Today’s Scrip-Bit 5 September 2018 Matthew 26:42.

Matthew 26:42.   He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except (unless) I drink it, thy will be done.

Alive! Alive and kicking mih breddren! Yea! The Good Lord has seen it fit to allow us to see another blessed day on His wonderful Planet Earth! Glory be! That means He still has stuff for us to do down here. So let’s go out willingly and do His work today nuh! Make it our priority this Wednesday, as it ought to be!

And all God’s people gave a loud and grateful shout of ‘Praise the Lord! Bless His holy Name, for He is indeed worthy of much thanks and praise! Amen!’

Yeh mih people, our God is indeed a great and powerful God, but also an ever-LOVING and caring deity. That means He doesn’t just cast us off, even when we deserve casting aside. But He works with us, encourages and comforts us, gives us second, third, fourth and even fifth chances to turn our lives around. No other supposed deity does that! That’s why He is indeed the GREATEST!

But though He’s LOVING and kind and all that, He still has rules and boundaries and will not allow us to get away with too much nonsense. I’m reminded of that by this piece in our One Year Book of Bible Promises, with writings by Ruth Harms Calkin, titled ‘Method of Achievement.’

Please pray with me. ‘I said to You: Lord, crush my resentment Chisel my rebellion Chain my self-centredness Crash my inconsistency Stifle my fears. You said to me: I will cleanse you with My blood I will melt you with My LOVE I will flood you with Myself Until you grasp anew – Our intention is the same But the method is Mine.’

Glory be mih people! The method is certainly God’s! He will do whatever we want, but it will be His way, according to His will, and His time! He’s just reminding us who is the Boss! Who is the Creator and the Created! And though He is indeed our Friend, our BEST Friend, He is also our Lord, our God, our Maker and Master, so we have to know our place! Amen!

Even Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour acknowledged that the Father’s will was most important. As He says in our Bit, when He was anguished in the Garden of Gethsemane, the night before His crucifixion. ‘He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except (unless) I drink it, thy will be done.’

Yeh friends, even in Jesus’ darkest hour, He acknowledged that the Father’s will was uppermost. And all through His earthly sojourn He never claimed that He was here to do His will, but always the Father’s. Listen to His reply to the disciples when they offered Him food at the well of Jacob, after He had spoken to the Samaritan woman. ‘Jesus saith unto them, My meat (food) is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.’ (John 4:34)

Ah my brethren, doing the Father’s will should also be our main job on this Planet Earth! He made us, created us for His purpose and if we’re truly faithful, we’ll do what He desires. He has a plan for every life He creates, and it’s our duty to talk to Him and find out what He desires of us personally.

And the scripture promise for our poem today was this interesting passage from Isaiah. ‘Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counselor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him the path of judgement (justice), and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding?’ (Is.40:13-14)

And the simple answer to that friends is NOBODY! It was ALL His own doing!

And the scholars offer this interesting explanation re the Freedom of God. ’40:13. God is the only Being in the universe that possesses independence from the Creation. The only limits to God’s freedom are in His own nature and attributes. He is unlimited in His existence. Because His existence relates to His nature rather than His will, God will exist forever. He who exists by reason of His nature rather than His volition must have existed  – and must continue to exist – forever.

Illustration: When God revealed His nature to Moses at the burning bush, He called Himself “I AM” (Ex.3:13-15). This name emphasizes God’s self-existence, the fact that He has always existed and always will. Application: Neither anyone nor any outside force will affect God’s relationship to us. He will deal with us according to His nature because He is free from outside influence. (First ref. Gen.6:17; Primary Ref. Is.40:13; cf. Rom.12.1).’

Ah friends, that might be somewhat confusing to some of us, but my favourite part is that nothing or no one will influence God’s relationship with us. Yayyyy! Glory to God! Now, having said all of that, let’s go home rejoicing, declaring our Wednesday Wail, letting the whole world know our position in Christ Jesus!

So in strong voice, with sincere hearts, let’s wail mih breddren! ‘Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: I’m so glad to be alive on this Wednesday! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday: Thank God the breath of life is still flowing through me on this Wednesday! I am halfway home. My hands are fixed securely on the plough, and I’m not turning back. I’m not looking back at the past, not focusing on what has gone before. But my eyes are fixed straight ahead; straight ahead to a glorious future with Jesus. Glory Hallelujah!’

And as always, I can’t help but think that the eternal future with Jesus will be even more glorious than we can hope or imagine! Much LOVE!

…God is…was…and always will be…that’s comforting knowledge to the believer…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 15 May 2018 Proverbs 31:28.

Proverbs 31:28:   Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

‘I’m in heaven, yes heaven, cause I can once more breathe comfortably through my nostrils!’ Glory to God my breddren! I feel like a new man, after I went into the city yesterday afternoon and the medic took out some stuff left there after the surgery. The nostrils still aren’t perfect, but they are a whole lot better than they were.

Boy! Does it ever feel like a new world! Like I’m born again! And believe me, it took a little while for me to get accustomed to breathing through my nose again. (smile) But unfortunately that cloying, chalky, nasty taste from constantly breathing through my mouth for the last two weeks is still there. I guess it will take a while to go away…Let’s hope so yes, because it’s rather distasteful!

And I can certainly sleep a li’l better. I don’t have to wake up every hour or so to moisten my parched mouth. And talking about sleep, I did get lulled away by the beautiful riddim of the falling rain this morning, that’s why the Bit is somewhat late. (smile)

And in keeping with our promise not to just celebrate our mothers on Mother’s Day, I know some of us have already forgotten it, here is this poem from our One Year Book of Bible Promises, with writings By Ruth Harms Calkin. It’s simply titled ‘Motherhood.’

Please read with me: ‘Motherhood is now! The good and bad of it. The rewards and the trials. Tremendous pressures are placed upon you as a mother, for you have been chosen to work with God in the awesome task of nurturing the priceless treasures God has given you.

As a mother, you accept your children’s faltering steps toward independence with discipline, humour, patience, and a tremendous amount of trust. At times the struggles almost become an endurance contest. You wonder if you can handle all the confusion another day: the ringing phone, the broken dishes, the blaring television, the hurtful words. High temperatures, school conferences, dentist appointments, rebellious tears. Is there ever an end?

But suddenly in the midst of turmoil you catch a broad grin. You feel a warm hug. At bedtime somebody prays, “Thank you, God, for Mom and for the chocolate-chip cookies…and for LOVE.” You renew again your deep desire to create a genuine God-hunger in your children. God has chosen you for such a task as this.’

Wow mih people! What an accurate account of a Mother’s harried life! And surprisingly, most of them do it without batting an eyelash or offering a complaining word. What towers of strength they are! That’s why I encourage us to cherish and treasure and LOVE them much more than we currently do! For without them, as they say, ‘our tail would be grass.’ (smile)

And the Bible Promise for that poem is also our Bit for today. ‘Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.’ Yeh friends, that’s the reaction of a godly mother’s family. It all comes from the last chapter of Proverbs which sings the praises of a virtuous woman.

As it says: ‘Who can find a virtuous woman (wife of valour)? For her price (worth) is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil (lack of gain). She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.’ (Prov.31:10-12) And I don’t know if I have enough space, but I will endeavour to describe the qualities of a godly mother, of an excellent wife, as set out in these last verses of Proverbs.

‘She is rare (v 10); trustworthy (v.11); constant in her LOVE (v.12); industrious (v.13); thrifty (v.14); self-starting (v: 15); enterprising (v.16); willing to do hard work (v.17); willing to work long hours (v.18); willing to do monotonous work (v.19); compassionate (v.20); prepared for the future (v.21); a good seamstress (v.22); married to a leader (v.23); an entrepreneur (v.24); not swayed by circumstances (v.25); wise and kind (v.26); duty-conscious (v.27); blessed by her family (v.28); not satisfied with the mediocre (v.29); a woman of God (v.30) ; and praiseworthy (v.31).

She is a woman of means (vs.15, 22) and a woman of great skill and ability who lives in an agrarian economy. She is a woman of God who is enterprising and dedicated to her home. Perhaps this acrostic on the excellent wife is placed at the end of the book because she, above all others, will be most able to demonstrate the principles of wisdom in the home.’

Ah friends, what more can I say about mothers eh? Nothing really. Yuh see the many varied tasks and problems she has to deal with. She is indeed the backbone of the family! So let’s try and do more to appreciate and LOVE her nuh, that’s our bounden duty.

Now let’s go home declaring who and whose we are through our Tuesday Mantra. ‘I’m not what I do. I’m not what I have. I’m not what people say about me. I am the beloved of God, that’s who I am. No one can take that from me. I don’t have to worry. I don’t have to hurry. I can trust my friend Jesus and share His LOVE with the world.  Amen!’

And if we were sincere in our words, then let’s go out and share all we have with others as Jesus desires of us. Much LOVE!

…truthfully…a mother’s work is never done…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 7 August 2012 Exodus 20:3

Exodus 20:3.    Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Ah well, the party’s finally over my Friends. It’s time to call it a day. Yeah people, Caribana’s finished for another year. And thankfully it didn’t seem to have any serious negative consequences. But while the party has cooled down in T.O, it’s just beginning in J.A and T&T with the 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations. And where yuh see Usain Bolt retained his track crown, and also bettered his previous record, hn, I can assure you that Jamdown is in a thoroughly party going frame of mind. And T&T won’t be far behind. But as I keep reminding us, drunk or sober, we have to mind our business, so that the ole charlatan Lucifer doesn’t find a chink in our spiritual armour and invade our souls, cause we know that he’s always on the hunt, like a hungry lion, looking for whomever he could get his lying, deceitful claws into. And that’s exactly why the Lord warned us from day one, in our Bit: ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me.’ Oh Friends, because of our fallen, rebellious nature, He knew our susceptibility to things forbidden, to things of the flesh, to things that the tempter would throw up before us, things looking all nice and glittery, like they were the real McCoy, but in actual fact are all fake. They are all part of a facade, a false front that Lucifer puts up to cover the reprehensible doings he encourages in the back, where no one can see. But Friends God does, for He is all-seeing and all-knowing. Oh my people, why do you think the Lord got Moses to spell out these facts in detail eh? ‘Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to (worship) them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting (punishing) the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy to them that LOVE me, and keep my commandments.’ (Ex.20:4-6) The Lord laid down those rules because we’re His chosen people, and He doesn’t want us going astray, running foul of His law, so that He would be forced to punish us. But yuh know, even after He tore out His heart and sent His Son Jesus to pay for our disgusting sins, we continue to lust after other gods and worldly things. Until now, when we’ve reached the highest point of our evolution, with the most knowledge and technological skills ever seen on earth, where we should be endowed with godly wisdom, because of all the examples of disobedience and punishment that’s gone before us, yet we still running behind the fool fool boy Lucifer, who, if he was so smart, would still be running the angels in heaven and not walking the earth in shame for trying to overthrow the Lord God Jehovah. I mean how silly can you get eh? So my brethren, when are we going to learn that Lucifer really has nothing good to offer us eh? When the Lord destroys us for disobedience and we end up in blistering hot Hades with him? Lord forbid! How many times Friends, has the Lord warned us of this serious breach of His law? Too numerous to count! But let’s look at a couple of them, starting in Deuteronomy: ‘Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you. (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.’ (Deut.6:13-15) Now doesn’t that spell it out ever so clearly that disobedience will bring punishment and eventual destruction? Now hear Jeremiah: ‘And the Lord hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened (listened), nor inclined your ear to hear. They said, Turn ye again (repent now) every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever. And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt (harm). Yet ye have not hearkened (listened) unto me, saith the Lord; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt (harm).’ (Jer.25:4-7) And what happened after that Friends? Judah was invaded, Jerusalem destroyed, and the people taken captive to Babylon for seventy years. (Jer.6:8-14) So you think it will be any different now my people? Not one bit! God’s still sending his prophets, servants and teachers, like me, to warn us, and if we still continue to walk the path of disobedience, as we’re currently doing, we will be punished, as we’re currently experiencing. Oh Friends, please don’t believe that all the calamities and disastrous things that are happening in our world are simply happenstance, because they are not. A lot of it is being fuelled by the Lord’s anger. And if we don’t stop soon and turn back to Him, we will eventually be destroyed. That’s what the Good Book says…and the Good Book doesn’t lie. So please, I implore us, let’s wake up and start doing right by our Creator nuh, if not for our sakes, then for our children’s, or else crapaud surely going to smoke we pipe sometime soon. Much LOVE!…the wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way…but the folly of fools is deceit… (Prov.14:8)

Today’s Scrip-Bit 31 July 2012 Proverbs 9:9

Proverbs 9:9.     Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Oh Friends, the ole fella’s in a rut this morning. I can’t come up with a rousing, inspiring intro to boost your spirits, to get your adrenalin truly flowing, so that your feet will be in a dancing mood, and your heart and mind wisely functioning on God’s wonderful wavelength of truth, justice, mercy, LOVE and forgiveness! Although, as usual, before starting to write, I asked the Lord for guidance and discernment to know and understand what He wants me to write, because I don’t want to write any wrong stuff, He’s yet to get me rolling. But as I keep saying, there’s method to the Lord’s madness, and we just have to persevere in His Word and His promises and eventually He’ll make all things right. That’s why I don’t doubt that this will be a ‘dynomite’ Bit! (smile) There we go Friends, the Spirit’s up and running! How can I then not LOVE the wonderful God we serve and worship eh mih people? For though He seems to leave us in the lurch longer than we desire, He’s promised to never leave nor forsake us, and that’s a promise I’m sincerely counting on and living by. One more thing Friends; the Lord’s NEVER LATE with His help! I speak thereof from hard experience. All of us would like His help now for now, but that’s not how He operates. He likes the just in time formula, which often gets us worried and frustrated. But be sure of this one thing: HE WILL SHOW UP ON TIME! Anyway, enough of my rambling. Here’s a quote from Joseph Addison (1672-1719) the English essayist and poet. He says: ‘There is nothing which we receive with so much reluctance as advice.’ Gospel truth mih people, gospel truth! None of us take kindly to receiving advice, especially if it goes against what we think. And sometimes we get so indignant about advice that we go and do the exact opposite, although deep down we know that it’s right and true. Why is that eh? I guess there are basically two main reasons. First off is that the human animal doesn’t like to be told what to do. A sense of independence has been bred into his nature, no wonder colonized nations, at some stage in their development, also get all hyped up over their independence from the Mother countries. Advice also has a negative connotation to many of us. It makes us feel inferior, as though we’re unable to paddle our own canoe, shape our own destiny. And often, once we hear about advice, our suspicions and protective instincts immediately rise up and negativity fills our mind. The problem my people is that two kinds of basic advice exists; the good and bad kind. The goodness or badness often depends on the circumstances of a particular situation, as well as the people involved. In the long run though, others can only offer us advice, we still have to make the final decisions. So it’s possible to get good advice and yet make bad decisions, as well as vice versa. But thankfully Friends, our Bit today guides us along the right path. ‘Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.’ That’s oh so true my brethren! A wise man will heed good advice and thus get wiser. I guess because he’s already wise, he knows how to sift good advice from bad. But then too our Bit proclaims that if we teach a just man, that he will increase in learning. Why is that eh? Perhaps because the just man aspires to walk the straight and narrow path of God, he has a heightened sense of right and wrong, good and bad, thus he will seek to improve his mental faculties, instead of thinking he knows it all, which would only lead him down the proud and arrogant path to certain destruction. Hear what Cousin Sol says about the wise man at the very beginning of his thought provoking sayings: ‘A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain (inquire) unto wise counsels.’ (Prov.1:5) Yes Friends, that means he won’t depend solely on his own thinking, but will seek knowledge and advice from others who seem to be well acquainted with the pros and cons of his particular project. Remember though, that the final decision will still be his, but the important thing is that he is wise enough to seek out pertinent information that will assist him in making as good a decision as he can. Now how many of us do that eh? Obviously not enough, otherwise our world wouldn’t be suffering as much as it is from a host of bad decisions made by a host of supposed experts. Anyway brethren, we’re going to end here today, because it will get too long if I put in all I want to say, and I respect your time and attention span. (smile)  But tomorrow, God willing, we’ll continue this topic. In the meanwhile, please, let’s ponder our personal situations re the taking of advice, and make serious plans to improve our response to the subject in a wise manner. Much LOVE!…a wise man will hear…and follow good advice…while a fool will not…and therefore will wallow in his own folly…

Today’s Scrip-Bit 5 July 2012 Psalm 115:1

Psalm 115:1.    Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy and for thy truth’s sake.

Oh Friends, it’s another new day! Glory be! And it’s also going to be another hot one, though possibly not as hot as yesterday, or as hot as tomorrow is forecasted to be. But as usual, we believers have cause to celebrate each new day since our ever-LOVING and merciful God does new and blessed stuff every day. Now I don’t have a Bit as yet, but the Spirit has put this idea of freedom and independence in my mind, so I’ll just run with it. (smile) Yesterday was the 4th of July, Independence Day celebrations in the U.S, but I wonder what kind of celebrations they really had with the country currently suffering so much affliction; terrible natural disasters on the East Coast and in Colorado, a stinging heat wave traversing all North America, plus the unfortunate economic distress that so many are suffering in the still richest country in the world. I’m sure it was not as huge and worldly as it usually is, but much more subdued and prayerful. For how can you be overly happy when so many don’t have light, food and water, or even a place to live, as so many down there are unfortunately experiencing? Even the capital, Washington D.C. is suffering from the recent storms. Then there are many other nations who are soon going to be celebrating their independence, like Jamaica and T&T, fifty years in the making. How have all these supposed free nations done in their independence though? Most of them haven’t done too well at all. So what’s the big deal about it eh? Most of the nations have only exchanged a colonial power as their master for one of the global banks or big money organizations, who rape these countries worse than the old colonial masters did. Yet we all still clamour for freedom, for independence! But sadly none of us ever become truly free, for we’re always responsible for, or to, something or someone else. So though on paper we’re free to make our own determinations, they certainly cannot be made in isolation, especially in this age of the global village. Oh Friends, the price of supposed freedom is exorbitant, both in economics and personal freedom of movement, as we can see from the economic disaster that’s facing our world today, and the many graves all around the world, with more being added every day, and still nobody’s free, freedom remains as elusive as ever. Man searches, begs, fights, dies, does so many things to try and attain freedom, but cannot, because it’s basically a figment of our imagination. Let me share a quote from the In Touch Magazine, July edition, from the Devotional Section, which says: ‘It may sound like a paradox, but true freedom isn’t about independence. The spiritually maturing believer is one who grows increasingly dependent on God.’ And that’s the living truth my people! Because the more mature we become in Christ, the more dependent we are on Him. Reality steps in and shows us that maturity doesn’t mean breaking free from Him, but rather accepting His easy yoke and light burden more and more with each passing day, for that’s the only way to truly know and learn about Him. Friends, it’s all well and good to be free, but from what, and how do we sustain that freedom? It’s very difficult and oftimes impossible, because though you may have freedom in one sense, you soon discover that you’re inextricably tied to something else. The Spirit though says it’s time for me to shut up about freedom and find a Bit. (smile) I do hope though that the ideas I threw out, give us some stuff to seriously think about, because the clamour for freedom and independence is becoming louder every day. And the Spirit is so wonderful, it hooked me up with an appropriate Bit, right where the Good Book was opened all along, from Psalm 115, re Trust in God, not in idols. More gospel truth Friends! ‘Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy (LOVING-kindness) and for thy truth’s sake.’ Yes mih people, the glory is not for us, for we don’t have anything to be glorified about. But the Lord’s name, His LOVING-kindness and truth are indeed worthy of glorification, for He’s the Creator, Controller, Protector and Provider of our universe! And we all know that He’s very jealous of His name; doesn’t want it trodden down or used inappropriately. No wonder when He rebukes Israel’s unfaithfulness, He declares through His messenger Isaiah: ‘For my name’s sake will I defer (delay) mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain (restrain) for thee, that I cut (destroy) thee not off. Behold, I have refined thee, but not with (as) silver; I have chosen (tested) thee in the furnace of affliction. For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted (profaned)? and I will not give my glory unto another. Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned (stretched out) the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.’ (Is.48:9-13) Wow! What a truly mighty God we serve my people! Yes, the Lord God Jehovah, He is the ultimate Being! And though we can get some sort of independence and freedom from man and his organizations, freedom and independence from Almighty God is neither wise, nor even possible. Why? Because He can get on your case and make your life miserable, as he’s doing to so many who are trying to turn away from Him these days. On the other hand, the wise man will instead surrender His life, his God-given freedom of choice to God and allow Him to run his life, because He’s so much stronger and wiser. Please Friends, let’s show the ultimate in wisdom today nuh, by totally surrendering our freedom to God, so He can improve our lives. It’s the most sensible path to take, the one least fraught with potholes, high hills, winding curves and dangerous gullies. Much LOVE!…total freedom and independence are merely the utopian imaginings of man…for in reality…they do not exist…   P.S. It’s somewhat long, but thought provoking. (smile)
