The ONLY True Hope For Man, is found ONLY in Jesus!

Hebrews 12:2a.         Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher (originator and perfector) of our faith;

And after Saturday comes Sunday, which means we’re heading for the Lord’s sanctuary on the Lord’s Day, to offer up praise, worship and thanksgiving, while receiving strength, confidence, renewed faith and a fully refuelled spirit; one that’s filled to overflowing! And all we’re doing there is what Psalm 100 highly recommends: ‘Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.’  (Ps. 100:4)

Wow! What a wise and wonderful scripture passage! Now, this commentary explains that ‘This verse encourages entering God’s presence with a heart filled with gratitude and joyful worship. It highlights the importance of expressing thankfulness and praise as a way to approach God.’ And are we ever taking it to heart this Sunday morning. So, let’s prepare our vocal chords to sing forth an old but wonderful hymn titled ‘Whispering Hope,’ written by Philadelphian Septimus Winner (1827-1902), a well-known poet, composer and violinist.

Many of you old timers will remember hearing the sultry male voice of Jim Reeves singing on your parents’ radio, while some of the young ones will remember the female version done by our Canadian Songbird, Anne Murray, but today we’ll sing a more up-tempo and scintillating version done by the Statler Brothers. And let’s not forget the sweet, wonderful responses in the chorus. Oh, how could we ever forget that eh, for it makes the song even sweeter! (smile)

Therefore, with heartfelt sincerity, let’s raise our voices filled with sacrificial praise to heaven. Singing: ‘Soft as the voice of an angel, Breathing a lesson unheard, Hope with a gentle persuasion Whispers her comforting word: Wait till the darkness is over, Wait till the tempest is done, Hope for the sunshine tomorrow, After the shower is gone. (Refrain: Whispering hope, whispering hope, oh, how welcome thy voice, oh how welcome thy voice, Making my heart, making my heart, in its sorrow rejoice.) 

If, in the dusk of the twilight, Dim be the region afar, Will not the deepening darkness Brighten the glimmering star? Then when the night is upon us, Why should the heart sink away? When the dark midnight is over, Watch for the breaking of day. [Refrain] Hope, as an anchor so steadfast, Rends the dark veil for the soul, Whither the Master has entered, Robbing the grave of its goal;

Come then, oh, come, glad fruition, Come to my sad weary heart; Come, O Thou blest hope of glory, Never, oh, never depart.(Refrain: Whispering hope, whispering hope, oh, how welcome thy voice, oh how welcome thy voice, Making my heart, making my heart, in its sorrow rejoice…making my heart, making my heart, in its sorrow rejoice…’

That was certainly wonderful my fellow believers, and you didn’t let me down with the responses in the chorus. (smile) And as always, heaven was overjoyed and joined us to regale our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ in worshipful song. And what’s the song about, you ask? It’s basically about hope and faith and the reliable anchor that we have in Jesus. The Author of Hebrews puts it this way, when talking about the promise of God.

‘For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise…. Wherein God willing more abundantly (determining) to shew the heirs of promise the immutability (unchangeableness) of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath.

That by two immutable (unchangeable) things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil (in the Presence behind the veil). Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made (having become) an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.’ (Heb. 6:13-15; 17-20)

And what does all of the mean? The scholars explain it thus: ‘God’s covenant with Abraham, which involves salvation (Gal. 3:15-25), is secure, being based upon two immutable things, that is elements that cannot change. First, God’s promise is based on His own unchanging Word. He cannot lie, nor will He allow His Word to fail (Matt. 5:18; John 10:35; 17:17). Further, His Word was confirmed by an oath. And since He can swear by none greater, He swears by Himself. He rests His Word on His holy character.

Then, starting at the end of verse 18, the author uses three pictures to demonstrate the security of being in Christ. First, it is described as a safe retreat for the believer, as were the six cities of refuge in the Old Testament to those allowed their protection (Num. 35:6-32). Second, our hope is sure and steadfast as is a well-placed, unbending anchor. Our anchor is not located in the deepest sea but in the highest heaven.

The third figure is that of a forerunner. Though the figure changes, the location does not. Our forerunner is likewise positioned in the sanctuary of heaven. As our forerunner is far different from the Old Testament priests. In the sanctuary they could intercede for the people, but they could not lead the people in themselves. As our forerunner, Jesus has opened the way before us, that eventually (and certainly) we might enter in with Him.’

Oh friends, I know that is a lot of meat and potatoes, but as Bruh Paul said to the Corinthians, we’ve been in the Word for so long, it’s time we stop drinking milk, just dealing with the basics of Christianity, and start eating heavy, solid food or diving deeper into the Word. It’s time we grew up, matured spiritually. (smile) And we’ll close with these wise words from Hebrews which corroborate all we’ve said.

‘Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher (originator and perfector) of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction (hostility) of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint (be discouraged) in your minds (souls). (Heb. 12:2-3)

Yes my faithful brethren, it’s to Jesus whom we ought to look for everything, each and every day! Much LOVE!

Psalm 22:9.     But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope (caused me to trust) when I was upon my mother’s breast.

Aye Friends, welcome to a terrific Tuesday! And some of you grouchily ask, what’s so terrific about it eh? We still have the same trials and tribulations to endure? But Friends, that’s a shortsighted approach to the situation from a negative position.

Think about it this way nuh. The breath of life is still coursing purposely through our finite bodies. That means the Lord still has use for us down here on earth.

And then think about all the new blessings, mercies, forgiveness, compassion and grace that He’s earmarked specially for today, to bountifully shower down on us, so that we can do His bidding successfully. Now if that doesn’t make it a terrific Tuesday, then I don’t know what does! (smile)

Oh my people, we all know that life was never meant to be a bed of roses, there will be struggles and serious difficulties, but remember when we walk sincerely with Jesus Christ, we will be empowered to face all the negativity with a smile and steadfast faith, and also come through it with glowing report cards, much more Christ-like than when it all began. Wow! What a wonderful God we serve and worship my brethren!

Oh Friends, the Lord has done His part, providing all that wonderful stuff for us. The problem though is that we now need to do our part, which is to gratefully and joyously receive His magnanimous offerings. We can be given lots of stuff, but until we accept and receive them, it’s all a wasted effort.

So today, please let’s look on the bright side of life and accept and receive with thanksgiving all that the Lord has offered us. That will certainly make it a terrific Tuesday!

And it also brings us to our Bit. ‘But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope (caused me to trust) when I was upon my mother’s breast.’

Oh Friends, what an encouraging scripture verse! From our very first breath, our Creator placed a little thing, sorry, a mighty emotion called HOPE in our souls. Yes my brethren, from the very beginning, God made sure that we had something strong and versatile to carry us through the rough times that we would most certainly endure in this earthly life.

So much so, that as Sister Joyce (Joyce Meyer) likes to say, we’ve become ‘prisoners of HOPE’! And that’s a rather apt description of Christians, for if we don’t hold on tightly to HOPE in Jesus, then crapaud smoke we pipe!

The term itself comes from Zechariah, when he talks about Zion’s future king: ‘Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of HOPE: even today do I declare that I will render (restore) double unto thee.’ (Zech.9:12)

Yes my fellow believers, each and every day we need to turn to the stronghold of the Most High God, Jehovah, to replenish the HOPE in our souls! For without that HOPE, we don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell, against Lucifer and his evil minions.

Now Friends, here is some scripture that corroborates all that we’ve been saying. I never planned to include it all, but realized that just pulling a couple verses out of context would not be really helpful. So here goes.

The author of Hebrews is here talking about an anchor of the soul. ‘For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could sware by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men verily sware by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife (dispute). Wherein God, willing more abundantly (determining) to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability (unchangeableness) of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

That by two immutable (unchangeable) things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the HOPE set before us: which HOPE we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil (the Presence behind the veil).

Oh my people, I know that’s a somewhat convoluted and thus difficult section of scripture to understand, so here is some info from the scholars to help us do so. ‘6:13-18. Oh Friends, I know that’s a lot to digest, but I do hope that we take it seriously, and that it brings us all to a greater understanding of God’s Word, for that’s our avowed purpose. Please stay strong and steadfast in Christ; continue to be a prisoner of HOPE. Much LOVE!

…HOPE…it is the heavenly anchor of our souls…and that’s the Lord’s intentional doing…

 

 

Today’s Scrip-Bit 29 January 2014 Romans 5:6

Romans 5:6.    For when we were yet without strength, in due time (at the right time) Christ died for the ungodly.  

Well Friends, it’s Wednesday, and unfortunately I didn’t make any real good memories yesterday. When I sit back in my rocking chair and reflect on yesterday, it will only come up as one that I spent quietly, resting and trying to get rid of the persistent headache. So there are no tales of awesome wonder to relate. (smile)

However, I did find this list of stuff that meditating on God’s Word does for us. I believe I got it from one of Uncle Charles’ (Charles Stanley) sermons. So are here are some of the ways meditation on the word helps and improves our daily lives.
 
‘It quietens our spirit; Purifies our heart; Sharpens our perception; Clarifies our direction; Confirms or cautions our counsel; Increases our faith; Enlarges our view of God. Keeps us aware of God’s presence and power; and finally, it Guides us to success.’
 
Yes Friends, meditating on the Word of God improves our earthly lives in at least those nine ways! So why aren’t we meditating more on God’s Word eh? It brings such amplification, awareness and right perspective to the human mind and life!
 
When we don’t know the meaning of a word, or are looking for a synonym, we check a dictionary and/ or a thesaurus, but when we’re looking for guidance on life, we either fail to or are rather reluctant to check the Guidebook of Life, the Holy Bible, God’s unchanging Word. That’s certainly not wisdom, my people.
 
So hopefully, now that we’ve heard some of the things that pondering on and truly considering God’s Word does for us, we’ll begin meditating on it more. For in light of what we’ve just seen, that is indeed wisdom for the ages!
 
And having thrown in that little spiel on meditation, let’s see what the Lord has in store for us today with our Bit, which deals with one of God’s awesome promises; reconciliation to Him. ‘For when we were yet without strength, in due time (at the right time) Christ died for the ungodly.’
 
And that my Friends, is one of the most amazing, important and gratifying truths in the Good Book!
 
Ah my fellow believers, what an incredible testimony that is to God’s unconditional and undying LOVE for us. Wow! He LOVED us so much, that even at our worst, He was prepared to give us His BEST! What a magnificent and magnanimous God we serve and worship my people!
 
And talking about LOVE, here’s this aside on that topic from Gordon W. Allport (1897-1967) one of the early American psychologists. He so rightly declares that: ‘LOVE received and LOVE given, provide the best therapy.’
 
Oh my brethren, that’s such undeniable truth! And if you don’t believe me, then check it out for yourselves. Take stock of when you’re the happiest, and you’ll undoubtedly discover that it’s when you’ve both given and received LOVE!
 
So since our great God gave us LOVE through Christ’s sacrifice, the onus is now on us to faithfully receive the LOVE; the salvation offered, and then walk steadfast and strong in it, all the way to heaven and eternal life!
 
Unfortunately though, in this troubled and misguided world, too many people seem averse, and oftimes hostile and even murderous, to receiving God’s LOVE and His free gift of salvation and eternal life! How sad my people. How sad that God’s supposed greatest creation refuses to accept His greatest gift; Jesus.
 
Remember, He promised way back in the time of the prophet Isaiah, to bring His chosen people out of darkness, into the light, despite their abominable disobedience and rebellion? ‘The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.’ (Is. 9:2)
 
Well Friends, Jesus Christ was that LIGHT; the fulfillment of that promise! So how can we not accept Him, if we want to live a wise and sensible life in everlasting LIGHT and LOVE!
 
Now my brethren, please check out this awesome scripture of promise, LOVE and faithfulness fulfilled. ‘For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure (perhaps) for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth (demonstrates) his (own) LOVE toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
 
Much more then, being now (having been) justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more being (having been) reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
 
And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement (reconciliation).’ (Rom.4:7-11)
 
Oh Friends and fellow believers, what more can we ask of God eh? Nothing really! For He’s placed everything we need to get reconciled to Him, on a huge silver… no a huge golden platter for us, we just have to receive it now.
 
But I guess most of us scornfully turn up our noses at anything that’s free and so good. But believe me my people, this is the one and only thing in this life that seems too good to be true, but is very, very, very true!
 
So please, let’s get wise and stop the nonsense of living for this world’s fleeting pleasures and perishable material goods nuh, and instead, wisely, sensibly accept the faithfulness of our great and wonderful God, and joyfully receive the LIGHT and LIFE, the TRUTH and the WAY that He so magnanimously sent us; His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ!
 
That my brethren, is heavenly wisdom, for it is the ONLY THING that will prevent eternal separation from Almighty God! Much LOVE!
 
…He that spared not his own Son…but delivered him up for us all…how shall he not with him…also freely give us all things…  (Rom.5:32)
