the enemy in battle. Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, thereby furthering Your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy Name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! Amen!

And to be able to do that, we must stay away from the fire water this holiday Monday! Much LOVE!

Isaiah 5:12b.       but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands.

And the spring-like weather continues, for it certainly looks like another bright and ‘springish’ Tuesday in my area, although the computer was just telling me that heavy rain will soon come. And though that’s not a bad thing, since we haven’t had any precipitation around here for a while, let’s hope that that rain behaves like my Jamaican people, when they say, ‘soon come,’ meaning it could be a long time coming. (smile) Let’s hope it waits until I come back from my doctor’s appointment this afternoon. (smile) 

Now, the Good Library just opened unto an interesting scripture from the Book of Isaiah. I chuckled when I first read it, but believe it can be very efficacious, that’s helpful and effective in these unruly, provocative and annoying times. It says: ‘Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink (pursue intoxicating drink); that continue until night, till wine inflame them! And the harp, and the viol (strings), the tabret (tambourine), and pipe (flute), and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands.’ (Is. 5:11-12) 

What an interesting and rather appropriate scripture for our times my people, because there is certainly a lot of ongoing drunkenness and debauchery in this ungodly and evil world, where not many are paying any attention to the works and words of the Lord God Jehovah. And by the way, that scripture comes from a sixfold set of God-induced woes pronounced by the prophet on the sins of Judah. And can we ever use some of that in these carousing days, when strong drink is master of the day, and can be found in every nook and cranny of our neighbourhoods, both legally and illegally. 

Unfortunately too, when almost every occasion calls for the provision of alcohol, the young people are imbibing it at a terrible rate, as though it’s going out of style. And sadly they don’t know how to drink, can’t hold their liquor. A couple drinks of the watered down alcohol they sell in North America and as the saying goes, they’re three sheets to the wind. But they consider they’ve had a good time, even when they don’t remember what they did the night before. And believe me, in my many years, I’ve seen, and also experienced what continual imbibing of too much alcohol can do. 

Ah Lord eh! I’ve had a few drunken spells in my younger days, and always regretted it the next day. But I’ve also seen wise drinking like what my father and grandfather pursued. They liked their drink, and might have some every day, but never had too much at any one time. And who better than good, ole Cousin Sol, to tell us about the foolhardiness of imbibing too much alcohol, most likely from His own experience (smile) as he tried all the pleasures of this world, seeking  peace, and contentment, but found it all to be vanity of vanities, strictly futile. 

In the second portion of Chapter 23 of Proverbs, where he’s talking about the Correction of a child, he offers this bit of wisdom. ‘Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. Be not among winebibbers (drunkards); among riotous eaters of flesh (gluttons): For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.’ ((Prov. 23:19-21) And that’s the gospel truth, as we see it happen every day in our society. And if that wasn’t enough, Cousin Sol later on in the same chapter, devotes a whole section to the problem, aptly calling it ‘Wine’s Bite.’ 

He writes: ‘Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling (complaints)? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry (linger) long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup (sparkles in the cup), when it moveth itself aright, (goes down smoothly). At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder (viper). Thine eyes shall behold strange women (strange things), and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst (heart) of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick (hurt); they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again (have another drink).’ (Prov. 23:29-35) 

Oh friends, Cousin Sol really tells it like it is! Alcohol can be terribly addictive if you use it to lessen your aches and pains, both emotional and physical. And we’re seeing the terrible effect of it right now in our current society, where alcoholism is one of the biggest problems we face. And it seems to be getting worse, as our economic and other situations also get  worse. Many of us turn to the lady in the bottle to ease our pain, but she only drops us even lower in the mire of disappointment and discouragement, until you come to the stage where you cannot do without her for even a few hours. And that cannot ever be a good thing! 

And despite the good intentions of groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, the plague of Alcoholism doesn’t seem to be lessening in any meaningful way. And it won’t if alcohol remains as such an important part of our modern lifestyle and is easily available to both young and old. And that’s not a call for Prohibition, for when they tried that down in the early nineteen hundreds, it caused all sorts of criminal activities and even more drunkenness than before. That’s because when mankind wants something badly, and you prevent him from having it, he will find a way, legally or illegally to get it. 

It’s the same thing we see with the drug situation. There wouldn’t be all the criminal activities associated with drugs if they were legal. Although I’m not saying that we should legalize everything. (smile) However, we do need to take a close look at the situation and come up with a better solution than we currently have. End of Sermon!

It’s like a cancer in our society, possibly worse than the sickness itself, because it’s so all pervasive and permeates every strata of our society. 

However, it makes money, lots of it, both for the distillers and the government, so it won’t likely be lessened or downplayed in our lifetime. What a pity! However, for those of us doing our best to live righteously for and in Christ, let’s go home declaring (yesss!!!) our Tuesday Mantra, letting all and sundry know to whom we belong lock, stock and barrel. As one strong and sincere voice: ‘In God’s eyes, I’m not what I do. I’m not what I have. I’m not what people say about me. I am the beloved of God, that’s who I am. No one can take that from me. I don’t have to worry. I don’t have to hurry. I can trust my friend Jesus and share His LOVE with my immediate neighbours, as well as with the whole wide world! Glory be!’ 

And having said that, it’s now our bounden duty to go out and share the amazing friendship and LOVE of Christ with others, so that they too can come to know and LOVE Him, like we do! Much LOVE!

John 3:16.   For God so LOVED the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life!

Oh friends, how good it is to be alive on this Saturday morning in May, the Victoria Day long weekend! Brother, life might not always be great, but it sure is good to be living with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, our Leader, Redeemer, Prince of Peace, our Immanuel, and the many other things He means to us! Glory to His holy name! The Name that’s higher than any other name in the universe, and the one that all knees will eventually bow to! 

Wow! That’s our Jesus! Give Him much praise and glory my people! Exalt His name in all the earth, as Bruh David so rightly says! Oh, I guess the ole fella is really feeling it this morning! (smile) But why not eh? Life might not be fair, but our wonderful God is Good! That’s all we can ask! And as the man said: ‘Don’t ever confuse life with God, cause they are two entirely different things! 

Now let’s see if I can get my head around these quotes that our friend Anselm sent us this week, as he sincerely aspires to inspire us for a better tomorrow. (smile) It’s not always easy. And we’ll begin with this one: ‘Don’t find the fault, find the remedy.’ 

And oh, are we ever so good at finding fault in this modern day society. It’s known as the blame game, and we play it so well. But as the saying goes too, ‘If you’re not a part of the answer, then you’re a part of the problem!’ So let’s just remember that today nuh, and act accordingly. 

And then there is this: ‘Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion.’ I don’t know if it’s the beginning of delusion or not, but I do know that you will get nowhere in this earthly life without discipline…and plenty of it too. For everything you attempt to do down here on earth requires discipline to some degree or other. 

So mouthing a lot of proactive words but not doing what it takes to put them into action, is a useless exercise. Remember friends, though our words have power, they don’t manifest themselves without some kind of action on our part! 

Now hear this: ‘Success is not how high you have climbed, but how you make a positive difference to the world.’ And that is ever so true my fellow believers in Jesus Christ! The evil and ungodly world in which we dwell considers success as rising high in power, politics, wealth and other worldly things. 

But in Jesus’ economy, those things are mostly colour commentary. What He considers important is what you’ve done to help your fellow man, how you’ve tried to pursue peace and LOVE in His name! That’s because all the things the world considers important are but fleeting treasures which you can’t take with you to eternal life! 

But the peace, LOVE and goodness of Jesus go with you till eternity! So please, let’s stop trying to run down the things of the world nuh, because we’ll only kill ourselves in the process, then have to leave it all to others here to waste and fight over. 

And then we have this interesting quote: ‘If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.’ Now there is a lot of truth in that. If you inspire others to rise above their current station in life, be it for good or evil, then you do have some leadership qualities. 

Jesus just wants you to inspire others to do good and not evil, as the Good Book says of Him. ‘How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.’ (Acts 10:38) Oh my people, there is no better example in God’s great world for us to follow than that of Jesus! 

And that brings us to our last quote which encapsulates all the others that have gone before. It seems like our friend Anselm was on a leadership kick this week. (smile)  But this last one says: ‘A leader is a dealer in hope.’ And that’s no lie! Else why would you follow someone if they don’t give you hope in whatever area you’re choosing to follow them in eh? No reason whatsoever! You might as well just do it yourself! 

The sad part though is that leaders are also human and thus have Achilles heels so they can sometimes fall apart or lead us astray. But friends the greatest Leader in this universe is our one and only Leader, Jesus Christ! Talk about being the Master of Hope! Hn! He has that name so cornered that it’s impossible to ever take it away from Him! 

Just look at the things He’s done for us nuh! Coming down from His comfortable perch in heaven to die for a bunch of ungrateful sinners! Going to the cross with nary a whimper, like a lamb being led to innocent slaughter, suffering the ultimate in humiliation, shame and ‘sufferation,’ just because the Father asked him to. 

So that we could have hope for a better tomorrow; a tomorrow not wrecked by sin, shame and eternal damnation, but one securely and sincerely rooted in peace, LOVE, mercy, grace, forgiveness, redemption, reconciliation, justification, sanctification, salvation and eternal life! 

Wow! Which other Leader has ever promised that kind of stuff eh, much less given it like Jesus has? NONE!That’s why Jesus is the GREATEST: because He gives us the most HOPE of any Leader that this unfortunate world has ever known! Listen to these immortal words of His: ‘For God so LOVED the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life!’ 

Now where else is it possible to find such HOPE like that eh friends? Nowhere else but in Jesus! And He didn’t end there either: ‘For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.’ (John 3:17) 

Oh my people, don’t those fateful, faithful and true words just lift your spirits and give you a feeling of peace and HOPE, that you can’t find anywhere else in this world? It surely does for me! And what really is HOPE eh Friends? Merely a longing for something, preferably something good! 

And the long and short of the story is that God promises, if we believe in His Son, have HOPE in Him, that feeling of great expectations, which lead to faith, a certain sure belief, and which grows ever stronger, as we see His awesome promises come true, that our lives will be filled with wonder and amazement, leading to days of beautiful, exhilarating, eternal living with our Triune God! 

Now what can we long for that’s better than that eh, what better HOPE can there ever be? NONE whatsoever! Much LOVE!

…the beginning of true HOPE…begins with believing in Jesus…

 

 

 

Today’s Scrip-Bit 2 August 2013 Proverbs 20:1

Proverbs 20:1.    Wine is a mocker, strong (intoxicating) drink is raging (arouses brawling): and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
 
Oh Friends, it’s Friday 2 August 2013… Wow!! I got it right! And I did check the bottom right hand corner of the computer console to make sure. (smile) And yuh know what else? It’s not raining! Yesterday turned out quite nicely, and allowed the Caribana festivities to go on, unimpeded by rain. I just hope it stays that way for the Pan Competition tonight.
 
And one more thing; while I’ve been writing, the populace has been going crazy shouting, ‘TGIF! Thank God is Friday! Thank God we finally emancipated, we independent, we free! Thank God we free at last! Glory Hallelujah!’
 
Yes Friends, we are indeed free, free from all sorts of stuff; be it slavery, work for the weekend, relationships, Lucifer, etc. But please remember that any kind of freedom always brings with it certain responsibilities, for then we have nobody to turn to, or blame for whatever predicament we find ourselves in.
 
So there’s really no free ride in this life, contrary to what some of us think and /or believe. That’s why it’s necessary to always keep our wits about us and be guided by the Holy Spirit, rather than the lust of the flesh. So let’s chant our Friday Chant to get ourselves in the right frame of mind to handle this long weekend, where Lucifer will be out prowling with a vengeance, looking for any toehold he can latch on to.
 
With one accord now, let’s chant: ‘Oh Lord, thanks for getting me safely through another week of work! It hasn’t been easy, but with your generous help, I made it through. Now, please help me to get sufficient fun, fellowship, rest and relaxation in these two short days off, so that I can be renewed and refreshed in soul, body and mind, to go back out and do it all over again next week, furthering your glorious kingdom with each step I take. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.’
 
And that brings us smack, dab right to our Bit. ‘Wine is a mocker, strong (intoxicating) drink is raging (arouses brawling): and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.’
 
Words of undeniable truth my brethren! For when the fire water gets in our brain and body, it sure causes us to do all sorts of foolish, unwise things. And I’m going to quote a couple verses of Bruh Paul’s famous speech to the Ephesians, which we heard yesterday, because I want to include some important notes from the scholars.
 
Here’s what Bruh Paul told the Ephesians. ‘Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess (dissipation); but be filled with the Spirit.’ (Eph.5:17-18) 
 
Now here’s what the scholars have to say. ‘5:18: This verse gives an example of what is and what is not the Lord’s will (v. 17) Believers are not allowed to be intoxicated with alcoholic beverages; the reason for this prohibition is wherein is excess; that is, drunkenness leads to moral intemperance. 
 
This is clearly contrary to God’s will. His will is that Christians be filled with (by) the Spirit; that is, they are to allow Him to fill them with God’s own life, character and virtues. The analogy between these two moral states is this: a person filled with wine is under its influence; similarly, a Christian is filled with the Spirit when He controls his thoughts, attitudes and actions.’
 
Oh my people, please let’s take all this stuff seriously, otherwise we’re liable to end up in serious trouble – physically, financially, emotionally – and blow whatever good thing(s) we have going for us, both with man and with God! Such is the power of alcohol, especially when it is encouraged by the wiles and taunts of Beelzebub.
 
I personally don’t have a problem with a drink now and then, here and there, but unfortunately many of us can’t handle it, so the wisest choice is simply to leave it alone. And all of us are very aware of the great toll that the abuse of alcohol is taking on our society; the drinking and driving, the fatal accidents, the crime sprees, the domestic violence, etc. etc. So please, please, if you know you can’t handle it, just leave it be nuh.
 
Hn, hn! I just remembered the old saying re some people only have to smell the cork and they get drunk. (smile) But it’s quite true. A lot of people can’t even smell the fumes from the bottle without getting tipsy. That’s because the alcohol reacts on everybody in different ways.
 
Now let’s end with some wise words from Cousin Sol, re the brown girl in the bottle. Sorry, nowadays she comes in all different colours, sizes and potencies, but the end result is the same.
 
Listen as Cousin Sol tells the sordid tale. ‘Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who hath babbling (complaints)? Who hath wounds without a cause? Who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry (linger) long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look thou not upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour (sparkles) in the cup, when it moveth itself aright (goes smoothly).
 
At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like and adder (a viper). Thine eyes shall behold strange women (strange things), and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst (heart) of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick (hurt); they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it (another drink) yet again.’ (Prov.23:29-35) 
 
Oh what fools we are my brethren! Though we know the evils of alcohol, we continue to imbibe it unwisely, then fall on our faces, promise never again, then get back up and do it all over again.
 
And here’s what the scholars say about Cousin Sol’s story. ’23:29-35: Six rhetorical questions drive home the fact that alcoholism has both physical and psychological effects (v.29). These effects are further specified: physical and psychological poisoning (v.32); delusion (v.33), stumbling (v.34); unconscious wounds (v.35a); and enslavement (v.35b).’
 
There we have it Friends, in black and white! So this Caribana weekend… forget the Scotia Bank Carnival nonsense, because it will always be known as Caribana. Yes, this Caribana weekend, when so many opportunities abound to get black up and make fools of ourselves, do harm, sometimes irreparable harm to ourselves and others, let’s remember Granny’s advice nuh. ‘Sonny boy, drunk or sober, mind yuh business.’
 
And that’s eternal wisdom my brethren. Much LOVE!
 
…to drink or not to drink…that is the question…for one can lead to two or more…but none…will preserve a clear head…and also stymie Lucifer…
