The Overwhelming Importance of Doing Whatever We Do, as though We’re Working Directly for God!

Today’s Scrip-Bit 21 September 2026   Colossians 3:17.

Colossians 3:17.        And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

And here we are on another sunshiny, though somewhat cool and windy Monday, beginning another week of work all for Jesus! Yes, let’s remember that whatever we do, it’s supposed to be for Him, and we do it the way He desires, not the way we want. As Bruh Paul says in Colossians as he talks about putting on the new man. ‘And above all these things put on charity (LOVE), which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also ye are called in one body, and be ye thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.’ (Col. 3:17) And the scholars explain that last verse by saying: ‘The beneficial influence produced by the indwelling word of Christ is not only to affect public and private worship (vs. 16), but it is also to control all areas of a Christian life.’

Then, later in that same chapter, Bruh Paul addressing servants, admonishes them thus. ‘Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh: not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart (sincerity), fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.’ (Col. 3:22-25)

Yes friends, even slaves were expected to work hard with a sincere disposition, wholeheartedly, not only when the master was watching, but always, because he was working not so much for his earthly master (unto men), but for his heavenly Master (to the Lord).  And if they did that, then they would receive the reward of the inheritance, namely salvation. Then the scholars tell us: ‘The fact that Christian slaves will receive salvation from the Lord rather than from men verifies the assertion in verse 23 that they serve Christ, not their masters.’

Those scriptures therefore tell us that as believers, we must give our best effort in all that we do, be it a big or small task, a very important or not so important one. We must imagine that we’re working directly for God. And I like how this explanation puts it: ‘Turn ordinary chores or job duties into an act of worship.’ And we know that’s not always easy to do, especially with some of the work we do, and some of the supervisors we have, but it’s a good way to look at our daily tasks, and certainly to our benefit. (smile)

And all of that ties in nicely with this passage from Cousin Sol, writing as the Preacher in Ecclesiastes, as he advises us to Live Joyfully. ‘Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. Let thy garments always be white; and let thy head lack no ointment (oil). Live joyfully (enjoy life) with the wife whom thou LOVEST all the days of the life of thy vanity (thy empty life), which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that this is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest (perform) under the sun.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happenenth to them all. For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes are taken in an evil (cruel) net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.’  (Eccl. 9:7-12)

Now, that’s wonderful advice my brethren, for none of us knows when the grim reaper will come for us, but until then, we owe it to ourselves, especially as Christians, to live a joyful and fulfilling life as possible while serving the Lord, because that’s our portion in this life, and there is no working in the grave. And per verses 11-12, the scholars explain. ‘Five statements of unexpected results are followed by an explanation. Man’s ability cannot guarantee the results (vs.11) because of the equalizing effects of time and chance.’

That’s the indisputable truth. No matter how good we are at whatever we do, we’re not guaranteed anything. That’s why we need to live with a joyful attitude, and do whatever we do well, as to the Lord. And to help us do that, let’s go to the throne of grace, through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn. Altogether: ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise and thank You  this Monday morning for our jobs; jobs we sometimes don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose; keeping lives and families together.

We also thank You Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm You’ve wrought in our weary souls over the weekend. It’s that rejuvenation of spirit which now allows us to sally forth with confidence into the evil and ungodly world, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted and bombarded by the enemy’s evil schemes. But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing Your powerful, protective spiritual armour!

We surrender our all to You, and humbly ask that You allow Your incredible aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit to lead and guide all Your servants, as we go out to meet the enemy in battle. Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, thereby furthering Your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy Name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! Amen!

And now, having been granted our wish, let’s go out and faithfully keep our promise! Much LOVE!

…length of life is not guaranteed…but it can be joyful…if lived for Christ…

The Necessity for Christians to Appreciate Their Jobs, and Use Them Wisely for Christ’s Benefit!

2 Thessalonians 3:13.        But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

And another Monday has rolled around again, a warm, sunshiny one to boot…Praise the Lord! Now why would you do that? Because it gives us the opportunity to go out to work, make some money and experience life at the same time. Yuh know the millions of people around our God-forsaken and strife-filled work who cannot do that, and would gladly give their right arm to be able to do so. Meanwhile, we are here moaning and groaning, complaining about the good things we have going for us.

And no, it’s not always easy or likeable, but just sit and consider for a moment, what would happen to you and your family if you didn’t have a job in this dog eat dog, rat race of a world we currently live in. And you don’t have to go to any far-off, poor countries to see what happens when you don’t have a job and are living in dire poverty. You can see that in the many jobless and subsequently homeless people that exist right here in our prosperous and wealthy society.

And it’s not because they all don’t want to work, but ofttimes, for whatever reason, they cannot get a job. And with the new rage of AI, Artificial Intelligence, lots of people are being laid off, making it even harder to acquire a decent job. So, if you have one to go this Monday morning, then please count yourself blessed and stop complaining about the inequities and injustice that might come with it.

That’s not to say you ought to allow yourself to be taken advantage of by your employer, but be careful how you go about trying to right the wrong, for it’s very easy to find yourself on the outside looking in. And I know, from personal experience, that’s not a very nice place to be.

Now you just need to look at all the food banks that have recently opened, and you’ll see how desperate the situation is. When I first came here some fifty odd years ago, a food bank was the exception rather than the rule, but now it’s the norm, for even those who are working, sometimes two jobs at once, still cannot maintain a family on their wages, especially with prices always on the rise, but salaries not running in tandem.

And talking about working, remember what Bruh Paul wrote to the Thessalonians? ‘For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but they are busybodies.

Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish (warn) him as a brother.’ (2 Thess. 3:10-15)

Yes friends, with the lack of work ethic that’s currently in vogue, (smile) it’s not surprising to note that there are many in our society, who refuse to work, instead living off of the Government and any others who will help them. And it would be good if we could shame them into working, but some of them have no shame whatsoever, and will keep on in their disorderly conduct regardless of what we do.

But the important thing to note in all this is that we must not be weary in well doing. In other words, despite the many obstacles we might, or will face, we ought to keep on trying to live the Christian life as best we can. That’s allowing the fruit of the Spirit to flourish in us; echoes of LOVE, joy, peace, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, patience, meekness and self-control. (Gal. 5:22-23)

Which reminds us of these wonderful, encouraging words of Bruh Paul to the Galatians. ‘Be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.  And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season, we shall reap, if we faint not (do not lose heart). As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.’ (Gal. 6:7-10)

We could not get any better advice than that on this first day of our work week my people. And to help us accomplish it, let’s go to the throne of grace, through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn, seeking divine aid. And it’s a somewhat different prayer today, because I brought back most of the old one, which I think resonates better with our current times.

So, altogether: Our Father, who art in heaven, we, Your humble servants, praise and thank You this Monday morning for our jobs; jobs we sometimes don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose; keeping lives and families together.

Amen!

Now, let’s go out there and make Jesus proud of us! Much LOVE!

One of the Most Important Duties of Christians is to Help Spread the Gospel of Christ around the World!

Romans 10:15b.         as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

‘Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!’ Oh my faithful brethren, those words of King Henry V from the Shakespearian play of the same name, do ring like a familiar battle cry this very cold winter Monday morning, as we return for the umpteenth time, (smile) to the battleground of the work world for another week of fierce encounters, and hopefully many successes.

Yes, my fellow believers in Christ Jesus, my fellow Christians, we must keep on keeping on with the difficult, but very rewarding task of living for Christ, and thus drawing others to Him by the godly example that we set in our everyday lives. That’s the ONLY way others will get to know, believe, and trust in Him for salvation and eternal life. It’s the job, the Great Commission, that Jesus gave the disciples and subsequently all believers to do, when He ascended back to heaven.

Listen to Him declare it. ‘All power (authority) is given unto me in heaven and earth. Go ye therefore and teach (make disciples of) all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.’ (Matt. 28:18:20)

Oh my people, that’s as clear as it could be! And why did Jesus want us to do that eh? Because it was a part of His major purpose for coming to earth as He told the Jewish leader Nicodemus. ‘For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.’ (John 3:17) But since He could not stay on earth forever as a human being, He recruited us, His followers to assist Him, giving us the Holy Spirit as Guide, Helper and Comforter.

Remember what Peter says: ‘The Lord is not slack concerning his promises, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.’ (2 Pet. 3:9) Yes, the Lord did promise the Second Coming of Jesus, but He also desires that all who trust in Him should come to salvation, so He’s patiently waiting for the right time.

Remember though, He can only wait for so long, and when the appointed time comes, all who don’t believe in Christ Jesus will suffer eternal separation from the Lord; the worse fate than can ever befall a human soul. That means we have to get going while the going is good, especially amongst our friends and family members, because we obviously don’t want to be separated from them for eternity. And there are also many others all around the world who have never heard of Jesus and His good news. Therefore, we also must help as many of those people through sharing our time, talent and treasure.

It’s like Bruh Paul says in his letter to the Roman church. ‘For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias (Isaiah) saith, Lord who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.’ (Rom. 10:13-15)

Yes my people, we cannot make others believe in Christ, but it’s our duty to ensure that His gospel is preached to all parts of the world. So, although the Monday morning is somewhat chilly (smile) we need to make the godly effort to get out there and mix and mingle and show the unbelievers how wonderful it is to be a follower of Jesus Christ. And to help us do that, let’s go to the throne of grace, through our Monday Morning Battle Hymn seeking divine aid.

And here’s a big surprise; something for our new Scrip-Bit family members; this is the old version of our Monday Morning Battle Hymn. I recently found it amongst a pile of papers, and did not even remember it, because it’s been so long ago since we used it. And yuh know what? I like it. (smile) So, since it also admirably suits our purposes, is very apropos for our current situation, let’s use it.

Altogether: ‘Oh Lord God Almighty, Creator of the universe and all therein! We, your humble servants, praise your Holy Name and thank You that this Monday Morning we have jobs to go to; jobs we don’t like, jobs that are unfair, difficult and even dangerous, but which serve a useful purpose, keeping lives and families together.

We also thank You Father for the renewed vitality and enthusiasm You’ve wrought in our weary souls over the last two days. It’s that rejuvenation of Spirit which allows us now to sally forth with confidence into the evil, ungodly world that surrounds us, to begin a new week of work, constantly buffeted by the enemy’s wicked taunts, wiles and lies. But heavenly Father, we’re not afraid, for we know we’re invincible, sure conquerors, once we’re wearing Your powerful, protective spiritual armour.

We surrender our all to You, and humbly ask that You let Your incredible aura of LOVE, the Holy Spirit, lead and guide all Your servants as we go out to meet the enemy in battle. Fill us with steadfast faith, so that we can make worthwhile inroads into the enemy’s ranks, and thereby further Your glorious kingdom. We pray this in the Holy and blessed name of Your Son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen!’

Wow! Doesn’t it sound like it was made for today? It surely does! But like in all partnerships, both sides have to do their parts. Christ has already done His, it’s now our turn to hold up our end of the bargain. So, let’s get out there and give it our best shot nuh! Much LOVE!

…the Christian’s duty is to sincerely live for Jesus…and faithfully reverence Him as Lord and Saviour…
