The Overwhelming Importance of the Lost and Sinful to Jesus and His Kingdom! Part 3.

Luke 15:24.        For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

And it’s our lazy-day Saturday! Yes, the day when we can do as we please. And after a foggy and rainy night, the sun has dispersed the fog and is now shining brightly in double figures. And that’s above freezing, not below (smile) around 12 Celsius on the plus scale. Wow! What freaky weather conditions; cold one minute, then warm the next. But we’ll take the warm days anytime. And by the way, I heard birds singing outside this morning, so that means spring might just be in the air. And it could not come quickly enough, because this has been a tough winter.

But that’s the life these days, for climate change is disrupting all the well laid systems of God, and we just have to put up with it as best we can. But that’s no problem, for we are children of the Most High God Jehovah, imbued with His Holy Spirit, and we can do anything through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who strengthens us and enables us to live the abundant life He died for us to have. End of Sermon! (smile)

Now let’s offer up our Lazy-Day Saturday Prayer, with all sincerity and truth. As one strong voice: ‘Lord, I want to be with You now. Please slow my thoughts and quiet my soul. Let my muscles relax, my breath deepen. You are here with me – Your peace and LOVE are present. I marvel to think You can’t be contained, that Your LOVE both surrounds and fills me. Thank You for this tenderness, Lord. I praise You for Your unceasing nearness. Increase my awareness of You today, that I may know You all the more. Amen!’

And as always, if our prayer was sincere and heartfelt, we’ll soon be experiencing the calm and peace of God in our souls and bodies, for God always grants sincere requests to be intimate with Him. And we’ll see one of those moments as we continue looking at the parable of the lost son. So, as this lost son had spent all his money in riotous living, when a serious famine hit the land, he ended up hungry and feeding swine because no one gave him anything.

But the Bible tells us: ‘And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more (no longer) worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.’ (Luke 15:17-19) Oh friends, that’s what happens when we wake up, when we come to our senses and realize that we cannot navigate this evil and ungodly world alone, we need God’s help, through Christ Jesus to help us do so successfully.

The Bible continues: ‘And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.’  (Luke 15:20) Now that’s as Jesus says, what happens when one sinner repents, when one lost son finds his way back home, there is joy in heaven. The father doesn’t’ berate him or say anything negative, just runs and hugs and kisses him.

‘And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more (no longer) worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes (sandals) on his feet. And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.’ (Luke 15:21-24) That’s the kind of partying that goes on in heaven friends, when we sincerely turn to Jesus!

However, there’s always someone or something that likes to put a burr in our saddle and spoil things. The Bible tells us: ‘Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated (begged) him.

And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid (young goat), that I might make merry with my friends: But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living (livelihood) with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. And he (the father) said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet (right) that we should make merry, and be glad: for thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.’ (Luke 15:25-32)

Yes, there’s always a jealous or greedy somebody, who’s only interest is in making selfish comparisons. But the Lord doesn’t allow them to curtail His joy when His lost or dead sons and daughters come back to His fold. No way! He rejoices. Yes, he calls all the angels and throws a big party when even one of His children has seen the light and followed it back to Him! And that’s how we ought to be my people; glad for those who conquer whatever they’re fighting and return to faith, not being angry and casting aspersions on their recent behaviour.

And I do hope those parables about the lost sheep, coin and son, make a such a noteworthy impact on us, that we now understand Jesus’ purpose for telling them, and we can move forward with the right attitude. And there’s no better time to do it than on this first lazy-day Saturday in March, when spring seems to be in the air. Remember, it’s all for our benefit, not God’s! Much LOVE!

…forgiveness is a gift…and if you want to receive it…then you must learn to give it…

Today’s Scrip-Bit   28 January 2024 Nehemiah 8:10b.

Nehemiah 8:10b.       the joy of the Lord is your strength.

‘Sunday morning coming down…’ That’s what the song says. And Sunday morning has come down wet and cloudy … But what else is new eh? (smile) And regardless of the inclement weather, we’ve gathered in the Lord’s house for fellowship, to offer up prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, so that we might receive in return the peace of God, which passes all human understanding, that will keep us safe, through Christ Jesus. (Eph. 4:6-7)

Now, I would say that is a most worthwhile exchange, with us possibly even getting the bigger benefit, for though the Lord enjoys hearing our prayers, supplications and thanksgiving, the gift of His supernatural peace in this crazy and ungodly world is nothing short of manna from heaven! (smile) For when we are filled with that peace, nothing on this earth bothers or scares us. All glory be to our wonderful God, my people!

And this morning we’re going to open the proceedings by singing a somewhat recent bit of gospel soul, that is, in comparison to all the older stuff we often sing. (smile) It comes from the early nineteen nineties, and it very much resembles what so many of us are currently going through; searching for peace and joy in an unstable world. It’s titled ‘Take Me Back Dear Lord,’ and I believe it was first performed by one of the early Christian soul singing bands, that’s Andrae Crouch and the Disciples from the album of the same name.

Some of you older folks might remember when he was one of the big names in Christian music, before popular Christian artists like the Winans; CeCe and Bebe came on the scene. Anyway, today is a day for real soul; true soulful music, that brings about the emptying of our emotions in sacrificial praise to God. So, let’s offer up those sacrificial praises in a rich, soulful, scintillating version of ‘Take Me Back Dear Lord,’ remembering that when the praises go up, the blessings come down. (smile)

And it opens with the heartrending Chorus that pleads to the Lord: ‘(Chorus: Take me back, take me back dear Lord To the place where I first received you. Ohhh Take me back, take me back dear Lord to where I first believed) (twice) I feel that I’m so far from you Lord But still I hear you calling me Those simple things that I once knew, The memories are drawing me. I must confess, Lord I’ve been blessed But yet my soul’s not satisfied. Renew my faith, restore my joy And dry my weeping eyes. (Chorus ‘Oh Lord, Oh Lord Take me back…)

Bridge: I tried so hard To make it all alone I need your help Lord Just to make it home. (Chorus Take me back, dear Lord, Please take me back to the place where I first received you. Take me back dear lord, Take me back, I’m pleading dear Lord, I’ve got to get back there, to the place where I first believed! Take me back, dear Lord, take me back, back to the place where I first believed.’

Oh my faithful believers, that was beautiful! And I’m sure the Lord heard the plaintive cries in our voices, asking for simpler, more easily understood times, before we lost our way to all the pressures and distractions that the world throws at us. And I know for a fact, that though many of us feel blessed with all the earthly amenities, our souls are not satisfied. That’s because we’ve strayed from the LOVING arms of God, put too much ungodly distance between ourselves and Him. And when that happens, we automatically lose our faith, and our joy is severely depleted.

That’s why Nehemiah tells us ‘the joy of the Lord is your strength.’ (Neh. 8:10) And that’s the gospel truth! For if there’s no joy of the Lord in your soul, then you will be weak as a church mouse, and the devil will have you for easy pickings. And in order to keep our faith strong, we always have to come back to Jesus’ basic words of faith building: ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.’ (Matt. 6:33) That’s the golden truth my brethren! The only way to keep our joy fresh and our faith strong is by continually keeping Almighty God first place in our lives.

Yes, occasionally we might stray, and Jesus addressed that in the parable of the Lost Coin, the Lost Sheep and the Lost or Prodigal Son, found in Luke 15. The younger of two sons takes his inheritance somewhat early, then goes off to a distant land and wastes it in dissolute living. When famine hits that land and he is destitute, with no handouts from anyone, he ends up working in a pig pen, the most despised job for a Jewish person.

But there in that pig pen, when he’s contemplating eating the pig food, he comes to his senses and decides to go back to his father’s house as a servant, where even the servants have more than enough. But while he is still some distance off, his father sees him, runs out to greet and hug him, happy that his son which was lost has now been found, whom he thought was dead, was still alive. That was obviously cause to kill the fatted calf and have a big celebration.

It’s the same way friends, when we stray from God, He’s always on the look out for us, waiting for us to come back home, humbled and realizing our mistake. And He’s always glad to welcome us back. That’s why Jesus said: ‘I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just (upright) persons, which need no repentance.’ (Luke 15:7)

Oh my people, let’s never forget that our God is in the saving business. Jesus said it loud and clear. ‘For God so LOVED the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world though him might be saved.’ (John 3:16-17)

Yes my fellow saints, those are words of indisputable truth, words for us to live by! And if we don’t live by them, then we’ll just have to suffer the consequences involved. And like the Prodigal Son, we’ll eventually find ourselves in rather unpleasant circumstances. So please, let’s allow godly wisdom to reign amongst us! Much LOVE!

…a word to the wise is sufficient…he who doesn’t hear will certainly feel…

Today’s Scrip-Bit   26 March 2023 Luke 19:10.

Luke 19:10.        For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which is lost.

Well come on down friends, it’s Sunday, the Lord’s Day once more! That means fellowshipping in His sanctuary, for the giving of thanks and praise and receiving His divine blessings for the upcoming week. And I’m sure you’ll enjoy todays song, titled ‘I’m just a Nobody’ because it’s a Contemporary Christian tune that we’re going to do in a rocking, raunchy, good times version, similar to that of the Casting Crowns featuring Matthew West. There’ll be lots of clapping, dancing, and  of course singing. (smile)

Without further ado then, let’s get rocking. And we’ll begin with some handclapping, in three fourths time, then sing the first line of the chorus three times acapella, then get into the full chorus as the music comes up. So here goes: ‘clap, clap: I’m just a nobody…clap, clap: I’m just a nobody…clap, clap: I’m just a nobody…’  And now the music comes in and everybody goes crazy: ‘I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, all about Somebody, who saved my soul. Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing. I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus! I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus!

Why you ever chose me, has always been a mystery. All my life, I’ve been told I belong, at the end of the line. With all the other “Not Quites” with all the “Never-Get-it Rights” But it turns out, they’re the ones You’ve been looking for all this time, Cause I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, all about Somebody, who saved my soul. Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing. I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus! I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus!

Moses had stage fright, and David brought a rock to a sword fight, You picked twelve outsiders, nobody would have ever chosen, and you changed the world. Well the moral of the story is, Everybody’s got a purpose. So when I hear that devil start talking to me saying, “Who do you think you are?” I say, I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, all about Somebody, who saved my soul. Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing. I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus! I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus!

So let me go down, down, down in history, as another blood-bought faithful member of the family. And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me. I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus… So let me go down, down, down in history, as another blood-bought faithful member of the family…That’s all I ever want to be…

And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me. I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus… Cause I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, all about Somebody, who saved my soul. Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing. I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus! I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus! I’m living for the world to see…Nobody but Jesus!’

Now didn’t that up-tempo bit of worship gladden your soul, put some pep in your step? Of course it did! And that’s what happens when we celebrate the wonderful ministry of Jesus. One commentary says: ‘The lyrics describe how God uses ordinary people to spread the Gospel of Jesus! We are all flawed, yet the Lord has a purpose for us. In our joy of having been forgiven, we excitedly point to the forgiver, Jesus Christ!’

And that’s the undeniable truth! When Jesus takes us up from what ever lowly place we’ve fallen and causes us to be reconciled to the Father, forgiven, justified, sanctified and all the other marvellous things His death and resurrection did for us, it’s hard not to be filled with joy; His joy, that then makes us want to go and tell EVERYBODY about what He’s done for us! And as the song says, Jesus has indeed been looking for all the “Not Quites” with all the “Never-Get-it Rights.” That’s the ones who are lost, fallen through the cracks and are wallowing in the mire of darkness of Satan and his sinful doings.

He made it very clear that He came to save and not to condemn when He said: ‘For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.’ (John 3:17) And furthermore, He was mostly interested in the sick, the lost and suffering as He declared (chuh man!!!) several times. For example, when He ate at the house of Zaccheus, the publican. Zaccheus repented after lunching with Jesus. ‘And Jesus said unto him. This day is salvation come to this house forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which is lost.’ (Luke 19:9-10)

He also told His audience the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son, noting that the owners of the lost sheep and coin searched diligently for what they had lost, while the Father of the prodigal son was always on the lookout for his lost boy coming back home, so he saw him as soon as he crossed the horizon, ran an hugged him and forgave him and made a celebration on his return. Likewise the owners of the lost cheep and coin also had celebrations when they found their lost property. (Luke 15)

And in the midst of those parables, Jesus made the following observation twice. ‘I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just (upright) persons, which need no repentance. (Luke 15:7) And then three verses later Jesus again declares (yesss!!!): ‘Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.’ (Luke 15:10)

And if you still don’t believe that Jesus came for the lost and hurting souls, then listen to Him again, this time after the scribes and Pharisees murmured against Him for eating and drinking with the publican (tax collector) Levi and other sinners. ‘And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole (healthy) need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’ (Luke 5:31-32)

Yes my fellow saints Jesus came to save those that are lost, those who cannot help themselves, so if you are amongst that unfortunate lot, then please, I urge you to look to Jesus and take His free offer of salvation through the gift of grace, asap! It will be the wisest decision you’ve ever made, and can ever make. Much LOVE!
